Until Dawn really just hit different. Quarry would have overtaken UD for me if the creature design had been a little cooler. The Wendigo are just so awesome in UD and so unnerving.
Imo the werewolves in the quarry looked practically the same as the wendigo, like to the point that I thought they shared the same model. My biggest problem with the quarry is that the ending just flops for me, it comes out of nowhere and doesn't leave me feeling satisfied, one of the biggest oversights in the game is how even you attempt to get a everyone lives ending it will always be impossible be cause the end credits always show Kaylee Hacket as dead. And also the whole mechanic of characters being bitten then turning into werewolves like I felt that they could've done so much more with that, the only characters that possible werewolf Transformations matter like at the mansion scene at the end imagine how cool it'd be if you had to fight off all your turned friends at the end instead of always the same guy. Oh, and also, they wasted Nick's character, I always feel bad whenever I see a party of people playing the game and someone chooses Nick.
No chance! UD had better EVERYTHING! I wasn't annoyed by any of the character's VA. Even if the Wendigo design wasn't as good as the Quarry, it still would've been a better game overall. I don't just jump on the bandwagon of a game is better just because it's more recent. I choose the better game. Which is Until Dawn.
@@pintolerance785 Kaylee is kinda like Josh. Josh basically dies no matter what you do. Sure you can somewhat save him but then he’s trapped inside of a wendigo.
The reason why Until Dawn works the best, despite looking beautiful and being really atomspheric was how they handled story. Instead of going from point A to point B it had a lot of twists and turns that all worked together and explained everything. Dealing with Josh's pranks, his mental illness, wendigo, mines, psychiatrist... it was overall really sad yet amazing story and everything made sense. Also that ending where they give their statements to the police was amazing and really heartbreaking. I highly doubt that any other game is gonna achive it. I recently played Devil in me and it was quite good but as close to Until Dawn.
yeah just the problems when matt die from falling and u see his shoes and later in the game when u see his body he still has his shoes and lantern lag all of this are some lag but this game is so good
@@s_lb84 the fact you picked up on the shoes is crazy attention to detail. Also if that's the main problem u can come up with then it really is a masterpiece
The only things The Devil In Me lacked were a better atmosphere and better acting from the playable characters. The characters were just awful in that game
I feel like until dawn will always be number 1 no matter how many or how good any other games they make are, the story is good and interesting, the characters are good and not overly annoying , at first I thought I wouldn’t care if Emily died until the “mine scene” (trying my best to be spoiler free), plot points are really good. While uses you make don’t matter much in the end, they still effect the story you’re playing as a whole. The whole plot point with the “creatures” you face in game is pretty good, and can I also say that the graphics are really good for most games that came out in 2015? Like they’re crazy good for the time of it’s release. Over all it’s a complete 10/10 with barely anything wrong it at all
Graphics are really good, but they are running at about 24fps which breaks the game for me. On PS5 it still often below 60fps. Thankfully, later games are running smoothly 😃.
Until dawn definitely has the most interesting and cohesive story, as well as actually being scary with interesting characters. The quarry, for example, is good but could be better with richer dialogue, scarier werewolves, and better endings
Actually the Dark Pictures Anthology are all based on true stories. Man of Medan is/was a real ghost ship called The Ourang Medan. Ourang translates to “Man of” and Medan is an Indonesian city. The witch trial events were based on true events, House of Ashes are based on true Mesopotamian myths and a curse. Devil in Me is based on America’s first known serial killer: Henry Howard Holms (H.H. Holmes).
@@legzzzzz I am not able to say just yet. Since i haven’t played through the entire games of Little Hope, House of Ashes or The Quarry. YET. But I will finish soon. I have not been able to get Devil In Me just yet. But I do research on all the games and movies that I am currently into or about to play. Surprising how much horror is based on true events or stories/places. I am looking forward to completing the rest
A conspiracy theory has it that HH Holmes was not just America's first known serial killer but was what the serial killer from Whitechapel in London commonly known as Jack the Ripper went by after he disappeared. As he was never caught by British authorities.
I was shocked that there wasn’t an epilogue after chapter ten, and the only main character I didn’t save was Nick. The game was captivating but then it just ends with no closure, for a game that’s half teen-drama it feels very awkward ending in such a cold and abrupt way
Until Dawn was such a strong first game for them. They got the pacing perfectly, the graphics were amazing, the characters were realistic, well-acted and you spent a fair amount of time with each of them (obvs some more than others). I think the reason the subsequent games haven't hit as hard is that: A) they haven't managed to stick the endings. Something about having UD ending with the whole group (bar Matt and Jess) having a showdown all together just worked so well. The Quarry would've been so good if the ending hadn't fallen so flat, with characters all separated in different areas and not really feeling a big culmination of the plot, yknow. B) you just can't replicate that double plot twist that works so well in UD. House of Ashes definitely took a turn, which was cool, but something about having the killer but then the reveal of his identity, and then the second twist of who the actual threat was?? You can't replicate that 👌 7 years later i still bloody love that game despite never having physically played it 😂 And of course I love seeing all the new games they bring out too. Just nothing hits the same as good ol Until Dawn
I agree. I think the biggest thing that made UD a success was that the time and effort put into it is obvious. Theres no less than 3 different stories to collect via the clues, and it all connects... the pacing is perfect, the story is deep, and the twists are perfect. Its hard to replicate that in a game meant to be 4 hours long that you can binge with friends, and that comes out usually once a year. You have to have a quick story, and it has to be written quickly so that development, actors, design, programing and all that can be done in a years time...
The only thing I disagree with was the graphics. They may have been good for its time, but compared to games like TLOU part 2, the graphics were mediocre. Even when playing The Quarry, I remember being impressed with how realistic their skin looked lol
Here’s my personal ranking, for all who will listen: 1. Until Dawn - Obvious choice and I feel like it has the best jumpscares in the entire “series” 2. House of Ashes - Honestly, this blew me away first time playing it. Salim is the best character in all of Supermassive Games, try and change my mind. This is also my most replayed Supermassive Games game. 3. The Quarry - Didn’t expect it to be that good. Not the best game ever made but I liked it and even replayed it a few times. 4. The Devil In Me - Loved the whole H.H.Holmes aspect and the “immortal killer” vibe, like Friday the 13th. 5. Little Hope - Now I’m not saying this game itself is BAD, I’m just saying I didn’t enjoy it that much. I liked some parts of it, like the twist was decent and the choices you made felt impactful, but as a whole I did it enjoy it as much as I thought it would. 6. Man of Medan - This one is pretty much self explanatory
little hope - was so good at the start with the mysteriousness of the town and how there were jumpscares/ghosts it made you feel like u were in a horror movie. Up until the end tho when u find out it was all fake and made up in his head was kind of dead and made it less scary which is why i rate it low. Man of medan - ngl i liked this game and the jumoscares scared the shit out of me up until u find out it wasnt a ghost ship and that it was just the mist. best game by far is Until Dawn tho self explanatory Hayden is bae all i gotta say. Moral of the story tho is FUCK GHOSTS.
Salim is the most badass character in these games. Mike in Until Dawn comes close but falls just shy of #1 because of bull wendigo invincibility against everything but fire.
Completely agree with this list. House Ash is my #2, as well. There are some things that throw me about it, like when Ashley Tisdale's voice completely changes when she speaks Arabic. But, Salim is just such a fantastic character, and that scene where they are all in the crypt fightining off a hoard is the most tense scene in any of the games.
I also thought house of ashes was better than the quarry. The quarry felt to much like a copy paste of until dawn, while house of ashes direction was really novel. They both had rehashes of classic monsters but while hoa's felt unpredictable and truly terrifying, the quarry's just felt like... an odd choice. It was really harder to perdict the end of hoa while in the quarry everybody guessed it by chapter 3. One the worst parts of man of medan was you figured out the gold way to early and the quarry had the same problem. Combined with the same issue as little hope which was a lackluster ending, it felt much weaker than hoa.
until dawn really was the blueprint, they came out of the gate swinging and showed us all that they used all their best material first. i’m okay with it, because we got out of it one of my personal favorite horror stories. As a writer and big fan of the horror genre UD inspires me all the time. would be nice if the other games were better but oh well.
Bro these are my exact thoughts. UD inspires me as a writer in college rn. It’s one of my fondest horror genre go-to’s when looking for inspiration. Love the characters, story telling, and of course… the twist.
@@trent2kg813 yes! so many people say it’s cheesy or cringey but i love how it leans into the stereotypical teen horror tropes at the beginning. it makes the twist so much more rewarding. as far as horror monsters go this game takes the cake for me.
I forgot how amazing Until Dawn was. You could aim your flastlight in game by moving your controller, and there were moments where YOU had to stay still as any movement detected by some internal sensor in your controller would get you killed in game. Never saw that technology used in any game ever again for the PS4.
Main thing I don’t like about devil in me are the bugs, the choices that kill your characters that you just couldn’t know about prior, and the character were mostly boring with the exception of Charlie and Erin.
I just felt that Erin’s fears and personal struggle were a little more present than I’m Jamie’s character which we practically learn nothing about. With Erin we understand she’s a young intern interested in having a higher status in her job and gaining some respect, however to do this she has to battle her personal struggles such as her fear and her physical limitations (asthma).
Characters in the Devil In Me are meant to die more easily, as you can clearly see from the Curator´s obsession with it in the end. The game basically forces you to lose some characters, as you are up against perhaps the most intimidating adversary you have faced in the games, at least so far.
I see so it's more so about her value to the game than as a character on a whole? As a plot device, I agree 100 percent. It provided a useful bit of story telling and the personal limitation she had did make you stay on your toes and added a little bit extra to the gameplay. It's done sooo better than Marks fear of heights (also to note, someone who I had the unpopular opinion of not finding boring). Something like asthma or relevant allergies really provides good tension to the environment in a horror setting. But if we separate what works well for the story and just go based on characters themselves, I actually found Erin to be the least compelling. These kind of feeble flighty characters are never my favourite, although arguably the most realistic. I have a harder time appreciating these characters and perhaps we simply didn't see enough of Erin to connect with her more. Jamie was probably a bad example because your right, we didn't go much deeper into her than what we already got, hard to say she had any growth, although I did enjoy the character on a whole. Someone like Kate though we know pretty clear cut what her desires are, about her thoughts and plans on being apart of the crew, and we get extra insight into her past that involves a traumic tragedy. We learn a lot about her piece by piece and she gets a decent amount of character growth. She kind of becomes a leader and acts extremely proactive in the attack against yet another serial killer in her life. It could perhaps be her acting so boldly to make amends for the actions she made in the past that she feels were partly responsible to leading death of her friend. However its without question that Erin had the best scene in the entire game for me. So just for what she does for the game it's very fair to say she's far from boring.
100% agreed. I’m convinced people who rank it low do so because they lost him/saved him at the beginning. Also, co-oping this game is so much fun due to all the mindfuckery!
@@HiteshKumar_108Understandable. Saving Him Early or getting him killed early makes Man of Medan so much more boring that Little Hope seem like an actually decent game, despite that games equally wack twist.
i will never forgive the lack of a proper ending for the quarry. such a cool game, interesting and lovable characters, super funny dialogue, the visuals are great, the character models are only really wonky in the eyes (and lauras hair in chapter 10 for some reason. why hasn't that been fixed???), but the lack of closure makes it soooooo unsatisfying. i don't have much hope, but i still wish for them to add an actual ending at some point.
Abi's hair also gets clippy at times, like before Nick turns into a werewolf. And yeah, an epilogue would've gone a long way, many relationships are kinda left dangling, should've seen them all meet back up at the end.
