When you purchase top-tier games for portable hardware you should accept and be prepared for a degradation in quality. The good thing though is that the "degradation" is only noticeable for people obsessing over detail. Otherwise playing AAA games on the Switch Lite feels like a real treat, because holding "so much power" in the palm of your hands does feel special in its own way. DOOM/Eternal feels special on the Switch Lite. Witcher 3 feels special on the Switch Lite. No Man's Sky feels special on the Switch Lite. Most switch ports are like a proof-of-concept demonstration that games can be optimized to run on a very limited system and that is very good. This shows which devs actually have skills and the diligence to optimize their games. But yes I agree. Better to use something like the Steam Deck for 3rd party games like NMS. Things are looking good tho if the new switch successor will have backwards compatibility because these ports will be running better on it and new ports from other 3rd parties might be considered.

A living universe? Each planet has a very low amount of diversity both in terms of Flora and fauna. Planetary terrain also has very low diversity. For having a procedural engine, so many of the planets are similar.

The switch can be a underrated power house when games are made for it, I mean the fact it can play games like Hogwarts and The Witcher should show that Nintendo if they are willing to make a hand held as bulky as the Steam Deck, I have to wonder how thier games would be yes the deck doesn’t last as long unplugged but if Nintendo were to make a more ‘powerful version’ and explain it can only last so long without a charge or even make extended external Battery packs many would buy it I think.

I have a Nintendo Switch and one thing one has to always remember, it is a tablet, and now a 10 year old tablet. I don't doubt that if No Man's Sky continues to become more complex it'll eventually outgrow the Switch, and perhaps not appear again until the next Nintendo console. There are many games I would never buy on the switch because that game requires a lot of CPU and GPU . There are thousands of great games for the Switch and I'm going to stick to those, I don't know that I would ever get No Man's Sky on the Switch. I can't believe the switch has lasted 10 years, and I've really enjoyed it all this time as a mobile platform tablet that happens to connect to a TV. No, it didn't. Time for some realism. I've played NMS on Switch for over 200 hours. I installed and played 5.0 for about an hour. These are my observations:
    Bad things:
    - No Switch trailer for Worlds (Correct me if I'm wrong), because they're aware of how terrible the game would look in comparison.
    - I was playing for less than an hour, and the game crashed while just walking around. I wasn't near any crazy bases or anything complex. Welcome to playing on the Switch.
    - When shooting the mining lazer, it still shoots large squares for a few seconds until the graphical effect loads.
    - My science terminal is still broken, blocking progress. Two major expedition updates, and they still haven't fixed this. Either they're ignoring it, or they don't even know about it.
    - The graphics update is very minor. There's maybe a 10% improvement. E.g. I'm on an ice planet, and it looks NOTHING like what they show in the trailer. Other planets look similar, including a paradise planet I visited.
    - I fell through the terrain on my Pilgrim exo-craft multiple times (a bug that's been happening for over a year)
    - There are waves in tiny pools of water not connected to the ocean or lake, because the game says "bodies of water have waves now." Sloppy design.
    - My Pilgrim wheels still twitch frantically when I launch it into the air off a ramp, another long-time bug.
    - The flashlight still blows out what you're looking up when you're up close to it, instead of switching down to a lower intensity of brightness.
    - The new waves look very unrealistic. They're basically just a uniform save effect across all the water. The much lower tech waves on Ys Lacrimosa of Dana look more realistic from a distance, and they're just two textures overlapping.
    - You still can't auto-craft when installing new tech, even if you have the materials.
    - I'm noticing a new bug when I tried to build the new Aquatic landing tech (why do we even need new tech?) when the inventory icon flashes to prompt you to build the required ingredients for the new tech, it seems to stick around.
    - The surface of water still looks crap on Switch, almost like it's a ground surface, especially from far away. It's just wavy up-close, but it's too uniformly wavy to look realistic. And I see none of the reflections shown in the trailer.
    - I'm not seeing the hazardous flora changes I've seen in videos from other platforms. Not sure why.
    - Still get annoying "landing area is not clear" as the game takes 5+ seconds to load the terrain underneath the starship when trying to land. It should instead accept your input, hover until the terrain loads, then land you you automatically like it does on designated landing zones.
    - Underwater still looks bad.
    - The Nautilon exocraft doesn't disturb the surface of the water, or under the water, properly.
    - The title screen, before transitioning to the loading screen, still shows names of the systems, instead of only showing lights as it should.
    - When riding my Pilgrim, the camera still clips below the terrain as I ride it.
    - When accessing the + menu (the log), it still loops the sounds that were being made before pausing. So if it's an exo-craft, it repeats the droning of it, annoyingly.
    - The fire and smoke plume from damaged machinery on planets doesn't seem to interact with the wind.
    - So many words look barren and lifeless. This is a Switch issue. It seems better on PC.
    - Photomode still changes what I was looking at. So I'll go to take a screenshot, and what I saw will change significantly, looking worse.
    - On a paradise planet, while riding around in the hovercraft, it only shows the terrain, not the grass. Grass pops-in only when I get out on foot, and it about 4 seconds to do that, which looks terrible. The grass doesn't even look good. Meanwhile, Breath of the Wild always has grass, and you can interact with it (burn it, chop it, and it sweys in wind).
    Good things:
    - We can FINALLY shoot asteroids further away, instead of shooting them and nothing happening until we're close.
    - Landing on water is nice, but should have been in-game at launch or years ago.
    - Flying a ship above the water disturbs the water. Doesn't look as good as on the trailer, but it's better than no interaction like it was before.
    - Waves during storms look good. Much more dramatic than when there's no storm
    - The new clouds look better, but they're about 10% of what you see on the trailer. The main difference I notice is there are two layers of clouds, upper and lower atmosphere. It's not very realistic, but it looks better.
    - You can interact with landed NPC ship pilots. I've never seen any of them get out before. Not sure when they patched that, or if that was a bug.
    - You can see space stations from planets now. Never noticed that before. Maybe it came after the space station update, I haven't played much since then.
    - The stary sky seems better. I remember it looking much more flat and lifeless before.
    - The sky from planet surface look really nice with the new colours.
    - It's still a good looking game, and there are moments where I notice the beauty of it. If you're happy flying around just looking at stuff
Again, the developers have focused on more "tech p*rn," instead of focusing on things meaningful to gameplay. And Switch players benefit much less from the update, but get nothing really meaningful to compensate. We're still the neglected step-children, yet we paid the same price as the other platforms.
The game is so similar to how it was to the last patch, if I hadn't seen the new trailer and all the commotion about it, the changes are so minor on the Switch, I'd have barely noticed the differences.
I'm left thinking, "a minor graphics boost, yet still nothing to do." This update re-affirms my decision to stop playing the game. I'll check out the expedition, but that's about it. At this point I'm not really playing because I want to, but to analyse the design changes. I have no excitement for the 5.0 update.
I want to play a game like NMS, and I even want to enjoy NMS, but I get frustrated whenever I try to on Switch because the developers don't seem to give a damn about Switch players. This is why I say the Switch port is bad--lack of support. I keep returning, because I want to like it and find a reason to keep playing.
The game looks SO MUCH BETTER on PC, and I can understand why people like roaming around in it.
Meanwhile, Tears of the Kingdom looks amazing on Switch.
If you have not played Breath of the Wild and Tears of the Kingdom, I recommend those instead.
If you play NMS on other platforms and Switch had cross play, like Witcher 3 or Divinity, I'd recommend it for portable play. It does not.
It should be sold for much less on switch, and come with a consumer notice saying you should expect different play, and what features are missing. It does not.
