The first Manassas double album is the most underrated double album of all time, and is one of the most underrated albums from the '70's, period. The opening of the record with "Song Of Love" seamlessly joining into the following songs is like the Abbey Road medley; so much great music just weaving in and out of the speakers. I love this album. At least once a year I get it out and play it through a few times...an incredible achievement by all involved.
I put the first side on (that's what I planned on) and I have to hear all the way thru. Every time! I know every song and the sequences, but it never fails. I still(no pun intended) prefer the vinyl!
Stills and the band were on fire on this album. The first side is easily one of the best sides of an album from that entire era. Flawless, funky, loose and absolutely on the money from the first note. You can hear Stills really letting loose, his singing and his playing at their peak. Stunning music.
@@robertplummer1043 Love that track! Man, he was on a serious roll from like the last year of Springfield, into '69 and CSN and then the solo record run he had until '73 or so. I read an interview with Mitch Mitchell where he talked about Hendrix thinking of people to play with right before the Band of Gypsy's era and he said he always came back to Stills as like co-lead guitar and Steve Winwood on B3. Would've been heavy!
@@whatspadethinks this video fails to mention that 3 talented Burritos came over to Manassas. Byron Berline was a great veteran bluegrass violin player logging time with Bill Monroe and Dillard and Clark. If you want to know how good this guy was "Fallen Eagle" is what I recommend off their first lp. Also, while you may not remember Joe Lala, you may recall a band he cofounded, "Blues Image" and their hit, Ride Captain Ride
What are you talking about? He is MUCH APPRECIATED AND ACKNIWLEDGED! RRHF ,twice as Buffalo springfield and CSN As CSNY, had countless hits As solo artist and manassas As a multiinstrumentalist and one of greatest guitar player As a Songwriter Stephen is all over
He influenced so many different bands and so many genres and even though he was honored by the Rock n Roll Hall of Fame twice in one night (the only one) it is not enough. He deserves a third induction for his solo career (to include Manassas). Most people don’t realize that he paid for that band. All the band members salaries, traveling expenses, living expenses and they all lived together in Stills homes in England and Colorado. Chris Hillman finally had to sit him down and say, you are paying us too much. He lost his shirt on Manassas. He had to sell his home in England, which broke his heart. And his dream band disbanded because he could not afford it anymore. Atlantic records did not support that band and in fact provided no promotion of it. They wanted him back in CSNY. People always wonder what happened to him and why his music changed so much. He was never the same after Manassas disbanded. You never know what exactly happened but you can guess. He was still a major talent and had some great success coming, CSN 77 album, Southern Cross, etc. and then CSNY tours in 2000,2002 and 2006 and then in 2012 CSN had a career renaissance with a DVD and many sold out tours. Also the emergence of a blues band, The Rides. Any way you measure his career output it is immense and impressive. He is my all time favorite artist and I believe if he had been supported by Atlantic he would have achieved even more and be at the top of all the major talents of that era. He had it all!
Manassas was quite a collage of great musicians and recordings that still resonate with me. Much credit goes to Stephen Stills for getting these fine players together.
All of the folks discussed in the video above helped make some memorable music by letting bluegrass, country, western and in the case of Manassas, latin & blues, into their outlook. The Byrds played with this as well. Not japing like the Stones did, but actually letting a rock outlook get changed by country, western, bluegrass.
On the first Manassas tour Mr. Stills fronted the entire expense-from renting the concert halls-paying the band and all else-not to mention the travel. Everything.
I love pretty much everything Stephen Stills has ever done, but that first Manassas album is on a whole other level. The songwriting, the singing, the musicianship is just indescribably good. Easily in my top ten all time. Side 1, The Raven, is probably my favorite.
Easily one of the most diversified albums ever. Each side is pure gold. Stills was one of the greatest musical geniuses of the rock and roll era. Vastly underrated.
The first Manassas album was incredible. Nothing compares with the music, layout and flow of this double album. Great musicians combined with a great song writer and musician produced a one of a kind sound. They played their shows in the same way the album was laid out. Special band and a special album.
Crazy how underrated Manassas was and still is. I'm 45 and only stumbled upon them 5 years ago. Never heard anyone ever bring them up ever which is crazy considering how good that first album is. The live studio show that's on youtube is so great. Can't imagine how good it was to see them live.
