The whole offense look behind them is dumb. Why not have the player in the middle of the line have his hand in the air facing the returner while the rest of the player have their bodies turned toward the defense but watching his hand. When the ball is caught he puts his hand down signifying the ball is in play.

For future reference, mano y mano means "hand to hand" not "man to man." It's still kind of applicable but maybe just "one on one" would be better. But sure, let's find us someone who can kick well AND run down a starting tailback. I won't hold my breath.

The XFL, not sure about the UFL, let the kickoff team opt to either do a traditional onside attempt or choose basically 1 play, 4th and 12 from their own 28. If they got to the 40, then they kept the ball and regular play resumed, but I don't remember all the details about penalties affecting ball placement, etc. The kicking team still had to declare either way. It would have been obvious because they would line up in a "traditional NFL style" kick formation or the 4th and 12 formation.

I think putting the ball on the 35 or 40 if not returned is too much. There is a real reason to control which side of the 50 you play on and if you start off at the 40 instead of the 23, you only need one first down to be almost in field goal range. That is not a good thing in my book.

It doesn't make sense for the Texans return team players to be facing their returner and away from their blocks. Simply face the kick team and react when they move forward to cover the kickoff. The coverage team still has to move forward when the returner catches the ball. That's their visual indication the play has started.

You obviously cannot do this on regular running plays as it is illegal procedure, but I suspect any movement not over the line won't be deemed offside. You know, like how safeties and linebackers fake a blitz but don't go over the line. So I would have them all face the receiving team except for the one "shot caller" who watches the kick and calls out "go." The normal rule of the defending team not calling out offensive signals would have to extend here on the kickout.

Strategies to limit opportunities for Kick Returns will be discouraged more severely. All no-yards penalties - which are assigned when the cover team invades a five-yard halo around the returner as he fields a punt - will be 15 yards. Previously, a no-yards penalty was 15 yards only if the ball had been fielded in the air - and only five yards if the punt had bounced. They need to give the kicking team an option in the fourth quarter if they need a come-back when losing other than an onside kick, like in the XFL, allow them an option of 4th down and 15 from their own 25 yard line.

You could also do this: You start on your 5 yard line and have 4 downs, no first downs. If you get a TD, then you get 2 TDs. The extra point works the same. A kick is 2 pts, a normal 2 pt would be 4. You could potentially get 16 points from that.

I think there will be more mass momentum collisions. The kicking team can kick left, right, center and focus their coverage to that point, the receiving team will be blocking at right angles due to reaction time for blocking strategies. I have seen the ball spotted at the point it goes out of the side lines. Low spinning kicks will evolve to make it more difficult to catch or guess where it will bounce or roll. Target zone then end zone still goes out to the twenty.

Overtime rules were completely different between the two for over a decade. The hash marks are still much further apart on a college field, and the goalposts are wider. College: One foot down is in. NFL: two feet, or a knee, elbow, hand, etc. are required to land inbounds.
The rules have NEVER been the same.

    • @larryrobertson4099
      @larryrobertson4099 3 месяца назад

I agree but all those differences are minor compared to the kick off rules now in the NFL. You get a penalty if you move until the ball is hits the ground or is touched or you have to notify everyone of an onsides kick or the ball has to land w/i a 20-yard area of the field during a kickoff, give me and NFL football fans a break. This is liberal woke sh*t and it's the camel's nose under the tent with more sissy changes to come. Eventually, if the woke liberals get their way, there'll be no more tackling just pulling a flag to stop the play. and just standup blocking with all the other flag football sissy rules.

annnnnnd at the high school level, it's different from both college and the NFL. 12 min quarters (at least in my state), no replay reviews, overtime procedures can vary, the kickoff line was further up. These NFL kickoff rule changes make the NFL the National Sissy League (NSL) and are a camel's nose under the tent, meaning more to come. Like no more tackles just pulling flags from opposing player carrying the ball (flag football like in grade school), no more heavy blocks at the line of scrimmage with players just standing up to get in the way but no touching. And finally, once all of that is in place, women have to be allowed to play all positions in NSL football to completely 'woke' the sport.

It will be interesting to watch teams develop new strategies. I was hoping you'd go into a bit more detail about what movements the lines can make. Once the ball touches ground/is touched, can either line move in either direction? My guess is that each line's players will not always move towards the ball carrier, rather, they will form into a predetermined pattern (like a 3-4 defense, etc). I also wonder if there will be any advantage for the kicker to run forward (right after the kick) and try to become part of the line, or if the odds are better if he stays back.

