Can You Do Have The Doug Reviews Of Barnyard Please Channel Awesome Yesssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssss OK
Honestly i think the way the creators described Jimmy Neutron "one-third Bart Simpson, one-third Albert Einstein, and one-third Jim Carrey." Sums up Jimmy Neutron perfectly
I'd divide that by 4: 1/4 everything you said + 1/4 The Gangsta Paradise Choir... (Coolio) Edit: RIP, I didn't know he died a month ago. The Gangsta Paradise Singer.
Hugh Neutron obviously had a peanut for a brain, but he clearly tried to be a good dad (It helps that the show didn't last too long to get flanderized)
Hugh Neutron (Jimmy's father) is an absolute gold character. He's one of the few comedic characters to successfully pull of the difficult balance of being a humorously dumb character (like early seasons Patrick from Spongebob) without it becoming an annoying shtick, and a huge part of that is he's innocent, kind-hearted, and often willfully silly. He also manages to be one of the few long-running comedic characters to avoid getting flanderized throughout the series. The show had good writers who had good restraint on that.
Not to mention Mark DeCarlo himself is just as hilarious and awesome as his portrayed character. Guy has an amazing sense of humor and to this day has a lot of fun as Hugh be it from internet memes using the character or just giving folks a good laugh with a line or two. Genuinely think the character of Hugh Neutron became a part of him in a way.
The entire scene of them launching the carnival ride spaceships will always standout to me as one of my favorite kids entertainment moments growing up. I still go back and watch that sequence on occasion.
4:54 One thing I really liked about this movie and show was the subtle character actions in the background. Here, a random kid greets them with his bike bell and Hugh waves at him. That does absolutely nothing for the story and probably means nothing, but it adds a touch of humanity to the scene and makes their world feel a bit more real.
You're actually wrong. Not only is this moment monumental to Hugh's character development and an integral part of the story, but it also set a precedent for the rest of animation as a whole. This scene alone has mere Neon Genesis Evangelion levels of nuance and depth; to underestimate it completely and utterly lacks insight. Hugh's hand movement alone tells us a multifold story which takes hours to unpack.
I always feel like it's details such as these that truly make something enjoyable. It shows the effort put into something, gives you things to discover upon rewatching, and like you said makes the world feel more real and immersive.
This is what 2000s nickelodeon especially had. Charm. The writing is surprisingly clever. The characters are simple but memorable. And they could just be so creative. Spongebob, Fairly Odd Parents, Danny Phantom, and Jimmy Neutron were just a few examples how shockingly good this era of nickelodeon was. They're shows that may have been for kids, but they were clever enough that even adults could get some good laughs.
And for shows that are mostly for kids, sometimes they handled pretty adult things. My Brother's Keeper is one of my all time favorite episodes in ANY cartoon, because of how it handles depression, how others can leech off your own negative energy, and how you can't help others unless they want to be helped. There's a really nice scene between Danny and Jazz where she calls him a great brother, that she's proud of him. But Danny brushes her off. And even he's surprised at his own actions but too in his own head to understand why. It's only towards the end, when cornered by Spectra that he realizes that he'd been so busy dumping on himself, he couldn't others supporting him, and was able to bring himself out of that depressive state. Seeing him fly so freely at the end, is just an iconic moment.
Fun Fact: Originally, Jimmy's name was going to be "Jonathan Quazar", but his name was changed to "James Isaac Neutron" (a name inspired by "Sir Isaac Newton" that Davis came up with while walking his dog) 'cause Nickelodeon said his original name sounded too similar to similar-sounding named characters that they didn't want him to be confused with such as "Jonathan Quest" or "Captain Quazar".
I always thought the scene of them turning the carnival rides into spaceships was just so damn cool. The way the Roller Coaster & Ferris wheel move was so creative.
Also liked No Secrets’s cover of Kids in America played in that scene. Maybe it is my nostalgia goggles but I do always have a soft spot for ‘90s/ early 2000s pop music!
It's been awhile since I've seen the show, but from what I remember, I do agree with you. I remember Cindy seeming to be jealous of this one girl that Jimmy does have a crush on. I did also hear that there was another season of the show planned which would have seen Jimmy and Cindy become a couple, but the studio that animated the show went bankrupt and ended the series. It's a shame as I would have liked to see that development in their relationship and how they and their friends handled it.

