    Really appreciated the extensive discussion of antisemitic stereotypes for this one- as a huge Scooby fan but also someone whose literal job is diversity/inclusion advisor, i find myself constantly grimacing when i show really old episodes of Scooby doo to my friends haha. Its good to be able to acknowledge and talk about the issues prevalent in these old shows while also being able to appreciate it- it prevents the same mistakes from being repeated and perpetuated!

      The thing is Scooby-Doo has jewish original made by Jewish people and Velma is canonically Jewish. So these characters definitely aren't supposed to be jews (in fact the majority of big nosed villains and trolls in media may have designs that had been used by bigots but to assume the characters are supposed to be jews that you need to hate is ironically sterieyrping then because the people who accuse producers of coding these characters are almost always the only ones coding by looking at them and immediately assuming they 100 percent are supposed to secretly be Jews. Meanwhile characters like Harley Quinn don't get called anti Jewish despite being actually Jewish)

      What do you think of the xenophobic portrayals of Slavic and eastern European people? Because they're seen as "white", their problematic depictions and calls for representation are ignored and slavs are brushed off as just racist people who don't want to see a black person or whatever.

    • @finland4ever55
      @finland4ever55 7 месяцев назад +1

      Scooby-Doo doo was made by Jews ans Velma is one too so I don't think they were trying to say that hate was right

      @@finland4ever55At the time Scooby-Doo was made, the stereotypical image of the Witch was so widespread and normalised that for most people the anti-semitic connection would be forgotten.
      However given that those anti-semitic stereotypes are still used against Jews, it's still good to be cognisant of the history behind the overlap, since it's not difficult for anti-semites to use the negative connotations.
      I'm not Jewish so it's not my place to say, but usually I see requests to move away from the ethnic features like the big nose and some will say the skin colour, since those are physical traits or exaggerated from common physical traits amongst Jewish demographics.

    • @TheSydnick
      @TheSydnick 7 месяцев назад +2

      Oh, I mean, I’m not here to really speak to the creators or anything like that. The antisemitic portrayal of witches wasn’t invented by the Scooby-Doo creators, for sure, but it certainly was perpetuated by them. All I’m saying is that it’s important now to acknowledge the roots of these portrayals so that understand why they’re problematic, and so we don’t keep using them. It’s why open conversation about it is important!

    Honestly, the Wilcox witch was the scariest classic villain for me as a kid (besides the ghost clown, of course). I would watch Scooby home videos constantly, and it was on the same vhs as the episode where Scooby, Shaggy, and Scrappy have a family reunion. I think one of the reasons this witch scared me so much is that the kids were in actual danger, if not from her, then from the mob who dunked Scooby. Furthermore, she was never truly unmasked (she is still wearing makeup as she is led away) leaving 3-5 year old me waiting for the shoe to drop on an actual reveal.
    I would suggest another episode for review, but all the ones that are actually scared me as a kid have already been done/been suggested.
    Thank you for your continued coverage of Scooby Doo and treating it as more than just a show for kids. All media has a right to be treated as worthy of discussion, especially kids' shows, because all media have something to say buried beneath their surfaces, even something with such an outrageous premise as "For spooky kids and a dog solving mysteries together."

    I grew up with all three episodes thanks to DVDs and re-runs. The first two definitely tricked me into thinking that zombies were the male version of witches because why else would I be seeing them paired up more than once? Shout-out to Zeke and Zeb for being one of my favorite villain slash ships.
    _To Switch a Witch_ was the scariest for me as a kid because of the way she kept popping up on screen. Even though I loved the episode, I always dreaded seeing her appear. Also, thank you for pointing out the lack of resemblance between the witch and Arlene; all these years I thought I was going crazy for not seeing it. To Arlene's secret identical twin sister who is not-so-identical and an unoriginal cheapskate and clearly not up-to-par in her historical knowledge (seriously, no ghost of an alleged witch from Salem is going to look like a Halloween witch; even _Hocus Pocus_ didn't go that extreme)!

      I haven't touched Zombie Island, Witch's Ghost, Alien Invaders or Cyber Chase in any way on their own so far. I don't currently plan on ever doing it as of now. Everyone and their talking dog has said everything there could ever be said for them more than I ever could, so it would be more redundant for me to spend time on than any other media of the franchise tbh. Witch's Ghost got a mention in the Americana video, but that kind of inclusion is probably the most they'll show up usually.

    I'm thinking the reason why the Ozark Witch costume is in the Coolsonian instead of the Swamp Witch is because the Zombie's (who's arguably more iconic than the witch herself) costume is displayed there too, and it counted for both of them. If the Swamp Witch costume isn't going to be brought to life, better to have a separate witch cameo than a displayed but missing half of a duo.

    The thing about Melissa Wilcox was that we never learn why the twins were separated in the first place! The parents appear to have been married and what other reason would they keep one and send the other off somewhere. That was a mystery I wondered about! Can't say I blame the other sister for wanting her fair share of the inheritence.

    i am so glad you brought up the antisemitic elements that witches often have! i feel like its often left unacknowledged, which is annoying to me as a jewish person. also somehow i didnt know about the hat thing! didnt think there was even more antisemitism i could learn about, but its the horrible gift that keeps on giving :']

    • @Scoobytopia

      The hat at least isn't considered as derivative as other parts anymore, but definitely surprising in how it did originally start there as everything became solidified!

      I really enjoy that episode! The entire first season of Scooby Doo and Scrappy is highly underrated with a lot of really solid episodes. As someone that enjoyed the original Westworld movie from a fairly young age, it's an episode I definitely appreciate doing a take on that setting. The villain himself is pretty strong among a group of pretty memorable and strong villains in general for that show.

    Top Scooby Doo show characters that almost got away with it
    10. A border police officer posed as an insane Doctor at the Shady Sanytarum . Stolen gold transported as dead patients in an ambulance only to be wrapped in bread. Such a crazy ad well executed plan
    9. Katazuma and the Mayan Mayhem . Besides posing as archeologists , they are the ones that trapped the gang inside the pyramid so kudos for effort.
    8. The faceless Zombie was a robot and Dally was a gorilla . He had the balls to steal with the police and from the police.
    7.The mayor tried to sell as many houses he can to build a road. The irony here is that today they do get away with it. After the 10000 wats ghost was captured i didnt expect the mayor to be the villain.
