The BEST and FASTEST way to teach STAY - stay training, stay fun!

  • Training your dog to stay using this method incorporates many wonderful concepts into the training process:
1-By click as distractions happen you are using classical conditioning to change your dog's emotional response to being calm and relaxed around those distractions. Lowering a dogs stress levels when asked to stay, which in turn will make the behavior more reliable. The distractions become conditioned secondary reinforcers.
2- By teaching the release cue first, you are using 'back chaining' by working on the end of the behavior of the stay first. Back chaining creates strong behaviors.
3- You are using the Premack Principle: the higher probability behavior predicts a lower probability behavior. Staying predicts getting up and getting to do what the dog wanted to do. Meaning the behavior will be stronger.
4- By clicking the release as a behavior it becomes a secondary reinforcer. So every time you release your dog from a stay, you are actually rewarding him for staying.

Update on Ace - I have gotten him involved in playing some of the games ruclips.net/user/postUgkx1_veP7CApJK_GWy_TczaMciuG64PqJeU and I can see a difference in his confidence already! My other dog played along and he became intrigued - now its a daily part of our routine - about 3 times a day we do the shell game and the muffin tin game. I am so grateful for coming upon your training techniques!

I have an Eng.Bulldog/Staff/Pit mix. I thought she was very outgoing but, now realize she's scared of all new situations and dog intimidated. I'm an old dog trainer(punish/reward) but, I'm seeing this isn't building confidence. She's taking on a half dominant rule because she doesn't feel my leadership or that I'll protect her. Your training is just what I need to be friends with my dog not her boss. I'm sure she'll call down and worry less if I start a new way of training her. Thanks so much for teaching this old dog better tricks!!!!

my dog already new how to sit and stay but he would only hold it for about 10 secs, and now that I showed him the release cue he wont move until I release him, I can jump up and down, tell him to come, call his name and he wont move. and it only took ten mins and a hole chicken for my German shepherd to learn it. I think that's the nicest, one could possibly give and you say you were an old-school trainer even better I have only watched three of this lady's videos but I found her to be one of two of the best I have ever seen or experienced personally after watching possibly 4000 different videos on RUclips with different trainers behaviorist all different schools of thought Etc and all of that research I have only found one other that is I would say equal but extremely different showing how to use dog body language and nothing else to train not even a single word it is Martin McKenna the dreadlock dog man as I said and probably three maybe even 4000 videos and different everything's LOL these two this lady here and Martin are like absolute Gods compared to everyone else with their methods absolutely being clear not only to you but also the dog 100% non punishments and 100% works on every dog the first time amazing stunning the rest of the people on RUclips teaching in my opinion could now be absolutely deleted can we would have a better or balanced Society of pets and owners props to you and thank you so much for your hard work the dogs thank you too

I just discovered you, and I love the way you teach your dogs, I'm going to start right now with my two years old dog to improve her behaviour and obedience.
I already had a clicker but I've been using it in such a different way because in the other videos that I had seen people didn't do things step by step like you, and even mixed the use of clicker with some negative reinforcement... I'm done with negative reinforcement (I didn't even realize that what I was doing was "negative" at all!!) from now on.
    Thanks and stay awesome!

@Chipwhitley274 Dogs are not toys or possessions in my opinion. I do not risk their safety making them stay in dangerous situations. My dogs are my companions- so if I see a dangerous situation- I get my dogs out of there- even if it makes me look rude or like an ******* to other people. My dog comes first- not someones hurt feelings. I have had to see two of my dogs get attacked while they did not bite back or complain- if its in my power I will keep my dogs safe from all harm.

Best complete step by step training video online for this behavior. Remember everyone that you need to progress only at the level and speed your dog can be successful at achieving. Be patient and consistent. Timing is important with clicker and treat delivery. Practice your timing skills and your dog will better understand and learn. This behavior is learned over a long period of time, not 20 minutes. :) Thank you kikopups for sharing your training methods in a video for the rest of us.

I use a squeaker from one of my pups old toys seems to work also.. 4 month old pup gets bored within 20 minutes but we train at least twice a day doing the basics for now. He's been doing okay lots more to go. I have done all my training on my own with all my dogs and have had great results.

I learned from Turid Rugaas methods (which taught me more about dog behaviour then any other training I have done and I have done a few) to watch untrained dogs and see if they sit at all. Some do but most do not. My german shepherd definately never sits. Always stands or lies down. For many breeds it is downright uncomfortable, like for breeds with long backs. For dogs with backproblems (and many owners do not notice those untill it's (too) late) it is also not advisable to make them sit. My dogs do not have to, I find it totally unnecessary. But everybody ofcourse is free to do whatever they want. Just keep your dogs health always in mind.

I know it's really confusing. I feel bad for people getting conflicting info. It is a good skill to watch a video and ask oneself if what the person is saying is based on science or opinion and the chances of it being likely. I take everything I learn from even my most favorite trainers and behavior and science as something that could be true or untrue... If someone makes a generalized statement, its important to wonder, how did the statement come about?

I followed all of Kikopup's positive reinforcement training with my last puppy and had a confidant, well adjusted, happy and well behaved dog that, for the most part, ran free (because he had learned a bomb-proof recall). I can't help walking up to a puppy's new owner and tell them about Kikopup. If but one of these people that I bother will listen and follow this training, it'll be worth it. Try clicking for eye contact, a very good place to start.

