  • Looking for a vintage Speedmaster? Good Choice! But what do you look for? What are the variations, the costs, the pitfalls?
    Where do you start?
    Here!
    A breakdown of the six most likely candidates for a vintage speedmaster purchase. This is a brief overview not indepth, so if you want to know more, let me know what you want me to highlight in future videos.
    While there are 38 executions of the vintage speedmaster up to 1978 we can simplify the quest by highlighting the most common six references that you are likely to come accross.
    Reference Table showing 38 executions:

    Price Chart:

    Wow, this is such great information. I've been wearing a 3570.50 from 2008 and I love it. But I'm wanting to go deeper down the rabbit hole and go vintage. I appreciate you sharing your knowledge. Thanks.

    ‘Rolex Refugee’ what a great term 😂
    Thanks for another valuable video William. I would have to say that for a newbie to the vintage Speedy game, I’d recommend the 70’s references. More accessible, newer and easier to find a nice example. Just my view.

    A proper 145.022-69. Great looks with the stepped dial, Not overly expensive to buy, less expensive and "easier" to service than a 321 and still with the "pre moon" aura.

    Thank for again brilliant information. The only Speedmaster I own is a 105.012-65. Which I would recommend: a pre-moon 145.022-69

    Another quality video overview William - for me, I'd recommend that my 'friend' go for the best 1969 321 Speedmaster they could afford within their budget (and with just a bit more added for good measure).....

    I have 2 speedmasters, one from my grandfather 2998-02 and one from my father from around '71. So is nice to see them here in this video, and happy that I do not need to buy them!!!!! although I do need to know much about them.

    nice video William, I tried but have missed the boat as prices have gone up, but has to be a 105.012-65 with a s/n close to 24002981 just for that connection to Armstrong, I did find a 145.012-67 only 981 movements older than Collins so happy with that, yes 2998s are a minefield.

    • @Speedmaster101
      @Speedmaster101  3 года назад

      2988's can still be bought, the thing is to find one that is not claiming to be perfect for an attractive price.

    Would recommend a vintage 861. Great potential for a value increase, easily serviceable from an independent watchmakers and Omega service center doesn't have to send it to Bienne, still somewhat reasonable price and available.
    You said "tooth-paste like", was it from relume or just lower quality control for hand-painted dials at the time? Ive seen that tooth-paste like lume on 145-012s, but on the Transitional, it looked like it was perfectly machine applied.

    If it was the start of a collection, first watch would be a 78. It seems most examples have really neat loom, sharp text and the chances of getting a good condition watch at a more affordable price are more likely. Then work your way backwards. Each watch will be more expensive, more interesting and take more research and consideration.
    If it was just one watch though I'd find the best brown dial 69 I could before people really cotten on.
    I patiently wait till William treats us all to a 2915 special video. That will be a real treat

    This is so helpful thank you William! Have you ever seen a 145.012 67 SP with a white “ALPHA SECONDS HAND”?
    There is one on Chrono24 from ITALY

    • @Speedmaster101
      @Speedmaster101  3 года назад

      Hi there, a white Alpha seconds hand would in fact be non original on a 145.012

    thanks for the videos- i have a chance to purchase one of these but have my doubts as the second hand looks updated. (arrow end not flat) How hard would be to this back to and original 145.022 69.

    Fantastic video! I’m curious as to why a 1969 made watch as the year the moon landing took place isn’t worth more? As a collector of all watches I would probably only have one speedmaster in the collection… for me the 69 defines the watch

    • @dennischen8887
      @dennischen8887 7 месяцев назад +1

      that's what I'm thinking as well. Perfect time to grab one now before they shoot to the moon! pun intended

    • @Speedmaster101
      @Speedmaster101  7 месяцев назад

      Good question! The thing is the -69 never went to the moon until later. The actual moonwatch is a 105.012 and also possibly a 145.012

    Only 1 answer if You want a real 321 Moonwatch worn during Apollo lunar spaceflight missions = 145.012 (Anno 2021 still available at the 5.5 K mark for a decent one !)
    Hint: always try to buy a Speedmaster with the correct metal bracelet !

  • @dennischen8887
    @dennischen8887 7 месяцев назад

    I saw one on ebay recently that sold for 3700, had a 321 but bezel of "dot next to 90" and a dial of that post 69. I wonder if the movement was swapped by omega or they swapped the bezel and dial for a newer one?

    • @Speedmaster101
      @Speedmaster101  7 месяцев назад

      It is likely a put together, not from Omega but a private person. It still might have been cheap if the movement was correct
