i feel like they removed the scene of sam looking for hannah so that she would be more "deserving" of josh's torture. it emphasizes that she knew about the prank and did nothing to stop it or help hannah afterwards. it did feel kinda weird that sam was tortured in the 2015 version despite being pretty much innocent in the prank.

The main question was in the original and in this version aswell for me: Why did Josh decide to torture Chris, Sam and Ash aka the 3 person who had the least part in the prank?. I mean Chris and Josh was wasted when everything happened and in the story (ateast in the remake) we get to know that Chris was innocent (when they find the projector) and from what Beth said I think it was Josh's idea to drink. You are right with the fact that Sam did not warn Hannah but she didn't participate in the prank. I think off sreen she realised that the prank was too much and started to search for Hannah but it was too late. In Ash's case: she joined the others in the prank but didn't have a big part, she just hid in the closet. So all together why these three? If he dediced to do this with Mike, Em and Jess, then I would say nothing but they were sent away from the events and got away 'scratch free'.

    • @teowachowski1143

Nah it wasnt weird, she was targeted because of that. IMO Josh was acting out his worst self desteuctive tendencies by punishing his best friends and by extension himself. Both Sam and Chris weren't directly related to the prank, but they were closest to Josh

@@kristofnagy8950because he was self destructive and ultimately blaming himself. He was passed out during the prank and couldn't help, both Sam and Chris didnt take part in the prank but they couldnt stop it either. I feel like the gang scribbling on Chris' face is actually really important, because it establishes that these friends have ranked each other before, and Beth's reaction when she sees Chris isn't negative, showing that in general they probably view the pranks as lighthearted fun. It puts the big prank in a little more context and shows how easily they could have gone too far because they already prank each other a lot

I played the remake, and to me, it seems that Jessica was the one who came up with the idea of the prank, her scene spying on Hannah, then alerting Emily and then coming up with a "plan" to look out for her "girl" (ironic since she will eventually steal her man anyway)

The scene with Ashley opening the door could have been a three-way outcome, like how Jessica's is with Mike. If you remember, if your relationship with Jess is incredibly high, she is fiesty and willing to "make out" with you. If it's medium, she is reluctant and just takes her jacket off but eventually makes out with you. If it's low, she insults you, keeps all of her clothes on, and gives you a pity cuddle.
In this remake, Ashley could have worked the same. If your relationship with her, as Chris, was high, she lets you in. If you try to shoot her, she hesitates but tries to save you, as long as your relationship up to that point is high. If your relationship was already low AND you try to shoot her, she lets you die.

    • @danisland
      @danisland  2 месяца назад +98

      @@malcolmmilk i agree! that’s an AWESOME idea!
another thought: a lot of controversy originally stemmed from the fact that if you point the gun at yourself initially as Chris, Ashley BEGS you to shoot her instead. then, if you do, it’s the same result as if she plead for you not to.
i’ve seen some people suggest it would’ve been cool if they kept the original scene for if you try to shoot her outright, but instead have this new scene for if she begs you to shoot her first-I feel like she’d be a LOT more conflicted in that sort of situation so this response would make sense!!!!!

Part of me thought it would be interesting if they changed it from her being there and not opening if you shot her, to her simply just going to the basement and not coming to check on him. No ones there to let him in, so they assume quickly Chris and the stranger didn’t make it back.

    • @Inblader
      @Inblader 2 месяца назад +27

It's pretty simple. Josh only targeted the ones he cared the most about, Chris and Sam, Chris being his bro and Sam his crush (and also his sister's best friend). Sure he targeted Ashley but she was "collateral damage" for Chris, proving again that he never was acting out of revenge, though it does seem very cathartic to him to confront Ashley about the prank, probably to trigger reactions. As for Sam he was testing her, assuming they got closer after the tragic event about his sisters, it makes sense that he'd "knew" what could potentially make her react: his own death. That's what a psychotic behavior is.
He also makes sure to get the rest of the group as far away as possible, by stealing Emily's bag and by sending Mike and Jessica in the cabin.
The new intro just confirms that Sam knew about the prank all along and did nothing until it was too late, it was the same in the original but more confusing. Sam being a pacifist is a trait the remake wanted to emphasize a bit more.
In the end you realize Josh only acted out of good intentions, in his own twisted ways, to help one friend and out of "love" for the other one.