The Part that stuck with me the most was in House of Ashes where the guy from the prologue was still alive after all these years, not being able to move too, while half of him was already a skeleton.
Interesting, Little Hope is my personal favorite. I feel like it mixed Silent Hill and classic 80s horror and psychological horror in really interesting ways and I've seen every single ending now.
I felt a bit empty with the ending... it's a bit unsatisfying when you save all characters and still end up alone... but it was unexpected, therefore I liked it.
Bearing in mind it’s been a few years since I played Until Dawn & the fact I haven’t quite finished The Quarry, so maybe it’s not as fair including these in my rankings. But anyways from best to worst, here we go:- 1. Until Dawn 2. Little Hope- I was surprised to see this one placed so low, I loved the atmosphere of this game & the settings it explores. Also really appreciated the plot twist ending as I felt like it actually fit really well & was a bit of a mindfk. 3. House of Ashes 4. The Quarry 5. Devil in me 6. Man of Medan Both Devil in me & The Quarry I played on release & the lack of “shared story” mode definitely made an impact on my opinions of them, also Devil in me was buggy as hell & could hardly take it seriously at all while just laughing at all the bugs
I didn’t like the little hope’s ending because for me it made the game unreplayable. What’s the point to go back and see what characters you could save when yk they all are not real.
In my opinion Little Hope did the plot twist better than Man of Medan. At least in Little Hope it plot twist has more meaning - it focuses on one guy so when everything is over you can decipher everything you see.
@@Виктория-с7ч5ю first of all, now when you know what's going on, some scenes in Puritan times make more sense. For example, there is a short moment when one of the Puritan women has no face. Soon after that the bus characters visit Little Hope's museum and there are mannequins dressed as Puritans. You can assume that the main character went there on the school trip to learn about witch trials and that influances his hallucinations. And since he casts people he knew or saw as Puritans, maybe in that moment when the woman had no face, his subconscious was looking for someone to "cast" her us.
The commenter Morgan Clarke (third top comment I think) got the correct list. House of Ashes at number 3 is pretty odd, it was an outlandish idea and the monsters were real. The monster design in The Quarry is incredibly unsatisfying. Calling them werewolves is actually offensive, they're more like lycans or even something else entirely, basically cheaper wendigos. Little Hope was quite alright, but the ending ruins the entire game.
1. Until Dawn - I need not say why this is the best. Jessica is bae. 2. House of Ashes - I like most of the characters, Nick is a bit boring and Rachel is a bit annoying. Eric is adorable and Jason and Salim are the best thing to come out of that game. The story was interesting. I always play these in shared story so having two characters basically be my own, and two be my friends made me feel more connected to my own characters. The set pieces are amazing, also Ashley Tisdale :p 3. The Devil in Me - This could’ve been on par if it wasn’t so buggy on release. People don’t like the characters, but I actually do. The mystery was fun to solve in this one and I love escape rooms in real life and it kinda felt like that. Like the deaths in the game and that you can save a doggo (even tho I lost only Jamie in my OG play through and it was to save said dog :/) 4. The Quarry - I think people gush over this game a little too much. This game has one sweet spot and it’s right in the middle. The beginning is boring and the ending is boring. The sweet spot is when the wolves attack Nick and Abi up until Laura is reintroduced, everything outside of those segments was so boring and uninteresting. I didn’t like most of the characters and the ones I did like didn’t have any story. 5. Little Hope - This would honestly be in my top 3 if it had just been real lol 6. Man of Medan - Plot was very predictable so I was never scared throughout playing. Kinda lacklustre ending. Didn’t like Fliss or Alex, Bradical, the water virgin sorta made up for that though. Overall I do love all these games, I think Supermassive may be one of my fave gaming studios. I’m always pumped for their releases.
Little Hope had so much potential. The Witch Trials were Amazing. my rankings are: 1. Until Dawn 2. House Of Ashes 3. The Devil In Me 4. The Quarry 5. Little Hope 6. Man Of Medan
@@yeoscore yeah I’m personally very fascinated in anything that takes place in the 13 colonies. My great great great great grandmother lived in Massachusetts Bay Colony. So the Salem witch trial twist really pulled me in. Plus I like the New England accent way more than say the accent of someone from London.
@@AliAiham if I were you I would save until dawn and the quarry for last because they are regarded as the best. Maybe skip man of Medan. Play little hope, house of ashes, the devil in me, the quarry and play the best one until dawn last.
House of ashes is preferably my favorite game out of the series. The undeniably creepy situation of a hive of aliens have been brewing under these ancient burial grounds is great.
Mike in until dawn is the best character. You can make him the biggest badass in any of the games with the choices you make. Until dawn is my favorite but I think quarry is a 1a 1b game imo. But I do like where the dark pictures is going each game got better and better, can’t wait for the next “season”
I just finished playing Until Dawn with my sister and we really loved it. I’ve noticed while watching other lets players play it that it definitely has its flaws, but it’s so good because it was new to the genre at the time. It was the start to the rest of them and it left its mark on the world and that’s what makes it so special. My sister and I wanted to look into the rest of the Supermassive games to see which one we should play next, so thanks for the ranking! It was very helpful :)
I’m convinced that most people who rank Man of Medan at the bottom either killed off/made Conrad escape at the start - or they played single player. Because being chased by that pinup lady in co-op was actually a great mindfuck. And in my opinion, it alone trumped all of DIM in terms of spook-type fright. Even if you think you’ve cracked the code and you “know” the monster is actually your gaming friend, at several points, the monster teleports in a way that makes you re-evaluate (wait, hold up, IS there also evil on this ship and I AM in real danger??”) while you have no time to really try to think, because you’re being chased and your pulse is up and the adrenaline is going and the lady looks more and more terrifying and sounds even worse. Not to mention how scenic it all looks at the top of the boat (even if the witch looks like a wendigo knock-off at that point), I think I had a come to Jesus moment, man. It was a much spookier visual than the saw-theme in DIM. Not to mention that the “what’s real and what isn’t?” aspect makes co-op really fun, because you can’t trust what you see. Do you attack the treat or do you trust that it’s your friend? When playing the dark picture games, me and my friend always pause after each chapter to rave and we had so much fun with MOM, going “oh my god, that was you?! Oh but did you see the- no?- what did you see then?” Honestly, MOM is a much more entertaining co-op than DIM. But then again, I guess it depends on what sort of horror you like. To me, saw-like traps and bodily harm aren’t exciting types of scares for me. I enjoy the spooky and mysterious. That’s why MOM with its aim for ghosty-ness trumps DIM’s “run or you’ll be hacked to death”. DIM was a big letdown to me. I had big hopes for the “right choices” being less obvious but I feel like it had the most potential with least amount of harvesting of it. Not that it matters - but since I’ve written this far, and you’ve read this far, I might just cap off my opinion piece with my own tiering: 1. Until dawn (ofc) 2. House of ash (oorah!) 3. Little Hope (those monster designs 👌 And that John/Angela team-up at the end 🤌) 4. Man of Medan (👹) 5. The quarry 6. Devil in me All that to say, I LOVE playing these games, best like worst, it’s a tradition for me and my co-op buddy.
The thing that really breaks man of medan imo and in a way also little hope is that these games are made to be replayable and enjoy getting different endings etc but once you know what’s going on in man of medan it’s just done. There is no tension anymore and no risk because you can just don’t give a shit with almost all quick times and just survive
@@grodemonster9490 I’d definitely give it a go! Of course, the impact is probably best when you play blind, but Conrad is the star and has the best action so I’d say it’s worth exploring on a second run. I really don’t understand why they gave us the option to cut him out of the story before it begins. Not just because his arc holds the game’s scare-jewel, but also because he and Fliss’ arcs together give them more character development than the others. I started out hating the guy but by the end, he was up there with my series favs. And Fliss wasn’t too bad either. … But at the same time I also admired the devs’ attempt at having choices that give said character paths that diverge so dramatically. Whereas other times, it feels like choices only determines if X wears a green shirt or a white one…
I feel like the criticism of saying that most people who rated Man of Medan is because they played single player is pointless because-most people play the game alone. A good game should be good in single player as well as coop. You just have bias because you had a friend playing with you. Not a lot of other people played the game coop. Good comment though👍
Personal Rank: 1. Until Dawn- majority of the characters were likeable and I wanted to save them all 2. Little Hope- I absolutely loved the story till the end was revealed then I was severely disappointed 3. House of Ashes- loved Jason and Salim friendships however didn’t care for anyone else (love Ashley tho) 4. The Devil in me- I was very intrigued by the plot. The intro hit the ground running but the unknown villain who had nothing to do with the main characters really made me annoyed 5. Man of Medan- they literally didn’t come last because I loved Conrad and wanted him to live 6. The Quarry- I’m sorry I really wanted to like this game. But like majority of characters were unlikeable or boring af. I literally only like Dylan and I didn’t care if any of the other counselors died. To top it off, I really hoped that the main villain wouldn’t be what we expected and would subvert my expectations like until dawn.
Thank you! The amount of people here putting quarry 3 and up is concerning. After playing the demo I was sold, but after playing the game I was very let down. The characters and Sarina carpenter esc music to diffuse every situation was sooo painfully cringe. Not to mention the amount of times it felt like the game was making decisions for me.
I actually did find Man of Medan scary and pretty interesting, plus the atmosphere was great tho I'll agree that it was difficult to like most of the characters. Also, I love Little Hope's ending, it blew my mind even tho it's true your choices don't really matter I thought it was a great twist and even a reason to replay it and look at all the clues of what's really happening. I'm more into cinema so it kinda reminded me of some films. With house of ashes I struggled playing it, at the beginning it felt more like a survival game which I would've prefered to play with the mechanics of a resident evil kinda game. But the twist completely saved it for me and the characters were great, but at the beginning you already know they're gonna end up below surface and that there will be creatures following them and I wasn't surprised by that, again, until the twist happened. Also something I'm missing from Until Dawn... other characters could actually get angry at you for choices you made and betray you. I want that back, the feeling of making enemies with characters that you also control.
6) little hope I loved the monster designs, and it would be pretty high if it wasn't for the ending. It just ruined the whole experience for me, and it just doesn't make me scared 5) man of medan I definitely don't hate this game, but I liked it as a taste of what's to come. What I despised was the sheer amount of bugs I had, and the accessibility options just outright didn't work 4) house of ashes This one is only here because I never really had a chance to appreciate it. I got to play the first half, and I loved it, but I didn't get to finish it completely. It'll probs be higher once I do 😅 3)the Quarry I actually really like this game a lot. I love the 80's, I loved the cheese, and honestly pretty much all the characters, like it felt realistic and I just wanted more interactioms. I just don't think it was quite up to scratch, and wish that we had more time with other characters too. 2) devil within me I LOVED this game. It genuinely made me actually tense for the entire time, and got me so scared. And oh man I loved the mystery and being rewarded for actually paying attention to the secrets, and didn't feel like it was so obvious and that the characters were stupid for not catching up 1) Until Dawn I mean how could you not?? It defined the genre, and I was obsessed when it first came out. Unfortunately it doesn't really scare me anymore because I've played it so much lmao. Don't love the characters as much but I think it works for these characters (and I love the stupid cheesy dialogue)
I have a lot of problems with the Quarry from a story perspective compared to Until Dawn that just brought the game down for me. My biggest issue was the pacing, because it made one of the biggest mistakes you can make in writing and ground the upward momentum to a screeching halt with an extended flashback sequence right before the climax. I think Laura and Max's story would have worked better as playable epilogues to each chapter that culminated in Laura's return instead of the exposition dump we got. It was also much more predictable than Until Dawn because you could predict that the monster was a werewolf in the first few SECONDS if you were paying attention. It made the tension less palpable and I thought the creature design for them was pretty bad considering that they just looked like a more doglike Wendigo. I think it would have been better if they had chosen another obscure cryptid instead of a generic one. A massive part of what made Until Dawn work as well as it did was because the monster was something more obscure and creepy, and you didn't learn what it was until more than halfway through the game. I also didn't like how Nick was essentially written out of the story when he became a werewolf (though that might be bias because he was my favourite character and I thought the narrative screwed him over).
you could tell covid/2020 had a huge impact on the quarry, with how rushed the ending seems to be and how things seem unfinsihed. I hope one day they can remake the quarry and show its full potential
Nick just gets put in a cell next to Jacob after he turns and he can only die if you stop Laura from shooting him, which is too little for a game with an hour worth of possible death scenes. Someone had to be bitten for the plot to actually get going, so I get why there isn't a way for Nick to not turn into a werewolf.
