My neighbors kept saying thier cousin Stephen was coming up from the south for a visit
The day finaly came and i remember a sandy headed youg man appeared dressed in a white t shirt blue jeans and on slung over his shoulder was a martin 12 fret ooo guitar. We all played foot ball out in the front yard that summer. I was just a child and i remember Stephen sitting around playing and singing for us. Steve Stills was a hero of mine as a young guy. Absolutely triple threat singer/songwriter/guitarist and producer…wait, that’s four lol. Bought all the great early albums- Springfield, CSN, CSNY, Solo, Manassas… 75%+ of the music in the box set he did this interview to plug and that I also bought back then. Saw CSN live four times, CSNY three and Manassas twice …one of those Manassas shows is still in my all-time top 10 concerts. I was and am a Stephen Stills fan.
Sad to see time and a rock and roll lifestyle diminish his talent and singing voice- though his lead playing got even better in the 2000s. Thankful for all the wonderful 1960s-70s music and great 70s shows.
    Thanks for sharing this interview.

In addition to his explicit musicality, Stephen Stills is musical in his interpretation of the events that are considered at the moment. Costas does the same thing, in a way that allows someone directly responsive and respectful to the experience of living. There is, of course a price for that. I appreciate the honest context that Stills provides here as related to questions about what was happening in 1991. And then connect that through a set of data points experientially considered, that continue to connect to what is happening right now, October 24, 2023. re: "For What It's Worth", "Teach Your Children", "4 and 20", "Carry On". Thank you for an informative interview, that still relates to the present, but that is an essential part of the artist's work. In this case, Steven Stills.

It’s heartwarming to hear Stephen speak so warmly and affectionately about David. I spent a while touring with Stephen, David, and Graham. It was a musical wonderland, with many surprises and a super happy crowd every night. Personally, it was a lot, with three vastly different personalities that sometimes made me wonder how they could ever pull a show together each night. Age is being very kind to David and Stephen.
I first met Stephen early in the afternoon in Houston. I heard a thumping at the door and looked through the window to see him getting way too much attention from ‘fans’. Opening the door to give him an escape, he jumped inside the truck, genuinely affected, actually hurt that fans could be so crude and stupid, he had tears in his eyes. I gave him a chair, locked the door and had a nice time watching him unwind. He’s a very generous conversationalist, and I don’t mean that in a bad way, but he does like to talk.
This was November of 1979, incredibly, 43 years ago. We had a nice thanksgiving dinner thanks to the guys. A sit down with linens and waiters for 50-60. That sort of thing is unheard of on the road. It was a happy crew.

Can't thank you enough for this fascinating and complete interview with Stephen Stills. You have an informed, articulate and courteous interviewer in Bob Costas, and an equally thoughtful guest such Stills, and you have the makings of a fine interview.
It was always a treat to watch this late at night, when much of the noise of the day had subsided, in a quieter hour, where more thoughtful ideas and conversation could happen. And at just a half hour, Costa's show was just enough of a good thing.
Both he and Charlie Rose were such fine interviewers.
I felt badly when Costa's decided to pull the plug on his late night program. But he said, at some point years later, he felt he had gone as far as he could with the program, didn't want it to become stale...or words to that effect. He would know better than anyone.
Anyway, you've kept the show alive by putting it on RUclips. So,thank you again.

I was a 13-year old music-smacked kid in 1970. All I wanted to be was Stephen Stills. His music carried me from one day to the next, marinated my guitar. That coat he wears on the CSN album cover, on the front porch........I had a jacket just like it. Wore it 'til you could READ through it.

Very enlightening interview. One thing about Stills, he is very diplomatic. He could have come down hard on Crosby, like Graham Nash has done, but he demurred. He could have mentioned that "Manassas" was virtually shelved by Ahmet Ertegun to hold out for another CSN album, which Atlantic saw as a cash cow, but he didn't. Class act.

I saw Stephen Stills twice, he blew me away, he played “For what it’s Worth” in a blistering lead guitar, that was so good, in Redding Calif, then saw him play acoustically with Judy Collins, again excellent! The songs he has written, his playing talent, a real class guy, the interview was really have to respect him!

Thanks for putting Bob Costas’ interview
of Stephen Stills online for us to see.
You touched on something I think is true.
Costas had a talent for drawing people out in interviews.

I first song, and a song remembered him. Harmonic notes !
Then I rode a limousine Jerry Miller (from Moby Grape), Stephen Stills and my limousine.
Then I met Crosby, Stills, and Nash. Backstage. ;-)

Stephen is my favorite singer/songwriter/guitarist. Although I like CSN(Y) and Buffalo Springfield, his band Manassas was my favorite. What a killer group and Stephen was at the height of his songwriting power. I wish they would have made some more albums together. I also love his solo work and more recently his records as the band The Rides (with Kenny Wayne Sheppard).

Many artists had an effect on us born in early 60s. Music family travel camping friends and school was everything a lil church. My fam Lutheran and Catholic by birth let us be free to learn and go to any church and great music. I feel so blessed. Trips camping and LA in 67-69. Amazing. Goin to California Led Zep is also one of my fav bands.

I really liked the band Manassas that Stephen put together at one point. Also I really like his first solo album...pretty cool: Guest appearances by Hendrix and Clapton back to back on two tunes. But even without those guys it was a great album; excellent songwriting.

@@patrickmorgan4006 Agreed. His Stephen Stills 1 album, IMO, rivals anything CSNY produced. He was the driving song writer for CSNY. Love the One You’re With and Sweet Judy Blue Eyes (which he wrote) are timeless classics.
