Pepper Grinder Restoration [Stabilize Wood, Nickelplating, ASMR]

  • As with (almost) every restoration I've done so far, I like to learn and try a new technique, in this restoration video it's "stabilizing wood". My object for this project is an old antique pepper mill. During the restoration I had to do the following: sanding, sandblasting, turning on the lathe, threading, filling, painting, stabilizing wood and much more. This video is not only to quickly show someone how something works, but also to relax and get away from it all! Relax while watching the video and enjoy what you see and hear. I recommend you put on headphones and listen closely at certain points (I've highlighted them), there are often very strange sounds.... Have fun!
    ------------------------------------------------------------
    ▶ What did I do ?! ◀
As always, I disassembled the old pepper mill to be able to restore it. Then I sandblasted the metal parts with corundum in the sandblasting cabin. Then I deburred the grinder with the files and smoothed the surface with wire attachments for the multitool. I remade the set screw that adjusts the coarseness of the pepper on the lathe because it was missing altogether. To protect these parts from rust in the future, I "boiled" them in vinegar. One sheet of the antique pepper mill I polished and nickel plated. The upper parts I painted with black lacquer. The wooden body I sanded and stabilized with cactus juice, this is done with a vacuum tank, vacuum pump and oven. At the end of the project, of course, I put all the parts back together.
    ------------------------------------------------------------
    ▶ Good to know ◀
I used the following tools: Screwdriver, pliers, wrench, water pump pliers, pin punch, multitool, screw clamp, hammer, magnetic bowl, tweezers, sandblasting cabinet, compressor, corundum as abrasive, files, key files, drill, center drill, lathe, sandpaper (various grits), lathe chisel, knurling tool, spray oil, tap external thread, hot plate, vinegar, glass container, tap internal thread, bench polisher, laboratory power supply, nickel, nickel electrolyte, base color, top coat, clear coat, wire, filler, putty knife, Cactus Juice, vacuum container, vacuum pump, aluminum foil, hardening furnace, linseed oil varnish, brass

I like the new sound sections. I watch these videos because I find the sounds and lack of music or talking to be calming. The sound-focused sections are awesome.

What a beautiful result!!! I'd LOVE to have a find like this one! I loved the 'fight' putting the metal parts into and out of the magnetic bowl - it was quite funny to me. I cheated and used a BlueTooth bass-boost speaker, but the sound sections slot in so well! I get SO relaxed watching any steel being turned, it soothes me incredibly. Kudos on another wonderful video, I look forward to your next one!

It's really difficult to say, the effort increases with each video, because I want to constantly improve the quality in sound and image! The actual restoration process would certainly take only 10% of the time... 🐢😅

Outstanding - your explanation, the restoration, the super clean and polished video and the perfectly balanced audio (asmr) - on another level! The little animated 🐢cute touch. I'm very impressed.
Did you also do the editing? How long did the whole project take you to complete?

Thank you so much for your great feedback! 🐢
Yes, I did everything on the video alone, I'm a "one-man team" so to speak.
Hard to say how many days went into it, because with every video the effort for sound and image is higher to achieve a nice result.
I'm very happy to read when it also comes to the viewers...

Wunderbar detailreiche Arbeit und deren filmische Umsetzung! Ich finde es gut, dass du zur Rostprophylaxe kochenden Essig nimmst und nicht "coldbluing". Das Metall erhält dadurch eine viel edlere Optik! Boiling the metal parts in vinegar makes a much nobler appearance than treating tham with cold bluing.