Stills, one of the best voices ever. Only saw him live once in 79 after his return from the Caribbean. He had a few Reggae based tunes he had written awesome concert, ran over time wise. Kept running back to the speaker stacks comming back sniffling with the ocassional Oh Yea especially for the two encores.
I saw Manassas in concert at the Hollywood Bowl back in 1972. Someone in the audience yelled out "Bluebird" (Buffalo Springfield song). Stephen Stills replied "Bluebird done flew the coop"
Saw them at Selland Arena Fresno the same year. They played Rock and Roll Girl and did 4 and 20 and a few other CSN along with his solo stuff. I was praying they'd do Go Back Home and Eric Clapton would guest on it. But nada. They did play their entire first lp start to finish. I know I had it memorized by then. The thing that cracked me up the most is out of the blue, Stills turns to us and says, "I'm the MAN in MAN-assA/Es.😂😂.....😣
Great to see him looking so well. That first Manassas album is absolutely golden from start to finish, possibly the best thing Stills produced. Pure magic. I would have loved to have seen this band live.
All of the bands mentioned above were among my most favorite and they inspired me to embrace all types of music. I am forever grateful to all of them for their influence.
Fantastic Record the first Manassas album very eclectic and great songs, and great Musicians, from an era when the Music Mattered and was paramount among real recording artists, Just wish we could go back to these great creative days, it was the golden age of Music 🌞⭐️👍🏻❤️
I agree with both you two below....the Manassas recordings are phenomenal. Lucky for me....Manassas is right down the road a piece. Stephen being a history buff of the Civil War and visiting the Historical sites and battlefields. The trail station where the picture was taken is a historical landmark. You did a superb job doing this video all correct....all of them are and those not here just superb people especially off stage. Kudos to you for this one!
Manassas was a great band. I loved the double album and still do, playing it frequently. Saw the band live at The Rainbow in London with my pal Adrian (1972?) and the whole thing was brilliant. All the band members were masters of their instruments and they played basically 3 hours. Stephen Stills is a great musician, saw him again in 2017 or so in Manchester UK as part of CSN, they were really good but it was Stills, guitar playing that stood out above everything else.
The first Manassas double album is one of the best albums ever made, I love Chris Hillman too. The whole band and album still stands as a masterpiece, I think it’s up there with 1970’s Layla, I certainly have played it constantly over all these years, I was just 16 when it was released & my favorite song is Johnny’s Garden, though all of those Colorado songs are perfection.❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
Stills' first solo album and Manassas #1 were two of the best records of the early '70s. I think they're both underrated, especially Manassas #1. It's clearly the best from the band, the most spontaneous and well played. "Change Partners" is really the longest lasting hit from the first album. Stills flies under the radar when guitar players are rated, but he was one of the best in that era, not to mention his terrific voice and song writing talent. Quite a package, really. And he is still out there, too. Check out the album he did with Kenny Wayne Shepherd a couple of years ago. Excellent.
The first time I saw Stills in concert was Manassas in Bloomington, Indiana in 1972. They opened with Rock and Roll Woman, Stills using the white Gretch. I was hooked. Now, almost 50 years later I listen to something he is a part of almost everyday.
That's Neil. When he did Stills / Young band, They were on tour and Neil's bus was following Steve's. Stills took a left and Neil took a right at an intesection and Neil disappeared, later sending a telegraph that said "Some things weren't meant to last. Eat a peach for peace, Neil". Stills finished the tour without Neil. Long May You Run, Indeed.
I saw Manassas play just after they released their double lp. Not only did they play for almost 3 hrs. and did a lot of Springfield and CSN tunes plus his solo stuff but they started out playing their entire 2-lp record from start to finish. It was a great show. But something that Stephen said on stage really told me something about his personality and sense of humor. When he was performing he suddenly said, "I'm the MAN in MANassas. So that leaves the rest of the band as the ASSES I thought. Kinda' told me a little about him more than his music ever did. But it still was a great show and admittedly he was THE man in that band.
I enjoyed seeing Stephen’s memorabilia at the Colorado Music HOF. I listened to his song Colorado constantly when I first moved here and I could really understand why so many musicians lived here and recorded such a trove of amazing music here. 🏔
I was there, too. No boogyin' in the aisles! I saw them get one guy. It wasn't pretty. But Manassas was a great live band. I saw them at Anaheim Convention Center, too. Stills liked to open with Rock 'n' Roll Woman.
Good job on this. All these guys are great musicians and songwriters. But Steven Stills , well he's the best in the West and most talked about in the East.