The original Devs from Supermassive stated years ago that Ashley's reaction to not opening the door for Chris if he shot her is because of a culmination of all the horrific traumatic things she'd gone through over the night. She was so scared she couldn't move. It was NOT because she was being vindictive to Chris for shooting her. Case in point: If, in the OG game Chris shoots her but you lose the QTES to get back to the door and get caught by the creature, Chris's head rolls over to the door and Ashley will see it and break down in tears before needing to be lead away from the door by Mike again due to the culmination of everything she's been through over the course of the night.
The change Ballistic Moon made in the remake is in my opinion much better. Ashley is further from the door, pacing and lost in thought because of all the events she's been through in the night. She doesn't open the door because she's still in this new version wrapped up in her own trauma preventing her from both hearing Chris at the door, and reaching it in time to save his life. Which better conveys in line with Supermassive's original intention of the scene: she was a traumatized teenage girl, not a vindictive, petty psycho bitch like the fandom like to portray her as for 9 years. Even the trophy names changes from Ashley Snaps and Nightmare on Ash Street, to better convey the story that was originally intended to be told with those scenes.

Yeah, unfortunately with the character model limitations, she doesn’t come across as freezing from him banging on the door but instead comes across as seeing him and walking away
The remake is definitely better in that regard. If they had her flinch or cover her ears when he arrived then maybe the original intent could have been portrayed as well

    • @Xelltrix
      @Xelltrix 2 месяца назад +15

Definitely much better. Ashley in the original was made into a very bad person out of nowhere , making her vindictive and awful. Changing it makes her actions much more understandable.
I also wish they would have changed it so that she doesn't lock him out if she begs him to shoot her instead, though I guess, since she isn't opening the door due to freezing up this time rather than out of vengence it's more acceptable that she still wouldn't do anything in time.
Definitely a good change, now I can like Ashley's character a lot more and I think it jells with what they wanted to convey her as in the first place. She was completely cold and uncaring after killing him in the original but she's upset in the remake and we know she's bad under pressure so that makes more sense.

A clarification on the Sam in the prologue point. Sam looking for Hannah in the original was strange to me, as it doesnt make too much sense how she doesnt find her or cross paths, particularly since she could have just waited near the guestroom for Hannah to turn up. But more importantly it adds a small flaw to an otherwise flawless character, Sam failing to intervene with Hannah in time lead to the events a year later. Something that maybe stays with her.

The remake made it more obvious that Jessica was the one to instigate the prank, not Emily. It was in the original but quickly forgotten, leading most people to just hate Emily. Furthermore, the remake does have Sam search for Hannah, we just don't see it directly. When she barges into the room, it's obvious that she was searching for Hannah.
However I do like that you clarify that the Josh lives ending is as a full human. The VR sequel has its endings impacting his fate thus sealing it. So technically, it's not done if he doesn't die at Hannah's hands. I like how it doesn't comtradict that game and lives alongside the Wendigo Josh ending. It only changed how soon he's found!

Jessica: "Im just looking out for my girl Em." this 100% leads me to believe that while Emily was supposed to be the beneficiary of the prank, it was only done in her honor by Jessica. which would explain why in the post prank part of the game emily and jessica seemed to be intentionally distancing themselves from each other at best and actively hostile at worst. because if my supposed best friend pulled a prank in my honor and it lead to the death of a person id be pretty pissed at them for making me a murderer by proxxy. and jessica on the other hand would feel betrayed by emily seemingly shirking the blame on a prank she seemingly went along with and letting her take the whole fall for it. it all fit so perfectly. and then the remake changed it. so now emily is just kinda left being awful without any room for ambiguity or complex character building

