- Using Rufus (Easy Way) How to Create a Windows 8 (8.1) Bootable USB Flash Drive
1) Download Rufus
rufus.akeo.ie/
2) Download a copy of Windows 8.1 or 8 (I downloaded my copy from DreamSpark)
3) Open the executable file of Rufus
4) Plug in your USB Flash Drive (Back-up any important files on that USB Flash Drive). We will format the Flash Drive
5) You can leave the settings as default
6) Click the button that opens an ISO
7) Find the ISO of the Windows 8.1 file
8) The settings will change corresponding to the ISO file (in this case, Windows 8.1)
9) The ISO file will finish being set into the USB within 15 minutes or so
10) After Rufus finishes setting the USB Flash Drive with Windows 8.1, then safely eject your USB Flash Drive
11) When restarting your computer, press F2, F8, or F10 to get into the utility set-up to change the Boot Order
12) Change the Boot Order so that USB Drive is at the top of the list, so that USB Flash Drive will have priority boot order than the Hard Drive
13) Press a key to boot on a USB Flash Drive with Windows 8.1
14) Set-up runs normally. It works!
15) I install Windows 8.1 successfully

Your video solved a problem that had me stumped for several days. Rufus detected a software mismatch between the ISO and some extensions that Rufus had available. It offered to download compatible extensions. Voila! Problem solved.

I had even more icons than you on my desktop,..So to clean things up a bit, i made a folder & named it 'All My Desktop Icons' & shoved them all in there...I can now see my wallpaper! :)

Yes, you'll be able to do that, just reformat it. After you're done with the ISO, plug it into any computer, open up the flash drive's files, right click on it, and reformat it back to default settings.

Hi just wanted to ask when I downloaded the window 8.1 at Microsoft website. I'm sure download the 32bit after following the steps. When I try this to my laptop it's detects 64 bit I need help thanks.
6 years on and it helped me. I have a question though. I finished and got to the new install from the usb, did the set up and saved it. How long until after the windows set up should it take to start up as normal? ve been sat here for like 20 mins with a blue screen and the mouse pointer. Please if you could respond thank you

no it is probably that you have a normal usb and windows requires a way to high amount of read and write speeds. that's why only windows to go usb sticks with a very high price work MOSTLY i tried it with a normal usb it literately takes 4 hours to boot... at least

That Rufus part takes about 7- 10 Min With a 3.0 USB ;) FYI
did you do anything previous to the video? or is everything exactly the way you did it?
there might be one complication that I and other people have probably run into. make sure the boot order you use is legacy which can be enabled in the system configuration.
You mentioned that you had to clear your USB in order to set this as a bootable drive, would that mean that after I've set everything up I could load additional files onto the drive, or would I only be able to have my windows 8 ISO?

Hi there, after you move the "USB" thingy up in the settings, do you only open your computer and the first thing that'll show up is the Windows Installation? And after, do you have to move the "USB" option back to the third position or it moves it back automatically? Thanks.

Rufus is very nice, setting on USB needed ca. 15 min, so it should work now.

why did you use custom instead of upgrade?im doing it now and im deciding if custom or upgrade,i will choose custom bcause thats what you did in the video, i will also select drive 0 partition 2:windows7_os 252.9gb 193.5gb primary.

What caused the file system setting to change from FAT32 to NTFS? Was it the ISO file or the way the USB drive itself was formatted?
Most importantly, does it really matter which file system for the USB drive is used?

i had a windoews 8 iso file and heard about rufus so about 2 hrs ago i gave it a shot,rufus did real well and i thought i was in the clear but a red mesage came up saying that the program cannot work with rufus so i dont know what has changed in my windows vista i cant seem to connect with anyone through rufus,why im doing this is i purchased a refurb dell desktop from ebay or newegg 6 months back with windows 7 home premium and somehow the harddrive came up missin,ive been try to get a answer about the product key and install on different desktop...cant get no further then Microsoft acknowledging my purchase does any of this make sense people
Hi, i have a laptop with W8.1 that need to been repair..dont have the cd/usb recovery, but to creat one usb recovery have to dl and use the rufus to make the usb bootable, right? Can i do that, using the rufus and turn usb bootloader, on a laptop with ubuntu? Or only can do that on a PC with windows? And is a problem using a usb pen very bigger, like wit 64GB? someone say that is better to use a smaller usb to avoid any conflict with the BIOS.. how much space need to create a W8.1 bootloader usb? 8GB is enought? is possible usind a micro SD or SD card on a SD to usb adapter?
Could i do this onto a new computer? (Do these things in my old computer then take the USB to the new one and install?)
