  • I show you a cheap disc detainer shutter lock that can be forced open easily. Also the shackle and the locking mechanism can be disassembled. This is a great opportunity to explain how disc detainer locks work in general with the tensioning discs and the sidebar. No picking however.

    Nice video and explanation... I can’t stand those locks with the plastic core housing! The plastic housing can actually make picking tricky because tensioning a disc can deform the plastic such that the gate is no longer aligned. Light tension only on them.
    ...and thanks for the kind words. 👍

    • @Potti314
      @Potti314  5 лет назад

      Thanks, will try with light tension - was using heavy tension only before and gave up quickly thinking it tensions at the bottom. The plastic core is terrible, I just managed to force out the bolt with pliers.

      Potti314 Doesn’t surprise me... could probably do it with a torch also, which could be fun. 👍

      Thought about the torch but it stinks a lot I believe - a pair of pliers is less invasive ;-)

    When I saw this lock, I thought: it looks pretty similar to the one I have on my bike, so I immediatly ran downstairs to the cellar to check it and yes it was the same type and I was able to pry it open...LOL. It was a cheap chain lock combination for 3 euros (bought in Holland), but it did seem pretty solid for the price. Needless to say Im going to look for another lock tomorrow. Thanks for the video, you probably saved my bike! :D

    Excellent breakdown of the that lock. The sidebar is an unexpected addition for a cheap lock. It's a shame that it isn't hardened steel. You, me and the whole Community need to get LPL & BB's new tool...I wish Sparrows or someone would pick up the idea and mass produce it. 👍

    Put the shackle end in a cordless drill and put it on full speed.
    Then apply a file or saw blade to the shackle and see how long it will take to cut through 🤔🤔😂
    Nice break down of an otherwise underwhelming lock.
    Thanks for sharing 👍👍😎😎🍺😘😘

    Excellent breakdown! Thank you! It helped me to disassemble a "Pvolinson" stamped (marketed as "Rolinson" and with the font used could at first glance pass as "Rolinson"), cheap ($4) "Hardened", "100mm", "Italy Technology", and "MADE IN PRC" shutter lock. A bit of prying with a screwdriver (from the Ikea FIXA home toolkit!) popped off the retaining cap. It's a very similar design and apparently the same materials too, only the stamped logos are different. Curiously, the keys supplied have a "SOLIE" trademark. The card-backing on the package has several instructional/cautionary graphics, most of which are a mystery to me. Seems that 97mm is close enough to 100mm for this manufacturer. :) I don't have a drill, but I bet the channel holding the ball-bearings is only minimally covered by the lock exterior.
    As @LockPickingLawyer mentioned, the plastic IS easily deformed - just some moderate counterclockwise action with the key permanently deformed the plastic cam at the back of the plastic core on a metal stop pin, although not enough damage is done to prevent the lock from working.
    Hmmm, IDK. I guess it's worth $4 as a puzzle to extract the ball-bearings. :)

  • @Pyrolock

    I believe LPL or BB also pointed out the big flaw where the disc retainer can easily be pried off on these cheap Chinese disc detainer locks. Ya, I love the superior "plastic brass" core along with the Boron alloy shackle and heat treated, case hardened lock body, ya right! Be careful not to heat it with a bic lighter or you might melt that "solid super hardened disc core" (and then absolutely do not twist with screwdriver in the keyway, as you might "damage" the lock)

    • @Potti314
      @Potti314  5 лет назад

      Haha - yes, this exploit is widely known but it was interesting for me to test this myself with holding the lock in the hand. And wait for the next video to see more fun with this lock and it's plastic core.

    You can pick it just by inserting paper towels and compressing them inside. Then , any object that has shape like key will set discs in right position or it will spread plastic housing enough to simulate opening. I discovered that "method" after trying to make prank on coworker that turned into completely different thing after opening. 😂 Snaping housing from inside can also help. 😂😂😂😂

      I almost forgot about it , but , that was somewhat "ideal" attack against disc detainer locks. :) Might work on even high security ones , but NOT any of Abloy. They are quite different animal on their own. :)

    You could turn such a lock into a challenge lock by filing little false gates and wide false gaps in on the discs to give deep false sets. Use a hammer to put the ring back on.

    • @Potti314
      @Potti314  5 лет назад

      Tried with a hammer but no success, the c - clip is too rigid. But I have other plans with this lock anyway. You will see ;-)
