Larch is a cheaper option than cedar and looks good. Would put the black weed membrane behind just the wall bit. I think this fencing is called Venetian fencing. Also put a capping rail on the top
Lovely job, if you keep losing the spacers it might be worth wrapping them in bright tape to keep track of them when you put them down. Keep up the good work and positivity 🙂 👍
Nice job. I do lots of these. Couple of points / questions. Get yourself an sds hammer drill, will take so much of the effort of drilling the walls out of the equation. The dch263 is the cheapest at around £130 and is plenty powerful for what you need. What fixings were you using? They seem to hold well so always interested to know what people use and think of them. I have heard this fence type called a 'Hit' fence as its only half of a Hit and Miss fence. That fence looked close to 2.4m high when you were done, was that with consent from both sides as the country limit without planning is 2m? Couple of things you could consider for these in the future, I normally put the posts on and then spray the entire thing black before the slats go on just to make it even. If you can't spray, cheap weed membrane is a good alternative just stapled onto the posts before slats. Something else that you could consider as an upsell is doing hit and miss on the top part so improve the privacy but still allow wind through. Bet you are glad you splashed for the nailer after that job :) Nice Work.

Just bought a new table saw so need to save a bit. 😩 Fixings wise I use 8mm plugs for this and 100mm hex carpenters mate screws. There not the cheapest but I find once in they are staying. Need very good fixings as a lot of weight. Hit and miss fence or also called a shadow box fence. Your correct about letting the wind through. I use roofing baton which is 20x50mm with a 20mm space. The customer did have consent, I had that conversation with them. As you know all the timber is tanalised but the customer was painting it afterwards fencing oil to add another level of protection. I haven’t got any way of spraying at present. A nailer you really couldn’t do this without one. One of the best things I’ve brought recently. You can never have enough tools. Thanks again Mark
Good video mate, quick question though, would you use a 2nd fix nail gun with 16ga 63mm nails instead of the 1st fix you used ? Only asking because 1st fix nail guns tend to leave ugly nails heads showing on every slat, where as 2nd fix are almost hidden completely , and you could even put 2 x 16ga 63mm nails in each slat for added strength and still not notice them, just a thought.
I'm doing a very similar job in the next few weeks. Do you need to treat the cut ends of the battens with anything or are they alright if it's already treated timber ?
If I’m doing a long repetitive job i use all my mindfulness training and practice to just stay in the moment otherwise I would keep thinking this is so long. It a process and technique i practice on many this. Really helps then my mind stays in a good place.
Personally i would put black geatextile (weed control) membrane on the wall either first or after the vertical battens which would hide the white wall and give a dark background effect and would also do the reverse side of the fence above the wall so you cannot see through it, othewise good job. Also did you bother to sand and finish after with Osmo stain?

Why didn’t you actually show how you actually did the job - ie actual time or slow mo. How did you attached the batons to the wall, what size screws & plugs, how did you nail the slats to the frame etc. showing it in speeded up time did not help your video. !!! IMO.

A nailer you really couldn’t do this without one. One of the best things I’ve brought recently. You can never have enough tools.

You could do as you say . The fixing needs to be strong which is why I use a framing nailer. Never had an issue doing this

Hi Aaron the materials are roofing battening 2x1 pressure treated. Spacing is 20mm.
Any battening would create the desired effect.

They are already treated so you don’t have to but I always advise to brush on once a year fencing oil , thus just adds to the longevity
