    Considering the baddies of the egyptian film turned out to be Velma and her crew working to protect the artefacts, it would have fit in very well had the bad guys not been motivated by greed but instead by wanting to protect their land from malicious colonial attitudes. It could've been a great educational message for many kids to learn about how mistreat Hawai'i is, particularly by mainland Americans, but then they wouldn't be able to romanticise the islands as much and would have to address the gang being an active part of the problem (such as Daphne being hired to make a Hawai'ian themed swimsuit range, rather than hiring indigenous artists that could truly show off the culture of the island and what the wildlife means to them, as oppose to having an outsider come in and just take some photos).
    A really good point could have been made about how real estate is being bought on the islands and sold to mainlanders, pushing the locals out of their own communities and causing them to not be able to afford to live in their own homes anymore, or how a person with high political office is exploiting the environment for her own financial gain as opposed to thinking of the needs of the community. Or how native communities are being neglected/ not receiving proper funding in favour of the tourist communities, which are bad for the local economy and the natural environment.
    This is one of the few scooby movies that I really properly remember from when I was a kid, never had it on dvd, but when it came on tv I loved it, and I think it's a real shame they went for a very basic ending after coming so close through the rest of the film to a very sound message

    • @n8zog584
      @n8zog584 2 года назад +19

      Pushing locals out isn't only something that happens to indigenous people. It's happened to the Irish and Israelis. Many governments also have processes of immenent domain (though they are often called something else), which is basically the power to take land from citizens for very little compensation. Natuve Qatari's uses slave labor of minorities. I dont believe it is simply white colonialism that does this. However colonialism makes it much easier to treat a group as the "other". This simply represents how the powerful can abuse their power.
      And to those claiming this is only a capitalist issue, communist and socialist countries have undone native customs and pushed out native groups as well. In my opinion, it's only an issue of power corrupting people.

      The "smart" character does tend to be where a writer will place their own beliefs. I give them a lot of credit for casting Adam West as someone that isn't a reference to him being Batman or as a crazy version of himself. And also, Terri Garr. Big fan. Young Frankenstein is one of, if not my favorite movies and Mr. Mom is always a good time.

    • @Scoobytopia
      @Scoobytopia  2 года назад +9

      Yeah, the role wasn't written for Adam West specifically (like the character obviously based on him in Mask of the Blue Falcon) which I think makes for the best use you could get from him at this time. Hearing him actually be a different character instead of just going "hey, remember that he's Batman" with characters he was given or literally himself is much more fun and less lazy. (Though obviously there were still strong uses of that.) Hearing Garr is also obviously a treat with so many iconic roles she's had, and she's put to pretty good use here without being obscured by other characters or performances which is nice.

    Great video - never noticed little jim making the rocket scientist comment about Snooki, that's hilarious. I am very happy you stuck that note at the end of the video about travelling to Hawaii. I gotta speak critically on the movie's ending though - It goes against the streak of general anti-capitalism and respectful(ish) portrayal of the Hawaiian people the movie had built up and actually makes the earlier positive portrayal even worse.
    The ending implies that anyone who would be against outsiders forcing their way into native traditions and taking up all native land, is secretly just seeking to profit from the land within capitalism themselves. Any arguments focused on maintaining native tradition or allowing the native people their land is actually secretly about profitting from capitalism themselves. This reframes all of Manu and Snooki's earlier actions as greedy.
    Many Scooby-Doo travel movies are culturally insensitive to varying degrees, but this one has always hit extremely close to home for me, so apologies if this is ranty. What I think they should have done is about anything other than what they did. What you suggested, with Manu doing it for good reason would have been better. Having the Real Estate agent do the current plan against a rival real estate agent would have made sense, as he's not on a moral campaign. Having any of mainland surfers do it so they could eliminate competition in the surfer contest would have been less disrespectful.
    I guess coming down to it - thank you for the great video. You make great stuff.

