1990 was a strange time, especially for a cartoon from the 60s made in the 80s talking about the future. Does it get too much hate though? Nostalgia Critic takes a look at Jetsons: The Movie.

This wouldn’t be the last time a professional voice actor got screwed by executive meddling. Everyone, except for Scooby got recast with celebrity voices in SCOOB without their knowledge and Zendaya cast as Lola in Space Jam 2 at the last minute, even though Lola was supposed to be voiced by her official voice actor, Kath Soucie. And big surprise, all the celebrity voices were horrible. Professional voice actors always get treated like crap when it comes to mainstream theatrical films.

There was a story printed by DC due to a cross-promo thing with HB. The Jetson short story was about Judy visiting her dying grandma undergoing surgery but George was currently feuding with his mom. The surgery is a mind transferal to a robot body being done by Cogsworth Cogs hence the feud. Spoiler: Grandma is Rosie.
This cross promotion also gave us a social commentary with the Flintstone World going from early stone age to modern stone age, a Space Ghost run, a Banana Splits × Suicide Squad one shot, Snagglepuss as a gay playwright in the 1950s(?), and the most successful thing from this being Scooby Apocalypse.

This movie shares a curiously similar story line as the Star Trek: The Original Series episode "Devil in the Dark." In that episode, members of a mining colony meet with constant damage caused by a mysterious being. Though a darker storyline, the crew of the Enterprise realizes that the miners are invading a creature's world and killing her eggs. It is also discovered that the creature is simply being defensive, and is actually a peaceful, logical being. In fact, the creature's behavior is beneficial to the miners, and an arrangement is made for the miner's and the creature and her babies to partner with the workers, so long as each stays out of the other's way. While The Jetsons Movie has a more environmental bent, the end result of each story is that the humans make more money with the help of the indigenous species.

It had excellent music and the animation was pretty good. I also like how they didn’t beat you over the head with its environmental message and actually had a compromise where Mr Spacey could continue his business and the Grungees got jobs and had ways to mine for the necessary ores to make the sprockets without destroying their home. Usually these things force the antagonist to stop everything they were doing and shame them for wanting to make a profit and hurting the environment. The Jetsons Movie showed how progress itself isn’t a bad thing and can benefit everyone if you find a way to do it responsibly and gives back in return.

This movie actually has a very good message; A lot of movies when the environmental damage is stopped progress just shrugs and goes home or something but that isn't realistic or fair, needs still need to be met whether it be societal needs or the needs of workers. The best solution is compromise so that progress can continue while being more environmentally safe or conscious.

Executive Meddling: After recording all of her dialogue for Judy Jetson, Universal Studios threw out Janet Waldo's performance and replaced her with 80s pop star Tiffany, who was currently under contract by the studio's record label MCA. Waldo was not told until the premiere and was understandably upset at the news, but ..ultimately held no ill-will towards anyone over it. George O'Hanlon and Mel Blanc were similarly livid and they demanded that Waldo be re-cast, but to no avail. Andrea Romano was so offended that she demanded her name be removed from the credits. If it's any consolation, a few of Waldo's lines as Judy remain undubbed, notably, her line after falling through the holographic plant ("Uh-huh, I think so.") and an offscreen line during the reveal of the Grungees' underground city ("It's not just a city, it's their home", though some closed captioning attribute this line to Jane). In addition, Waldo's voice can still be heard as George's robot secretary.

    From IMDB:
According to Iwao Takamoto in his 2009 book "My Life With a Thousand Characters", Hanna-Barbera had originally planned to only have pop singer Tiffany provide Judy Jetson's singing voice, in an attempt to add teenage marquee value to the film, while voice actress Janet Waldo, the original voice of Judy, recorded Judy's dialogue. However, at one point, somebody from Universal (whose name Takamoto never mentioned in his book) thought that the film would maintain more continuity and better publicity value if the entire role was re-dubbed with Tiffany. This instigated Universal's decision to have Tiffany replace Waldo.

That scene where Jane screams Elroy's name after the rocks fall on him stuck with me because I'd never seen The Jetsons be so emotional, like I'd never seen them get so scared like that. It spooked me and I worried Elroy may have actually been hurt or killed.
I also remember not liking the random romantic music video for Judy and the guy she just met. I thought the song was boring and I just wanted to get back to the story. Looking at it now, I can't believe how stupid I was. It's honestly an amazing visual sequence.

I watched the movie for the first time as an adult as I didn’t see it when I was a kid and I thought it was pretty good for what it was. It had an environmental message that was too preachy and in your face, the voice acting was excellent and it was nice to see most of the original voice actors working together one final time, the animation is rather smooth and art style gives a grander feeling while still feeling like the classic tv show, and the songs are amazing to hear for what is essentially a kids movie that wasn’t made by Disney.

I have a good candidate for a review video. Or at least for a Disneycember episode.
    _Rodger & Hammerstein’s Cinderella_
I watched the movie on Disney+.
I really like the multicultural cast. In my opinion, it is very fresh, especially for a film adaptation of a classic fairy tale.
But because of the multicultural cast, a certain part of the film is particularly worth discussing. It's the part where the prince wants all women in the country to try on the lost shoe. I understand why this part is included in the film. It's an important part of the original fairy tale. But I asked myself after watching: "Did the prince forget so quickly what skin color Cinderella has?"

Multicultural? I'm pretty sure only one culture is represented in that movie? The standard 18-19th century fantasy European culture. The ethnicity of the people participating in it doesn't make any difference.

    • @axelschweis4793
      @axelschweis4793 3 года назад

@@0deadx21 When I wrote about multicultural I meant the cast, the actors.
You wrote about the characters And yes, maybe they are like standard 18-19th century fantasy European fantasy culture. This is how the original fairy tale was written.
And that's why the try-on part becomes illogical due to the (very) different skin colors.
The fairy tale should have been changed a lot. Or another fairy tale should have been chosen as a template. Then the multicultural cast would not have caused any problems.
