I think it’s nuts that Asobo Studios has been around since 2002. Granted, they came out with a lot of random franchise games like Monopoly but to see them make a huge jump to single-player action driven games with beautiful graphic engine is fantastic. Hope more companies follow suit because I love my narrative single player games.
I ended up giving the first game a try based on Jim Sterlling's opinion on it. Ended up loving it. Would have bought requiem no doubt. But getting on PC gamepass day 1 (and pre loading) was quite nice.
@@GuyWhoLikesTheSnarkies1435 Only a matter of time till Microsoft gobbles them up. They develop Flight Sim, Requiem is a day 1 Gamepass title, signs are there.
Between these two Requiem games and Flight Simulator 2020 Asobo have shown they deserve to be put up with the top AAA developers in the business today.
I had no issue reading the first comment, and I certainly have no issue with thinking independently. My comment was aimed at your stupid point about Sony first party studios being better than Microsoft. How is that even relevant when we are talking about a game made by an independent studio that is multi platform?
The game was great. I'm a big shooter and AAA story guy. But the writing and acting was great. And the different scenery and how well they were done was both distracting(wanting to look at everything) and engaging(wanting to look at everything). I can't really callback any issues I had with it. And the emotion of the game was very well conveyed thanks to great voice acting.
I started playing over the weekend, and the acting stood out. The VA and writing carries enough weight that, as a father of a 4 yo, there was at least one moment listening to Hugo cry out for help that I paused the game and took a moment to appreciate my little one sleeping safe and sound in our home.

I'm several hours in now and I've had to pick my jaw up off the floor dozens of times already. I can't wait for the RT update and anything Asobo does next.

@@phrozac true, I don't think I've heard of a recent game using parallax occlusion mapping in a widespread fashion. do they use it as their default way to fake additional geometry?
@@maximeteppe7627 Not sure if it's default, but I see it on almost every wall. It's well done, not subtle, and very convincing. There are times that I'm sure I'm seeing geometry but check anyway and sure enough, it's parallax mapping.
Asobo is and has always been great at making their games look way higher budget than they actually are. They're an extremely talented studio. I just wish the performance was better. This is the perfect use case for FSR 2 in a console game (Asobo has experience using it in Flight Simulator) but not only is it not offered on PC, but it's blocked if you try to mod it in using the usual CyberFSR mod. It seems weird that they would omit such a helpful feature that would improve performance a ton on consoles and PCs without RTX GPUs, but the large Nvidia logo that pops up when you boot the game up confirms why the game doesn't have it and blocks the mod that enables it.
Probably nvidia has proprietary code embedded in the game engine to prevent competitor's feature to be applied. I mean it happened in batman AA since 13 years ago.
Maybe I got lucky but I downloaded the latest 2.1.2 CyberFSR from Nexus Mods, dropped the DLLs into the right folder, ran EnableSignatureOverride and I've played through half the game with FSR 2 enabled. @@kishaloyb.7937 Except it might be memory bandwidth given how much transparency is used for the smoke and motion blur in scenes where it tanks the most. It remains to be seen how FSR 2.1 performs when on a unified memory system where there is contention with the CPU for the RAM.
A Plague Tale Requiem was an absolute joy to play. I beat the game twice, first playthrough on normal mode, second playthrough on new game+ which locks the difficulty to the highest one.