I still think from the golden age of Nickelodeon Jimmy Nuetron is actually one of the best shows from that time period and still holds up pretty well in my opinion for what the show was trying to go for
One thing that always stuck out to me as a kid from this movie was the super creative way they turned the roller coasters into space ships, a literal kids dream put on screen for me
If the Eds can make a satellite out of a cardboard box and everyday household items, KND creating new age technology with 2x4 aesthetics. Then turning theme park rides into space ships are one of the things that even kids dream about. :)
Oh I agree,it was colorful intense, fun, suspenseful, adventurous. It felt like the ultimate amusement park ride with tons of people practically everything kids would enjoy.
I used to think it was a song written for the film, didn't find out until years later the song existed beforehand But yes awesome scene, used to rewind that scene on my VHS of it a lot
Believe it or not, The Adventure of Jimmy Neutron actually feels like it has the story structure of kids' shows today. They start off as one-off adventures, but then get more deep as it goes on.
Jimmy Neutron slowly building actual arcs was pretty cool back in the day, the recurring villains, the slow burn of Jimmy and Cindy's relatioship, even the quiet development of Sheen and Libby in the background while Carl just got creepier and creepier, it all truly was ahead of its time.
That scene with Cindy being nice to Jimmy was a surprising contrast to how she acted towards him throughout the film. I figured she was gonna do the "I told you so" moment, but having the rival/bully be nice was actually enjoyable, and it still stands out to me to this day.
I love this movie and the show! To this day my Dad and I still crack up and quote Carl's line, "Come on you stupid butterfly!" Just the line delivery is hilarious to me
Yeah, my brother and I still quite “Helloo? What.. galaxy… are you from?” “Ooblah.” “WHERE IS YOUR LEADER?!” “Ooblah stop it, it’s _toast.”_ “Ohh. HELLO, TOAST!! I greatly admire your ship!” 😊
For me and my parents(especially my mom), it's the my clothes don't match kid and the sheen ultralord chicken song during the chase, along with Carl's "lullaby", and hello toast
One of the holy quadrinity of Spongebob, Danny Phantom, & Fairly OddParents. This movie brings back nothing but good vibes and childhood nostalgia. They don't make cartoons like this anymore.
Funny you specified those four because the video game “Nicktoons Unite,” is a crossover between those exact shows. Every cast member reprised their roles for it too.
From an objective quality standpoint? You can argue positioning, but Nickelodeon's "Top 4" (and, sorry, the distance between these four and the rest is not even close) is Hey Arnold, Avatar: The Last Airbender, Invader Zim and Danny Phantom. Some combo of SpongeBob, Jimmy Neutron, Fairly OddParents, The Loud House, Legend of Korra, The Wild Thornberrys, Rugrats and My Life as a Teenage Robot can form the rest of a reasonable Top 10.
Spongebob, Fairly Oddparents, and Jimmy Neutron definitely, but the 4th one is a tough competition between Avatar and Danny Phantom. I could argue Rugrats in my case, but I was a very Late 90s/Early 2000s kid and after 2001 Rugrats was irrelevant as it had peaked in the Early 90s anyways.
It was actually the first animated film made using off the shelf software which is probs why it didn’t look on par, but definitely was on par with some big hitters at the time. This movie was great
@1234Studios Off the shelf refers to the fact that jimmy neutron didn't use a custom rendering pipe and software, but standardized commercially available one. Anyone with the money could just go to a specialist store and buy a copy to use. A good comparison is todays engines for video games. Anyone can just grab a copy of Unrela Engine 5, and make a game with it. But e.g. EA made their own engine (Frostbite) themselves, which is not available. So unless you work for an EA studio, you simply can't use it for anything, or even get your hands on a copy.
Another interesting fact from this film is: Jonathan Alexander Davis loved collecting, which was what gave him the inspiration for the character Sheen Estevez. Sheen was originally going to be Japanese 'cause he was named after a Japanese employee who'd worked for Davis, but he was changed to Mexican 'cause they couldn't find a good Japanese actor to voice him.
