Knife FAIL Restoration [Too Much Rust]

- This restoration ended before it really started. The old antique knife was just too much rusted, so I couldn't do anything at this point. In some places the old steel broke off and in other places the metal was already so thin that it could not have been used. In this restoration it was planned that the handle should be made of ebony and purple heart and the color on the blade should be extended, furthermore "Forgotten Shine Restoration" should be engraved with a laser.

In this restoration video I can unfortunately not show many craft processes, only the derusting I show. After that I had to stop the project because the old knife was too damaged by rust. But you can see exactly the derusting and detailed my plan what I wanted to do with the knife.

Can't blame you for noping out of this restoration. As badly gone as that knife is, it might be easier to just reforge it into a new knife made of old metal.
Im pretty sure this is a central european "bauernwehr" knife. Its from around the 15th c and the best thing you can do is leave it as is.
Well, the plan sounds really good, and the kids hope turtle brush feels better.

I'm just gonna throw it out there, were you thinking that trying to build it up with weld would burn it up? 'Cause that'd be the only other thing you coulda done. I really like seeing the fails, it shows that sometimes, in spite of your best efforts, it don't go your way. Thanks for the video.

Yeah repairing this wouldn't be much different from just making a new knife

I'm sad to hear the news you probably did not have the tools or techniques like welding to give it a better life but I'm glad you tried 😢(love the turtle edit)
You could collect some unsalvagable knives and then make damascus out of them (or make a collab with blacksmith to make damascus), and after that make a knife out of that damascus.
Still restored, just more of a damage over time kinda weapon

I am curious what actually happens to the items that can't be restored? Can they be melted down into something else? Turned into eclectic art pieces?
I also don't know what I'm going to do with the old knife yet....🐢
They could always be sacrificial scrap metal for electrolysis

Yeah, sometimes a project can be a bust. If you ever need a tool to do a restore on I have an old leather punching?canvas punching tool? It's been in the family for well over a century now and could use a restore.
The knife doesn't have to stay the same size or shape. Remove the thinnest parts and make a small blade.
You should have made a new one 😅

I think you could make a steak knife out of that, and you can fill the pits by spot welding I think. But maybe I got the wrong idea.
I don't think the knife can be repaired because it is very worn and rusty. Therefore, the decision to fail the restoration process is correct and in place

I've seen a video before where they took a discount store knife and upgraded it. Maybe don't let the design go to waste, find the cheapest knife you can and give it a makeover.