I think it's official that the House of Ashes is the second best entire in the entire series. I loved the cast of characters, the presentation about the monsters and something lurking in the shadows was perfectly done. The lore is the best part of this game, just loved the concept of how the extraterrestial beings are a peaceful being but its the infection/disease that corrupts them.
Man of medan is also my least favorite especially because Conrad (who shares my name) literally can leave the entire plot insanely fast by doing the most obvious correct decision and then you lose a large amount of content being that he has the funnest stuff try to scare him.
The premination tells you that the boat is a bad idea. If Conrad were to survive (which you can't do at all), the game would either pretty much end, or the game still continue the same without him, and Conrad would not be able to be played with.
@@coletrainhetrick Yeah that is true and Olson's bullet could've missed. I think it's use was not handled well, as it can be a plot hole. But if the game made it clear you couldn't by the pirates interfering from Conrad getting on the boat and shooting him, it would make that scene better and be better implamented.
"It was really hard to choose-" Bish we all knew Until Dawn was going to win. Shes just......that girl. The OG, the classic, the timeless. I rewatch playthroughs of it multiple times a year, its just so campy and funny and yet still so scary?!?!?! And I actually remember the characters! Also the ending is iconic are you kidding me?!?!?!?!?
my list: man of medan - easily the worst, endings were stupid when u fail to get the engine thing like why would u go bsck on the ship u were trying to escape?? the quarry- I didn't like the werewolves, hated most of the characters. little hope- loved this game but the different timelines confused me but that's jusy bc I'm dumb house of ashes- loved the story the devil in me- I love that they used real serial killers until dawn- THE GOAT. my favourite game to ever exist, loved the characters, the storyline, the twist.
I used to have the same list, but I personally have Man of Medan above Little Hope ever since the cut ending was added back in Man of Medan about a year ago. It was actually pretty good.
thank you for mentioning accessibility options! my biggest issue with UD was the lack of accessibility especially since so many of the characters surviving depends on hitting the right QTE and not moving the controller at all. having options to extend the QTE timer and add a bit more leeway with the DONT MOVE mechanic would have made the overall experience more enjoyable (i am laughing you mentioned ms brenda but not one word about ashley tisdale in house of ashes)
That's the reason I haven't played Until Dawn. I cannot do QTEs or remain motionless like that. I would have killed everyone in no time. It's sad, because everything else about the game is actually really playable for me, which isn't always easy to find.
1. Until Dawn - duh. Emily is everything in this game. The whole lot of personality! Loved that! 2. House of Ashes - Eric is my boi, Salim and Jason are OTP 3. Quarry - nice try 4. Man of Medan - Conrad, Julia, the setting are the best parts of the game. 5. Little Hope - I kinda enjoyed that. I liked Daniel and Taylor a lot. I appreciate the reference to Silent Hill, but the final twist is so weak 6. The devil in me - Erin is the only one interesting character. Charlie is a daddy and that's it. Other characters are bland. I know that Saw vibe and serial killer may scare someone, but not me. The body horror should have been a bigger thing here, but it's not. And what are we scared of? A big guy who is nothing against a big group and unnecessary jumpscares? No, ma'am. The story just doesn't work. Not the best entry. I was really disappointed. Also, the sequences with crawling, balance and moving of objects are just boring. We are here for a detailed world and for its exploration, not for moving stuff
@@lostforever773 but he didn't kill 200 people, and he wasn't undefeatable like the game tries to show us. We have Charlie, Mark and the cop in the game at one point, and you want to say, that they are unable to defeat Munday? Gurl...
House of Ashes was a totall surprise for me. As a Sucker for H.P. Lovecrafts novels and Sci fi horror, i was NOT expecting something like THAT to be a twist in the games plot. it was AMAZING
My personally ranking (from favorite to least favorite) 1) Until dawn - the golden standard, most immersive/interesting plot, best characters, the scariest monsters, and overall the most fun 2) The quarry - a nice return to formula, I liked the cheesy 80s B movie horror feel the game had, the characters were arguable the most entertaining out of all the SM games with the best quotes and jokes (they were a little bit cringe at times but i got over it) the werewolf design was meh but they were still scary enough and the characters being able to get infected was a nice addition to the game. I thought the game had the most variety of scenarios of all the SM games as well. So not as good as until dawn but a step in the right direction 3) House of ashes - the setpieces are what make the game honestly. Outside of Salim, the characters are either boring (Nick, Eric,) or insufferable (Rachel, jason). However, I loved the vampires and all the insane sequences you have whenever you come across them. I loved the underground alien city section. Not only was it a cool design, but also so eery and creepy. So overall, I liked the game for setpieces and creatures, not the characters 4) Man of medan - the plot twist is incredibly obvious from the opening prologue so I was never scared of any of the "creatures" in the game. The pirates were not a ingaging or scary threat. the characters aren't entertaining or interesting. The acting isn't very good and facial mocap is noticeably bad at times. The environment of the game is very boring on the eyes and sometimes gave me motion sickness. HOWEVER, I do like that similar to the quarry, the variety of scenarios you can get is cool. That's the only thing really puts this game above the next two. 5) The devil in me - I WANTED to like this game so badly, but the presentation of the game is too bad to ignore. The characters are boring, the acting is awful, the mocap is awful, none of characters have any real chemistry with one another so all of the dialogue in the game is very robotic, the graphics look like a high end PS3 game, and the game is also incredibly buggy. 6) little hope - I could write an entire essay about why this game is horrible. But I'll some it up with this. As bad as Man of medan and The devil in me is, at least in that game, the decisions you make actually matter. While little hope is literally "Illusion of choice: the game".
I have the same rank with all these games as you. Little Hope had potential but that ending felt so cheap & lazy and just pissed me off. The devil in me was also disappointing as it never left me with any fear whatsoever but the plot was decent. I personally enjoyed Man of medan, it was just too damn short. House of Ashes was fantastic but the plot twist had me rolling my eyes. Couldn't find anything wrong with the Quarry or Until Dawn. And to think, the Developer is contracted to release 4 more games. :)
@@paranoyd70 I think what separates Until dawn and the quarry from The Dark pictures stuff is the fact that even if the characters in those games aren't great, they at least feel tangible. Like the actors, writers, and VFX artist involved are trying to make you believe that you're watching actual people in a horror movie. While in the dark pictures games, all the characters feel like robots that are being written and voice acted by an AI that has no idea how humans act.
Did anyone else think that the lighting in the quarry was so bad, like you couldn't even see the monster when it appeared. SPOILERS OF THE QUARRY Not to mention the transformation of the monster, I mean come on, if you are going to do a werewolf you need an amazing werewolf transformation. If American werewolf in London could do it back in the day, the quarry can do it even better.
I definitely agree that Until Dawn and the Quarry are the untouchable top two but here is my ranking from best to worst! 1. Until Dawn 2. The Quarry 3. Little Hope 4.The Devil in me 5. Man of Medan 6. House of Ashes I actually really liked little hope. It had by far the best story in my opinion and actually had me feeling tense and scared. It was hard for me to decide which I liked the least and was a toss up between man of medan and house of ashes, but I gave man of medan the higher placement just because of how excited I was to play it. Until Dawn has been my favorite game ever since it came out so when I saw supermassive was making more games I was so excited and this just made man of medan so fun for me. House of Ashes I think was just absolute garbage with the least interesting plot, lamest setting, least scary monsters, and rushed finale.
Atleast House of Ashes is the most relateble natural human interaction with environtment and scarienest, then any other teeneger who's look more scripted, but still appreciated the experience
[Major spoilers for Little Hope, kinda long but I'm passionate about this lol] I seriously think Little Hope has such a misunderstood story, the ending actually made me cry. Seeing people say the ending is the 'it was all a dream' trope is the same problem as when people misuse the word 'filler' for scenes that are slower in certain tv shows or movies, instead of realizing those slower scenes are important to flesh out characters and get you to connect to them and feel invested. The ending to Little Hope is not the ending that so many people mistake it to be. In fact, the whole story, all the time jumps, and the fact that you have to unlock 'character traits' for all the main characters except Anthony give clues about the ending and the story's themes of guilt, trauma, history, and self-forgiveness. In a real 'it was all a dream' ending, nothing happens in reality and it has no effect on the main character, rendering the whole story useless. But that isn't the case here- the whole time, Anthony is walking around in a real town, interacting with objects, talking to Tanya's old boyfriend, and visiting his old house that burned down. There's thematic depth to Anthony fighting his inner demons, visualizing them as physical demons that all his family members have to defeat and survive. Then unlocking the right character traits for his family shows whether or not he can truly remember them for how they were, not just misremember who they were before they died. Then the endings- they all depend on whether or not you get Anthony to forgive himself for the fire, forgive his youngest sister, and mourn his family members properly after decades of guilt. The actions that players make throughout the game directly affect Anthony's final actions in real life- whether or not he commits su*cide due to not forgiving himself, whether or not he gets arrested, or if he leaves the town for good and forgives himself to truly heal from his past. It's much more complicated than people are making it out to be, and there are so many people- an example being a RUclipsr like John Wolfe- who could connect to the ending of this game. So I'm just sad that a lot of people don't see it bc they only think a horror game can be good if the monsters are 'real' the whole time, even though this genre of psychological horror is one of the many subcategories within it. But if the game still isn't your cup of tea for other reasons besides the ending, that's understandable.
Yeah, I get what you're trying to say. But for me, it was quite the let down. The first parts of the game, I absolutely adore. I loved the prologue of the game, quickly setting up its tone. And the actual meat of the game actually delivers well. The witch trials and trying to save everyone was really fun. But the ending just left me confused. And it was the same sentiment for a lot of people. I feel as if the game suffers from the developers pulling back. I would have loved it if the monsters were real and that they were trying to break the cycle of them dying each generation. But instead we got this. I still like it, but I wish that the game gave better hints and clues as to what was happening. I only understood the game fully once I saw someone else explaining it to me. And I think that that is the main problem of this game. The ending feels like it came from left field.
@@alexakana5020 I understand your sentiment too! I admittedly wasn't able to fully understand the ending until I saw someone's explanation video. This doesn't mean the game did a bad job at laying the breadcrumbs tho, bc the only way ppl were able to create such specific explanations from the story was that the game distinctly provided that necessary information to the players who were following along. But it was purposely hard to follow, mostly bc they wanted the ending to wrap all the loose ends together in a shocking/sad way. Which I think is completely fine, especially for a psychological horror game- everyone has a different perspective on art and our brains work differently, so some people figured it out early while ppl like us needed some help. And personally, I just love stories that play with my emotions rather than have a satisfying or cathartic message/ending- similar to why I love TLOU2.