Whenever I watched this movie, I always got so hyped at the Retroland Takeoff sequence. The song used got me so freakin amped, and you could feel the energy and sense of fun behind what Nickelodeon was making in that scene. It’s not perfect for sure, but this movie was fun when I was growing up.
I think it’s interesting hearing people discuss Nickelodeon because I feel like there’s 2 different generations of Nickelodeon fans, there’s the Ren and Stimpy, Rocko’s Modern Life and Rugrats generation and then there’s the SpongeBob, Fairly Odd Parents and Jimmy Neutron generation
Growing up in the 90s I have loved the old Nickelodeon shows and movies, but Jimmy was my top watched show along with Danny Phantom when I was a kid no matter how the animation looked.
Doug comments on the animation looking cheap, this was actually the first feature-length film made entirely with commercial animation software, that is, software that can be bought off-the-shelf and wasn't specifically developed for animation studios with big budgets like Pixar and Dreamworks. Given that is the case this was a pretty amazing achievement for its time.
"To write creatively stupid people" And let's be honest, Hugh hits that mark perfectly. The charm he gives off when he is being his usual "Hugh" self is the reason why so many people just gravitate to him. So much so that you could say that was the reason why he got into Nickelodeon Smash over his son...
This movie actually had a fairly significant milestone in animation history. It's the first theatrically released 3d animated movie to be created with consumer accessible software.
Jimmy Neutron, the movie and the show, were definitely written by people who remembered what it was like to be a kid. They gave me just the right amount of smart, immature, and creative adventures I wanted at a young age!
7:36 THAT'S SO TRUE. You have to strike a very specific balance so the character is charmingly dumb and never crosses into the "so annoyingly dumb, you hate the character" territory
Classic Patrick Star definitely comes to mind. Seeing what he turned into shows that the original writers were super talented and knew exactly what to do with him.
Yup, way too many comic relief characters are written in such a way that they cross over into annoying the audience when they should be annoying the characters way more. Like, it’s fine to poke fun at the audience too for the sake of comedy, but it’s a delicate balance in making sure the character still remains likable for the audience to give it a pass.
RIP Aaron Carter. It’s eerie how this came out days before considering AC was _aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaall over_ the Jimmy Neutron soundtrack. “Leave It Up To Me,” “Go Jimmy Jimmy,” and “A.C.’s Alien Nation” were all absolute bops in a stacked album.
This was a movie that I saw at school in an auditorium at my school and we all had a blast with it. Our favorite part was when the kids blast off into space. I also loved the show and my favorite character is Carl Wheezer. I got to meet Rob Paulsen himself and told him how funny I thought the character was and he appreciated that.
I've always expected that you were going to take a look at Jimmy neutron didn't grow up with the entirely but curious to see what you think of it so thanks for making my Wednesday feel better 👍❤️
It's kind of surreal to see Nostalgia Critic reviewing stuff I watched as a kid. (Not that he's never done it before, but it's not all that frequent). I can't remember much about this movie (I watched the TV show more, actually didn't know the movie came first) but I'll always remember being amazed as an 8-year-old when Jimmy, Shrek, and Mike & Sulley 'appeared' at the 2001 Oscars for Best Animated Feature.
7:36 I’m pretty sure Hugh Neutron is considered one of the great comedic idiots in animation. I remember him getting a lot of the best lines in the show, too.
I do enjoy how as the series goes on he's starting to do videos for stuff nostalgic for the newer viewers, not just stuff from the eighties or nineties. Maybe it's a sign that the nostalgia well has run dry for those older generations but it is fun to see him tackling stuff that isn't necessarily his normal ballpark!
This movie was still one of the best parts of my childhood to this day. Along with the tv series it was definitely one the greatest Nicktoons of all time. Plus it does feel bittersweet looking back especially after hearing Aaron Carter passed away cause he did one of the songs on the soundtrack.
This was the first movie I ever saw in theaters back when I was 4. 20 years later I rewatched it again and I honestly think besides the animation it still holds up. There's a lot of jokes I never got as a kid!