Amazing content as always guys. One thing I wished you would start focusing on is HDR presentation on all platforms especially PC since HDR can be hit or miss.
I think they don't cause it's hard to show on here realistically. HDR video on youtube on pc is a crap shoot. Plus, most people watching this on pc aren't using HDR so it would be wasted. It's the same thing with high frame rate, the underlying tech just isn't where it needs to be and it's a lot more work for little return. But I'm with you, I'd love to see more stuff related to HDR and high frame rates too.
@RUclips Account considering it's been the largest change to display technology in the last 8 years or so it's rather important. Nearly every large release has HDR so yes it does matter. If your rocking a 1080p or 1440p monitor it may not matter however a huge part of this audience is using 4K HDR on a TV with HDMI 2.1 or they wouldn't be covering the consoles at all.
Finally! I really was looking forward to seeing Requiem and I'm happy that the game turned out good. PT:I was a big hit, awesome that they managed to deliver. For newcomers - the first installment can be bought cheap these days, especially on various Steam sales. It's 100% worth playing, and it should be- Requiem is a direct sequel and it won't hit as hard as it would with knowledge and experience from playing Innocence. It's great, even OST alone is worth finishing that game - it's all capital letters ART.
@@YTMsux Talking about the game in general. Performance issues at launch are present in games made 2 people and made by 2000 people, and certainly will be smoothed out with post-launch patches. And I have no idea what 'locking to 30 fps is', I play only on PC, so can't relate.
@@YTMsux you don’t really think 60 fps is a next gen feature do you. The PS2 had a bunch of 60 fps games, and even the N64 had some 60 fps titles. Console gamers have historically not wanted that. We still see this today as people threw fits when Guardians of The Galaxy was ‘only’ 1080p 60 in performance mode, and even complaints when people found out Returnal was 1080p upscaled to 4K. Nevermind the incessant complaints that games ‘don’t look next gen’. These console are not magic. Engine upgrades and pushing visual fidelity will outpace the hardware. PC is already 2 generations ahead of consoles just 2 years in with the release of the 4000 series cards this month and RDNA3 showcases coming in a couple weeks. Not to mention the few 60 fps titles we got last gen were met with complaints that the devs should have used the horsepower for visuals instead. Even Digital Foundry had this complaint when Rage 2 chose to release at 1080p 60 on Pro and One X versions. While there are advancing techniques like FSR and DLSS and such, FSR 2.0 was recently made available to console devs and is why Dying Light 2 now runs at 4K 60 in Balanced Mode instead of the 1080p 60 at launch that people also complained about. So there is hope. But anyone expecting every game on console to hit 60 fps as we leave cross gen and get deeper into the gen is being unrealistic at best. These gamws are demanding even on high end PC’s and PC continues to be the place for performance if that is what you care about. I do hear you and everyone else though. I vastly prefer 60 fps, but to achieve it we’d need games to basically be held back at a visual level as 60 is really expensive to hit consistently. Plague Tale can probably hit 60 in some scenes but since it can’t all the time they went with 30, as is the norm. But at least they have a 40 fps option, which is a bigger difference than you’d think. I totally understand not wanting to go back to 30. But devs are going to get complaints no matter how they do it. Casuals only care about visuals and visuals sell, so while I don’t envy them, I am realistic that as cross gen is left behind we will see more 30 fps titles. And any that are 60 will either be noticably downgraded visually, or complaints will fly as to why don’t games look like a generational leap as we get further in. Can’t have both. It is hard to go back though for sure.
The inconsistency in framerate is just unbearable. If you compare it to games like Horizon Forbidden West and God of War, it should perform at that exact range. It looks good but it's terribly optimized.

Remember reading in gaming magazines about Normal Mapping? lol its been a while for sure, but I, for one, loved reading about advances in the tech. Thank you for considering!
Definitely a gorgeous looking game and great game overall. Can't wait for your PC analysis. I am curious as to what's causing the hitching/stutters in certain camera angles or movements, and the FPS drops at certain places/parts of the game even without much going on on-screen.
I'd guess it's related to asset streaming. If you use photo mode which lets you move the camera through walls and everything. You'll see the game loads areas in small chunks as you go through them. Just a guess though
Just superficial graphics, With no Substance you have blind deaf and dumb ai from two decades ago, linear gameplay. Fine for Kids I suppose, but there no depth or intelligent gameplay
The strange hiccups when moving the camera are actually caused when there are objects where the camera is. When it goes through objects it does that stutter. When you go anywhere in the open the hiccups are completely gone, at least on PC.