I agree to a point. I think what they were going for and the idea they had was amazing. I just felt it wasn't executed correctly. I felt emotions when I found out the bus driver is Anthony. And how sad he looked cuz his family was gone. The ending I got I killed everyone but Anthony. So to see him locked out of the house again and seeing his people die was so sad.
@@kimmidoll24 It definitely depends on the ending(s) you get; with all choice-based games you’ll never get the full picture or narrative by only getting one certain ending, so I don’t hold that against Little Hope or see it as a flaw. I was confused after only one playthrough, but watching a compilation helped me to finally put the pieces all together and I enjoyed what they were going for. If it were a linear game where all the endings were basically tied into one complete, neat bow, that might be more satisfying for a larger audience to experience. If you prefer a certain method of storytelling or execution I can’t argue with your opinion, but I just personally tend to enjoy stories that aren’t as straightforward (ex: time jumps, flashbacks) or require some figuring out.
For madan that scene where the creature is screaming on the top of boat in the rain and lighting was one of my favorite scenes in recent horror games that I’ve played
The moment a game does the whole “It was a hallucination!” Or “it was all in his head” The game immediately goes from 0/10. Just makes me completely not care about anything I just went through.
For me: 6) Man of Medan (most forgettable imo, so slow and I didn’t care about any of the characters. I was also so confused throughout) 5) Devil in Me (Hate every character. Mark is fine but so boring and I couldn’t care enough about any of them to try and keep them alive. Too many bugs and I was so confused about the 50/50 keeping them alive because there were no hints than made sense. But I love the concept) 4) The Quarry (I only like Dylan as a character if I’m being honest, maybe Max and Laura a tad, but everyone else was so stereotypical. But I love the pacing, story and the gore) 3) House of Ashes (Love each of the characters and I love how it doesn’t take a million years to get to the horror element, great twist) 2) Little Hope (I really love this game. Scary and sad with the psychological horror element and I had the most fun playing it) 1) Until Dawn (I never get over how good it is)
I thought the twist in HoA was garbage. I just want some something supernatural without a stupid twist. The problem with most dark pictures games is the characters suck. The quarry was alright but it needed more development time i think. And imo bad characters like Dylan and Jacob drag the game down a bit. Until Dawn is still the gold standard for this company. They need to get Larry Fessenden to write characters/story for their other games.
To me, Little Hope was very disappointing. When I was playing it I got more invested with the story then I did with Man of Medan. But what killed the game for me was that by the end, none of the choices, save two, in the entire game didn't matter. They had the games ending tied to the last choice in the game. Nothing else factored in. That is criminal no matter how you look at it.
Until Dawn is just one of those horror games that's a classic, and it's going to be hard to ever top it, but The Quarry comes so close and definitely deserves to be called a spiritual successor. I think The Quarry unfortunately has too many plot holes for it to top Until Dawn for me but the production value or a specific favorite character could easily tip it in either direction for someone else.
I haven't played Devil In Me yet(briefly started but not outright played...so I skipped that one), but I put the titles in nearly identical order. A piece of me may put The Quarry at the #1 spot, but maybe it's because I haven't played it as much as Until Dawn & still have some things to unlock & discover. Your reasoning is very well paced, and you did a nice job at explaining just enough to avoid apoiler territory. Great work.
This is EXACTLY my ranking too! 1) Until Dawn first obviously 2) The Quarry second because I knew there will be werevolves the moment when the full moon appeared, but in Until Dawn wendigos were for me just unexpected and far more interesting, otherwise amazing story, characters etc. 3) Little Hope because of the plot twist ending and different time periods connected to each other 4) The Devil in Me because H. H. Holmes (games based on a true stories are amazing; I know that the other ones are based on true stories or at least real myths, but H. H. Holmes is so well known and interesting) 5) Man of Medan had one big downside; if you kill Conrad early, the game has just a few interesting parts 6) House of Ashes felt like an action game; games (and movies) about war and soldiers are not for me; and I don't like Ashley Tisdale...
Here is my ranking from worst to best: 6. House Of Ashes - I hate the war setting and I hated what the creatures turned out to be. 5. Man Of Medan - After Until Dawn, I was SO looking forward to this game and was very disappointed. 4. The Quarry - Eh, I thought it was ok. Didn't care for it very much. 3. The Devil In Me - Was pretty good. Not as good as I hoped it would be, but I still enjoyed it. Can't really complain about it. 2. Little Hope - I loved it, I absolutely loved it! The ending shocked me. I was NOT expecting it. 1. Until Dawn - I was a few years late to the Until Dawn party, but when I played it, I got hooked and I was obsessed with it. I remember forgetting I was playing a game and thought I was watching a movie because of how fantastic the graphics were. I've played this game so so so SO many times, it's not even funny. Favorite character is probably Mike, least favorite is Emily.
House of ashes is the best game for me, not a typical horror slasher, good charakters and a nice story :) The second is The devil in me. I love the SAW mechanic :)
My list. 1. Until Dawn (easily) gotta love the scary vibe like easily the darkest. 2. The devil in me. (The kills, the grim undertone, the true crime vibe) 3. House of ashes (LOVEE the pazuzu vibes in this one, 4. The quarry- definitely more campy, quite literally. Very lovable characters. Gameplay just lacked a little bit. 5. Little hope( eerie, more story based, a little slow) 6. Man of Medan- easily my least favorite, just losses itself amongst the others. Hated every character other than fliss
Until Dawn and House of Ashes are literally the only games in the entire series to have actual good writing from start to finish (I'd argue Salim and Jason have the best character development Supermassive has ever written for any of the games), no wonder they are both fan favourites so far.
My personal ranking: 1. Until Dawn. I love everything about it. The monsters, the story, the characters. All great. 2. Little hope. I think this game was great actually. I loved figuring out what all of the monsters were and the twist was my favorite part. It was actually scary for me and I love the atmosphere. 3. Man of Medan. Again the twist was so great! It was heavily alluded to in the beginning, but I don't think that took away from it at all. It was really cool to play the shared story mode and to not really know what was going on with the other stories. 4. The quarry. I honestly didn't care a whole lot about this game while I was playing it. I thought the monsters were like they were trying to use the wendigos from until dawn again, but slightly different and I wish it was a little different. It was okay. I wouldn't play it again. 5. House of Ashes. I went into this game expecting it to be similar to the first 2 games with a cool twist at the end with a deeper meaning, but it just ended up being weird alien vampire creatures. I feel like if I had different expectations going in, I would've liked it more, but because they set this precedent, I was disappointed. I did like the atmosphere and it was a cool story, but I didn't like it that much. 6. The Devil In Me. I didn't know what to expect, but I thought the story was cool. I am very interested in the H. H. Holmes case, so I was excited. The thing that really ruined it for me was the fact that I got 2 characters killed because there was no indicators or any way to know how to save them. Like in the suffocation room with Kate and Erin. You had to just guess on which person you got killed. How was I supposed to know that Kate's room wasn't sealed all the way?! That doesn't make sense. And the H. H. Holmes dude being in places that are impossible for him to have gotten to? Weird. The end wasn't bad though.
i'm a bit late to the party but happy spooky season to all who are either playing for the first time or playing the games again! my personal rankings are as follows: 1. until dawn 2. house of ashes 3. the quarry 4. the devil in me (not my favorite story/gameplay wise but definitely the scariest IMO and i appreciate the ways they tried to differentiate this installment with the different gameplay mechanics!) 5. little hope (i actually really loved the story/witch trials part of this game, but it definitely feels like Walking Simulator at times, especially if you're achievement hunting) 6. man of median (nothing aginst it, just very low replay value IMO!)
1. Until Dawn - all characters are balanced like at first you can't see the main character 2. House of Ashes - The plot of enemies to friends is just great 3. The Devil in Me - I just love that the plot is like Saw 4. The Quarry - I love the Characters but there's just some missed parts like Emma's bracelet being nonsense, Kaitlyn not shooting most of the time, Jacob not screaming while in the bush, and the ending is rushed, and why most of them always die at QTE 5. Little Hope - I love the plot but the ending... It just feels like you are saving them for nothing 6. Man of Medan: For me Plot sucks, the characters are weird and doesn't make sense, and please stop dying from QTE it's supposed to be choices game
I didn't get that feeling at all with Little Hope. The ending made the game soo great. He had dissociative personality disorder, and each character of his family was one of his own personalities post-mortem. It seemed inspired by the movie "Identity" which is pretty great imo
@@dhietheowrgh912 I feel ya, we can appreciate the devs for mixing it up for all of us. Devil in me is ranked last, I was so hyped for it. Such disregard for natural human fight or flight instincts and, a crazy copycat killer that was really bad at killing people, albeit playing with his "food". Until Dawn is still my favorite by a decent margin for sure.
The bracelet does play a small role if you make the choices to get to see that role. jacob in the bushes i agree with your point there that one made 0 sense it def didnt play into jacobs personality but for peanut butter pops trophy is the only reason it makes sense. certain qte fails do result into deaths but the hardest part is some qte fails only result into bites to get the characters infected and to pop the blood pact trophy, but can also still save everyone even infected. they could have done a little more with the ending when discussing the survivors and deceased but went with the 80s ending vibe which was kinda cool. if having to sit through that long ass podcast at the end during the credits should have made that interactive or showed more of what happened to the characters when the police showed up at the end and make it clear if they heard ryan and dylans radio call or if the very brief 911 call was traced or how they got there. cuz theres 186 different outcomes that play on that podcast screen but no ones going to play it that many times just for the credits to see what headlines pop up.
1. Until Dawn - My all time favourite game in general honestly. So good. Don't need to elaborate really. 2. House of Ashes - Just a well rounded game with a cool story, cool settings and good interesting characters. *cough* Salim and Jason *cough* The best of the Anthology so far. 3. The Quarry - was very promising and was on par with Until Dawn for me until that horrendous ending ruined it all. 4. The Devil in Me - A fun time and I love the reveal if you only manage to keep Mark and Kate alive til the last chapter. One of the best alternate endings of all the games. The story was fun and I like that the developers tried to improve things by adding extra mechanics and ways to interact. I loved the concept, it just wasn't executed as well as I'd liked. 5. Little Hope - The game just doesn't have any replay value after finding out that everything was just all in Andrews head. Makes everything you do seem pointless. The opening scene with the fire was great though. 6. Man of Medan - Same thing as Little Hope with the "it was all in your head" trope except this was just bad, but it's understandable since it was the first one of the Anthology so it was kind of the guinea pig to see what would work and what wouldn't. I didn't care about any of the characters and was just going through the motions. Not good.
The Quarry should have an ending where we can cure everyone and save the first werewolf, that old woman's son It's a shame there wasn't an ending,I felt there was a lack of explanation as to how the werewolf's illness came about,The story of this crazy family and how the old woman died and was haunted and became a ghost protecting her son,if he was born like this or was cursed by his mother or was it an accident of illness A shame it wasn't... And I'm still waiting for more games from the The dark pictures anthology franchise Season 2 And a Until Dawn 2 🤔😔🥺🤧 Like and Bye!