Here are some fun facts about Debi Derryberry: • Her maiden name is Greenberg, • She attended Indio High School in Indio, California between 1974-1978, • Did gymnastics during her teen years
Jimmy neutron is a core memory of childhood tv shows, and I remember this movie. And episode about the sentient pairs of jeans.. and the fact that Hugh was a meme gold mine lmao
This was one of my generations earliest childhood classic series and it still holds up in my opinion. I like it more because it wasn't dragged on too long like fairly odd parents or spongebob. It's still a creative series that tried to teach kids good lessons and with the series getting a DVD release, I'm looking forward to rewatching this timeless classic
@@Dr.WaluigiReviews Its still good after Channel Chasers. The major decline was after Wishology when most original writers (Including Scott Fellows) left And Butch hired a bunch of new ones that had no experience with the show. They proceed to spam the three remaining characters (Crocker, Timmy's Dad and Foop) while other secondary characters were being shafted.
I'm glad you're reviewing this. Apparently this was the first movie I went to see (I was only a year old). This brings nothing but good memories of me and my younger brothers watching this
9:04 I like that the kids formed an angry mob with torches. It's simultaneously childish and darkly humorous. Makes you wonder what they were gonna do to Jimmy.
I always had a soft spot for Jimmy Neutron. Jimmy Neutron as a TV Series and Film were both very good, Carl Wheezer along with Hugh Neutron and Judy Neutron are my top 3 favorite Jimmy Neutron characters, and the soundtrack for the Jimmy Neutron film was absolutely stellar.
I was 3 when my mom took me to see this movie. It’s still one of my favorite movies to this day. My favorite scenes are the kids having the time of their lives when they discovered their parents are gone and making the rides into rockets.
This is seriously one of my absolute favorite movies of all time. I grew up on the movie as well as I grew up watching the show, loving it to death as much as I do now. This movie STILL holds up today.
I was 19 when this movie/show aired and I thought it was a lot of fun. The script and characters make up for the wonky animation. My sister and I enjoyed watching new episodes when they aired and we rarely got bored. The people working on it clearly wanted to make something good and stuck with it. I appreciate this show for how unique and fun it was.
I saw this in theaters...It was one of the last things I did I did with my closest friend at the time before he moved away. It's a nice trip down memory lane for me
Honestly i think the most funniest thing about this movie is When they reach Planet Yolkus, Jimmy Neutron says "I've found them, repeat I've found them". Which is a quote from Star Wars: Episode V - The Empire Strikes Back (1980) when Han Solo and Luke Skywalker are found on Hoth.
I only ever watched this movie once before but I grew up on the series. And I have to say A Nostalgia Critic episode that actually touches on my nostalgia. BRILLIANT!!
It's funny. Obviously the 3D Animation hasnt aged perfectly, but I think that Jimmy Neutron's designs and generally cartoonish physics makes it still enjoyable to this day. It was one of my favorite shows as a kid. (The Fairy Godparents crossover blew my mind with the 2D/3D combination.)
You know, I agree that it hasn't aged perfectly, but oddly enough, it's probably one of the better looking CGI films to modern eyes because they deliberately WEREN'T trying to be cutting edge. They knew their CGI looked old, even by the standards of the time, but they embraced the simple look to let them do creative things that they wouldn't be able to do with better tech due to a lack of time and/or budget.
One of my favorite moments from the Jimmy Neutron series was when flying through space, Sheen asks Jimmy how it's possible for them to survive in the vacuum of space without any breathing equipment. And instead of actually explaining, they just cut to Carl singing next to them.
You know for what Jimmy Nuetron was trying to go for i think it nailed it on the head, it wasn't trying to be this super dark and edgy show for kids and teenagers like say X-Men the Animated series or Gargoyles, it was trying to be something you can just turn on and enjoy without having to feel the seriousness troubles of society on your back and after all isn't that what a show of this style is suppose to be?
It definitely felt like it was distinctly "for kids", but in a good way. Like it wasn't talking down to us, but still giving us the fun, creative shenanigans we wanted to see!

Being a kid back in the day. This was a big deal. Jimmy definitely holds a place in my heart.
it was big deal for me to
It was actually the first animated film made using off the shelf software which is probs why it didn’t look on par, but definitely was on par with some big hitters at the time.
