I am NOT into picking locks! But I enjoy watching! It is amazing to see how easy so many different types of locks can be opened in just a few minutes with a little understanding skill and minimal tools. For years my first thought to a locked box gate or anything was bolt cutters! Fast yes but how often it was my lock I would have to replace. Wish I had seen this before.
Thanx Bill, I've got lots of these but only ever opened one... But now that I've watched this I'm gonna give it a try, I had no idea what I was doing b4 now...so...
¡Buena suerte!
Next trip to S. America I'll grab another Hermex & get it to you. I have a few out there in the traveling boxes too. We don't talk about Abus disc detainers in my house... Hundreds of hours fiddling with them w/no more than 1-2 "accidental" openings. The false gates, combined with really tight tolerances make those near impossible to open in a reasonable amount of time. With all the false gates, its almost like trying to open a combination lock using near-random number sequences. TOUGH!
That second one was a fast opening, well done. I'll have to try tuning my pick and see if I can get as fast as you. I manage that sort of time occasionally, but normally it takes a few minutes. I suspect they don't do false gates as it would add a few pennies per disc, and that adds up!
Bill lent me an Abus Plus cutaway and the special Abus pick. Even staring down at the discs, it was pretty tricky to get everybody lined up properly. The tolerances are really tight and every position has a false gate. I think Abloy is still king here, but Abus sits comfortably with Anchor Las as a close second.
You can totally strip it down after you remove that little allen screw I pointed out. The tip comes out and it all falls apart. Polish the parts that contact each other, apply a light coating of oil, and reassemble. All in all it is only a 10 minute job & very easy. Be careful when you size the tip tho, don't cut it down too small. Use a key to determine the width you need.
I saw john falle demonstrate his tool on a couple of abus granit locks in the LSS+ videos, he made it look pretty easy but we all know how that goes... I do wanna have a go at one some day though, at the risk of my sanity (or what's left of it anyway).
I'd love to get one like that! I've never seen anything with more than 4 cuts before... there should always be at least one zero disc though. Remember there's no binding order with these, everything binds pretty much at the same time so you can pick straight from back to front if you take your time. I think the same goes even for the abus ones, you only need to go back through them cos of the false gates.
The key bidding on the first Shenling Disk Detainer looks almost identical to the cheap one I bough here in Australia. Safe to say they're using the same mold (which is expected from these chinese brands)
I find it much easier (and faster) to rotate everything clockwise with a flat piece of steel. That means all the 0 cuts are already set and reduces the lock to essentially 3 or 4 discs which actually need set... anything which isn't set at 0 only needs turned back a tiny amount to set, so if you turn back a little and don't get anything, you can just return it to 0 and you'll usually feel it pop back. You need to get a bit whimsical using that tool if the front disc isn't a 0 cut though.
Hey a Chinese fan here! :) Firstly thank u so much for the wonderful contents, and nice numbering of the title lol. Recently i have being trying to choose a decent bike lock so by chance i had a glance at your channel---- and fall in love with it! Here i have a few questions: which kind of lock would u recommend, out of disc detainer, flat(biconcave sides ver.), irregular cross-sectional (eg. tubular, S/L/U/卍 shape) lock, or curved keyhole(like the one in vid. 627), in terms of picking difficulty(average no. of minutes taken for picking) for an ordinary thief? In China, most of thief in urban area use technical ways to pick locks instead of broken them(seems like the opposite of westerners lol) , so hardness is not my major concern. By the way, i have noticed that most of ur picking videos of Chinese locks are all featuring cheap old padlock of a strange brand that one can probably only find on neighbourhood shops... is that because u bought most of them from Africa? Why not try some newer toys! The types of lock mentioned above are all quite popular in China nowadays and can be easily find on Taobao(a better version of Ebay lol), and it has an overseas direct mail function. Hence if u know some mandarin (seems like u do?!) u can probably directly buy stuff from it. Also, it is a pity that almost all Chinese locksmith could not speak a language other than chinese, so there is a leak of communication between them and foreign fellows...