I figured the ending Sam Epilogue was her cutting herself with a “J” for Josh. They teased a bit of a romance arc when she’s talking about how close they had gotten after Beth and Hannah went missing. Josh would always confide in her, she stated.
I think this would be an AMAZING tease in to another game. I agree that it does sound like Dr Hill calling out for Sam in the epilogue. Originally I thought it was Josh whispering to her as if he wanted her to join him. Either in death or as a wendigo as well. But I like the idea of it being Dr Hill instead for a few reasons. One, it could show that Sam either knew about, or had met, the real Dr Hill when Josh was seeing him. That would show how close Sam and Josh really had been. However, it would also be interesting if it’s showing how SHE is also going a bit mental after all that time. She looks to be self medicating with the empty pill bottles and possible cutting. She also looks like she’s driving herself a little crazy with the possible obsession over myths and legends with the book on the nightstand. Maybe her descent into her own madness manifests into Dr Hill again, like it had done for Josh.
Not sure how another game would go as far as storyline. But maybe Sam finds her own myth to have latch on to her. Though the game developers seem particularly fixated on Wendigos, considering how The Quarry also goes that route. Or, Sam is trying to find a cure for Josh who ended up a wendigo, and that is the canon ending to tie into this idea of a sequel. Maybe she finds another spot that has them rumored to be around and integrated with another group of people also trying to figure it all out. Would be interesting to mix the groups from her origin and The Quarry people. Food for thought.

He steals her clothes, knocks her out, chases her, terrifies her, ties her up, he can literally drug her. And people want more of them? No.

I also noticed they make it where Jessica says something new after she scares Mike with the deer head after she goes missing, but it feels half assed, since it sounds a little unnatural with the other dialogue from the original game. I really wish they redone Emily and Jessica’s fight, because I really dislike how they dance around why they are mad at each other; Mike dating Jessica not long after the break up with Emily, when only a year ago she was on Emily’s side with the prank and lead to what happened. Also don’t get why it’s all slut this, whore that, or why Emily says, “Are you trying to swallow his face whole?” When they aren’t even kissing.
    I think I have a better scenario:
Everyone is in the lodge, except Emily. Mike and Jessica kiss right as Emily enters. Emily then says, “Oh wow, loving having my leftovers huh?” Jessica whips her head back at Emily with a nasty glare. “At least I’m not some prudish hag!” Jessica quips back. Emily moves in closer and Jessica stands up, Mike trying to pull her back. “Jess, don’t!” Jessica scoffs. “What? I’m just defending myself…I don’t need other to fight my battles!” Emily rolls her eyes and laughs. “Yeah right, your nothing but a scared little whore!” Jessica and Emily go at each other and both Mike and Matt hold them back (unless Emily is seen hugging Mike by Matt, he’ll let her go at Jessica, who is pulled away by Mike and he stands between them). Josh tells them to knock it off and tells Jessica and Mike that the cabin might need some work to be in working condition for them and they should go ahead. Emily then quips, “Out to the stable with you, heifer!” And as they leave, Jessica quips again, “Anywhere without that crackhead!” Which makes Emily growl.
Maybe not as good as I want it to be either, but something that would tell the audience why they are no longer friends and why Emily comes in all hostile. I also wish Emily and Jessica meet in the mines and trying to escape a wendigo in mines, if Emily helps Jessica, Jessica can stop Emily from being bite, but if she doesn’t, she gets bite. I also wish Matt got a little section in the caves too.

Actually the developers already confirmed otherwise. That's why the trophy for shooting her is called "fatal grudge", she treats him coldly afterwards after he shoots her, and the description for "ashley snaps" the trophy for her not letting him in is she "let him die." Also Ashley is dismissive of his death. The intention was she wanted him dead, hence why she walks to the door and reaches toward the knob, then walks back farther from Chris, all the while looking at him with a stone cold face even as he dies. If Chris dies and does not make it to the lodge, she says "I'm sorry", an apology for what she was about to do, before walking away, clearly not that affected by it, as opposed to the other version where she has to be helped up and pulled away by Mike.