I will always be grateful to this movie for being responsible for the plot of the Nicktoons ride at Universal Studios
Yep, Sheen was short for Shinichiro.
That may explain his obsession with Ultra Lord.
90s kids and early 2000s kids
What about the 2010s era (or as I like to call it, the Dark Age)?
I grew up with both ends
And i belong to both of them
And then the poor kids growing up with the garbage they make today
Jimmy Neutron was one of my favorite shows to watch as a little kid on Nickelodeon along with SpongeBob SquarePants.
I agree same here 😁
Mine too.
Its one of my favorites from my childhood.
Couldn’t agree more!!
The Jimmy/Power hours are the definitive childhood fun
I remember the scene were the kid who won an eating competition crying afterwards because he missed his parents always really saddened me.
Even one of the kids who’re doing the news report cry too because she wants her mom back
I always felt bad for that poor kid too. I was like "Why did they have to give that kid the most adorable voice and such an innocent design?!"
He won. But at what cost?
Oh my god I thought I was the only one that was really saddened by that scene good to know I’m not the only one
That scene upset me so much when I was 6. I watched the movie recently and I cracked up at that scene
Growing up in the 90s I have loved the old Nickelodeon shows and movies, but Jimmy was my top watched show along with Danny Phantom when I was a kid no matter how the animation looked.
Rocko's Modern Life is my favorite show.
"To write creatively stupid people"
And let's be honest, Hugh hits that mark perfectly. The charm he gives off when he is being his usual "Hugh" self is the reason why so many people just gravitate to him. So much so that you could say that was the reason why he got into Nickelodeon Smash over his son...
Literally any clip with Jimmy's dad Hugh is comedy gold
There's a reason he's in Nickelodeon All-Stars Brawl and Jimmy isn't.
I loved his goofy obsession with ducks 😂🦆like I was watching the show as a teenager and thought that was so funny.
@PrismOpal And shows the perfectly imperfect Dad. 😎
Wow this takes me back to my childhood! I remember watching the show every day when it was in Nickelodeon.
I always wondered why Ms Fowl didn’t like Sheen
@@Hufflepuffozian Because Sheen was viewed as being a crazed idiot who only talks about io favorite superhero Ultra Lord.
Same here.
I remember the ads, and hearing “Kids In America”
Such a nostalgic bit.
Still have the film on VHS as well
I remember watching the movie over and over again on my VHS as a kid.

I still have the VHS tape of this movie!
And I'm never giving it away!
I remember the music video that was attached to the VHS.
@@nicktechnubyte1184 Same.
And hes even better in the series.
Jimmy's robot dog, Goddard, is still to this day one of my favorite fictional characters ever. No joke.
To this day I still want Goddard
I want a Goddard of my own!
@@eslurp Fun Fact: He's voiced by Frank Welker, AKA Megatron.
This is one of the first truly nostalgic movies for someone like me. There is only like two other movies that fit it for me.
I had to do a double take on your comment there. I didn't know he died recently.
I kind of miss this era where all the nicktoons got theatrical movies, rugrats, wild thornberrys, they were all a fun time
This was a movie that I saw at school in an auditorium at my school and we all had a blast with it. Our favorite part was when the kids blast off into space. I also loved the show and my favorite character is Carl Wheezer. I got to meet Rob Paulsen himself and told him how funny I thought the character was and he appreciated that.
I've actually wanted to see him do this one for a while. Nostalgia hits hard. Also, that amusement park scene will never not be epic.
The best scene ever!! Especially with Kids of America playing in the background
I still have to say once you hear the theme to this show you will have it stuck in your brain forever, whether you like it or not
Indeed. Written by Brian "Star Crunch" Causey from the Alabama indie surf-rock band Man or Astro-Man?

As a fan of this show I can’t thank you enough for this critic, you have my eternal love❤️❤️❤️
Plus it does feel bittersweet looking back especially after hearing Aaron Carter passed away cause he did one of the songs on the soundtrack.
two song kid and go jimmy
Fun Fact: Cindy's voice actress voices Ashley Graham in Capcom's Resident Evil 4 (2005).
She's also Orel Puppington from Moral Orel.