    • @Scoobytopia
      @Scoobytopia  2 года назад +16

      Yeah, them doing it for the money doesn't even make sense within the plot context, with nothing setting up or suggesting it prior in regards to them. Manu never so much as references needing help with money. Them doing it for a noble reason may be obvious but actually makes sense with everything set up. I do think that is a pretty big flaw the movie has that does some damage to the goodwill it built up until that point. Thank you for watching!

    • @aneonfoxtribute
      @aneonfoxtribute 2 года назад +4

      In my opinion, having Manu and Snookie do it for the money doesn't necessarily imply that everyone who wants to preserve their culture and their lands are just doing it because they're greedy, especially when there are characters like Little Jim who aren't in on the plan and clearly genuinely want to preserve his culture. If Manu and Snookie were the only ones, then I would agree that it's a really bad implications. But I think as it stands, it's just a couple of people who did what they wanted to for greed rather than implying anything about people who want to defend their cultural heritage.

  • @emperorrevan6992
    @emperorrevan6992 Год назад +12

    Honestly if they wanted to frame Snooki and Manu doing it for money, they could have tacked in a “we planned to sell the real estate to only locals at affordable prices.”
    It could have been a story of questionable means to produce an arguably respectable end motive. Essentially another “the ends never justify the means story.” Even have a parallel where seeing the cultural hurt she was doing, the mayor could have had an epiphany to be more respectful of Hawaiian culture and traditions after the fact with no personal benefits to be gained.
    Honestly it could have been a decent message of the ends don’t justify the means whilst making Manu and Snooki sympathetic villains and showing the arguably real villain, the mayor, sees the error of her ways and makes changes.
    Regardless, I still enjoyed this movie a lot as a kid. While it’s aged not the greatest, it still has a fond memory for me.

    Huh... Well... This used to be one of my favorites as a kid, and because of the rest of the story being so good, I guess I misremembered the ending, cause I forgot that they were doing it for the real estate and not actually the message throughout the whole movie...
    This movie and also Loch Ness has HUGE spots in my heart because Professor Pembrooke (and I thought Manu and Snookie before this refresher) were the start of my favorite trope: villains the viewer can sympathize with. Also, both of the movies had these environmental undertones that I LOVED (Even before I knew I was bi I knew that I loved learning about animals and ecosystems... And now I am a Senior in college as an Environmental Science Major). Finally, speaking of being bi... Yeah looking back on my childhood it is clear that I found Manu EXTREMELY attractive, even if I didn't understand at the time...

    • @Scoobytopia
      @Scoobytopia  2 года назад +4

      Yeah, the one criticism I have for the ending is that they totally should have been doing it for the obvious reason and not the money. It just makes more sense with the rest of the message in the movie. It's a weird swerve and I understand why people don't like that part. The discussion of them being sympathetic villains would have been a lot stronger.

The theory is that the economy is so bad that they’re doing these schemes. Most housing/real estate, tourist spots, and businesses are failing or broken down, too. I remember watching this one A LOT when i was younger. I think i mostly liked Wiki-Tiki, really cool monster design with spitting fire balls and surfing on rock boards. I feel its pretty solid with visuals for dtv movie. I love gang's vacation looks.
    And tru, i forgot CGI in this one but the little tiki creatures look like from some old video game, and on the footage you really can notice moments where they don't really line that well with enviroment.
    I was made aware of the more problematic elements of this movie some time ago, and yeah, i feel it was kinda weird idea to have all this messaging the whole movie when also deciding to make a twist in the mystery. Like i feel this movie could get away with making a monster some another real estate dude because often some real estate owner is a monster but not often they focus on what this implies capitalism wise... or something.
    Tho, i guess they already did that with Monster of Mexico?
    I do agree noble cause would be better here. Because its really seems like they decided on twist ending without considering how this work with whole messaging of the movie.

