In the original script humans we're supposed to be computing power, not batteries.
The Matrix was supposed to literally run on human brains as a cluster of CPUs.
But then some genius figured people would be too stupid to understand that, so they changed it to batteries.
Which by the way is a total nonsense, you have 1000s of better ways to power your robot society before harnessing the bodily heat of a bald ape.
