It’s one thing to have celebrity voices, but having celebrity voices at the expense of professional voice actors is a true crime that shouldn’t go unpunished. Just because you have a celebrity voice, doesn’t mean they’ll be good at their role. It makes me feel bad for all the professional voice actors who don’t get enough fame or time to shine in cinema.

    • @Deadwolf27
      @Deadwolf27 2 года назад +3

Isn't it always at the expense of professional voice actors? Every role that's given to a celebrity actor is one denied to a professional. Though I guess there's times when the role is specifically made and written with a celebrity in mind.

The problem is they are often hired for their fame not their skill at voice acting. There are people better known for physical acting who take a liking to it, take it seriously and end up doing more voice acting like Clancy Brown and Mark Hamill who are now better known for voice work. If you’re voice nerd like me you watch animated stuff BECAUSE of the voice cast but I’ll avoid a film if clearly they are going for clout and casting untested famous actors. If someone is bad at the task then it’ll make an inferior product.

I would have just had Tiffany do the singing voice to get the best of both worlds. Swapping out speaking roles on classic shows almost always sounds awkward. They had already done just that in "Rocking with Judy Jetson" where BJ Ward provided Judy's singing voice but retained Janet Waldo for speaking roles. There was no reason for them to do anything different here except to make more money.

For comparison, Tiffany's voice for Judy is slightly different from Janet Waldo's voice, and Waldo was still in good health at the time compared to George O' Hanland, Penny Singleton, and Mel Blanc. Tiffany probably would've been fine as Judy's singing voice, but that's about it. I also agree that replacing iconic voice actors for celebrities just doesn't seem fair to them because their voices are what bring the characters to life, and how people recognize them. From where I sit, you shouldn't recast voice actors unless they're unhealthy, or have passed away, and you can't just replace them with any old celebrity.

I have very complicated feelings about the film, with all of this fascinating me since I was young. I think Tiffany's actual songs for the film, especially You and Me, are enjoyable and nostalgic isolated from the situation. But knowing Waldo finished her performance only for it to be almost entirely thrown out, especially as someone that grew up loving her as Judy, has always made it hard to enjoy this movie myself. And knowing what happened to George O'Hanlon makes it even more awkward to watch, especially whenever George's voice noticeably changes to Bergman's replacement fill-in and becomes a reminder of it. The film itself, as far as story and pacing goes, isn't perfect even without those, so it doesn't do the best job advocating for revisiting outside of nostalgia for myself.

I have never understood the decision to recast a beloved voice actor from a TV show. There is a reason why the person was cast, because the voice fits well for the character they were going for, the charm they bring to the role, and it just sounds natural. Having a celeb voice the character just feels like a cheap way to get more money and 9/10 times, it fails because the celebs sound like they are just reading off the page and not really putting forth the emotion or tone of the character. It really pulls you out of the experience as that celeb voice is not one you're used to. (And even if younger fans won't understand the star power of the voice actors for the TV show, I bet a lot of older fans will cuz they have grown up with them.)

At least his George was closer to the original voice at the time. As for Tiffany, they should had just use her for the songs, and maybe give her a different character to voice instead of replacing Janet as Hudy. Patrick also did an good job taking over Elory from Daws Butler who sadly passed away before the recording session started. Having them do that to Janet, ESPECIALLY back then is just…
How could Hanna Barbera let those big head studio idiots get away with that? They were both still around back then, so THEY should of had control over thier own VA’s and characters…
The others I can understand as they unfortunately passed away, (and it’s honestly sad how Hanna Barbera had such really big plans for them for the movie as they expected everyone from the original to return, just for them to pass away while in pre-production getting replaced and then on top of that Janet getting replaced, (although probably the right thing to do was probably not even releases it if mostly everyone was gonna get replaced eventually), but having them do that to Janet as she was still around having her record all her lines and happy to be Judy (probably not long until stopping voicing her), in a big project just to have everything and all that taken away to be replaced by a dumb celebrity that doesn’t even sound like the actual character, she must of been bummed and heartbroken, (I heard the same for “Scoob!” when it happened to most of the cast), but back then, the fact they basically exploited Janet for Tiffany while Hanna Barbera had no control is just sad… It’s sad in general they STILL do this like in Scoob, The Mario Movie, etc. ) The only time they should do this is if the VA’s pass away, then that’s unfortunately understandable, (kinda like those two Top Cat movies from 2011 and 2015, Arnold Stang unfortunately already passed so they got a big name celebrity to voice Top Cat, and ironically honestly almost REALLY close to Arnold’s original… Ironically too around the time this came out he actually voiced Top Cat for a movie in 1988. XD But you don’t just replace a VA if they are still around and can do the voice… Janet, Charles Martinet, etc.

