I had a friend do this to me. I thought we were on good terms. He bought something for someone, and I asked him who it was for and he said "don't worry about it." It didn't change our friendship, but it did tell me to stop putting whatever effort I was putting. I thought that was such a douchey thing to say, but it's how he felt and he unconsciously let me know what he thought of me.
I feel like with the first part about the friend feeling sad and wanting to talk someone and then say never mind, sometimes its not for attention. Sometimes its hard to tell someone (even ur friends) about a hard time ur going through. There are people out there that try to reach for help but inly end up doing so halfway. They ask for help and then they change their mind for fear of the friend thinking of them poorly such as wanting to get attention or for fear that they wont really care,etc. The point is, its not always easy to talk to people about some problems. This was kinda disappointing tbh.
