    Beautiful job - thanks for sharing! I, too, have a collection of antique mortise locks that I have built over the years by scavenging locksets from old doors I find in the garbage, renovations, yard sales, etc. I strip, repair and refinish the doors; some are re-used for period restoration jobs, and some I sell. Restoring the locksets is by far my favourite part of the whole process - there's something remarkably calming/meditative about it. The restored locks *usually* go back on the doors they came from; but sometimes there's an unusual, rare, or particularly beautiful lock that's just impossible to part with....

    • @randomrestoration6858
      @randomrestoration6858  2 года назад +2

      Thank you, Norman! Very cool, I recently restored my workshop door and gadzooks it was a lot more work than anticipated getting those dozen or so layers of paint off hahaha. Right, restoring old locks like these back to a condition where they're working silky smooth is greatly satisfying! Haha I can imagine there are some pretty cool ones you've stumbled across - There were so many gorgeous designs offered back in the day to choose from. Thank you very much for watching!

    Ooh! I've a couple lovely doorknobs/hinges from the 1910's that are highly detailed like that. One is copper and in good shape, the other is steel, I think, and very worn. But it just stuns me how much detail the put into something so mundane and hardly even looked at nowadays.

      @randomrestoration6858  2 года назад +2

      Sweet, there were so many gorgeous ornate sets like this back in the day! Right, hardware really isn't something you'd think would have much effort put into making it so ornate! Thanks again for watching, and enjoy your weekend!

    No wonder it's been a while, since your last video! I bet this restoration took a while but, damn, the result is spectacular, as usual. I've always found JB Weld was easier to work with than fiberglass filler and gives me smoother results right off the bat; I bet you spent one helluva long time sanding, given how smooth the lock looked. Well done, Sir!

    • @randomrestoration6858
      @randomrestoration6858  2 года назад +2

      Hahaha yeah this one was a bit more effort than usual but it was great fun being able to save this old set! I’ll have to give that a try in the future. I ended up using the fiberglass filler followed by a putty to fill in smaller defects - I left it a bit rougher than it could have been but wanted to match how it would have looked originally. I appreciate it, have a great weekend!

      Right, it's a gorgeous little lockset! I've seen a lot of older homes where the doors have been replaced with modern ones, or the hardware has been swapped with really generic modern hardware and I always question the sanity of whoever made the change haha. Thanks a lot for watching!

    Excelente Restauración! Hermosa cerradura y pomos de bronce trabajado a mano! Quedo Maravillosa! Una restauración hecha con cuidado, con delicadeza y respetando al cien por cien las particularidades de la pieza. Muy buen trabajo! En lo personal me fascina el bronce, su color rojizo, dorado, luminoso, brilloso, un metal noble! Es raro que no haya encontrado antes este canal. Voy a ver que otros vídeos hay en el canal, espero que sean tan bueno como este. Disfrute mucho de esta restauración, insisto, quedo maravillosa. Gracias por el vídeo.

    WOW! I think this lock set was at the end of it's potential recovery. The pitting is so deep, and so much rust. Is this the rustiest thing to date that you have restored? I give you a lot of credit for putting in the effort. You show that even when it looks beyond repair, there still may be a way to save it. I did love the design on the knobs and backplate. So unique.
    Are those farm animals I hear? 😃

    • @randomrestoration6858
      @randomrestoration6858  2 года назад +3

      Haha right, the pitting around the keyholes on both sides of the case is so deep that I'm surprised there were no rusted through areas. I think we can say this little lock had seen better days!
      Yeah this is definitely the rustiest item I've come across and restored so far. For perspective, an overnight soak in my rust remover removes all rust on all of my normal projects. This lock soaked for a week and still had to go back in for more which is how you know it's bad haha.
      I appreciate it, this one was great fun restore back to working condition!
      That is indeed what you're hearing, the like cruising up very near to where I work and provide me with some morale support haha. Thanks as always for watching, and have a great rest of your weekend!

    That was amazing work, sir! There was so much rust on there I began to wonder if you retrieved this poor thing from a shipwreck. Then I wondered if your pants were retrieved from the same shipwreck. ;)
    PS: I love Evaporust. I know a lot of folks love sandblasting, and there is a very relaxing element to seeing it done, but for jobs like this Evaporust will get into far more difficult to reach places. The angry goats approve.

    • @randomrestoration6858
      @randomrestoration6858  2 года назад +2

      Hahaha I cannot confirm or deny finding those sweet pants underwater in the near vicinity of the lock. It’d be a shame for them to go to waste haha.
      Yeah it’s great for getting in every nook and cranny that you wouldn’t be able to get to with a sandblaster, especially when it comes to things like screw holes, though as you mentioned it’s way more satisfying to watch sandblasting! Thanks a lot for watching, and have yourself a nice weekend!
