I discovered this absolutely great genius in recent times. I started listening to all his work, discovering an incredibly powerful music A lonely man who lived a terrible life, but had inside his mind and heart the great gift of music. He has been a prolific composer, With Shostakovich and Schnittke he created the strongest classic music of our recent times. He wasn't a bad clone of Shostakovich. He was a close Dimitri's friend and they worked together for many years, helping and inspiring each others. I suggest everybody to pay attention to this great and mostly unknown composer. It's worth, believe me!
@william manson No way is he a clone of Shostakovich. He and Dmitri are like two brothers who look totally unlike each other, but both resemble their father - Mahler.
Early works composed in 1939- June 1941 were written in Minsk where he was tutored by a former student of Balakirev and Rimsky-Korsakov. Works completed between mid-1941 and 1943 were written in Tashkent. All subsequent works were written in Moscow.
Wonderful ❤

The two other giants of the Soviet era are Weinberg and Popov, imo.

Weinberg breathes the strength of Russian spirit

This gets me so high. Shalom!
It reminds me Shostakovich's 7th symphony.
Dang, he DOES sound like DSH.
He sounds a lot more like Weinberg!
The beggining sounds even more to Prokofiev!