Great info Bill. I bought one of those picks from China but when it arrived the pick tip was snapped off in the bag so never got chance to use it. I was thinking of some kind of "T" shaped finishing nail to replace it What do you think? I have single disk picked an easy one though
I think the tip/rod part, was brass/copper plated. when I polished it, it went from copper color, to silver. the rest stayed the same silver color. I still can't open one of these locks yet because either my tip is too long, or i'm not doing it right. I noticed that i can't free spin between the discs, so im not sure how i can move to the next disc without undoing the previous one.
Excellent demo. Can the pick be stripped totally down to sandpaper things smooth, or do you just do it the best way you can, as is? I suspect the tension part or T bar can't be totally removed? I'm not permitted to play with my detainer pick until that big fella in the red suit pays a visit :-)))
Ouch. I have a few that I can't crack for love nor money, I know the feeling. I've never played with an abus but I hear with the proper tools they can be picked fairly quickly with practice. Do you have one of the proper decoders? Falle makes one, jaako's is supposed to be really good too.
So your tensioning it the same direction you pushed the disk before you started? Then you start picking the disk by rotating them counter clockwise? That tells me that you have to distinguished between when you have set the disk and when you maxed out the travel in the disk in the wrong direction... which means you have to then turn it the opposite direction to set that disk. Hope that makes any sense? Anybody know?
I take it that these are really not all that good of a lock? Abus or Abloy or ASSA which lock would you pick for the best security on an paddle lock situation?
CRAZYD3MON96 And about 10x to 20x the price! And they can still be picked. I picked an Abloy and a Kryptonite 8 days ago. Picked Abloy Classic in the past. Only Protec 2 is still unpicked.
Thanks for the info Bill. I was wondering: Abus has a lock with free floating disk that have to be first alligned with the key and then the disk are turned similar to a disc detainer lock. Is it possible to pick these the same way?
I tried picking my krptonite lock but for some reason when i turn the first teeth at the buttom. It wont allow. Me to access. The second tooth because the alignment be turn another way preventing the pick from moving to the next tooth
Jrezky That's pretty average when ordering from China. I usually expect 3-6 weeks. At banggood there is actually 2 item set for 10$, where you can get front&rear tension disc detainers in a set. I will have to try that rear one on some old Abloy classics. Extremely good value, even if the quality most likely is very poor.
+Sven Kristoff Hahah, yeah I assume the meaning of the name has become lost in translation, but it seems Chinese companies that sell cheap, bulk items usually tends to have names that otherwise would be strings of random words. And to +RelationGames, yes these feel very cheap. When I made that comment they did actually sell the items separately because that's how I ordered it, but I assume that was changed permanently afterwards because it hasn't ever gone back. And for the record it feels quite cheap and flimsy, but nothing has broken on me so far even with medium wear. Maybe I was just lucky.
How much do these locks vary? What I mean is, is there a one general all disc retainer lock opening pick, or does one have to get multiple of these for different types of locks?
jopiira I heard the simplest tool is a metal stick with a small 90 degree angle at the tip, and then you spin that around. But I haven't seen anyone pick one of them successfully.
Maybe biggest problem with Abloy Classic is with that lock doesn't give any feedback? What I know even lock smiths in finland 5 million nation we have had about 20 million those locks and still it will with lock smiths more than 10 minutes.
Why is btw? That it doesn't give feedback? I'm just starting with my first disc lock, so I don't know anything about them really, except for the mechanics.