Saw Stephen Stills & Manassas in concert in the summer of 1972 at Swing Auditorium in So. Cal. Too bad the band only lasted for a couple of years. Had some great music.
I had that record....Great musicians and a great bunch of very good songs....I sold it recently because I don't listen to vinyl records anymore, but I keep on listening that kind of music from other sources....
Dang....sorry I missed that sale. Use to have the Classic Records version on 180 gram vinyl but sold it too. Now I only have the CD. Still play vinyl though. Analog Forever!
I still play it today and it comes on holiday every may, saw them at Wembley london when they toured ! Great recording quality brought on stage too just super band !

Il primo disco di stills ed il primo dei manassas sono parte integrante della mia gioventù...gli ascoltavo diciottenne quando i miei coetanei ascoltavano Jovanotti...stills è un grande genio del novecento.
Manassas is played stills to this day, and I have the album in mint stills , and Steven's solo , always love his voice and guitar work and his band is always tops . a byrd and a buffalo.
The first double album is one that never got old I still hear new things on it , Stills is brilliant of course but what a group, thats cool to hear Christ Hillman giving in up for Stills
Me too. My first itteration was tape, then vinyl then cd. I have a remastered Rhino 180 gram vinyl remastered by Bernie Grumman. Excellent sound on a nice system. It comes out at least once a year in my rotation.
Steven Stills is one of the mist underrated guitarists up there w Jerry Duane Dickey and Jimi and Joe Country wise he is as good as Messina Ask Vince Gill or Keith Urban my HO oh yes and Neil As well!
A very fine guitarist on both electric and acoustic. I still think his wah playing on "Season of the Witch" ("Super Session") is the best there is. Great singer, too, of course.
105 straight hours in the studio...hmmm...wonder how they did it? That said, the 1st Manassas LP is an overlooked classic double IMO -- up there with Layla, Exile et al.
An ADD insomnia didn't really need 'supplement' so that probably wasn't the best choice, but he didn't like pot. Both his parents were alcoholic and we now know, of course, which we didn't then that that gives one a predilection for the same.
I think that's a little unfair. It was the chemistry between all three of them and later with Young that brought the magic. I think Stills loved playing with those guys, I also think he'd disagree with you.

Even Pieces which came out some years ago is such a delicate wonderfull album. I missed them in 1972 in Amsterdam.
Agreed %100!
I concur.
I own it to its coming out pressed fresh on vinyl. I would never sell it for anything.
First Manassas album: 4 themes on 4 sides. Brilliant. Stills is criminally underrated.
Stills is a living legend.
Mannassas never gets old. I listen to it every week. Thank you Stephen and Chris, you kicked ass . Unforgettable
Stills is an under appreciated musical genius. A hell of a good guitarist too.

Same here.

Saw Manassas at Carnegie Hall the year of the band's debut. Brilliant bunch of musicians.
I am so blessed to have seen this band live. Selland Arena July 1973. What a memorable night.

Yes, same here!

That first Manassas LP is a perennial killer.
Love the album music and cover - the feel of the music is that of that scene in the snow by the split rail fence ..... just right! jj

I was there, too. No boogyin' in the aisles! I saw them get one guy. It wasn't pretty. But Manassas was a great live band. I saw them at Anaheim Convention Center, too. Stills liked to open with Rock 'n' Roll Woman.
I saw Manassas many times at the Berkeley Community Theater. MAN! they put out a lot of energy! I just enjoyed myself so much. Stills was a monster!
This is a really good segment.
Good job on this. All these guys are great musicians and songwriters. But Steven Stills , well he's the best in the West and most talked about in the East.
Nah. The Best in the West was Rusty Young of Poco. Said so himself. lol
I was "on the rail" for a Mannassas show in Ann Arbor. They were different than anyone else at the time. It was a great show.
Glad I saw him on one of his solo tours
I saw Manassas in Berkeley the year that first album icame out and what a show! Wonderful!
Steven is the one. Thanks Steven.
That's a great song, great performance, great vid.

This was when music was music! The two Manassas records are my all-time favorite albums.
Had it on vinyl and now on cd........great album !
Great band. Quality, quality music. And a great clip too. Lot's of interesting information.

Really well done video. Learned some new info. Terrific clips and photos.
Yea I liked that pic. of the 59Ranchero ..
One of my all time favorite albums.
I highly recommend the Colorado Music Hall of Fame, they’ve got a lot of Stills memorabilia from his time here.
Forgot to mention another member from Barnstorm ( Joe Vitale)that was in a band with Stephen Stills .
Just stumbled across your channel, I wasn’t even searching for Stills at the time. What a great video!

I totally Agree ! - so many Good songs !
I heard a story that Rolling Stones member Ronnie Wood saw Manassas in concert in London and wanted to quit the Stones and go on tour with them!
Wood joined the Stones in 1975. Manassas was done by then. Nice story though.
This was bill wyman who stated he would leave the stones to join manassas. Bill also cowrite 1 song and played on this fantastic album
Absolutely true
It was Wyman my bad
@@benzuckerman It was wasn't Wood. It was Wyman or Watts.
Wow...Allot of Colorado History I that I did not know. I have that Dan McCorison Album..
Hey, Steven, remember Sparkles the donkey and the Likskillet Cafe in Gold Hill? Peter from Gold Hill.
Next to the Beatles Steven Stills is my fav.
If you haven't heard the Manassas album "Pieces" you are missing out! It is very obscure but excellent......
best album ever
I have the 2nd Manasas LP. found it years ago at a goodwill store, paid $1 for it. good stuff
Steve always had an over load of talent I think no one today even comes close
Chris Hillman also was in the Desert Rose Band ..I bought their casset in the 90s for one song I liked ,,but cant remember the song now ..
Love Undecided??
Crosby, Stills, and Nash was "Stephen Stills with backup singers, Nash and Crosby".
I think that's a little unfair. It was the chemistry between all three of them and later with Young that brought the magic. I think Stills loved playing with those guys, I also think he'd disagree with you.
Bullshit! David Crosby maybe, but Graham Nash added a magical ingredient to that trio.
Idiotic
All based on God's country...boulder and caribou...we all played it back east in prepschool!!...i remember well.
Stephen Stills is/was a genius (period) 🥸