This was the first movie I ever saw in theaters back when I was 4. 20 years later I rewatched it again and I honestly think besides the animation it still holds up. There's a lot of jokes I never got as a kid!
GOD DAMN!! I never thought he would review this! This pleases me.
I used to watch this movie all the time when I was younger, one of my favourite movies back in the day tbh
Rest In Peace, Aaron Carter: 13:57 😞
This movie feels like a 2000s time capsule.
A surprise to be sure, but a VERY welcomed one.
I love this film! And I'm so happy to see you cover it!

Here are some fun facts about Debi Derryberry:
• Her maiden name is Greenberg,
• She attended Indio High School in Indio, California between 1974-1978,
• Did gymnastics during her teen years
Jimmy neutron is a core memory of childhood tv shows, and I remember this movie. And episode about the sentient pairs of jeans.. and the fact that Hugh was a meme gold mine lmao
I grew up with Jimmy Neutron. I genuinely never realized the movie came out first until now
This was one of my generations earliest childhood classic series and it still holds up in my opinion. I like it more because it wasn't dragged on too long like fairly odd parents or spongebob. It's still a creative series that tried to teach kids good lessons and with the series getting a DVD release, I'm looking forward to rewatching this timeless classic
Chloe legit ruined the show.
@@ZanyMei I'd say the show was ruined when they decided to continue the series past channel chasers
This brings nothing but good memories of me and my younger brothers watching this
The early to mid 2000’s was the best era to be a kid imo
Facts bro
13:57 watching this on the day Aaron Carter died. His Jimmy Neutron songs were great! RIP Aaron Carter 😢
Ha a classic. I saw this in theaters as a kid and I still watch every occasion. Including the series
"This is a man in his 40s watching Jimmy Neutron." Doug there is NOTHING WRONG with that.
I loved this show as a kid! And honestly it still holds up, as well as the animation surprisingly
3:26 His reaction of messing up Debi Derryberry’s name after getting it right a few times. XD
Still better than "that guy with the deep voice", Tone Loc.
The nostalgic feeling this movie gives me is unmatched by any other movie. Awesome review!
I was 3 when my mom took me to see this movie. It’s still one of my favorite movies to this day.
My favorite scenes are the kids having the time of their lives when they discovered their parents are gone and making the rides into rockets.

7:28 I can’t stop rewinding to this part! The Twilight Zone joke is too good.
I find it ironic how Jimmy being a smart inventor type kid had more friends than Poindexter Dexter self proclaimed boy genius.
Let's not forget that this movie was nominated for an Oscar. alongside Shrek and Monsters, Inc.

A movie from my childhood. Next to Pixar, this was my intro to CGI animation.
"Brain Blast!!!" One of my childhood favorites, I still have this movie on VHS lol
We're the Kids in America! I could not get that song out of my head when I was a kid back then!
WHOA-OH
@Clayton Marnin That is a beast song but I love rock so Blitzkrieg Bop by The Ramones was the shit when I heard it to me!
1:37 and 12:41 I loved this sequence. It was cool how they transformed amusement park rides into spaceships.
I saw this in theaters...It was one of the last things I did I did with my closest friend at the time before he moved away. It's a nice trip down memory lane for me
LETS GO!!! I have so much nostalgia for this film
2:25- “Don’t act like you have anything better to do.” Well he’s not wrong there.
I only ever watched this movie once before but I grew up on the series. And I have to say A Nostalgia Critic episode that actually touches on my nostalgia. BRILLIANT!!
3:42 That edit fit so well that I laughed
Ahh childhood. Believe it or not I can recite the entire movie without watching it lol
I believe that
I think i'm more oddly impressed with how much Nickelodeon tried to promote the heck out of this film.
I think this was actually Nickelodeon's first original animated feature film.
@@samuelchurch5124 That explains a lot.
One of my favorite moments from the Jimmy Neutron series was when flying through space, Sheen asks Jimmy how it's possible for them to survive in the vacuum of space without any breathing equipment. And instead of actually explaining, they just cut to Carl singing next to them.
6:41 Thankfully, he gets over it as JimmyxCindy is canon at the end of the series. Love the trope of Tsundere lovers