My personal rank scary and "scary" Supermassive Games: 1. The Quarry 2. Until Dawn 3. House of Ashes 4. Little Hope 5. Man of Medan 6. The Devil In Me 7. The Casting of Frank Stone
the random thing that always stands out about until dawn to me is mike's character progression. when the game starts, it's beyond easy to clock him as the douchey jock character that only thinks he's tough but as the story progresses, it's like "oh, wait, you have actual heroic and loyal tendencies? like, legitimate bravery?" it becomes apparent that if mike just ditches the douchey, cocky attitude, he would be a genuinely great guy to have in your life. idky that's what sticks with me so much
Night Trap would be a great remake for Supermassive ;) I enjoyed this video. I think my list would look like this: 7. The Devil in Me. The glitches and bugs really hampered my experience, and it's unusual for Supermassive to release something so unpolished. Nice to have a human villain instead of monsters, but Holmes is boring since he doesn't talk anyway, so it was basically the same difference. Did not like any of the characters at all, so I didn't care who died. 6. Little Hope. A little dull for me. The opening chapter in the house showed a lot of promise. I wish the game had stuck with that. Cause what it does with the characters and the timelines for the rest of it, I found to be very convoluted. Then there's that ending, which is a massive copout. Huge pet peeve of mine. Only positive is I liked the witch trial inspirations. 5. Hidden Agenda. A little known PS4 game some might have missed, but it was the first new followup Supermassive did after Until Dawn. It's a thriller in the same gameplay style as that and The Dark Pictures... but you only play as 2 characters (a detective and a D.A.) dealing with a serial killer known as The Trapper. It's very much in the mold of the movie Se7en. Its ok. 4. Man of Medan. Starts slow, (real slow) but it picks up in the second half. I really got into it once they finally got to the ship. Game's exactly in the middle because it's very 'middle-of-the-pack' for me. The atmosphere works, and I liked at least 2 out of the 4 cast members, so this gave me people to care about. But again, it has some ending problems. 3. The Quarry. It's just nice to have a well-produced 'big' game from these guys again. Most of the camp counselors annoyed me, but they did feel like real people, and in any case the story is fantastic. I only wish the monsters weren't so similar to Until Dawn's. I also wish there was more actual gameplay because this one most feels like just watching a movie. 2. House of Ashes. The evolved choices really make this a step above what had come before up this point. As did the cast. If it wasn't clear, these appeal to me most depending on how much I like the characters. HoA, which actually provides an arc for two people on opposite sides of a conflict, easily has the best character work of any of these games. 1. Until Dawn. Still their best. Most appealing for its cast, and I still think that's what all these games since The Quarry have been missing: Dumb horny teens are the most fun! Relatively speaking, I was already used to Telltale and Quantic Dream choice-based games by now, but the totems, investigative pieces, and "Butterfly Effect" system found here were all nice, novel touches.
I really liked little hope the ending was so surprising when you first play the only thing I hate is that you can keep everyone alive and they still die
My ranking: 1. until dawn: blend of good but still stereotypical character teens surrounded by a good story and a great threat that is the wendigo. Ps if I spelled wendigo wrong I’m sorry 2. Man of Medan: I liked the characters and the story was smaller and shorter which made it more bite sized than until dawn but the threat of the story should have just been literal ghosts instead of chemicals 3. The quarry: werewolves are always awesome and I liked the setup, however the ending sucked and key character relationships weren’t explored enough like with the nick character. 4. House of ashes: Vampires + aliens= awesome. I hate putting it this low. The characters are great except for the redhead chick. My only complaint is that it felt kinda slow in some places and the lore also was kinda funky. This one could switch with the quarry or man of Medan any time so yeah it’s pretty good 5. Little hope: the twist was cool but it kinda took away from all this lore it built up and it flipped all of it upside down, however I did like the twist, it’s just I don’t think the twist was worth it for the rest of the game I haven’t played the devil in me yet but it looks kinda dog shit so I don’t know if I even want to play it
imo: 1. until dawn. a literal video game classic at this point. 2. the quarry. imo, the characters in the quarry are the best in any supermassive game. most of them feel very fleshed out and like real people. it's like they took the characters from UD (which are still great, dont get me wrong) but expanded their personalities so they weren't just horror stereotypes. 3. house of ashes. the best game in the DPA and quite easily. the premise is the most interesting to me, Jason has the best character development out of ANY supermassive game and they actually pulled off a twist that didn't end up ruining the game lmao. 4. little hope. maybe this is unpopular, but I love little hope. Angela is hilarious and it had the best atmosphere out of any DPA game for me. the group stumbling around the town in the quiet, eerie night was just awesome. sucks that the game was all a hallucination tho. 5. the devil in me. I didn't HATE this game, but there were things I didn't like about it. du'met as a villain was kinda weird because unless youre actively searching for clues about him, you can go through the entire game not knowing shit about him. also, if he isnt supernatural, then idk what the hell he is because he has to be teleporting. 6. man of medan. I hated this one
To me, The Quarry was way too similar to Until Dawn. It’s basically the same story, just in a summer setting. My personal ranking: 1. Devil In Me 2. House of Ashes 3. Until Dawn 4. The Quarry 5. Man of Medan 6. Little Hope
I just can’t agree with putting Devil in Me above House of Ashes, I genuinely REALLY liked House of Ashes and thought it was far more comparable to the bigger budget games of Until Dawn and the Quarry. But Devil in Me felt so convoluted and goofy in comparison, the plot holes were annoying and the faces looked much worse than House of Ashes for some reason. I just didn’t find myself loving it like I did House of Ashes…
I liked The Quarry the most because I feel like it has the most different outcomes that could happen. The game can even end in chapter 9 instead of 10, I made a video on it on my channel. I’m The Quarry, the are a lot of choices in the game that will matter in the end. For example, picking up that toy in chapter 1 can help save Kate in chapter 10. If you get to that point cause she can survive without depending on what happens earlier. I feel like in Until Dawn there’s only one ending when the games ends in the lodge everytime. It would depend on what characters are there in the end but it will always be Sam and Mike cause they can only die in chapter 10. I do like Until Dawn the second most.
Honestly It's a tie between the Quarry and Until Dawn for me. Both are interesting and it's monsters are based on creatures i have had an obsession with since I was a kid. The thing about the Quarry is. If it wasn't for the creature design and the fact that it doesn't have an epilogue at least for the most part. Unless you count the ending credits, Until Dawn has interviews at the end with those who survived. It felt like a true epilogue. While I love the Quarry, Until Dawn might be a little above it.
1] Until Dawn - The GOAT 2] The Quarry - Cast was incredible 3] House Of Ashes - Would love to see more Lovecraftian themes in DPA 4] Devil In Me - Just a tad predictable, but loved the overall concept 5] Man of Medan - I liked the characters lol 6] Little Hope - Utter disappointment, seemed like it got schedule crunched out and would have been better with another year in dev
Yes, exactly my list. The first 4 are deep in my heart. I played devil in me and house of ashes this week and I was so surprised how well this two are made. Sure some bugs here and there, but nothing that makes you resentful towards the game. Little hope had some good potential, but I didn’t enjoyed it at all.
I really feel like the Quantic Dream games were the catalyst for this style of game, like Indigo Prophecy, Heavy Rain, etc. it would be cool to see those ranked with these games as well.
Its totally diferent games, supermassive is focus in survival, the quantic dream is focused in create ur own story, If u lose a character in supermassive games you lost some information or plot, in quantic dream the story keep going with the plot because the focus is create ur story, they not punish you for losing a character
Indigo Prophecy was so good. Kinda old school now. Time flies when your having fun I guess. I meant to play heavy rain, but I never got around to it. I should see if its still available somewhere.
Don't forget Detroit for PS4. I will say this: I platinumed Until Dawn twice on my 2 profiles. I have Heavy Rain, Beyond Two Souls, and Detroit and have no desire to play any of them to platinum those. I just dug Until Dawn so much more, and am curious to try Dark Picture games. I didn't know what they were, I think I got one on PSN+ and never played it not knowing what it was.
House of Ashes is my personal favourite, the setting of the game and action was awesome while actually having monsters, only one I haven’t played is Devil in me
my ranking (pretty long comment so bear with me): ALSO SPOILER WARNING 5. man of medan & little hope - i don't hate either of these games but i can see why they received a negative response. the most tense part of man of medan was pretty early (conrad trying to escape on the boat), and the fact that all the supernatural stuff they saw was an illusion felt quite underwhelming. with little hope, i appreciate the exploration of grief and the ending is honestly really sad but this game also just wasn't what people expected, and i don't like how unclear they were about how much personality traits mattered. i like how they delved into the salem witch trials, though given the ending it feels a bit pointless now. the only character i felt really attached to was andrew / anthony, although angela had some funny lines. 4. the quarry - it's a nice game overall, and i really like dylan and laura as characters. the graphics are really impressive and the scene with the crane in the junkyard is honestly my fave, it's really cool. the cast did a really good job as well, although i have to say some of the dialogue they were given was pretty cringey lol (not all of it tho, there were some funny moments too). the main thing that let this game down for me is the ending. it felt so abrupt and characters were separated and there wasn't a final boss battle or anything. dylan and ryan had a cool dynamic but they were just separated and never reunited again so their relationship felt unfinished to me. jacob was also a character i was expecting to have some sort of character arc / development (kind of expected him to be like the mike or jason of the game) but he kind of just stayed the same which was a bit disappointing. 3. the devil in me - some parts of this game were goofy and there were a lot of bugs, but i still think it's a good installment for tdpa. having a human killer creates an opportunity for some of the coolest deaths and scariest moments: characters aren't just mauled to death in seconds but rather have to anticipate a slow, agonising death whilst begging for their lives. i also like all the new game functions they added (like characters having their own inventories, jumping, climbing, etc). some really nice acting as well, for kate and charlie in particular. 2. house of ashes - i know this game had a mixed response but i honestly love it. it has some of the best action sequences from supermassive and imo the ending is their best yet (character arcs are complete, all lore is explained, all characters are reunited if alive and it has the right amount of tension to feel satisfying, plus an interrogation scene at the end). some people say the characters were a weakness of the game and tbh i can see why they would think that for eric, rachel, and nick but honestly i think jason and salim are some of the coolest characters from supermassive. salim is all around great and a character you really want to save and jason, although annoying at first, has some great development and some layers to him as well. 1. until dawn - still iconic, the story is campy but still really well executed. some great one-liners (i.e. "understand the palm of my hand b*tch") and although some characters are walking stereotypes there are some interesting / complex ones (josh). some great tense moments and the "don't move" sequence works really well because it means the player has to actually mimic the character.
The quarry being lower than House of ashes and the devil in me is very odd. Even if the characters in the quarry were "cringe" at times, they at least felt tangible. Like the actors, writers, and VFX artist involved were trying to make you believe that you're watching actual people in a horror movie. While in the dark pictures games, all the characters act, talk, and feel like robots that are being written by an AI that has no idea how humans act.
@@knightfallprotocol Honestly I would rate the quarry lower then most of the other games as well. I didn’t like how they handled some characters (Nick) and how a lot of the game your choices don’t really matter.
@@Thecastaway131 I'm so sick of that "Your choices don't matter" claim when I can literally break down in bullet point format why that is OBJECTIVELY false. How you feel about certain characters is subjective, so I'm not gonna argue with that. But as said, at least in the quarry, I felt like I was watching actual people and not a bunch of robots being written and voice acted by an AI like in most of the dark pictures games.
@@knightfallprotocol I totally agree that in TDPA games the characters aren’t the best, I’m not trying to say otherwise. For me personally my first play through of The Quarry was great and I really enjoyed it, but on my second I just didn’t feel like the story branches out much. Nick is pointless, he doesn’t ever get a chase scene. Then he randomly has that sexual assault vibe with Abigail like wtf. Personally the writing for the characters in The Quarry just isn’t it, Kaitlin doesn’t even get a chance to get with Ryan when you choose her over Dylan AS Ryan.
