Too short isn't good, either, and shorts should not be worn anywhere. I was once at a ballet, and when everyone was being seated, some guy walked in with very short shorts. He looked so inappropriate with his quads exposed. Embarrassing. The worst part was that i don't think he saw anything wrong with it. Always dress for the occasion. If you're going to wear shorts, aim for a short that's just above the knee. We don't need to see your entire leg.
It's also been referred to as Pennsyltucky😂. Just insert any stereotypical Southern state and it's about accurate. I live in Pennsylvania on the Philadelphia side.
When i first started dressing up i started the experiment with shorts, I went from baggy cargo shorts and boxy faded shirts with boots to linen and chino shorts with a short sleeve button down shirt and white sneakers. I can honestly say i prefer my current style and feel more comfortable.
There are justified specific situations for cargo shorts and cargo pants in my opinion. When outdoors camping and outdoor hiking those extra pockets and deep pockets are functionally handy. And at an amusement park with the kids cargo shorts and pants are useful. Sure, having a backpack is great too but those are for more bigger or heavier items.
A very needed video, up slim-fit shorts above the knees, down with cargo shorts! 😆👏When shorts reach past the knees, it just looks weird because they're supposed to be *shorts,* not slightly shorter pants, what's all that extra material for? I wore cargo shorts as a teen and had no clue how ugly they were. In fact, I liked them. This is understandable when no one has taught you about style, but now there's so much information online, there's less and less excuse to look atrocious. Long and baggy shorts, as perhaps you'll cover in this video, make you look boyish, throw off your proportions, make your calves look smaller and weaker than they are regardless of their size, and the pockets are hideous and I would argue nearly always unnecessary: how often do people actually use those pockets? I've seen people try to validate them by putting their phone and wallet in them, why not just keep them in your back pockets like the rest of us? That's my rant and I'm sticking to it. 😆It's always good to see another style video from you, James, all the best!

Actually there is one (albeit small) part of the world where men have nailed the art of wearing shorts in a formal setting; Bermuda! The "Bermuda rig" consists of jacket/blazer, dress shirt and tie worn with usually brightly coloured tailored shorts cut just above the knee, and long socks to just below the knee with dress shoes. It's the default business attire.
1:10 Saw this alot in North Dakota. 50 degrees below 0,(Farenheit) is the average temp during the winter. As soon as the temp went above 0,some guys would start wearing shorts. Although I believe learning to survive and work,in extremes of weather, can be character-building, there are features of masculine anatomy, that should not be exposed to extreme cold. The ladies definitely notice the difference.
I'd love to see you touch the topic of how to wear and gear gentlemanly while bicycling. At least in Europe many men (me as well) commute and make trips and errands by bike and while I think it is possible to dress well to some point one still has to do some compromises and be well-informed with materials. My go-to attire for warm summer day while biking: short sleeved linen shirt, simple cotton shorts and sandals, leather sneakers or loafers depending on situation. And of course helmet, which sadly makes wearing a hat pretty impossible.
@@Gent.ZThanks for the recommendation. I’m a regular at Suitsupply and I like many of their casual and formal items of clothing. Have you tried Hockerty? Any good?
I’m cheap and live alone in an older trailer with no working climate control. I totally get it. I only turn on space heaters or a window AC when it’s unbearable. The opposite is worse. When the house in too dang cold or too darn hot. It’s unbearable.
What great timing! I was about to ask you to do a video for us Uber drivers or for those of us with no dress code at work. My running shorts didn't feel stylish enough, and they definitely didn't feel like they pair well with my polos.
Guys, just buy linen shorts with side adjusters and you're good. John Henric has some starting from 47usd up to 80 usd. It should be good for quite a few summers. Since its at 25+c, like 80f, while chino shorts are fine, cotton is allright... the linen is where its at, way more breathable.
I saw you in Chicago on a brief trip! Sadly I didn't get the chance to make an introduction, but it was along the Chicago Riverwalk at the BrewHouse that you were walking past on Thursday. So cool!
3:34 I respectfully disagree. As a 6’ 2” man, 5” or even 7 or 9 inch inseam shorts are way too short. They look like I am wearing gym attire. I wear 13” inseam shorts and they are above the knee.
You said to not wear a jacket with shorts, which makes sense, but what if you're out all day and it's a hot day, but then it cools down in the evening and you can't go home to change? It's east to carry around a jacket with you, perhaps in a bag, but not so easy to carry around a full change of clothes.
I am 6’ 2” - I wear 13” inseam shorts. That length is hard to find. Always check measurements before ordering. I prefer long pants, but it’s so hot in North Carolina that I have been forced to wearing shorts in Summer.
From South Africa I remember knee legth khaki shorts, knee length socks and a pair of 'Veldskoene" (desert boots). To top it off a safari jacket was worn. Now that looked extremely stylish.
The classic Bermudian style consists of shorts and a blazer. It is commonly accepted as somewhat formal due to the culture, however, I can see it being frowned upon in other parts of the world.
I live in Thailand in a beach town, so I normally wear shorts. Unless the temperature is a cold 80 degrees or lower. Thanks for the video. Lots of food for thought. When I go to Bangkok, which is hotter, counterintuitively, I wear trousers. Thailand is fairly formal and Thai men rarely wear shorts, unless at the beach or in a highly informal situation. Many foreigners (like me) wear shorts around Bangkok, but one makes a much better impression wearing trousers. Great and timely topic.
Would anyone have any advice for my current dilemma? I am 21 years old and very into style, trying very hard to escape the bland attire I see a lot of men wear (including friends, unfortunately haha). Nonetheless, I’ve had issues with the “fit”, let’s say. As a 21 year old man, I am active and workout out regularly; thus, I am still experiencing growing in muscle mass of my body so it can be difficult to get clothing as I tend to get pants, shirts, etc and then they end up not fitting anymore after two months. It’s terribly sad because I find myself constantly rebuying clothes that are quite expensive. I am not a designer brand person, but I do enjoy brands that have high price tags because they provide stylish pieces with no labels and excellent materials.
Dude, that’s a great problem to have! Bulk up as much as you can while you have the chance. Until your body mass settles down, you can go to thrift stores such as Morgan Memorial, Salvation Army, and others. You can get some great deals on excellent clothing that way, and save a lot of money.
In Bermuda business men have long worn Bermuda shorts, knee socks, dress shoes, shirt and blazer. I believe the Bermuda shorts originated from British soldiers stationed on the island. It actually looks quite smart and it comfortable to wear in the very hot and humid summers.
Please do not ruin your legs with weird and lots of tattoos. Even the nicest shorts can not improve this impression. Choose your tattoos wisely or better worship your body, you have only one exemplar!

I just notcied that a new pair of Spier & Mackay cotton fatigue shorts I bought said "dry clean only". Are they freaking kidding me??
I agree about manufacturers recommended instructions.
