I think this is the most useful video on drumming I’ve ever seen.
Thank you sooooo much!
I came to the comment section to say exactly this
Very helpful to know as a composer as well! Thanks for this!
I have been drumming for 20 years and that is the clearest and most succinct explanation I have ever heard. Awesome vids 🤘🏼
Thank you!❤
Saving this
That's very interesting❤😊
Thank You!! always struggled with this stuff, this really helped :)
Just discovered your channel… Fantastic! But you’re too good of a musician to lower your standards and refer to your base drum as the “kick.” Please don’t let no-nothings co-opt our musical lingo, like the so-called “singer” of the first band I was in. He assumed I was a non-musician as well, so he thought what I did was kick my drum. I don’t see it that way. As a musician, do you find yourself kicking your drum, or operating the pedal attached to the bass drum with a sophisticated musical technique?
Keep up the good work… Thanks!
Best way anyone's explained it, ty
I can't get enough of your videos I swear
Same here. And in not a drummer. My brother had a kit when i was about 16 and i just found the drums tough. But I love the way Emma breaks down everything. She’s seems a really good teacher. Unfortunately im 44 now so picking up the drums is a step too far for husband and kids to bare😂
Important to know that a lot of this differs with each piece and between genres. Especially the ride and hi hat I see the other way all the time, and often I see the snare on the note b on the stave in treble.
What if you're the drummer of Dream Theater and have like 5 of everything?
I was about to say that lol
miss.. is your drum support half open hi hat?
I never actually understood this even though I'd seen it before! Thank you Emma! ❤
I'm gonna be honest... I've played drum for 7 years now, I'm 15. The toms are put everywhere. The lowest in the kick 2 top circles are the toms second lowest is floor and the snare is the one that is just the most logical. That's how I remember it. What is the most logical.
You did high hats, crash, and ride cymbals. That’s all great, but what about chinas, splash, effects, and other types of cymbals????
I’ve been watching your clips for a few weeks now. You are a helluva great teacher, I’m learning a lot from you!
funny how i don't know how to read any piece of music but drums
And then one up from that you get a splash one up from that you get a china
U r a great teacher !!!
Thank u !!
How would one annotate playing the ceiling? I guess glassware counts as hihats, right?
Too much work I’ll just use my ear and play the songs wrong per usual
I'm a guitarist and thank you for letting me anniy the fuck out of my drummer
This must be a UK or EU way, this is close but not exact to how I was taught in Aus
My smartass was trying to write the drum parts and figuring those parts as I went
I can't do it. Never could. 😂
Nice! This help me out a lot. Thanks much my girl
As a multi instrumentalist. I refuse to learn any sheet music.
Poshest drummer I've ever heard !
this has helped a lot what do I play for hihat if there is no symbol next to it
I'm from Sri Lanka God bless you
I have 4 Tom’s and 5 cymbals…….
Thanks. You’re a great teacher. 🙌🏾
How do i count blastbeats though??
This is incredibly accurate however the symbols used (not the placement of the notes) are subjective depending on the person writing the music (please don’t come after me I play the drums in a band this is just stuff I have picked up along the way)

So Neil Pearts staff is infiniate😂
My pianist brain is screaming
Thank you very much
Nicely done Em👍👍🎶🎶🎼
This is pretty helpful, but not everyone writes the hi-hat the same way. I usually use an x on the top space within the staff for open, and the space above the staff for a closed hi-hat. I also put the hi-hat pedal on the space underneath the staff. This is also the default way that MuseScore charts drum voicings.
Is stave only the lines?
another great video, and great shirt too!
Thanks alot to this channel I've learnt more from you in one month than I have in the past one year
Thank you for your lesson, is better explain than books. ❤
Too complicated
But what about ALL THE OTHER TYPES OF CYMBALS?!?
Emma we love you you know it
Killer accent
With our music in Australia, an open hi hat is a X in a circle
Thank you
That hurt.
Excellent
Staff.
So what if you have a big setup with 20 drums and cymbals?
Oh and what if you're that crazy drummer that plays upside down?
I would like to know the answer to this question also
Bro that tshirt. Hell yeah!
Easy and simple! 👍 Thanks. 😊
that was very succinct.
You really rocks!
Bro that gilmour top is crisp
Great, now all i need is a drum kit to conclude my transition from a pianist to a drummer
I played guitar and bass for a few years ( for my own pleasure) and violin around 2 years ago. I never got around to playing the bass and treble part of the piano. Is it just practice???
Noted. Thanks!
Very well presented.
Thank you!!!!! 😃
Nobody had the done this before…. that I know of. I started to learn about drums on my 57 th birthday. Have seen many videos but never seen no one explaining it like this. Thank you so much little girl. 🙋♀️😃💕🌺
Every drumset lesson book I have bought has this documented in the front few pages of the book. Mel Bay books cover this well.
I just commented that I thought I was too old at 44 to take up the drums!!! I started playing violin around 2 years ago and im not too shabby. I enjoy it anyway. How are the drums going for you?
👌
Reading music isn't necessary.
Which is not a wrong statement but reading it it's nice ;) it's being skilled that makes the difference
Can be helpful though
Maybe not “necessary”, but why wouldn’t you want to be the best at your craft ? Having the ability to sight read… allows you the opportunity to site in on any session and play the piece the way it was written…
@briancfullen4062 I guess maybe it depends on the genre. Most drummers doing popular music don't read music. Guitar players aren't reading a lot of music either.
@@ericjencson9489 I think you’re making an assumption that they don’t or can’t read music. However, my point stands… those who want to be the best at their craft take the time to learn how to read music. Most professional musician can and do read music.
