    Cats is a 2019 musical fantasy film based on the 1981 Tony Award-winning stage musical of the same name by Andrew Lloyd Webber, which in turn was based on the poetry collection Old Possum's Book of Practical Cats (1939) by T. S. Eliot. The film is directed by Tom Hooper, in his second feature musical following Les Misérables (2012), from a screenplay by Lee Hall and Hooper. The film features an ensemble cast, including James Corden, Judi Dench, Jason Derulo, Idris Elba, Jennifer Hudson, Ian McKellen, Taylor Swift, Rebel Wilson, and Francesca Hayward.

      @@ARCtheCartoonMaster oh totally! Legitimately competent, smart, well acted or written good media is almost always better than a it's so bad it's good media. But to get to either of those, you gotta take risks and have passion. The room was is such a masterful train wreck because Tommy Wiseasu, even though he didn't have clue how to actually make a good movie, had real passion for the craft. Instead of a group of board member looking at the chart and thinking, people like hammy acting, poor writing, and scenes that make no sense, so let's put that in a movie! Exactly.
      I'd rather have something be memorably bad than forgettable bad.
      For example, I might be in the minority, but I found Superman Returns to be even worse than Superman 4. Why? Because at least 4 tried to do something different such as nuclear war, and Nuclear man, even though he was terrible.
      Superman Returns took no risks and just rehashed the 1978 film (the land plot, and using Lex as the main villain again). What we got was a bloated unexciting 2.5 hour snooze fest.

Eliot wrote about cats for his daughter. When his daughter was young, she would call cats "Jellicle Cats" and dogs "Pollicle Dogs", as toddler would mispronounce certain things or have difficulty with pronouncing words in general resulting in such baby talk. So all cats that he wrote about were her Jellicle cats and all dogs were her Pollicle dogs. In a letter to an associate, Eliot explained an idea he had for the last poem of his book (the poem was never written. The idea only existed in this letter, and was taken by Andrew Lloyd Webber and added to the musical), where all the cats and dogs would ride balloons up up up, to the Heaviside Layer.

I was quite disappointed afterwards when I wanted to see it again but it had no movie like Sound of Music, and I always hoped back then that somebody would make a movie of it so I could see it again. How young and naive I was.
    I still like Cats itself, but some things should definitely stick to its original medium, or atleast keep the irl costumes or animate it

      Anyone would've been better than Tom Hooper. His choices completely bastardized the original score by letting the ACTORS lead the orchestra instead of the two working in tandem. He also completely misunderstood the importance of Victoria and the importance of touch to the jellical cats by not only having Victoria as the main character when Cats really didn't have one and by having Grizzabella recoil from being touched by Victoria despite the fact that all she wants is to be a jellical cat again (that's the whole point of her final belt in Memory) and by having Victoria TOUCH HER TO HELP HER STAND RIGHT BEFORE SHE BELTS OUT THAT FINAL PART OF MEMORY!!! This whole thing legitimately makes me angry

  • @NeroCM
    @NeroCM 3 года назад +6

    I'll be honest, something that bothered me to no end is how they treated Grizabella's return to the group.
    In the musical, what brought her back in was the newcomer taking her hand, something the other cats refused to do because she had been banished. By touching her, it means she's accepted back in. Any cat could have done it, but most were afraid of straying from the "accepted conduct" (pun not intended).
    In the movie, she just sings a song.

    29:27 oh my God, THAT'S IT! Andrew Lloyd Weber is THE GEORGE LUCAS OF BROADWAY.
    Coming off the weird, organic 70s, he introduced a big, pulpy spectacle that harkened back to a more classic format, and gave it just enough of a creative twist that it captured people's attention, and despite being only middling in its execution, took a fading niche art form into the mainstream.

    I've done some thinking, and here's what I've come up with. The reason Cats! worked on stage, and in the 1998 staged filming, is because it is a variety show based on a book of poems. TS Eliot's poetry is fun. The show is just good fun. It works as a variety show, especially because the plot is only ever alluded to inasmuch as is needed to move on to the next act in the variety show.
    The MOVIE tried to turn a feline-based vaudeville show into an actual story with a plot. And it didn't work, because the plot was paper thin to begin with. If they had done it straight, it might have worked.
