    My local orchestra (Dallas Symphony Orchestra) performed this when I was 17-years-old (in 2009) and I'll never forget it. I went the week of my birthday. The organ blasted me back against my seat as I was overwhelmed with involuntary tears of joy and triumph. The notes soared as the orchestra seemingly bathed the entire symphony hall with light, swept space clean, and left nothing but the joy of an unobstructed effort.

      Well said. I have similar experiences with such music in concert halls, especially when I sit relatively close where the sound is louder. The ending of Shostakovich 5th is similar. But the timpani is coupled with a bass drum which makes it even more overwhelming.

      Good words. I experienced similar in Prague some years ago when I sat in front of Prague Philharmonic, and they were playing Richardt Strauss "Also sprach Zarathustra"! Suddenly, without the slightest "telling me" teardrops ran down my face...and I was completely in the hands of the music and a wonderful orchestra!

    Saw this performed live at St. George’s Hall Bradford last night by the Belgian National Orchestra. Storming performance, ten minute standing ovation. When the organ came crashing in like a thunderbolt at the start of the final movement I nearly fell over the Dress Circle balcony! 😮😲

      First time I saw this (I had never heard of it before) was w/ the San Fran. Symph. many years ago w/ Jan Pascal Tortilier as the conductor. It blew me away so I pretty much memorized it; I've seen it many times since and I get so into it that I end up mimicking the kettle drum player during many parts. One day at Disney Hall in L.A. I sat behind the orchestra, and just happened to be sitting next to June Lockhart, and after it was over she said: "how can you do that ?.....you knew all the parts !"

    I really haven't been aware of or heard much Saint Saens but, after this, I think that will change. I love the transition at about the 30:30 mark which left me with goose bumps. I have listened to this piece three times today. To me, this is what music should provide the listener and it did. Absolutely lovely!

    • @EnricoMRemondini
      @EnricoMRemondini 3 года назад +7

      Yes, absolutely, the transition from the end of 3rd movement into the 4th one , with the orgue incipit is the best part of all the concert, along with the 4 hands piano shortly after the beginning of the 4th movement. I enjoy comparing that bit in various interpretations and I have found out that some make use of a firm heystroke at the end of the sequence (played by the right piano player) which becomes the "sparking signal" for the whole orchestra (orgue first) to move on... I always loved C S-S since I was a young boy, classical music is a divine gift to humankind !!! Thank you Lord for the music !

    Possibly the best conductor out there right now. He re-imagines the works he conducts and they come out sounding almost new again. He also seems to get the strongest, most involved, most emotional playing from the orchestra. His Mozart symphonies on Harmonia Mundi show the same. He pays attention to the details and brings out new sonorities we don't often get to appreciate in those works we have heard one hundred times or more, and though not slow, he does not rush the orchestra through passages most conductors seem to pay little attention to and hurry through.

      Indeed, refined, incredibly subtle on passage-work and crescendi... and so powerful. Every time I see/hear HR Frankfurt I'm tempted to think it's the orchestra from Heaven.

      I believe that it is usual to have two pianists playing the accompanying piano part - well that is my understanding anyway and it does an element of finesse to the piece

    Écoutez à 12.13 cette entrée prodigieusement douce de l'orgue , telle une prière muette , puis cet élargissement graduel à tout l'orchestre d'un lyrisme puissant dont l'expression finalement impétueuse à partir de 30.30 ,précédée en 29.51 de quelques mesures de grâce suspendue d'un merveilleux hautbois , habitera tout le dernier mouvement,oû le jeu des deux pianistes ne sera pas la moindre des beautés .
    Bravo à cet orchestre ,devenu justement célèbre pour un son si somptueux et raffiné.