Not to mention the old game runs better than the remake. However I'm still excited for the sequel that the epilogue is setting up. Supposedly the sequel is being done by Firesprite and Sam will be the main female character. The voice is absolutely Dr. Hill as the actor pretty much confirmed he will be in the sequel in one of his post on Instagram. The remake adding a possible romantic connection between Sam and Mike does seem interesting as its possible that Firesprite plans for them to be a couple in the sequel. Sam always seemed like the main female lead and Mike the main male lead of the first game. All the times she said she spoke to him after the incident did it never come up like hey I'm sorry we let the prank get out of hand. I didn't agree with it and should have done more to stop it. The only one who even seems to think along those lines was Ashley of all people

Making Ashley try to open the door is almost as terrible as making Han shoot second in Star Wars.

That epilogue with Sam was the most interesting to me. I'm assuming they're hinting at some type of a sequel where she'll be the main focal point of the story, which will be even more interesting if Josh is alive. She seems to (understandably) struggle with mental health issues after everything that went down given the meds next to her (and was the scar on her forearm meant to indicate an overdose attempt?). And I think she particularly struggled to cope with everything that happened to Josh (she probably assumed he died even if he actually survived) since at some point she tells the police she "thought they had a connection" and that he would often confide in her. Anyway, excited to see that there might be a new game centered around her, she's probably my fav UD character.

the game devs have said before specifically that ashley was NOT being vengeful by not opening the door in the original, she was traumatized by the events of the night including her crush pointing a gun at her and pulling the trigger, and froze up. please don't spread misinformation that's been debunked plenty of times

    • @danisland
      @danisland  2 месяца назад +3

i personally always interpreted Ash’s initial reaction as a trauma response as well! but a lot of the community didn’t see it that way.
my point there was just that in the remake, i think it’s a LOT harder to interpret that scene as her being vengeful. to me it seems like the creators made this change so that it’d be way harder for people to interpret her reaction as deliberate malice, thus less people would see her as “secretly a bad person” - that’s what I was trying to get at there 😌

I can't be the only one that originally thought that Sam was calling Hannah to lure her into the prank? Looking back, it doesn't make sense considering that Hannah was given the letter and also assumed that she was alone with Mike. But I honestly never realized that Sam was trying to warn Hannah before watching this video. It always stuck me as odd that Sam would participate in the prank lol.

Adding more actual content to this remake was a genius, although obvious move. If it didn't have more endings, scenes or at least more dialogue, then there'd be no point in "remaking" a PS4 game that's still totally playable by today's standards.

FINALLY someone agrees. I never understood the people who ship Sam x Josh. He literally drugs her, ties her up, steals her clothes, stalks and tortures and terrifies her. Just because Sam says "I thought we had a connection" people think AW so romantic and sad. No. I see it as a friendly thing, she was there for him as friends. Sure I do think Josh liked Sam romantically but I can't see Sam liking him back after everything he put her through. Mike saves Sam, Sam saves Mike, if Mike sees Jess's head (If you killed her) She'll grab his arm to guide him through the door, she spends half of chapter 9 trying to find and warn Mike, even telling the others "I've got to get Mike, with you or without you" and if Mike dies in the lodge she blames herself, confessing, "He saved me". Also if Sam doesn't lock the door against the Wendigos OR follows Mike, he runs back to her to get her away, saving her. Def a better fan than Sam and Josh. I'm glad they added the flirty line.

