Exclusive, never before released- Buffalo Springfield 1986 Rehearsal Part 2

  • Опубликовано: 15 сен 2024
  • Part 2 of the 1986 Buffalo Springfield rehearsal catches the band winding down from Neil’s new song which was later to become Road of Plenty (live Crazy Horse version) before morphing into the better known studio version, Eldorado which you can see the band rehearsing in Part 1. Stephen’s new song follows this break in the action and will soon be released as (you guessed it) Part 3.
This is my favorite sequence because it gives a rare look of a band at work and shooting the shit w/ no one being overly self-conscious about a camera being in the room recording them. In other words, it’s real…. and, it is the founding members of the Buffalo Springfield chatting it up together for the last time. It was edited down to condense it w/o losing the vibe.
Enjoy my friends and fellow rock ’n rollers.

I love that Stephen is playing a Steinberger gl2ta with EMG humbuckers. In the 80’s they were not cheap, sold for about $2,500 back in 1986. Now if you find a used one they go for more than twice that. Trust Stephen Stills to have very cool guitar in his home studio!

    • @mindstash704
      @mindstash704  6 лет назад +9

I can totally relate. There was a joyous energy in the room- the band was having fun getting back together in the present, circa 1986, but through the window of time, we know that the potential wasn't realized which brings melancholy. There is a pathos in the passage of time- we have our memories but there is no going back. The present is fleeting and we don't know how the future will play out, including the time that we will cash in our bodies in the physical world, after which we don't know what future there may or may not be. For me, that is a motivator to live a full life and understand as much as I can about living the process in the 'now'.

Neil has said that he thinks it was his own fault, that everything was moving much too fast for him at the time.. Who knows ! But this is a clip of them all together, and the feelings are High, and there is magic in the air.. At least the spirit was caught on tape, and for that we are thankful.. Enjoy... Lary

This is so amazing. The COMPLETE original Springfield lineup, and they’re getting together just for the fun of it apparently. I haven’t seen all of the segments, but did they even play any Springfield songs that day? If they didn’t at all that makes it even more remarkable. Just jamming and hashing our new ideas. There’s a hierarchy based on success and money that goes Young, Stills, Furay, Palmer, and Martin.

That's a great compliment because that was what I was going for. I didn't interact w/ the band while taping, kept as a low of a profile as I could- didn't move around a lot, let it come to the camera. I was trained in doc to be a fly on the wall, but, back then, it was instinctual as well. Cameramen get lost inside the lens. There are moments when they all acknowledge a camera in the space, can't get around that, but there wer surprises on their faces, too, which happens to me when I'm focused on something and somebody comes up next to me from out of the blue. That's a good indicator that they were doing their thing for the most part.. I was already friends w/ Dewey and Bruce, up in Topanga, had struck up a friendship w/ Stephen, so they were used to me- Neil and Richie I had met in the rehearsal space from behind the camera. lolol Anyways, I don't want to overanalyze it to death, (he says after the fact) ;)

From my experience, there isn't a much of a talent gap between bands that have become famous and bands that are working the backwater circuits or experienced weekenders jamming at the pub other than how good and prolific the songwriting is and an established band has more time and resources available to refine their work once they get into the game. But at the heart of it, musicians jamming are musicians jamming.

Martin and Palmer were a tight rhythm section even then.

Richie Furay was really into it, so if you like him, you're in good company.

@@RjBenjamin353 and so am I not to mention the musicians in the room who are all older than me. I might be off here, you tell me, but the impression I got from Richie Furay while he was tuning his guitar, eschewing the help of the guitar tuner in the room, was that it was a cool, new thing. I'll check but I think he told Bruce, something to that effect. IDK, was it new, at the time?

As far as the, now, vintage equipment is concerned, I do know that Neil was getting off on some new software for the keyboard that Joe Vitale had gotten ahold of and was working with.

Neil still uses those tuners in 2020. He has 5 of them up on stage.

Thanks, ZT. Next up from the '86 rehearsal will be a look at the band working on the material that Stills brought to the party. It's blues based and was a good platform to show off Stephen's guitar playing skills although, it was so new that he didn't have the lyrics down and had to fill in the word and phrasing blanks w/ sounds... I have more interviews to draw from, as well, and am weaving them together into a mini-doc w/ some voiceover, by yours truly. In terms of original, footage I produced and directed the promotional video that Doug Collins and Stu Cooke used to show promoters after they had their 50th birthdays, (on the same day, no less) and decided to reform and tour as Creedence Clearwater Revisited w/ Elliot Easton who was formerly w/ the Cars and a couple of other crack musicians. They have some of their performances on youtube and I have been taken aback by some of the negative comments. ie w/o Fogerty, they are nothing. WTF?? These guys are all top notch musicians. I've got a few other sticks in the fire as well. I'll be at a Stephen Stills Judy Collins concert locally and am going to see if I can pull off my old friendship w/ Stephen to get some exclusive access. Would love to tape them singing Suite Judy Blue Eyes together.

It was on Gloria between Ventura Blvd and the 101. Right in the middle of things but hidden in plain sight. It's a dead-end w/ low traffic and houses on large lots ser-off from the street.

Does any1 know if all the original players are still w/the group & what r their names, also where r they 2day? In what state do they reside?
I was exposed 2 this group @ an early age, because of older siblings & cousins/. 2day I heard "For what it's worth & a lump of emotion swelled in my throat. I wonder if they realize they r part of the fabric that changed history.