The fact that the XSS holds that 30fps comparable to the XSX is fantastic. Yes, the overall image quality is softer, but the image detail and fidelity is pretty much identical. For a £250 (or cheaper) console with game pass, this is still an incredible bargain for next gen gaming.

I was waiting for this video and now I'm really confused. I stopped playing the PS5 version because it's the game with worse framerate I played in recent years, but in your video you praise the performance. I have no problem playing at 30fps (I played in quality mode all PS5 games that allow that mode, except Demons Souls), but the 30fps in this game feels wrong, with constant hiccups or something similar to stuttering. I thought you would demolish the game regarding the framerate and that would put more pressure in Asobo to address the erratic framerate, but now with your benevolent review I feel lost. Am I the only one feeling the 30fps in this game feels broken?
Everytime that PS5 has a worst performance in Digital Foundry reviews, they usually minimize how worst is in comparison, as well as offering excuses: we hope it gets patched, becaue we don't usually see much diference in multiplatform games... Also, in all the recent reviews they avoid to compare directly the framerate side by side between platforms. They usually show different scenes or just don't compare the same scene side by side as they use to do... I wonder why.
Foreal did you see all that screen tearing?? It’s hardly even holding 30. Ya when the screen is tearing everywhere it’s “a good showcase of performance” NOT the game runs like dogshit

@O N A lot of things are really, even on PC if the whole DLSS and FSR is any indication. I guess achieving higher resolution has plateu and we just want good games with good fake resolutions that is indistinguishable from the real thing these days, and I am okay with that. Too many devs focus on the wrong things at times. We will like to see some experimentation with the current hardware limitation, so we expect some interesting results next year.
I have both the PS5 and Series X, but the deciding factor for me in getting the game for the PS5 was hearing how excited the developers were in working with the haptic feedback features of the PS5. Having played the original game, I could very much see how haptic feedback could really enhance the experience. Also, really excited to hear the game is way up there in the sales charts. I'm glad people have discovered the franchise. The original was an absolute masterpiece and hidden gem. I'll be waiting for a third installment.

I think there is a lot Asobo can do to improve the frame rate. Reduce some settings, less rats and maybe add some fsr and run the game at 1080p on the ps5 and series x. Maybe even add some dynamic res. The cpu's on these consoles are decent this generation not like last generation so I don't see no excuse as to why they couldn't. Meh it's just the relatively low budget and lack of experience of the studio. RDR2 ran on at 30fps on a 1.31 tflop machine. and looked absolutely breathtaking. Sure, the resolution is significantly upped here (1440p), but the game itself is just great looking, not revolutionary like RDR2 was in 2018. There's plenty more power in those consoles, but most likely only larger studios will be able to fully use it.
Funny how Series S runs this just fine with well balanced compromises when at the same time some devs trying to convince people that the whole game industry is dragged behind because of it.
It's memory constrained and makes significant compromises on every title this early in the generation. I have a feeling it might lose dev support for more ambitious titles.

It is a beautiful game. It would be nice if they could drop it to 1080p on series x/ps5 to achieve 60fps and checkerboard it up to 1440p or something. Obviously I’m not a dev or anything so I’m sure it’s much easier said than done. Still, great work by the dev team and DF for this video
I don't think resolution or GPUs are at the culprit here, the game seems to be dropping when there's a lot on screen, that indicates CPU bottleneck, probably the game engine is the same used on last gen which was very CPU constrained and it's not using XSX/PS5 CPUs to full potential. The same is happening with Arkham Knights. Game engines will need serious overhaul to be more CPU bound this gen as last gen there was very little to work with so GPUs we're the workhorses.
I think it’s nuts that Asobo Studios has been around since 2002. Granted, they came out with a lot of random franchise games like Monopoly but to see them make a huge jump to single-player action driven games with beautiful graphic engine is fantastic.
FSR 2.1 probably wouldn't help much here if the cpu is the bottleneck.
@@paul1979uk2000 except CPU is not the bottleneck here. It's all GPU bottleneck, so yes, FSR 2.1 in this game will help both PC and the consoles.

