I think one of the scariest hurdles for the beginner lock picker is accepting that the tools you buy don't necessarily perform to their potential or even work out of the box, be it finishing/polishing pin-tumbler picks or taking a file to a disc-detainer tool like this. It's intimidating to spend money on these shiny new items, wait for them to arrive, then start hacking them up!
While waiting for Sparrows to finally launch the tool you and Bill designed, I went to buy one of these cheap chinese tool to try and learn a bit more about how to pick such locks. And thanks for your guide, it is definitely necessary to file it down slightly to get it to work properly. Finally managed to pick a cheap chinese lock in a couple of minutes. Once the tool (you guys made) is in the stores, I would definitely get one...

Thankyou for explaining and demonstrating how small these tips need to be to be able to move through the tolerance gaps between the disc cuts. I'm also guessing that the flatter heads on the tension screws of your modified tool are much more comfortable than the round heads of the original. You could probably use the location pins from an injection moulding cast to make your own stronger tips too

Good thing that it happened not on the disk of the bike :) If it wasn't for your explanation, I would have struggled quite a lot to unlock it, if I could at all, since i have no wxperience in lock picking. If the lock is locked, but not on the disc brake, then just throw it away. Cos if your key doesn't work then you can't practically use the lock itself.

The bottom tension tool is not salvageable... no way to fit it past profile discs. That said, I may do a video on making one for cheap with simple tools.

TL;DW: 3 tests (Cutter, Heat, Lever) every test max. 2 minutes -> The pro fails to destroy it. The cutter and the burner get 2 layers each. Thats all. They show the production and the building of the invention. Different strings, with different strenghts (heatresistent, cuttingresistent etc.) combine the whole thing. But what they don't do: They do not try to destroy the eyeletes, or the lock itself, nor do they try to pick it. That would be interesting to see :)

I found it really helpful to simply file a little bit of of the the outer (tensioning) part on two opposing sites so the big screws don't slip. It's also possible to just tighten them down more but you can assemble and disassemble it this way without tools so it's compact and easy to store/carry around.
+Jay H In the handle of the tool that the pick inside the lock is controlled with, two set screws clamp onto the pick to lock it to the control handle. Filing small flats on the pick where the set screws sit helps them lock to the handle.
for plumbing solder you want silver solder, as in a silver tin alloy (about 4% silver, remainder tin) this will be very strong but melt easily with a propane torch, even a butane torch will work. this is similar to the gunsmith's solder he discussed. leaded electronics solder will be much weaker, but it's better than nothing.
I would get mine to nice finish - rust prevention and aesthetics, and would add the black oxide to the pick - for lubrication, rust prevention... and also aesthetics
I only have one disc lock, an old Chubb (no number or model visible other than "made in Finland") and where you have the spinner instead it has a solid slot as part of the whole case. This means I can't even tension the lock as it gets stuck in this solid front door. To get around this, I would have to cut a deep notch into the tension section of the tool, or perhaps there is a better way? I much prefer normal padlocks and single pin picking, but I thought I'd give this a go and seem to have chosen a tricky one to start with!

@@Sciguy95 Or maybe it's the fact that the Imperial System has two glaringly obvious benefits over the Metric system. 1) As far as real world applications when it comes to measuring small distances, the Imperial system is far more accurate. Once you get down past the MM the next unit of measure is what, the micrometer? That's a huge jump. With the Imperial system the inch is divisible to an almost infinite amount. 2) The second benefit, and my personal favorite, being that it really seems to piss off all the metric people.
Flat tips are not hard to make. Step 1: find some relativly thin sheet metal and cut it down to a small rectangle Step 2: sand it down to appropriate thickness either with a tool or sandpaper if you have alot of time. Step 3: remove any temper and drill through it in the middle with a 1.5 mm bit. Step 4: get your solder and flux and fuse them together. Step 5: clean it up with a file and some fine sandpaper. This is not necessary but i went ahead and retempered the tip to 58 hrc.
Ok, a) that isn’t that easy a recipe, either. B) LPL said that the main issue would be in the brazing. Which is definitely something most people do not have the tools and skill for.