    Sure money is a generic villain motive, but claiming that Hawaiians specifically would never go against their own is almost as problematic as having them do it. Every society and culture has people that get corrupted by greed and desire, that's human nature. The ending isn't perfect but I don't think it's offensive

    • @Scoobytopia
      @Scoobytopia  2 года назад +8

      I think the main source of any problems with the ending truly is the motive being money and not the obvious. The movie never suggests Manu needs money, only ever foreshadowing the obvious reason of doing it to protect the land, only to swerve as to not be so obvious. But sometimes being obvious is fine, and I think in this case would have worked better. The ending in general would make more sense if they were doing it for the actual reason they seemed to be originally. Them being the bad guys isn't a problem, doing it for money and the implications from that is questionable with them trying to get their own people to move away, but doing it for the obvious noble reasons just makes more thematic storytelling sense with what the movie had spent so much time building up.

    Manu as the bad guy was a good twist(IN MY OPPPINION)

    • @Scoobytopia
      @Scoobytopia  2 года назад +1

      I would say it could still use some work from a story/continuity perspective. While Manu as the villain could work, the movie never suggests he needs or wants money until the twist, not so much as a throwaway line, only ever foreshadowing doing it for his land and people. It makes the twist that it's all for money a surprise, but only because there was nothing to suggest that would be why, only that it was him. The entire movie up until then works to build a solid message about both colonialism and capitalism in a way that can make sense for a broader and younger audience with a great opportunity to shed light on the real things happening there, so for it to drop that at the last minute simply to not be so obvious feels like a cop out more than a successful diversion to surprise the viewer. (At least going by what the writer said describing the twist decision.) The weakness of the twist comes from not showing any need or motivation until the twist, and because of that is unable to humanize the choice when they never set it up to begin with. Even in the twist, it just vaguely suggests wanting an easier life and not that they were genuinely struggling in some way rather than suggesting it's rooted more deeply in real life problems caused by people from the outside like the mainlanders in the film. While it would be obvious for Manu to do it to protect his culture instead, the movie still pretty obviously telegraphs that it's him anyway, making the writing choice seem more for shock value at the cost of making sense with the entire rest of the movie and message right up until that point. If they had set up the ending even a little more, given it justification and centered on that kind of real life struggle, maybe it could be really solid. But that doesn't happen unfortunately so it comes off a little empty. Considering all of that, while it's just a Scooby-Doo movie and doesn't have to be fine cinema with how simple Scooby plots usually are, and thus expecting something deep out of a younger to all ages film would be too much, I would say the "they did it for the money" ending still doesn't fully hold up as it is in the final product and justifies at least some criticism on that front.

    I find it hard to believe that any one culture is devoid of greed and envy and that you can't have Hawaiian villains who want money simply for greed. However, I do not think this was the logical direction the writers should have taken in this particular instance. As you said, if he was doing it out of a need to protect the land or something, that would simply be better, thematically speaking.
    That CGI is horrendous lmao. I think the CG critic just enjoys looking fondly backwards at a time where such technologies were in it's infancy. There's a charm to them, I admit. I'm fascinated by early technology myself, though it's mostly computers, music players and cameras - especially of the Victorian variety. Early CGI can look insanely creepy. I mean, look up Polly Gone by Shelley Lake; it's essentially an early (1988) CGI shitpost and Shelley took advantage of the limitations of the tech at the time. Your critique of the poor CGI taking you out of the movie isn't unfounded. It sticks out like a sore thumb - all of it - and does not look like it belongs in the same universe let alone the same physical space on screen. It'd take me out, that's for sure, and I'm usually quite forgiving. Not enough for me to turn it off, of course, but enough to dampen my enjoyment a little. Movie runs less fluid, you know?

    • @Scoobytopia
      @Scoobytopia  2 года назад +4

      Yeah, in regards to the ending, the movie never even suggests or sets up that Manu needs money. Everything up until the twist suggests the obvious reason is his motive, but to avoid the obvious takes the swerve. Sometimes being obvious isn't a bad thing though, and in this case I think would have been fitting. I think this is ultimately the real reason behind anybody having an issue with the ending, including their portrayal as the bad guys. Even just plot-wise, I think it would hold up better had that change been made.
      As for the CG, I'm glad I'm finally not alone in finding it distracting! In the past when I brought it up in prior movies, people always say it's fine, and obviously the one guy that got really upset. But this movie in particular I think it's pretty egregious, especially the tiki robot dance at the end. They really feel like they are just placed on top of the image and don't belong in any of the environments. Not movie ruining for sure, but definitely a little distracting. Thankfully they aren't used very much.