As a fan and not a coach I see a lot of opportunities for really inventive returns that will make the game exciting. Props to the NFL for not sitting stagnant and trying to improve a part of the game that was easy to tinker with without destroying the integrity of the game. Cleveland kicked their first two kickoffs directly into the endzone and the ball was spotted at the 30.
The same holds true even if the ball is kicked directly over the end line.
I believe teams will eventually try to kick it inside the 5 yard and the goal line. If it is returned you have some chance of stopping the return inside the 30. If it bounces into to end and downed, it’s the 20. Or, just booming and spot at the 30.

Interesting vid. American Football fan and player. Played HS and some College (at MIT, Division III, wasn't a big sports school, lol, basically if you played HS Football and were interested, you were on the team, lol) No scholarships, so pretty pure Football imo. Played defense, had to learn a 4-4-3 Defense, which I had never experienced before, this was 1980s. Mostly watch and am interested in College Football, as so many of the Pros were just money grubbing divas. HS and College Football evolved over my lifetime, some innovations going up and or down the hierarchy. This is an interesting rule change. I'm an MD for 30 years so understand very well Head/Brain injuries. The evolving concerns of concussions, often mild, but cumulative. Know a lot about Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy. Main reason for rule change, imo, is to prevent brain injuries, played on Kickoff teams. High speed helmet to helmet collisions, often unavoidable, but not so great for that brain thing we carry around in our skull. Kickers got better and stronger over time often kicking through the end zone, so kickoffs had become rather boring. Very interesting rule change, will see how it works out. Likely will reduce high speed helmet to helmet collisions and serious heard injury, that's a plus. How the tactics of the kickoff will adapt, I have a few thoughts on that. Retired MD, so am hoping to do some volunteer HS Coaching in the future and, if this works as intended will likely filter down to College and HS levels. Great vid.

Obviously, not everybody has to stand still until the ball hits ground or receiver -- the kicker and receiver can move. How many can be back to receive? What spacing is required between players? Must the blockers & tacklers be touching the 35 and 40 to begin with? Why wouldn't a kicker just line-drive the ball, bounce it in the landing zone, and into the end zone, passed the receivers?

One of the stupidest NFL rules ever allows a kick returner to step out of bounds before touching the ball, then (while still out of bounds) reaching back into the field of play for the ball, which results in a penalty for the other team for "kicking" the ball out of bounds. I mean, WTF?!?

I wish they had some the 4th and 15 play instead. It's a real football play, it reduces the chance of injury, and it preserves the possibility of surprise by doing for it. Converting is also more a test of real football, rather than an inside kick which is a mostly random play.

Simply moving the kickoff point back to the 25 yard line would solve it. This, in a round about way, creates the 5 yard halo around the kicked ball in Canadian football.

the thing i don't like about these new rules is the kicker is punished for kicking the ball into the end zone (the receiving team gets the ball on the 35 yard line). also giving the receiving team the ball on the 40 yard line is too much of a reward when the kicker misses the "landing zone". games are going to be lost by kickers who cannot find the landing zone.

I give it 2 weeks and the fan base will demand kickoffs go back to what kickoffs were last year.
If the NFL really wanted to stop touchbacks and increase play I have a very simple fix. Kick the ball from the 25. Any ball kicked out of the end zone results in 2 points for receiving team. Any ball fielded or unfielded and/or downed in the end zone results in the kicking team getting 2 points and the receiving team getting the ball at the 30. Onside kicks still exist without a declaration, meaning surprises still exist. There I fixed it. That was simple.

You can't change rules midseason because some teams would be unfairly penalized based on playing style and personnel.

Make it a single point, and make the field 110 yards long, and also wider. And add an extra player on each side. Then we could call it "Canadian football." It would definitely be more exciting than the NFL.

Thius was the best part of the XFL in 2023. I was disappointed that the UFL didn't keep it for the 2024 season.
Now, the NFL need to implement the 4th and 12 yards, after the team behind scores, in the 4th qtr.

Not so much in the regular season but I could see lots of teams taking advantage of this deep in the playoffs.(scenario from last years playoffs) Choose between Jamyr Gibbs or Jameson Williams to kick to..? Yea, Your better off kicking it through the end zone.