Amongst other things, its message was surprisingly progressive. In the interest of fairness, I too thought Tiffany's songs were good. Universal didn't have Andrea's ethics of not letting a person's voice sound bad. They should've had Tiffany just sing. I don't blame Andrea for having her credit removed. I have the film on VHS recorded from TV. Even as a child, I knew that Tiffany wasn't the right voice despite not knowing the names of the cast then. The worst part of the recast is that Janet Waldo didn't even know it happened until she saw the film for the first time at the premier. Mel Blanc and George O'Hanlon had fought against this executive decision but ultimately failed.
Blanc was still recording lines from the hospital before he had passed.
Waldo would still do voice work with HB afterwards most notably reprising her roles of Penelope Pitstop and Pearl Slaghoople from the Flintstones until 2000.
This was also Penny Singleton's (Jane) final role as she retired from acting afterwards.
I doubt a Waldo cut would be released due to potential issues of the rights since AFAIK Universal still holds the film rights to the IP as the film was on Peacock last year and removed earlier this year.

When it comes to voice acting recasts with celebrities who DON'T do a good performance, and "adapting" a cartoon to modern ages including social "tendencies" to attract bigger audiencies, high executives don't hesitate to do this as long as it's profitable, despite puting the cartoon's escence at the edge (SCOOB is a clear example, and now with the cancellation of

  • @pagodrink

This whole situation reminds me a lot of Lupin the Third and the Fuma Conpiracy.
For those who don't know, Lupin III is similar to Scooby Doo, being a series that has been on going for over 50 years. When TMS was making a 20th anniversary OVA in 1987, they spent a lot of money on the animation that they couldn't afford the regular cast and the series composer, Yuji Ohno. They replaced them with a new cast without asking the actors permission, only talking to the og Mangaka, Monkey Punch, who wasn't for the decision, but didn't feel like it was his place to stop it.
This lead to the new actors and TMS getting hate mail from fans, and the old voice actor for Lupin, Yasuo Yamada, having a falling out with Monkey Punch, which seemingly wouldn't be repaired before Yamada's death in 1995. So the special has become a bit of a black sheep in the Japanese Lupin fandom.
One upside to this was that Lupin's Fuma Actor, Toshio Furukawa, was brought back to the Lupin Franchise to voice Lupin the Second (aka Lupin's Dad) in Lupin Zero and it seems that some fans today appreciate his role in Fuma Conspiracy.

Is the movie’s failure in the North American market also the reason that we never saw it get an international release? I live in the U.K., and had VHS tapes of The Jetsons series, which also promoted the movie in its trailers - I remember them very specifically RE-NAMING Judy as a character to “Tiffany”, but wasn’t really aware that this was because the singer had been re-cast to voice her, though I did guess that there’d been a re-casting, which at the time I found pretty crass.
Unfortunately I never saw The Jetsons Movie released at all in the U.K. And despite holidaying in Florida many times - November 1990 being my first time, I believe - nothing of the movie ever caught my eye; VHS release, or otherwise. And despite PAL/NTSF incompatibilities back then, which essentially created a hard and technical “region lock” for VHS at the time (as well as cartridge-based video games), we DID eventually have the means in my family to watch VHS tapes bought over in the states. Though I think we only ever bought Disney’s “Aladdin”. And as I say, The Jetsons Movie never passed my eye, so I never ended up watching it.

That's the problem with animated movies based on an animated property, isn't it? The films constantly need star power in their corner, otherwise why bother paying to see something you can see at home for free. So they're usually stuck with two options, either give the characters a celebrity voice recast or have a bunch of characters voiced by celebrities that were invented just for the movie and are never EVER mentioned or seen again. Even in Japan where movies based on concurrent television anime are more mainstream, they always manage to pop in some big time comedian guest star, sometimes as a completely shoehorned in cameo. Not saying there aren't some exceptions here and there. Transformers did use characters from the movie, but recast them with cheaper, standard voice actors. Bob's Burgers already had celebrity comedian voice actors, and everyone in the cast was a regular or recurring cast member. Even had to recast a Bill Hader character. The Simpsons already was celebrity cameo fodder, and other than a couple high profile cameos (some were actually cut), even the villain was voiced by a recurring guest star. South Park basically sold itself as an uncensored version to the point it was in the title. The Jetsons had that 80's revival series back then, and it was still being rerun when the movie was coming out. I don't see why they couldn't just do the cheap thing and make the new characters for the movie celeb voiced.

These are completely different characters that exist in another universe (like the MCU), aside from still having Colleen and Frank voice the mostly unchanged Tails and Scooby. Plus, the entire cast behind those films did tons of research on doing the characters justice while adding a new layer to them.
Plus, Lola's voice and voice actors have never been consistent and have always changed. Especially since The Looney Tunes Show had Kristen Wiig voice the character.

Agree to disagree on the actual motives behind casting of SCOOB!. While Kristin Wiig is my favorite (and only version I like of) Lola, Kath has been the most consistent Lola - including being the actor to originate the role in the original first movie this was a sequel to. Most of the Looney Tunes characters have switched voices through projects, but to bring in her original and most regular actor for a project, have her finish the role, and then throw out the performance for a celebrity that does a sub-par performance and gets all the credit over the remaining voice actors isn't any better than a Tiffany situation, especially since there weren't any songs to promote this time.
