@@robertcronin6603 I think Crosby did that because Neil left his wife while she was in critical condition. She soon died. Apparently David also liked Peggie as a friend. David is unfiltered and I like that.
Minus a few clunkers, The Looking Forward album is actually really great. Sometimes a record suffers with too much filler. Take the Eagles 'Long Road Out Of Eden' for instance. That's a bloated double album, with too much crap on it. Had it been cut down to a single album, with it's strongest material, folks might still be talking about it. 'Looking Forward' has some clunkers, and the Neil tunes sound like leftovers that didn't make his 'Silver and Gold' album, which came out I think months later. Those tracks are still great though!
I can't agree...he's written quite a few of their hits and he definitely has his own ground to stand on... Although he probably is my least favorite of the four - seems a bit full of himself.
I like the reference by Stills to "baby boomers don't own us." None of these guys and practically none of the bands (or the singles such as Dylan, Hendrix, Janis, Aretha)) in the 60s were made up of boomers. None of the Beatles or the Stones were boomers. They were part of the "Silent Generation" that for some reason decided not to be silent anymore. The boomers were born in '46 and after. The boomer contribution came with the bands of the '70s.
Boomers were their main audience, their meal ticket, the folks who allowed them to follow their musical dreams with gusto. That sort of mass audience/fan success is a tricky thing. They become a commodity, like a box of Captain Crunch cereal. I'm sure it's a real challenge to not be consumed by your consumers.
1999, Kurt Cobain had been dead for five years, grunge was still prominent, REM, Smashing Pumpkins. I was rock and roll conscious when CSN/CSNY made the two records worth absorbing but by the time of this interview these four guys were talking and living in some kind of musical wasteland of their own creation. No wonder they had to go to Iceland to find someone who would mic them up!
@@budnap47 Thankfully not much at all. Neil appreciated Cobain, and the grunge era in general. My references were just marking points in time. The groups I mentioned were very relevant while CSN/Y in the late 90's were pontificating from some sort of musical wilderness of their own creation, which sounded absurd to anyone with the awareness that rock music, like most things, is a constant progression. So in a nutshell, 1969 was long gone and CSNY, at the end of the last century, was a subject that no longer held much interest, I'm speculating with some confidence, for a large percentage of music fans.

Yep...Crosby said he badmouthed Neil's girlfriend and pissed him off for good...shame.

I felt American Dream, more so than Looking Forward, was a really strong record that did not get its due.

As if Stills wasn't even a part of it... Wow. He MADE that first album and much of Deja vu. Democracy... OK. Whatever.

Neil played CSN the batch of songs he had ready at the time and it was them who chose the ones they thought would fit CSNY best (Wiki).

Outside of the Stills material, I was very disappointed with this album. But I also always felt that the CSNY umbrella was a bit overhyped, anyway.
Stills is such a great guitar player though, to me, he’s always been the strength of the band.
They are four each other. No need to dissect this group, just enjoy them for who they are together.