If "locked to 30fps" and stutters during camera motion is "good", then sure.

He is right about the series s version but people have to understand that from my experience, the series s isn’t really meant to be a home console for 4k resolution. I believe it was designed more as a budget/travel console. The Series S combine with a small 15 to 17 inch 1080p monitor and you got yourself a really cool compact gaming setup.
Nah S runs native 900p. Im on a 1080p monitor and use the X because the difference is very noticable.
@@kaarthuisplus Dang, good luck hauling that chunky boy Series X with you in a back pack with that monitor. didn’t say that series S was perfect but for portability it’s definitely a lot more practical.

XSX is showing why it is the most powerful machine ever made!
It’s literally 300 thousand rats in exchange for 30 fps lmao. We don’t need 300 thousand rats spawning in. Tragic in terms of performance.
1080p@60fps is the only thing I ask for, is not too much, is?
The Colloseum part is just brutal for any hardware, even on a RTX 3080 I saw dips under 60fps (god bless VRR though) there at 1440p native. Though it's mostly taxing the processor. This is a true "next gen" (current) game so don't expect all of these to have a 60fps mode, we are slowly moving past the cross gen era console people.
I see console players seething about the 60 fps, but seriously what did people expect after cross-gen ended? They point to the last of us part 1 and demon souls as some sort of “gotcha!” But those games have very linear ps3 era level design. You can’t have everything unless you have enough money to get a high end pc. Never been any different in any gen.

I wonder if the XSX could hit 60fps at 1080p if the option existed? This game and games like it is acceptable at 30 fps. The problem comes from games like Gotham Knights which is basically a fighting game and really needs frame rate over visuals.
I’m a few hours in playing on ps5 at 40fps. But sadly I think I’ll have to stop and wait for a few updates, the first encounter with guards and rats is just running very poorly for me and I’d rather enjoy the game and not let that annoyance hurt the experience.

I'd take a 1080p or even 900p mode on series x if it means 60fps. I played the first chapter and stopped because 30fps just isn't a enjoyable experience for me... especially after playing the first game at 60.
Yeah, I'll consider it if it's boosted to 60 on a PS5 Pro or whatever the next one is called...
Remember when series s was promised as the 1440p machine? Now it struggles with 900p and the expensive consoles have to use 1440p.
How is it possible that this game looks so good on PC and bigger consoles, when Series S holds this whole generation back, apparently? 🤔
Its a crime not to give 60fps option in 2022

I could swear that this game has Dynamic resolution on Series S maybe between 1080-900p the first chapter/slower scenes look very Sharp when you have a lot of enemies, particle effects, rats you can notice the resolution drop
Its because in slow scenes upsampling works better.
@O N have you seen the vídeo, they just Said is 900p!
When can we expect to see a review and settings guide for the PC version, hopefully by Alex Battaglia? I was also hoping he could reach out to Asobo and ask if a PC performance patch is coming, which is sorely needed.
Alex will not be doing a video on this game until they patch in the ray tracing modes. It's what they said in the podcast.
That 40 fps mode really had me fooled! I thought the game was running at 60-50 frames.

Requiem is without no doubt, the best game i've played this year. Amazingly heartbreaking story, intense gameplay, dan phenomenal graphics. But i promise you'll soon forget about it and get immersed by the story and incredible voice acting.
Very Heartbreaking :(
It's always a trade off, greater graphic fidelity or frames
Meh it's just the relatively low budget and lack of experience of the studio. RDR2 ran on at 30fps on a 1.31 tflop machine. and looked absolutely breathtaking. Sure, the resolution is significantly upped here (1440p), but the game itself is just great looking, not revolutionary like RDR2 was in 2018. There's plenty more power in those consoles, but most likely only larger studios will be able to fully use it.

Funny how Series S runs this just fine with well balanced compromises when at the same time some devs trying to convince people that the whole game industry is dragged behind because of it.
It does.

Agree, I will take 1080p for 60fps over 4K any day.