@@knightfallprotocol Your right choices matter in all the games but to a certain extent. We can argue all day about what choices make a difference in each game because it’s a game about choices. You have to understand we are talking about how much the story branches out and in my opinion The Quarry doesn’t branch out as much as others.
my ranking would be (i haven't played the devil in me yet) 1.until dawn; a classic, the plot twist were amazing as the "killers" weren't really the antagonists of the story, the characters are on another level and the jumpscare were so freaking scary. the butterfly effect makes so sense, i literally loved the fact that an event occurred a year ago was the main reason for what happened in the game. house of ashes; hoa is a more adventure like horror, it doesn't have many jumpscares, but the game manages to be scary and mysterious even without being extremely sinister. it's a unusual horror, and it reminds me of invasion of the body snatchers, one of my favourite films. also the characters were amazing, with the eric-nick-rachel triangle, salim and jason and they were not flat 3.little hope; many people don't love it for the final plot twist, but i like it for that as well. tha story was amazing, the witch trials make me shit in my pants, but you know what is also scary? those fucking jumpscares with the little kid, those were. exotic. 4.the quarry; i didn't really love the characters and i tried to kill emma and jacob in every way possible, i succeeded in the end. also they're stupid af why would you go out if the main person just said "don't do it". there is a massive problem and it is the ending, which is painly flat. i would have liked to see them standing up and maybe reuniting again, instead of just standing up. we don't get to see what happens after and it was just sad. 5.man of medan; the real story of the ship was the most scariest for me between the other two games of the anthology. i actually liked the game but it's the game that i forgot the most between these, like, i can't remember anything. but it didn't really grew up on me like the other games did, but i remember it being scary.
Yeah Man of Medan is my least favorite. I tried to enjoy it but the story just wasn’t goin enough to enjoy. It wasn’t scary and it only got me once with a cheap shot jump scare. I liked Little Hope but the ending was kinda disappointing. The bulk of the story including the trial stuff is interesting it’s the very end that disappoints. Initially I didn’t like House of Ashes but it’s really grown on me. Interesting story and this time has an interesting and satisfying ending. The Devil in Me is my favorite of the anthology. It was interesting the entire time and had a good ending. I also like how even in the end it’s a mystery. The Quarry had a fun story that was interesting. Ending was nowhere near as good as Until Dawn’s but I think the story makes up for it. Until Dawn is just unbeatable. Interesting story with multiple twists, great cast, interesting characters, huge character development, good ending. There were characters that I hated in the start and ended up liking in the end.
Until dawn is wayyy clear of quarry, in my opinion the characters are way more interesting and the story, setting and cinematography are perfect. There has never been a monster as good as the wendigo in any other choice based horror
I think I'm in the minority, but I rank House of Ashes last. The Aliens thing didn't appeal to me, and it seemed super forced in. Not to mention how unpolished it looked. But more importantly, I think the series lost some of the tension that earlier entries had when they moved away from having only a fixed camera angle. As soon as they introduced camera controls, they became more horror adventure games.
Until dawn is definitely the one with the biggest impact. But house of ashes I think beats both quarry and the devil in me. To me at least. I respect the list!
Medan is highly underrated to me. Fun characters (especially Conrad if he makes it to the ship) and quite a large variety of outcomes. Hope was easily my least favorite. Didn’t care much for the setting beyond the cool fog gimmick, and felt like choices ultimately didn’t matter much. Ashes was pretty great thanks in large part to Jason and the man, myth and legend that is Salim. Devil in Me I think I was disappointed in overall (was expecting much more of a Saw vibe and I only recall one or two traps the whole game) - but it was still fun, and I’ll play it again (liked the characters more than I expected to). Quarry was pretty good, other than the weird exploding werewolves, and Until Dawn is yes, probably still the best. Both games more fun than the Dark Pictures because they’re much bigger / larger casts to work with. But I still enjoy Dark Pictures games for their annual release and unique horror experiences, especially doing movie night mode with the same group of friends every year.
just finished the first run through of the quarry. i liked it, and like this genre/type of game. have just bought the anthology as well, but I'm waiting for the PS5 remaster of Until Dawn before i get it
personally i enjoyed the quarry the most, while until dawn was definitely scarier the gameplay was very eh. Replaying it for the trophies felt more annoying and like a chore, while with the quarry it was really fun seeing all the different endings, and somehow the gameplay was better... even though its pretty much the same.
My list (ranking it story wise, to keep it simple): Worst: Little Hope - concept is cool, atmosphere is great, but characters are not only bland, but annoying to watch. Nothing special about the story besides witch trial sections Slightly better: House of Ashes - characters were insanely bland, tho Salim was cool, but the story is mostly just copy paste shooting sequences with unintimidating monsters Alright: Man Of Medan - characters dynamics were interesting, even if the characters don't have too much depth. Story has a lot of creative ideas, and it branches a ton, but the short length and abrupt ending really drag the game down Pretty good: The Devil In Me - characters have a ton of influence on each other, they're also well developed, with well defined personality traits that make them likeable. Story has a lot of interesting moments, tho kinda cliched. The game falls apart in the last 2 hours, it almost forgets it has a story. It just makes you walk as a character for 30 minutes, and pastes a du'met chase scene, and repeats that formula Very good: Until Dawn, most interesting ideas and story in any of the games, but the story barely branches, and characters, while likeable, aren't really memorable Great: The Quarry, best characters, and while the scenarios aren't as cool as Until Dawn, it's still way more fun to watch, although the anti climactic ending and character irrelevance weigh it down
I MOSTLY agree with this list, but I would switch house of ashes and the devil in me. For me, the setpieces and creatures and levels in house of ashes are what saved the game even if the characters are boring (With the exception of salim). In The devil in me, the characters, acting, writing, pacing, and perfomance was so bad that the game felt like a chore to get through. And I don't like having to drag myself through a game just to say I beat it.
I'm surprised that for little hope, you didn't mention the fact that none of the choices matter because the entire plot of the game takes place in someone's head. Which is the reason why I call little hope "Illusion of choice: the game"
@@knightfallprotocol well characters i don't agree with, they were my favorite in DPA series, acting was about equally as bad as it is all the time, but that's mostly when it comes to the way characters react to each other, but i feel like in other ways this has the best acting in the DPA series, at least when it comes to the way the characters express pain (Kate and Jamie were great with that), writing was okay, but i think the full story shoul've been obvious in any ending, and not just the bad one, pacing i agree was kinda bad, performance doesn't matter here, since i'm reviewing it from a storytelling standpoint
@@knightfallprotocol the fact that i didn't point out little hope's shitty ass ending is because i played the game for the first time, already knowing about that twist, and most people seem to hate little hope for it immediately while finishing, and never get themselves immersed into the story again, cause they don't replay it. Since i already played it knowing about the twist, it made me not really care about it that much, since most of the time these games don't really conclude much anyway, so the experience was mostly the same for me - just play it to see who i save and kill
I love The Quarry and Until Dawn, but I think I like the Quarry better, mainly because I get spooked easily and it doesn’t have as much scares as Until Dawn, and I just like characters and story better. I wish The Quarry had a better ending though, and the creatures kinda just look like a copy paste of the Wendigos in Until Dawn. Overall they are both really great and are probably my two favorite from Supermassive games.
I waited a long time to play Quarry because I had read subpar reviews but i just finished and its awesome. some of its frustrating and i understand why people think its not as good as Until Dawn but its still an S tier title imo. its so fun to see how your first playthrough goes too. My first Until Dawn i saved everyone except the black dude all the way til the end then i lost like 3 people in the final scene, then in Quarry i lost almost everyone but Abi and emma and didnt break the curse. the end podcast in Quarry was so annoying i didnt even listen so i dont know if the girls ended up in jail
I personally love all the games, but house of ashes and the Jason and Salim dynamic really does it for me. When Jason goes back to save Salim despite he clearly brain washed American mentally( and yes I say brainwashed because Jason says he was just high and didn’t even know 9/11 happened til weeks after
i disagree with many things said here (the quarry praise especially) but i always enjoy watching videos about the anthology and supermassive in general, so good video
I think the thing that killed it for me was kust the ending
Werewolves looked really good if you really check out there details
There were too many cheap ass jumpscares in Until Dawn for me to enjoy the story.
Emily is so slay
Until dawn definitely has the most interesting and cohesive story, as well as actually being scary with interesting characters. The quarry, for example, is good but could be better with richer dialogue, scarier werewolves, and better endings
@@bluehour1236there were no werewolves in until dawn. There were Wendigos.
@@orcaniusstorm7352 read it again. they are referring to the werewolves in "the quarry"
Holmes).
Out of all, I love the one in Man of Medan. Little Hope, in terms of lores, fall extremely to the bottom.
“True stories”
A conspiracy theory has it that HH Holmes was not just America's first known serial killer but was what the serial killer from Whitechapel in London commonly known as Jack the Ripper went by after he disappeared. As he was never caught by British authorities.
@@swilliams23 except for house of ashes which was a myth
The Quarry would be my favorite if it had an actual ending 😢

Ending could of been better
@@Frosty_Da_Grower420whole game coulda been
I was shocked that there wasn’t an epilogue after chapter ten, and the only main character I didn’t save was Nick. The game was captivating but then it just ends with no closure, for a game that’s half teen-drama it feels very awkward ending in such a cold and abrupt way
@@babyqeels there is an epilogue but it’s not the traditional one
Until Dawn was such a strong first game for them. They got the pacing perfectly, the graphics were amazing, the characters were realistic, well-acted and you spent a fair amount of time with each of them (obvs some more than others). I think the reason the subsequent games haven't hit as hard is that:
A) they haven't managed to stick the endings.
You can't replicate that 👌
7 years later i still bloody love that game despite never having physically played it 😂 And of course I love seeing all the new games they bring out too. Just nothing hits the same as good ol Until Dawn
I will say the one thing the later games have done better is indicate what your choices will end up as
Highly agree. I heard rumors of UD2 and at least 4 new Dark Anthology games
Here’s my personal ranking, for all who will listen:
1. Until Dawn - Obvious choice and I feel like it has the best jumpscares in the entire “series”
Where does The Inpatient go on your list the prequel to it all.
@@trent2kg813 yes! so many people say it’s cheesy or cringey but i love how it leans into the stereotypical teen horror tropes at the beginning. it makes the twist so much more rewarding. as far as horror monsters go this game takes the cake for me.
i think L. Fessenden definitely had to have been the ace in the hole with that first game, it’s just so SO well layered a story.
In your opinion why is Erin more interesting than someone like Jamie?
I just felt that Erin’s fears and personal struggle were a little more present than I’m Jamie’s character which we practically learn nothing about. With Erin we understand she’s a young intern interested in having a higher status in her job and gaining some respect, however to do this she has to battle her personal struggles such as her fear and her physical limitations (asthma).
Characters in the Devil In Me are meant to die more easily, as you can clearly see from the Curator´s obsession with it in the end. The game basically forces you to lose some characters, as you are up against perhaps the most intimidating adversary you have faced in the games, at least so far.
erin was the worst character though. jamie and kate were both really good and mark was alright.
Conrad honestly carried man of medan, People who got him killed really saw only like 50% of the games good side
100% agreed. I’m convinced people who rank it low do so because they lost him/saved him at the beginning. Also, co-oping this game is so much fun due to all the mindfuckery!