@Chipwhitley274 regarding treats... the dogs (and cats) trained by the military to follow directional radio orders from a handler stationed miles away were trained similarly- not using positive punishment. The reason the military used this form of training is because it is more reliable than using punishment.. not because they were hippies. The STAY to me is a "trick" as with positive reinforcement you dont really have to teach a stay- you can just teach your dog to stay within 15 feet of you

I'm no kikopup, but I do have a degree in education, and I'll wholeheartedly endorse her methods from a modern educational theory perspective. Clickers are a much more precise abstracted reinforcement than any verbal cue, hand motion, etc. Verbal cues and hand movements are subject to our shifting inflections, moods, and so on, making them variable. The clicker is, in essence, objective. Also, it is much shorter than verbal cues, and therefore more precise. Finally, clickers are 2 - 5 USD.

I have to keep coming back here, every time we hit a wall with training it seems that release has fallen apart and needs to be reone and reinforced. I've used Tab's method on both my puppies (got them at the same time so had to train both at the same time). I would say "sit" just once, and the moment they sit I click and give the treat. Do this over and over again. Say it just once and wait for them to sit. After awhile they respond quicker to you.

This is a great video! I appreciate the precision in the foot placement to prevent creeping. I had not thought of that, but with my latest dog I now want to go back and refine his body positions.
I found you because I am seeing some adolescent behavior from him with strangers concerning handling and taking treats. He gets snappy and snarly/barky when he is uncomfortable or highly aroused around food. Unfortunately he flips between ecstatic and intimidating without much warning, scaring people and catching me off guard too. So we are working on calmness around food and relaxed body positions, and once we have a calm secondary reinforcer we will go back to stranger danger desens. He is my first dog that gets so energized during training that it interferes with our goals. Anyway, I am a fan! Thanks for sharing your work!

@dsostringbean I did not train my dogs that the click signifies the end of the behavior. But if you trained the click like a release word (that the dog can get up and get a treat)- you could use a different noise to train the stay- like a whistle or the word "yes"

@cdubois50 Some people train the dog that the click is a release- but I don't- however if your dog already knows the click as a release- you can use a different marker like a whistle or word that means- "yes you got that right (but I will bring the reward to you)" you can practice just asking the dog to down- and then feeding- if the dog moves upwards to get the treat (no treat) if the dog keeps still- then the treat comes down and is released onto the ground or into the mouth.

@PYates77, I believe we're working with the dog's strengths to build confidence and willingness to do as we ask.
We make a ton of meaningless (to the dog) vocal sounds and fewer meaningless (again, to the dog) flailing of our arms. If the dog first learns what we want him to do (by luring) and then learns hand signals with the desired movement, he learns "I can do this action and make my human happy," a lot faster. After that, you help him decipher the noise.

@hdsheena I totally agree! I believe in Europe you can choose either the back feet or the front feet to stay in the same location in OCI. But I think this is easier to lure for pet parents than teaching a down from a sit where the dog has to scoot their back end backwards. In fact in my dvd it will go over how to teach the tucked sit and the pop out stand and the scoot down from the sit. also these are good for the heel position (a tucked sit looks so much nicer)

    Few questions:
    1. The trainers here (I'm stationed in Singapore) vary in their teaching. What is the difference between using treats and not using them...I'm confused?
    2. Do you have a video series on all the functions for dog obedience, particularly dumbbell retrieval, quick-down, etc.
BTW, your videos ROCK and you are excellent with your training.

Hi I'm from Singapore too. I think you could clarify a bit more with your q1, but based on my own research at finding a trainer here in s'pore, those who do not use treats at all rely mainly on punishment. You should not go to those places. The treat makes the dog want to perform that action. Without a treat, the dog has no incentive. Most of the trainers I've actually found in s'pore use punishment methods(eg choke chain, prong collar, shock collar) though. Search for those who tout 'positive reinforcement', but you should also access your dogs problems and whether a simple course would be enough etc. My dog had quite a problematic issue so usually although I'm against it, I used a prong collar for her. I removed it as soon as I could though. Take whatever your potential trainer says with a pinch of salt(the trainer I referred to for the prong actually uses prong for her basic obedience courses, COMPLETELY UNNECESSARY.) and do your own research.
If you're talking about fading the lure, then it's simply because it is not possible to have a treat with you at all times and you want to make sure the dog can perform reliably without the treat.

Excellent video indeed. Kikopup imo is one of the best examples of how youtube can be educational as well rather than just entertainment. Keep it going you the best! (really)

@nataliawasilewska97 When you teach a behavior backwards- Like teaching "drop it" first when teaching a retrieve- then teaching the dog to offer and drop, then teaching run towards you, offer and drop, then pick up, run towards offer and drop, then run out pick up offer and drop... etc. For the stay- you teach the release cue first. :)

have 5-10 treats ready and "funnel" them continuously at the dog (place on floor, do not hand feed) as fast as he can eat them long as hes still. If he fidgets, stop feeding him, wait a few seconds and then reset him. Otherwise, release him after your last treat. This way he learns as long as hes still, food comes. This should calm him down and you can reduce the number of treats in a few sessions. :) Hope that helps!

Hi kikopup. Thank you so much for all of your videos. After the first video i saw i subscribed. And ive watched multiple videos already. Today i went and bought a clicker and smaller treats. I have very little dog experience but i am ashamed to say that i learned that beating a dog was good training. I agree with everything your combined style is and your manifesto. I started at an animal shelter and i have already told my boss about you and your videos.

@@kikopup Training My 9 week old puppy, Just can't figure out how you get them to stay without moving. Once I reward him, he wants to come towards me. He gets the three positions, but we're stuck at (video Time 9:06) staying in the positions. You make it look so easy, but your dog seems to be already trained.