Great video Bill, will definitely refer back to this later this week when my disc detainer pick finally gets here ,thanks again!
I'll tell you what -- that tool does work, but Bill still makes it look easy.
Great demo, as always, Bill!
Thanx Bill, I've got lots of these but only ever opened one... But now that I've watched this I'm gonna give it a try, I had no idea what I was doing b4 now...so...

Wow this is the first time I've heard of a disk detainer locks. Thanks!
One of the greatest bands of all time, the amount of times I've lit a long in up to these is uncountable. Respect!

bosnianbill My first one took about 2 hours! They're not too hard now.
Felled a Kryptonite last week, but was beaten by a Baton 11 disc!
That second one was a fast opening, well done. I'll have to try tuning my pick and see if I can get as fast as you. I manage that sort of time occasionally, but normally it takes a few minutes.

Bill's the best! No question.

Very well done video and helpful advice in the comments section, thanks!

you can tell its a good lock cuz it says super right on the pack ;)
Cheers for that, I'll look into it.

What do you think?
I have single disk picked an easy one though
Dubble snowman and a tenchen rench one of the round snowman balls are small er than the bottom so very effective bill

Very nice....
have a go at an abus plus disc detainer...
What does it mean "False Set"? - Thank you for your awesome videos.
DuarteOnTheLine It turns a bit, so for a split second you think it is open!

Give it a little time & practice. You will be able to open them soon.
nice picking, do you have by any chance a pick like that for sale?
the set screws holding the pick shaft came stripped.
What about folse gates leading me down the garden path to nowhere?
Able to see through solid steel with a single pick... : ) Thanks Bill
En que pagina de internet puedo conseguir esta herramienta y cual es el nombre de esa herramienta . Gracias
Can these open those big circle lock
I take it that these are really not all that good of a lock? Abus or Abloy or ASSA which lock would you pick for the best security on an paddle lock situation?
Without a doubt Abloy those things are nearly flawless
CRAZYD3MON96 And about 10x to 20x the price!
And they can still be picked. I picked an Abloy and a Kryptonite 8 days ago. Picked Abloy Classic in the past.
Only Protec 2 is still unpicked.
can you feel the difference if you grab 2 discs at once?
Thanks for the info Bill. I was wondering: Abus has a lock with free floating disk that have to be first alligned with the key and then the disk are turned similar to a disc detainer lock. Is it possible to pick these the same way?

nyree281 That's because they are far better locks than these!
Forte
will this work with bike locks?
It depends on whether the keyway is large enough to fit the tool into.
I hope abus granite locks are still reasonably safe to use? O.o
This is a little unsettling hahaha...... f^^'
You can tell how old this is. Bill isn't using his Lock Lab/LPL pick.
this is a $5 tool at banggood
Thanks for the tip, I was just about to drop 10$ on DealExtreme for the same thing.
No problem! It will take a while to arrive, however. Mine was probably 3 weeks at the minimum.
Jrezky

+Jrezky Had to google "banggood" before typing it into my browser at work lol...could be a lot of different websites with that name :|
+Sven Kristoff Hahah, yeah I assume the meaning of the name has become lost in translation, but it seems Chinese companies that sell cheap, bulk items usually tends to have names that otherwise would be strings of random words.

If you listen to this video like he is talking and teaching about dirty stuff, well, your welcome.
How much do these locks vary? What I mean is, is there a one general all disc retainer lock opening pick, or does one have to get multiple of these for different types of locks?

I'm just starting with my first disc lock, so I don't know anything about them really, except for the mechanics.
And it not have anykind of springs
Is there any Chinese lock that you could not pick.
+Luke Linsmeyer Yes, maybe a kryptonite someone used in China and then decided he'd sell it (WHY?) ...
No. Probably not.
+Hadinos Sanosam just looking to what looks to steer clear of for my personal locking needs.
Does he have a Facebook
majstore
I really think u r limit correct politically. and this is because all most chinese don't care what happened in U.S. u even really don't known who designed it. if u talking this with Arab or black man, I don't think u will like this.
+Zijian Xi LOL
of course. the ever lock. u didn't succeed designed and made in China. in this way u didn't say a word about China.
+Zijian Xi man, i swear even google translator i looking at your comments like "O_o what?"