There is one modification that I did to mine that if you have machine tools is very helpful. I remade the tensioning portion of mine to make the nose longer to fit in the very recessed locks like the Abus 37/60. A friend of mine is a tool maker and we made it out of brass which not only looks great, but functions very well.

Do You "think/know" if that makes them "harder" to use?? (It picks some locks fine, but other that are "cheaper-chinese" brands, I can not open, no matter what. I "spp" them with a wide tension wrench and a L shaped tool. so I know they work.) Anyway I love Your customized picks, it is easy to see, how much better they function..
Solder No solder ideally machine from a solid sock or hot forge then file, use heat treatable steel. No machine shop then other option use a tungsten inert gas micro welder ($500) and fabricate the pick. Grub screws to secure the pic rod rather dodgy use a shaft collar clamp approach (google it) will take a lot more torque.
I bought one from amazon and was just about to return it because the tip was turning and it wouldn’t go in far enough to tension the transparent lock that came with it. Before I start trying to dismantle it. Could you tell me if the only way to do it is to remove the tip. As it is that’s the only way I can see to get access to tighten the rod to the spinner. By the way, you da man.

I just buy it. It is garbage. After filling it, it does not stick to rod. Soldering with normal SnPb electronic solder doesn't hold up long. But I manage to open acrylic padlock few times after this "improvements". As always, thanks for info. And Sparrows doesn't ship to Poland :(
Hey LPL! This is the type of lock I have the most trouble with. I got a silver bullet and can now pick a plastic practice lock with no problem, but can't seem to get the same feedback with other cheapo Chinese locks. Nothing seems to bind or click the same. I know how they work but just can't get the "feel" down. Could you please do a video on what to feel for with these? BosnianBill did one but it didn't help much, and your videos seem to be more like "click on 3, click on 4 and it's open". Nobody seems to have an in depth video that resonates or explains the intricacies and that's what I'm looking for. Thanks and have a nice day 😊

Goddamn I have this thing and I have done the modifications and now I'm trying to open my first disc detainer lock which is some random lock no idea what brand it does not say. And I can feel the discs turning but I absolutely have no feel if I am getting anything in the correct position.

Hi there, useful information but there is another simple thing that I saw and will probably do to my pick, when you go "in" even at the seventh disc you still have a centimeter free and when on first disc it's not inside as you hold it with your hand, would it be better to cut a part of the shaft, it would be all in and enough space to get to the last disc, I don't know if it's a good idea or not, I'll wait to see if somebody reply, thanks.

Mm, cm, inches, feet, yards. Same as the UK and Canada to varying degrees.

FYI, this tool uses M5 screws for the handles, I replaced the existing ones with 2 M5x30mm socket head hex bolts

Are you tensioning the lock from the rear or front? Many will now stop you tensioning the lock from the front.
You should start selling your version on covert instruments. I’m gonna attempt to do this on my pick but I’m preys sure I’m going to screw it up. Good luck.
Goddamn I have this thing and I have done the modifications and now I'm trying to open my first disc detainer lock which is some random lock no idea what brand it does not say. And I can feel the discs turning but I absolutely have no feel if I am getting anything in the correct position.

Thanks. I doubt you could pick the 88 with this. They have front and rear butterfly discs, which rules out traditional tensioning.

Instead of locktighting the the screws to hold the end in place why not file some flats on the sides to give the screws something to grab on to?

Probably... try finding some 96/4 tin/silver solder. Common, strong, low temp, and easy to use. 👍

Hi there, useful information but there is another simple thing that I saw and will probably do to my pick, when you go "in" even at the seventh disc you still have a centimeter free and when on first disc it's not inside as you hold it with your hand, would it be better to cut a part of the shaft, it would be all in and enough space to get to the last disc, I don't know if it's a good idea or not, I'll wait to see if somebody reply, thanks.
