In the original script humans we're supposed to be computing power, not batteries. The Matrix was supposed to literally run on human brains as a cluster of CPUs. But then some genius figured people would be too stupid to understand that, so they changed it to batteries. Which by the way is a total nonsense, you have 1000s of better ways to power your robot society before harnessing the bodily heat of a bald ape.

Humans hit the final red button thinking that would be the end and the machines said, "Think again mfers," and literally rounded them all up and started milking them. How would the CPU thing be explained? The machines could just create additional or more advanced CPUs if they needed computing power. Is there a shortage of silicon for chips? Do the insanely smart machines not know how to make more advanced chip arcitecture? Why would using humans as a cluster of CPUs be useful or necessary to them? Is it just a "screw it throw another stick of RAM in there just cause"? If so, that doesn't sound better than the actual canon.