To get the Josh living ending there are 2 main factors needed:
-First you have to choose you're sorry in the final Dr Hill scene
-Then by the time you find him with Sam and Mike ALL characters must be alive. If he sees anyone's body other than the flamethrower guy hanging in the cave he won't be able to forgive himself and will give in to the wendigo spirit. Doesn't matter if any characters die after that scene though

Nah I ship and see it personally. At the end of the game (Forgot if it was the remake or OG, its one of them) Her relationship bar with him is FULL. (If they're both alive at the end), he saves her over and over and she saves him. She even comments saying "And he saved me... so its my fault that he died," How did she dislike him after the prank? He didn't do anything to Hannah btw, blame Jess for that. Sam never implied hatred toward Mike. She even spends majority of chapter 9 trying to find Mike to warn him. Even telling the others "I have to get Mike... With or without you" so no yeah, she does not "doesn't really like Mike"

Idea for an Until dawn 2. Sam goes back to lodge area to figure out what that curse scar is and to make sure there are no more Wendigos. So she finds the dead flamethrower guy and takes his stuff. But later she finds a group of people who decided to go to the mountain(this is so you can keep like until dawn and have different endings) and now Josh will be replaced with sam in the Dr. Hill scenes

By letting her have this reaction shows how your choices matter you choose to shoot her as Chris so she chooses to let Chris die...
Chris didn't know they were blanks he was choosing to kill her! She chooses to do the same...
Maybe if she hesitates to open it. It would have been better but having her just react as if nothing happened. Kinda weak

So I actually really like a lot of the re-worked prologue, but I think its better that the prank doesn't have a ringleader, so that everyone can feel equally guilty. If it's all on Emily, then it would make more sense for the others in their guilt, to cut her off as a friend, or at the very least, say it was her idea when explaining it to Josh- Who would then make her the main focus of his revenge, (kind of like how he isolates Jess and Mike because he's got plans for them later). But instead his main targets are Chris and Ashley for some reason, while Emily is in peril more out of happenstance, than Josh's mechanations.
And on the topic of Chris and Ashley, I dislike the Ashley change because her heel turn is a long game consequence from your choice, and for gameplay there should be MORE of that, not less! Besides, her hidden dark side actually illuminates how someone so sweet would be in on a prank so cruel. Now it makes no sense she wasn't Team Sam when it came to humiliating Hannah.

  • @RemiFar

I don't think that Mike would really be into Sam that much, I think of it as more playful than any romance...this is a man who would run through a snow storm with a loaded rifle, without a coat and shoes, hopping over multiple obstacles, running faster than he probably ever had before, just to save Jessica, his girlfriend...that man is committed and loyal.

  • @Rikrobat

Not a fan of the change to Ashley intentionally not letting Chris in after he aims the gun at her. True, her decision to lock him out doesn’t make sense if Chris aims at her AFTER she pleads with him, but then just change the outcome there. Make it an aim first ending, more rare but also satisfying to play out.
As other commenters have said, it could have been a three-way branch as well. And yes, this change does still work for Ashley’s character-she’s troubled because of what Chris did but ultimately doesn’t want him killed. But it is disappointing that they removed the element of someone in the friend group having a dark side / snapping under the stress.

I have two things I think should have stayed true to the original, I think the prank should have been kept a group effort I mean you don't need more reason to hate Emily, feel free to disagree but I think Ashley keeping the door closed should stay something I liked about the game is that there's like one? Maybe two characters that aren't totally awful that don't die heh and it at first seemed like Ashley was one of the few that was decent until that moment, oh and even more reason to keep the prank a group effort if they had kept that it would make more sense for Sam to maybe not try too hard to fight back against the entire group if she only has to go against Emily that's one thing but going against everyone I could see that making her stay uninvolved.

The Until Dawn Remake is a Remake, which doesn't work for me.
Yes, we get more insights in Hannah and Beth and how Hannah turns.
Yes, we get an extra ending
    Yea, Ashley's character got redeemed.
But 90% of this remakes is still identical to the original version.
This remake was the opportunity to give characters like Jessica and Matt more screentime.
What were they doing in the mines?
How did Matt move in the mines?
I know that Jessica was unconscious in the original version and the remake version, if Mike is fast enough to see her.
I could forgive this decision in the original version, because the Devs originally intended to k*ll Jess off no matter how you play. The change to have the opportunity to save her came in a late state of development.
But the remake was the opportunity to give us more Jess content and to give us more Matt content... but their characters were cut short as well...
I really hoped for more desicions or even different ones and not the same playstyle and the same desicions from the original version.