    I remember watching this film as a kid and, being a kid, I didn't make the connection that Slater was the bad guy. That being said, I never had a problem with it. But as I think of it, had the motives changed to just drive away the Mainlanders, would Little Jim have been in on the scheme?

    • @Scoobytopia
      @Scoobytopia  2 года назад +4

      It's hard to say. I feel like he probably wouldn't be in on it, but would likely not be as hurt that his friends were behind it when it would align with his own feelings. He still helps the mainlander despite that, so he doesn't show any intent to actually harm them like the Wiki Tiki was doing, just that they shouldn't compete in something that wasn't meant for them, so Manu's actions may have gone too far for him to take part. I do think the ending would be stronger if Manu was doing it for a noble reason though, as the film never sets up or suggests he has money problems or any reason to do it for the money until the twist, only foreshadowing the obvious noble reason it swerves from doing. The film has such good themes that feed directly into Manu doing it for his people so much that him actually harming them for money just comes out of nowhere thematically, regardless. It's already so telegraphed that it's him that I don't think it would have been too obvious to go with, and would make for a stronger ending just in general.

    This one was always one of the lesser movies in the What's New branding for me. I had the VHS of it but actually saw it more on Cartoon Network cause they ran it a lot at least at one point but I remember not liking it as a kid as much as the previous one. Rewatching it for the review I gotta say yeah it's kinda the big insult thrown at a lot of these movies as it feels like the show at the time. Granted I don't think that's terrible as What's New is probably the best show for the older format before Mystery Incorporated changed everything but it's still a slight jab to make at a lot of these movies. I think this one just isn't as epic so to speak as the others especially Pirates or Lochness which despite having there issues to are movies that very much movies in terms of their scale even if they are STDVD. I do love the monster design and the fire breathe is cool but the monsters in the movie were never terribly exciting to watch. I can't speak for the ending but I am not shocked people had issue with it even if it is a somewhat creative ending it does kinda clash with the themes.

    • @Scoobytopia
      @Scoobytopia  2 года назад

      Yeah, Loch Ness and Pirates Ahoy were definitely my personal favorites of this era growing up because of how much stronger they were, which I still think holds true. The ending is something I at least understand the criticism for considering them doing it for the money is never really suggested or set up, whereas them doing it for the noble reason suggested does actually make sense, even if it's obvious. I think being obvious is fine sometimes if it's for good reason, which this would have been.

    Yes I would’ve made Manu and Snookie’s motives to keep the mainlanders out of the surfing contest. I think this could work like in Where’s My Mummy, where the supposed villain has a noble goal, and someone else (maybe Ruben the real estate agent, or the Mayor) serves as the “real” villain, despite technically being innocent. In the end, I could see Manu actually gaining some respect for the mainlanders after his defeat, as he would admire Daphne and Scooby’s surfing skills, and he would admit that maybe it’s not so bad for the mainlanders to compete after all, in exchange for Ruben taking his real estate plans elsewhere.

Don't get me wrong, I think Daphne is hot in this movie in both her regular clothes and her swimwear, always did have a major crush on her as a kid, and I love the flower in her hair throughout the movie, its a really nice and unique design instead of her usual headband, but again it's nice to see other characters getting fond over and it makes sense for Manu to be the one, the dude looks great and hot, I wish I had that kind of body.

    I am white and not qualified to speak on the subject, so of course I’m going to share my opinion because nobody asked for it. Take with grain of salt. (And I do welcome the thoughts of anyone of Pacific Islander descent, naturally, if you dissent with my interpretation.)
    That all said …
    I think the ending still works as a critique on colonialism and capitalism. It’s the capitalist system imposed on Hawaiian culture and the expensive commodification of their homeland that could, conceivably, lead even a native to desperate means in order to survive, and the real estate angle makes sense. As I understand it, due to the exoticization of the Hawaiian experience driving tourism and property demand, therefore skyrocketing the cost of living, many native Hawaiians are driven into poverty and are oftentimes forced to prostitute their culture to white tourists just to get by. Colonialist capitalism created an oppressive economical circumstance that drove our villain to find a way to thrive within the system imposed on him. Now, the movie stopped well short of properly portraying this, but some of the pieces are there.

