I found this knife from japan recycle shop for 5$. I think it is easy to restore, but it's not like that. This knife is made from harden steel, so take a lot time to make it sharp. However I really love this knife after the restoration.
I hope you find something useful & enjoy this video!
I am happy to receive your feedback, advice, suggestions to improve myself.
!!! I apologize for the mistake if I have made in this restoration !!!

The handle alone deserves its own video! The water fountain "method" was simply phenomenal. I would have never thought about it.
Thanks for the video. I loved it. 😍😍😍😍😍
Fun fact: The video isn't actually sped up, he just puts all of his points into speed.

That's superb craftsmanship. Most of us would stop doing anything to an old knife so much rusted. Apart from the extreme sharpness, all little details are taken care of. Keep on and let us see more of your skills!
Greatly appreciate your use of simpler machinery and far less obtrusive reacting agents. I'd say you're closer to pure craftsmanship than most others. Thanks
obtrusive? Do you mean abrasive?
The moral of the story is that a really good knife can turn an old tshirt into yummy sushi rolls. Food hunger solved.
How inspiring 😭
Thank you for doing different things outside of hand drills.

I was thinking the whole time that a sandblaster would cut your time by 75%, but your diligence in doing a job well done is incredible. Hats off to you sir.
I think the point is to get the pitting out and refinish the blade without losing the original profile.
Clean video no soundtrack or music just the sound of tools .. you are legend 🙌
Sound is fantastic. I like the sharpness demonstrations after he’s finished.

This is an incredibly excellent and patient piece of work! Incredible sharpness! Fascinating to watch and I'll defo be on the look out for a Japanese Chef's knife to restore! Thank you!
Very nice! This restoration uses items that most of us would have in our workshops.

Just minutes, but behind them was a hard work that lasted for hours and days
The original craftsman would be honored .
Very nice work. Amazing how cleanly that finger came off, and I hope the reattachment takes.
I was like, fingers man, fingers....
Nice refurbishing. Why did you polish one side to mirror finish and leave the other side with pits? If you would have finished both sides equally, that would have made this project superb! Thumbs Up!
@Cosine Single bevel blades normally have a hollow grind on the back side to prevent sticking.
This sounds like the biggest boomer ever
@@kaitf3469 how
I think the pits are too deep and grinding them smooth will compromise the edge metal. The knife is single bevel. Usually harder material which is the edge material is the flatter side. The one with the bevel is the softer metal.
@Cosine Only if had a hammered finish to begin with. In general, this is a deba knife, not be used for general cutting but for breaking down big fish and bones. I seriously doubt that it was hammered in the first place. Because that wouldn't make any sense.
Tylertube would be loving the knife on paper action after the restoration!
I admire you in taking the time to restore a rusty knife...(don't know if it is worth it, because most of the name brand Japanese knife would have brand name on the knife blade). I made a bushcraft knife out of my lawnmower blade that has seen the end of its life three years ago. Due to it is a soft steel, I had to go thru the hardening/tempering process to get the proper hardness. It was an experimental, trial run, and did not expect anything good out of this, just for fun and learn something out of it. The end result is a working bushcraft knife, which I got great satisfaction out of the whole process. Good job...
Great look

This guy's speed is amazing!
Two things in this video are genius:
1. Turning the pillar drill into a custom lathe. 2. The constant water feed onto the wet stone.
Fair play, genius 👏
I am glad you didn’t just asspull called this a japanese knife but actually retained the hollow grind on the back and the single bevel. Really good work with a limited set of tools. Though I highly doubt it was originally a 5 dollar knife when it was new. Still. It really is a renovation and a fine work.

An exceptional job. A great deal of labour and expertise. Amazing job on the handle too. You could have done a Rockwell Hardness test on the tang near the blade. Would be interesting. Very heavy material used. What kind of wood. Johobba? (sp)

Wow a Restoration video where it was ACTUALLY restored ! Good work
I searched a lot for a perfect camping knife so that I can do multiple tasks with a single knife, and in the end, I found one.
Lovely sharp blade and just fits my hand. It makes my outdoor camping work easy and perfect. I bought it from Almazan Knives.
The job was well done, just a doubt: One side of the knife was a mirror, however the other side is still with rust lees, why didn't it leave the same?
Thats my concern to, maybe because it took him too much time just in 1 side thats why there will be a part two of these where he will make the other side mirror shine too
When you normally sharpen it next time, you would grind it from the rusty edge.

WOW.. from rust to mirror... amazing!
I really wish I could get my knives that sharp. Good piece of work.
Very nice restoration. But why you polished just one side of the blade? The other side is not clean and polished.
Because the knife is a one sided bever.
Japanese knives generally have a one sided bevel, meaning that only one side of the edge is angled and the other is flat to the rest of the knife, whereas western knives have bevels on both sides
@@gondolajesus4864 I didn't mean why he didn't shape the other side. I said why he didn't clean it. Other side is like mirror and the other one remained unclean
@@gondolajesus4864 actually not just flat but a slightly hollowed on the other side. He even hollowed it out a slight bit which is when this video really caught my attention. He really knew what he was doing.
@@moya9450 he tried to retain the hollow grind on the “flat” side as much as he tried to. He did a good job imo
Watched this 18 minute long video at 5 percent, died right when it ended. Thank you for holding the video iPad. Btw I said this when my iPad charged again lol
True craftsmanship.
Beautiful work and satisfying to watch.
Question: what happened to the knife? Is it up for sale? Thank you
11:54 Holy moly! This is smart.
Yes it is, but i think that it is a bit too much water you want to build up a slurry on the stone and dont want to wash it all away
A few things:
That is the sharpest knife I've ever seen, and I've watched A LOT of these types of videos. "Worlds Sharpest Diarrhea Kitchen Knife" doesn't have crap on this one.
You could perform surgery with that thing.
How long does something like that retain it's edge?
@CoffeeSwirls Girl I've never seen another one of those videos where the knife that has been sharpened cuts such thin slivers in the way this one has.
If you have another example, I sure would love to see it.
@CoffeeSwirls Girl Congratulations, you have just won an internet argument, which is an outstanding feat that not very many can say for themselves.
I admit defeat, you have indeed shown me a sharper knife than this one.

Bruh why didnt you smooth out the back of the knife like the front?
because he did not want to destroy the concave on the backside. If it is flat, the knive is practically ruined.
That so incredible awesome how you restored that Japanese Rusty knife it looks like a brand new hand made japanese chef knife
super brand new knife no industry can make knife like this today excellent job and good luck whatever you do and thank you very much
Gear show, where do you find these knives, I've been trying to find these everywhere so i can restore them like you.
This knife is from Japan.
Lol!
Great work on the knife. It makes us all want to do it (although that looked like a LOT of work sanding. Doesn't a belt sander heat it enough to change the temper?).
The proof's in the pudding...That SOB is sharp!
This is just absolutely incredible
Excellent. In these restoration videos, I would love to see a percentage split for the finished product of split between original parts vs new. For this one, as the blade was fully restored, I would say...it's pretty high on the original parts side. Also, an estimate of market value of restored artefact would be very interesting.
New knives are 200 bucks. So $5 vs $200.