I kept him alive still the game was mid. But ya he indeed Carried it@@Circletwice
Especially if you get the ending where Conrad fights the pirate captain in the hull
@@HiteshKumar_108Understandable. Saving Him Early or getting him killed early makes Man of Medan so much more boring that Little Hope seem like an actually decent game, despite that games equally wack twist.
I loved House of Ashes. I want a direct sequel to it.
That would be awesome. Probably won’t happen but that felt like a story that could just keep going.
Directive 8020 lets be honest seems like a direct sequel
Well Winterfold is supposed to be a prequel to that exact game, so close enough
The only good The Dark Pictures game
This game is the only one I want to see a sequel to or something related to it, there are so many things that can still be explored
i will never forgive the lack of a proper ending for the quarry. such a cool game, interesting and lovable characters, super funny dialogue, the visuals are great, the character models are only really wonky in the eyes (and lauras hair in chapter 10 for some reason. why hasn't that been fixed???), but the lack of closure makes it soooooo unsatisfying. i don't have much hope, but i still wish for them to add an actual ending at some point.
It's my favourite game too
That stupid ending ruins my entire enjoyment of the game.
Ending ruins it.
I actually love the ending on how the real monster was mental health and not an actual scary demon
But anyways from best to worst, here we go:-
1. Until Dawn
2. Little Hope- I was surprised to see this one placed so low, I loved the atmosphere of this game & the settings it explores. Also really appreciated the plot twist ending as I felt like it actually fit really well & was a bit of a mindfk.
3. House of Ashes
4. The Quarry
5. Devil in me
6. Man of Medan
Both Devil in me & The Quarry I played on release & the lack of “shared story” mode definitely made an impact on my opinions of them, also Devil in me was buggy as hell & could hardly take it seriously at all while just laughing at all the bugs
I didn’t like the little hope’s ending because for me it made the game unreplayable. What’s the point to go back and see what characters you could save when yk they all are not real.
this is the correct opinion
The set pieces are amazing, also Ashley Tisdale :p
3. The Devil in Me - This could’ve been on par if it wasn’t so buggy on release. People don’t like the characters, but I actually do. The mystery was fun to solve in this one and I love escape rooms in real life and it kinda felt like that. Like the deaths in the game and that you can save a doggo (even tho I lost only Jamie in my OG play through and it was to save said dog :/)
5. Little Hope - This would honestly be in my top 3 if it had just been real lol
I’m always pumped for their releases.

literally agree with everything, the quarry and the devil in me are way too overhyped imo
Swap Little Hope and The Quarry and you've got my list

So the Salem witch trial twist really pulled me in. Plus I like the New England accent way more than say the accent of someone from London.
@@phaxzivodsya buggin with little hope way higher than house of ashes
@@AliAiham if I were you I would save until dawn and the quarry for last because they are regarded as the best. Maybe skip man of Medan. Play little hope, house of ashes, the devil in me, the quarry and play the best one until dawn last.
House of ashes is preferably my favorite game out of the series. The undeniably creepy situation of a hive of aliens have been brewing under these ancient burial grounds is great.
Yeah , kinda even scarier than Until Dawn and the Quarry
Mike in until dawn is the best character. You can make him the biggest badass in any of the games with the choices you make. Until dawn is my favorite but I think quarry is a 1a 1b game imo. But I do like where the dark pictures is going each game got better and better, can’t wait for the next “season”
frogeted emily and sam
Not that it matters - but since I’ve written this far, and you’ve read this far, I might just cap off my opinion piece with my own tiering:
1. Until dawn (ofc)
2. House of ash (oorah!)
3. Little Hope (those monster designs 👌 And that John/Angela team-up at the end 🤌)
4. Man of Medan (👹)
5. The quarry
6. Devil in me
All that to say, I LOVE playing these games, best like worst, it’s a tradition for me and my co-op buddy.
The thing that really breaks man of medan imo and in a way also little hope is that these games are made to be replayable and enjoy getting different endings etc but once you know what’s going on in man of medan it’s just done. There is no tension anymore and no risk because you can just don’t give a shit with almost all quick times and just survive
Damn. I did have Conrad escape in the beginning. Maybe I need to give it another shot
Personal Rank:
1. Until Dawn- majority of the characters were likeable and I wanted to save them all
2. Little Hope- I absolutely loved the story till the end was revealed then I was severely disappointed
3. House of Ashes- loved Jason and Salim friendships however didn’t care for anyone else (love Ashley tho)
4. The Devil in me- I was very intrigued by the plot. The intro hit the ground running but the unknown villain who had nothing to do with the main characters really made me annoyed
5. Man of Medan- they literally didn’t come last because I loved Conrad and wanted him to live
6. The Quarry- I’m sorry I really wanted to like this game. But like majority of characters were unlikeable or boring af. I literally only like Dylan and I didn’t care if any of the other counselors died. To top it off, I really hoped that the main villain wouldn’t be what we expected and would subvert my expectations like until dawn.
the quarry was just boring i agree
Dude how can you like Dylan
@@SarukiLIASDylan was the only one who had a decent character development. Not to mention decent acting.
Like Emma i killed her on purpose lol
6) little hope
I loved the monster designs, and it would be pretty high if it wasn't for the ending. It just ruined the whole experience for me, and it just doesn't make me scared
5) man of medan
I definitely don't hate this game, but I liked it as a taste of what's to come. What I despised was the sheer amount of bugs I had, and the accessibility options just outright didn't work
4) house of ashes
This one is only here because I never really had a chance to appreciate it. I got to play the first half, and I loved it, but I didn't get to finish it completely. It'll probs be higher once I do 😅
3)the Quarry
I actually really like this game a lot. I love the 80's, I loved the cheese, and honestly pretty much all the characters, like it felt realistic and I just wanted more interactioms. I just don't think it was quite up to scratch, and wish that we had more time with other characters too.
2) devil within me
I LOVED this game. It genuinely made me actually tense for the entire time, and got me so scared. And oh man I loved the mystery and being rewarded for actually paying attention to the secrets, and didn't feel like it was so obvious and that the characters were stupid for not catching up
1) Until Dawn
I mean how could you not?? It defined the genre, and I was obsessed when it first came out. Unfortunately it doesn't really scare me anymore because I've played it so much lmao. Don't love the characters as much but I think it works for these characters (and I love the stupid cheesy dialogue)
If you finished house of ashes, what would your new ranking be
I have a lot of problems with the Quarry from a story perspective compared to Until Dawn that just brought the game down for me.
@@GeekZone210 thats YOUR interpretation, lookat anyone who plays the game and they immedietly assume they should leave on the boat
And I actually remember the characters! man of medan - easily the worst, endings were stupid when u fail to get the engine thing like why would u go bsck on the ship u were trying to escape??
the quarry- I didn't like the werewolves, hated most of the characters.
little hope- loved this game but the different timelines confused me but that's jusy bc I'm dumb
house of ashes- loved the story
the devil in me- I love that they used real serial killers
until dawn- THE GOAT. my favourite game to ever exist, loved the characters, the storyline, the twist.

2. House of Ashes - Eric is my boi, Salim and Jason are OTP
3. Quarry - nice try
4. Man of Medan - Conrad, Julia, the setting are the best parts of the game.
5. Little Hope - I kinda enjoyed that. I liked Daniel and Taylor a lot. I appreciate the reference to Silent Hill, but the final twist is so weak
6. House of Ashes was a totall surprise for me. As a Sucker for H.P. Lovecrafts novels and Sci fi horror, i was NOT expecting something like THAT to be a twist in the games plot. it was AMAZING

6) Man of Medan
5) Little Hope
4) The Quarry
3) The Devil In Me
2) Until Dawn
1) House of Ashes
Was looking for the comment where Until Dawn wasn’t #1 🙃
My personally ranking (from favorite to least favorite)
1) Until dawn - the golden standard, most immersive/interesting plot, best characters, the scariest monsters, and overall the most fun
2) The quarry - a nice return to formula, I liked the cheesy 80s B movie horror feel the game had, the characters were arguable the most entertaining out of all the SM games with the best quotes and jokes (they were a little bit cringe at times but i got over it) the werewolf design was meh but they were still scary enough and the characters being able to get infected was a nice addition to the game. I thought the game had the most variety of scenarios of all the SM games as well. So not as good as until dawn but a step in the right direction
3) House of ashes - the setpieces are what make the game honestly. Outside of Salim, the characters are either boring (Nick, Eric,) or insufferable (Rachel, jason). However, I loved the vampires and all the insane sequences you have whenever you come across them. I loved the underground alien city section. Not only was it a cool design, but also so eery and creepy. So overall, I liked the game for setpieces and creatures, not the characters
4) Man of medan - the plot twist is incredibly obvious from the opening prologue so I was never scared of any of the "creatures" in the game.
I’d switch little hope with man of Medan but THATS MY OPINION lol
That. Periodt
Don't shit on the cast that much
Did anyone else think that the lighting in the quarry was so bad, like you couldn't even see the monster when it appeared. SPOILERS OF THE QUARRY
Not to mention the transformation of the monster, I mean come on, if you are going to do a werewolf you need an amazing werewolf transformation. If American werewolf in London could do it back in the day, the quarry can do it even better.
I've been trying to watch gameplays but i cant see shit in any of them. The lighthing annoys me so much.
The lighting could've definitely been better, but the werewolf transformation was very cool
IMO the quarry is the best game here, but nice to see your opinion and your explanation for it
I definitely agree that Until Dawn and the Quarry are the untouchable top two but here is my ranking from best to worst!
1. Until Dawn
2. The Quarry
3. Little Hope
4.The Devil in me
5. Man of Medan
6. House of Ashes
I actually really liked little hope.
House of Ashes at last place is... interesting to say the least
Atleast House of Ashes is the most relateble natural human interaction with environtment and scarienest, then any other teeneger who's look more scripted, but still appreciated the experience
House of Ashes at last...hmmm.. a very rare list but I guess an opinion is an opinion.
Little Hope is absolutely underrated
For me:
6) Man of Medan (most forgettable imo, so slow and I didn’t care about any of the characters. I was also so confused throughout)
5) Devil in Me (Hate every character. Mark is fine but so boring and I couldn’t care enough about any of them to try and keep them alive. Too many bugs and I was so confused about the 50/50 keeping them alive because there were no hints than made sense. But I love the concept)
4) The Quarry (I only like Dylan as a character if I’m being honest, maybe Max and Laura a tad, but everyone else was so stereotypical. But I love the pacing, story and the gore)
3) House of Ashes (Love each of the characters and I love how it doesn’t take a million years to get to the horror element, great twist)
2) Little Hope (I really love this game. Scary and sad with the psychological horror element and I had the most fun playing it)
1) Until Dawn (I never get over how good it is)
I thought the twist in HoA was garbage.
The Quarry will be remembered as a much more divisive game while Until Dawn has cemented itself as a zeitgeist legend and trailblazer.
Great work.
My ranking (from best to worst):
1. Until Dawn
2. The Quarry
3. Little Hope
4. The Devil in Me
5. Man of Medan
6. House of Ashes
ooh, why did you not like house of ashes? I wasn't a fan of the setting, but I still think it was solid overall.
Having Man of Medan over House of ashes is crazy ngl
This is EXACTLY my ranking too!
1) Until Dawn first obviously
2) The Quarry second because I knew there will be werevolves the moment when the full moon appeared, but in Until Dawn wendigos were for me just unexpected and far more interesting, otherwise amazing story, characters etc.
