    For the ambrosia: skip the cottage cheese and jello, double the marshmallows, use pineapple chunks instead of crushed, add chopped maraschino cherries and drain and pat dry all the fruit. Too much juice will deflate the whipped cream into a soupy mess, the jello overpowers the flavors of the other fruit, and the acidity makes it harder for the whipped cream to stay fluffy. The dish is supposed to be mostly marshmallows, though.

    • @JamesLeigh28

      It's funny that this abomination somehow ended up being called ambrosia in the US.
      Ambrosia is also a dessert originating from 18th century Portugal, and really traditional in the south of Brazil, made from a curdly mix of eggs, sugar and milk.

      I can't believe there were no jarred cherries. I absolutely love ambrosia salad. It is so freaking good. Whenever I've had it or made it, there is very minimal liquid. This recipe was an abomination. I live in Maryland (have all my life) and know nothing about its origin. I just remember it would be around at cookouts, pool parties, get togethers growing up. The taste is so nostalgic to me.

    • @cbirdman

      @@r09d98 Ambrosia is what the ancient Greeks call the food or drink of the gods. There are many cultures that have used its name for different types of food and drink. There is no basis for what it is, so it could literally be anything.

I'm not a huge fan of the individual ingredients, though to be fair I don't know what all she puts in it, and I don't ask, but, together, this "salad" sends my taste buds into orbit. She always sends me home with any leftovers and it doesn't last long, I can't help it.

  • @Aneres225
    @Aneres225 Месяц назад +14

    Down south, we grow up with sweet tea in our bottles so....too sweet is very subjective. ambrosia is a staple at every Basement Baptist potluck and ours always had marishino cherries and is more fluffy than runny. Or you can buy it premade at the grocery store deli counter. and that chicken recipe is also very similar to a lot of things we eat too! There's always a chicken crockpot pasta or dip made with similar ingredients at the potluck too. I was thinking it sounded delicious haha.

    • @josephwest124
      @josephwest124 Месяц назад +4

      @@kristinrush I don't believe that for a second. I've never seen a GOOD recipe that cannot be reduced proportionately. If a recipe cannot be reduced and retain its taste or consistency, then it's a bad recipe (or the cook lacks the necessary skills). I will grant there may be cases where a recipe requires a whole egg for 4 portions and you can't really break that down or a recipe uses a 1/4 tsp of a spice or flavoring for 8 servings (trying to get 1/32 tsp is pretty close to impossible--so you just add the proverbial "dash" or "splash"), but, again, it's a poor cook who can't find some workaround in order to reduce a recipe to fit their needs.

    I grew up with your "orange jello salad" (orange pineapple whip in my household) and these are the differences in recipes: the marshmallows are not needed at all (I have never added and would never add), drain your canned fruit (it looked far too wet), cut the amount of cottage cheese in half (it's mostly there for texture), and use half the amount of jello powder.
    I myself am not a huge fan, but my brothers request it every year.

    We never added the additional cottage cheese to our ambrosia, which clearly does not allow it to set. Too much moisture. Ours set firm, so it was a fluffy jello with fruit and marshmallows. It's pure picnic food for eating outside. Pistachio pudding or lime jello works better than orange.

    The word "salad" comes from the French "salade", which is an abbreviated form of the earlier Latin "herba salata". Salt is associated with salad because vegetables were seasoned with brine (a solution of salt in water) or salty oil-and-vinegar dressings during Roman times.

We make a few trays of jello (normally strawberry, orange, and a wild card one depending on the occasion), cut it up into 3/4" cubes, fold in some whipped cream, cut fruit, marshmallows. It's delicious and not too sweet because we usually use low sugar stuff and omit sugar in the whipped cream.

    Jello salad is southern now??? 😮
    I grew up in MN and there was at least one Jello salad every holiday meal.

    My sister makes what we call “orange fluff” similar to that fruit ‘salad’ that you made but it’s a lot fluffier and less soupy than that one 🥴 it’s actually a really tasty light desert when done well but I get why it’s off putting to some

    For the meatloaf monstrosity just use a skull cake pan to make your favorite meatloaf. For the eyes only takes one , cut in half hard boiled egg. Add ketchup 'blood' and its horrifying af. BUT, it will taste good.

    I’m from the south but had a strict but bougie mom who did not let her extremely ADHD kid have much sugar. To be fair I became a demon who literally bounced off walls screaming boula boula boula. But when I went to my grandmas I got to experience the joys of jello concoctions and some were better than others. As an adult the only one I really loved my ex’s mom made. It used jello, pudding, cool whip and mandarin oranges & I liked it enough I wanted to try and make an elevated version. Instead of cool whip, freshly whipped cream. Sub a homemade pudding instead of insant pudding, & maybe some salt to offset all the sweetness. I’ve never made it tho bc I gave up sugar, but I think it’d be pretty fire.

    my mom has made that exact orange jello 'salad' my whole life :D So it is a midwestern 80s (or earlier) thing, not a recent tiktok monstrosity. I didn't like it as a kid because I didn't like cottage cheese, but I actually kinda like it now. I will say her version only used one box of jello powder, and no marshmallows, so it was probably way less cloyingly sweet.

      I was going to say 3 boxes is overkill. My family skips the pineapple and marshmallows too.

    I have never seen an ambrosia that was made in that manner. Its always closer to the alton brown version

    Fellow Black Southerners in the comments, have y’all ever made or had that cursed “salad” at the end?
    1) If you made it, who raised you??? and/or 2) if you had it what was the function where it was served? I got questions 😭

    Where im from in the midwest we too have ambrosia salad, but this was not our recipe lol. Ill be skipping this one and sticking with the traditional usual my family and communities always made, one container of cool whip, sour cream, marshmellows, chunky pinapple, maraschino cherries, and mandarin oranges all drained and pat dry, and sweetened coconut flakes with chopped pecans as a garnish. All mixed together, its fluffy, sweet (but the sour cream helps to tone it down a little), and great in small portions with a big hearty potluck. I tried an south easterners attempt at ambrosia salad a few months back and as a Midwesterner he looked to me for approval and i accidentally made a face and had to tell him "you tried, its just... Not what i grew up with. But the kids love it!" I did not mean to destroy his dreams of making a midwestern approved ambrosia, but alas. Maybe next time ill just bring it to the cook out 😂 we do have a different version, called watergate fluff salad (different type of ambrosia but with pudding mix, think pistachio) thats almost the same minus the sour cream, butnits only a single pack of oudding mix and not THREE. We also do like our jello based salads... Really we'll make anything into a "salad" if you leave us alone in a room long enough 😂

    We have a version of ambrosia in New Zealand - usually a combination of fresh whipped cream, yoghurt (I usually use a raspberry), chocolate shavings, fruit (e.g. summer berries), and marshmallows. American ambrosia sounds like an abomination.