    • @Scoobytopia
      @Scoobytopia  2 года назад +2

      At least as far as writing goes critically, I think the ending could use some work under any condition. The movie never suggests Manu needs or wants money until the twist, not so much as a throwaway line, only ever foreshadowing doing it for his land and people. (At least going by what the writer said describing the twist decision.) Manu being behind it isn't inherently a problem, the problem moreso comes from not showing any need or motivation until the twist, and because of that is unable to humanize the choice when they never set it up to begin with. Even in the twist, it just vaguely suggests wanting an easier life and not that they were genuinely struggling in some way rather than suggesting it's rooted more deeply in real life problems caused by people from the outside like the mainlanders in the film. One person from the culture I spoke to felt it was an issue on some level as it is in the movie because to a younger audience it could potentially suggest those there who seem to want to protect the land only really have selfish capitalistic intent rather than actually protecting their important traditions, which clearly goes against the movie's obvious message up until that twist and is harmful to the real people trying to do the same considering what's currently going on there now. Obviously the movie didn't have ill intent with the portrayal and is otherwise positive in representation so much that I doubt it would corrupt any young minds, but even in the context of the story the twist ending doesn't make sense, so the potential implications make it harder to defend when it's already weak. But that doesn't happen unfortunately. Considering all of that, while it's just a Scooby-Doo movie and doesn't have to be fine cinema with how simple Scooby plots usually are, and thus expecting something deep out of a younger to all ages film would be too much, I would say the "they did it for the money" ending still doesn't fully hold up as it is in the final product and justifies at least some criticism.

      It's got such good writing, animation, etc. Not sure if I'll be doing it or any of the others from that period any soon but I can definitely say it's one I love. Music of the Vampire is probably my other favorite from that time.

      @@Scoobytopia The plot twists were good and my fav like Velma being the monster twist. As well as having that scary and mystery that really love. Like it could pass as a later episode of Mysteries Incorporated.

      I'm gonna take a break from movies for at least a bit to space things out but it's definitely one I would consider getting to since it was one of my favorites when it came out. (I actually recently re-watched it!)

    Great video, I always thought this movie could do with better villains than Manu and Snooky. Perhaps they could've been the Red Herrings and they could've made traditional real estate developers be the villains. It would've been a funny twist to have the stereotypical bad guy be the bad guy but mislead the audience the entire time into believing the guilt of the locals.

    I always hear people talk about how when they were kids they had crushes on characters from the shows and movies they watched but I never had that. I only started having crushes on characters in the shows and movies I watched when I became a teenager (my first crush in a TV show ever was airi from the anime erased and my second was Dylan from modern family). So I feel kind of left out when people talk about there childhood crushes😂

    As an Indian, I find the idea that native Hawaiians would never disrespect their culture to be absurd. There are Indians who criticise other Indians for not being "Indian enough" because they were born & raised in America and spend the vast majority of their time in American culture. Manu & Snookie may be Hawaiians, but this stereotype of them having to act or feel a certain way because of their ethnicity is nonsense. A lot of people don't wanna acknowledge this, but the idea of not having "mainlanders" participate in the surfing contest is racist, imagine if there was a Golf competition (golf invented by whites) and they said only whites can participate, it's basically the same thing. I've found that the notion of only this culture can do this or that if you're a certain race, you need to act and believe this to be idiotic.

    the one cop without the hat who arrests manu and snookie looks like the late actor jack lord who played the original detective steve magarrett in the 1968-1980 hawaii five-0 series

      Yes! Definitely an intentional cameo slipped in like the Gilligan cameo. I was originally going to bring it up but the resemblance in execution wasn't quite strong enough to be worth a quick diversion that late in comparison to how obvious the poor late Gilligan is.