3) Little Hope because of the plot twist ending and different time periods connected to each other
4) The Devil in Me because H. H. Holmes (games based on a true stories are amazing; I know that the other ones are based on true stories or at least real myths, but H. H. Holmes is so well known and interesting)
5) Man of Medan had one big downside; if you kill Conrad early, the game has just a few interesting parts
6) House of Ashes felt like an action game; games (and movies) about war and soldiers are not for me; and I don't like Ashley Tisdale...
Brooo i was legit thinking of the same thing! We had the same feelings for these games
Here is my ranking from worst to best:
Worst to best -
Little hope
House of ashes
Man of Medan
Devil in me
Quarry
Until Dawn
Man of Medan better than House of Ashes lol
House of ashes is the best game for me, not a typical horror slasher, good charakters and a nice story :)
The second is The devil in me. I love the SAW mechanic :)
My list.
1. Until Dawn (easily) gotta love the scary vibe like easily the darkest.
2. The devil in me. (The kills, the grim undertone, the true crime vibe)
3. House of ashes (LOVEE the pazuzu vibes in this one,
4. The quarry- definitely more campy, quite literally. Very lovable characters. Gameplay just lacked a little bit.
5. Little hope( eerie, more story based, a little slow)
6. Man of Medan- easily my least favorite, just losses itself amongst the others. Hated every character other than fliss
I love Conrad and fliss and made sure they hookup in my main playthrough
Until Dawn and House of Ashes are literally the only games in the entire series to have actual good writing from start to finish (I'd argue Salim and Jason have the best character development Supermassive has ever written for any of the games), no wonder they are both fan favourites so far.
For me:
6) Man of Medan
5) Little Hope
4) House of Ashes
3) The Quarry
2) The Devil in Me
1) Until Dawn (obviously)
same for me
My personal ranking:
Weird. The end wasn't bad though.
i'm a bit late to the party but happy spooky season to all who are either playing for the first time or playing the games again! my personal rankings are as follows:
1. until dawn
2. house of ashes
3. the quarry
4. the devil in me (not my favorite story/gameplay wise but definitely the scariest IMO and i appreciate the ways they tried to differentiate this installment with the different gameplay mechanics!)
5. little hope (i actually really loved the story/witch trials part of this game, but it definitely feels like Walking Simulator at times, especially if you're achievement hunting)
6. man of median (nothing aginst it, just very low replay value IMO!)
Little Hope really gives a Silent Hill vibe
Untill dawn got me back into these type of games and love playing these games currently trying to get all the trophies on them
1. Until Dawn - all characters are balanced like at first you can't see the main character
2. House of Ashes - The plot of enemies to friends is just great
3. The Devil in Me - I just love that the plot is like Saw
4. The Quarry - I love the Characters but there's just some missed parts like Emma's bracelet being nonsense, Kaitlyn not shooting most of the time, Jacob not screaming while in the bush, and the ending is rushed, and why most of them always die at QTE
5. Little Hope - I love the plot but the ending... It just feels like you are saving them for nothing
@@derrickhorton1264 yeah I love the twist if it's a movie but if it's a game, it just feels like saving them for nothing
@@robertrotz4808 that bracelet didn't helped him that time when he get bit or when he died because of Werewolf Nick
When I was younger Until Dawn scared me so bad I genuinely stopped playing. Super glad I replayed it
Not good.
THE HOUSE OF ASHES ONE IS ME PLS 😭
Love the fact David Arquette plays a bumbling Sheriff in the Quarry, I legit smiled when the music briefly tips its hat to Scream too thats genius x
He doesn’t play a Sheriff
@@Whydontijustusespotify123 a deputy then.
My personal rank scary and "scary" Supermassive Games:
1. The Quarry
2. Until Dawn
3. House of Ashes
4. Little Hope
5. Man of Medan
6. The Devil In Me
I think my list would look like this:
My ranking:
1. until dawn: blend of good but still stereotypical character teens surrounded by a good story and a great threat that is the wendigo. Ps if I spelled wendigo wrong I’m sorry
2. Man of Medan: I liked the characters and the story was smaller and shorter which made it more bite sized than until dawn but the threat of the story should have just been literal ghosts instead of chemicals
This one could switch with the quarry or man of Medan any time so yeah it’s pretty good
5. Little hope: the twist was cool but it kinda took away from all this lore it built up and it flipped all of it upside down, however I did like the twist, it’s just I don’t think the twist was worth it for the rest of the game
I haven’t played the devil in me yet but it looks kinda dog shit so I don’t know if I even want to play it
imo:
1. until dawn. a literal video game classic at this point.
2. the quarry. imo, the characters in the quarry are the best in any supermassive game. most of them feel very fleshed out and like real people. it's like they took the characters from UD (which are still great, dont get me wrong) but expanded their personalities so they weren't just horror stereotypes.
3. house of ashes. the best game in the DPA and quite easily. the premise is the most interesting to me, Jason has the best character development out of ANY supermassive game and they actually pulled off a twist that didn't end up ruining the game lmao.
4. little hope. maybe this is unpopular, but I love little hope.
My personal ranking:
1. Until Dawn
2. The Devil In Me
3. Little Hope
4. House Of Ashes
5. The Quarry
6. The Casting Of Frank Stone
7. Man of Medan
I think the Quarry is the best story of them all really underrated I think
I really enjoyed Little Hope for what it was, and it did a good job with the twist
Every Supermassive Games feels like you're actually watching a movie, while playing the game. Wished they made more or more chapters would be nice.
1] Until Dawn - The GOAT
2] The Quarry - Cast was incredible
3] House Of Ashes - Would love to see more Lovecraftian themes in DPA
4] Devil In Me - Just a tad predictable, but loved the overall concept
5] Man of Medan - I liked the characters lol
6] Little Hope - Utter disappointment, seemed like it got schedule crunched out and would have been better with another year in dev
@@edwaaard46 exactly, I see LH’s potential, it’s a shame.
@@ANTONIOCARLOS-uv5dw Yeah that’s a good point I didn’t think about.
Heavy rain destroys all these games and is on another level for me.
House of Ashes is my personal favourite, the setting of the game and action was awesome while actually having monsters, only one I haven’t played is Devil in me
my ranking (pretty long comment so bear with me):
ALSO SPOILER WARNING
5. man of medan & little hope - i don't hate either of these games but i can see why they received a negative response. the most tense part of man of medan was pretty early (conrad trying to escape on the boat), and the fact that all the supernatural stuff they saw was an illusion felt quite underwhelming. with little hope, i appreciate the exploration of grief and the ending is honestly really sad but this game also just wasn't what people expected, and i don't like how unclear they were about how much personality traits mattered. i like how they delved into the salem witch trials, though given the ending it feels a bit pointless now. the only character i felt really attached to was andrew / anthony, although angela had some funny lines.
4. the quarry - it's a nice game overall, and i really like dylan and laura as characters. the graphics are really impressive and the scene with the crane in the junkyard is honestly my fave, it's really cool. the cast did a really good job as well, although i have to say some of the dialogue they were given was pretty cringey lol (not all of it tho, there were some funny moments too). the main thing that let this game down for me is the ending. it felt so abrupt and characters were separated and there wasn't a final boss battle or anything. dylan and ryan had a cool dynamic but they were just separated and never reunited again so their relationship felt unfinished to me. jacob was also a character i was expecting to have some sort of character arc / development (kind of expected him to be like the mike or jason of the game) but he kind of just stayed the same which was a bit disappointing.
3. the devil in me - some parts of this game were goofy and there were a lot of bugs, but i still think it's a good installment for tdpa. having a human killer creates an opportunity for some of the coolest deaths and scariest moments: characters aren't just mauled to death in seconds but rather have to anticipate a slow, agonising death whilst begging for their lives. i also like all the new game functions they added (like characters having their own inventories, jumping, climbing, etc). some really nice acting as well, for kate and charlie in particular.
2. house of ashes - i know this game had a mixed response but i honestly love it. it has some of the best action sequences from supermassive and imo the ending is their best yet (character arcs are complete, all lore is explained, all characters are reunited if alive and it has the right amount of tension to feel satisfying, plus an interrogation scene at the end). some people say the characters were a weakness of the game and tbh i can see why they would think that for eric, rachel, and nick but honestly i think jason and salim are some of the coolest characters from supermassive. salim is all around great and a character you really want to save and jason, although annoying at first, has some great development and some layers to him as well.
1. until dawn - still iconic, the story is campy but still really well executed. some great one-liners (i.e.
You have to understand we are talking about how much the story branches out and in my opinion The Quarry doesn’t branch out as much as others.
my ranking would be (i haven't played the devil in me yet)
1.until dawn; a classic, the plot twist were amazing as the "killers" weren't really the antagonists of the story, the characters are on another level and the jumpscare were so freaking scary. the butterfly effect makes so sense, i literally loved the fact that an event occurred a year ago was the main reason for what happened in the game.
house of ashes; hoa is a more adventure like horror, it doesn't have many jumpscares, but the game manages to be scary and mysterious even without being extremely sinister. it's a unusual horror, and it reminds me of invasion of the body snatchers, one of my favourite films. also the characters were amazing, with the eric-nick-rachel triangle, salim and jason and they were not flat
3.little hope; many people don't love it for the final plot twist, but i like it for that as well.
tha story was amazing, the witch trials make me shit in my pants, but you know what is also scary? those fucking jumpscares with the little kid, those were.
Until Dawn is number 1.
I haven’t played The Devil In Me yet but these are my rankings so far:
5. Little Hope
4. House of Ashes
3. The Quarry
2. Man of Medan
1. Until Dawn
Dang I've only played until dawn and man of medan so far but ik nothing beats until dawn
Man of Medan is a little slow to start but it has the best phenomenon imo of all the dark picture games once you get to the "ghost ship".
just finished the first run through of the quarry. i liked it, and like this genre/type of game. have just bought the anthology as well, but I'm waiting for the PS5 remaster of Until Dawn before i get it
I loved devil in me. The mannequins made it so damn chilling
I just finshed all of the Supermassive games you featured in this video. Overall you summed up everything very well. Great video.
The quarry has a better story then Until Dawn? Nah man
personally i enjoyed the quarry the most, while until dawn was definitely scarier the gameplay was very eh. Replaying it for the trophies felt more annoying and like a chore, while with the quarry it was really fun seeing all the different endings, and somehow the gameplay was better... even though its pretty much the same.
My list (ranking it story wise, to keep it simple):
Worst: Little Hope - concept is cool, atmosphere is great, but characters are not only bland, but annoying to watch. Nothing special about the story besides witch trial sections
Slightly better: House of Ashes - characters were insanely bland, tho Salim was cool, but the story is mostly just copy paste shooting sequences with unintimidating monsters
Alright: Man Of Medan - characters dynamics were interesting, even if the characters don't have too much depth. Story has a lot of creative ideas, and it branches a ton, but the short length and abrupt ending really drag the game down
Pretty good: The Devil In Me - characters have a ton of influence on each other, they're also well developed, with well defined personality traits that make them likeable. Story has a lot of interesting moments, tho kinda cliched. The game falls apart in the last 2 hours, it almost forgets it has a story. It just makes you walk as a character for 30 minutes, and pastes a du'met chase scene, and repeats that formula
Very good: Until Dawn, most interesting ideas and story in any of the games, but the story barely branches, and characters, while likeable, aren't really memorable
Great: The Quarry, best characters, and while the scenarios aren't as cool as Until Dawn, it's still way more fun to watch, although the anti climactic ending and character irrelevance weigh it down
I MOSTLY agree with this list, but I would switch house of ashes and the devil in me.
@@TheDisturbingPanda when you say the best acting I just think of the phrase "A cleaner turd is still a turd". 🤣
