My family had always been big on football but I never gave it a true shot…. Superbowl this past Sunday was my first EVER full football game watched all the way through and I fell in love!! I spent the whole next night watching reels and highlights and backstories and whatnot. THISSSS is exactly what I need rn because I now have self appointed football homework 😂😂 Thank you ever so kindly 🙏🏽
Watching a football game with football players, as I did in college, provides a unique perspective. They told that, reputation aside, offensive linemen are some of the smartest people on the field. Their roles are often described as "applied geometry".
This is true. The QB and the center are often the smartest on the team. The TE is often highly intelligent as well, and many FBs have good smarts. Seems that blocking requires intelligence. The TE has to block almost as often as the offensive line and then also know when to run a route.
I have been watching football for most of my 55 years, know every position at heart, I think of me as and advanced football fan. The best 10 minutes I have watched in a long time about football positions! Great work!
Honestly american football is more analogous to chess than association football. Different positions with different strengths and weakness all needing to be used in such a way to overcome the strategies of the other team. Anticipating their next moves in order to find weaknesses in their offensive/defensive tactics. For a sport thats stereotyped as having a meathead fanbase, it has a lot going on under the surface.
I absolutely love this analogy, and you're spot on. To build on it, unlike Chess pieces that follow their designated moves, the element of human unpredictability is significant. You can devise the perfect strategy to outmaneuver your opponent, but the excitement of the game is heightened by unforeseen events like a dropped pass, a twisted ankle, or even the ball being dropped before crossing the goal line for a touchdown celebration. All of it makes you yearn for the next slate of games to come around.
Just starting to get into NFL after 40+ years; Rugby fan (both codes) from UK. This is undoubtedly THE best upload on YT for someone looking to learn the positional basics of the sport. Outstanding work mate 👏 👌 👍
I wish I would've known about this video when I began trying to explain football to my better half. Thank you for showing me the error of my ways as I issue a much needed long overdue apology lmao
Man, im saftey and i absolutely love my position and i had no idea how to play all i knew was to stop whoever has the ball or do blitz and go in on line or corner back and know i understand the game a lot more thanks!

This has been very helpful thank you, my son is playing 3rd/4th grade football. Not an athlete at all in my case, was in high-school band but could care less about learning anything outside of scoring and some fouls. Now I'm trying to catch up and understand for my son, when your kid is interested in a sport or hobby it's time to learn something.
This is a really good video! As a nigerian that has followed the sport for a few years now, it was important. I pretty much already understood the game, but this has helped me actually see more like the difference between slot and outside receivers. Thanks! I will recommend your channel to my fellow Nigerians!
All around great video, the explanations were very simple and were easy to pick up on. People are all saying how the music is annoying but I don’t see anything wrong with it.
This is a great explanation that goes beyond an “elementary” level of understanding. It’s great if you want to learn about the game to chat about with friends.
Am from South Africa, since the playoff started I’ve tried to watch the games. The frustrating thing about American football is the constant ads😭Am used to soccer where theys nonstop playing for 45 mins
Coming from the UK I would’ve understood very little of this except star roles, but hammering 2K NFL for a few years I learnt all these spots except a couple subtleties - great to learn thanks. What I’ve never learnt is some of the rules such as who’s allowed to line up where, who is eligible to receive, offside etc.
If there's one thing I've learned from watching football for years, it's that you'll never stop learning new things. In some games there will be rules even the announcers (who may even be former NFL players themselves) weren't even aware of.
The formation rules aren't that bad. An offense must have seven players within a yard of the line of scrimmage ("on the line"), and the other four players lined up farther back. All players in the backfield are eligible receivers. Of the seven on the line, the two outside players are eligible, and the five in the middle (almost always the center, guards, and tackles) are ineligible. The two outside players that complete the line will vary: for example, if a tight end and wide receiver are lined up on the same side of the field, one will be on the line and the other a yard back, but either arrangement is allowed. This is a lot for the players and refs to follow, so restricted jersey numbers are used to make it manageable. Ineligible players wear jersey numbers in the 50-79 range; other numbers are eligible. A formation is illegal when a player with an eligible number lines up in an ineligible position or vice versa (unless they declare themselves to the refs, this is occasionally done and will be announced over the PA). In practice, a violation of this rules happens when a tight end and WR on the same side of the field are both on the line. If this illegal formation penalty is announced, the wide receiver will be said to be "covering" the tight end (who is thus ineligible while wearing an eligible number). On passing plays, the ineligible receivers aren't allowed to go more than a yard downfield -- this prevents them from confusing or hindering defensive backs. If a pass is thrown in this situation, the penalty is "ineligible man downfield". When this happens in practice, it's usually because a play has broken down, and a scrambling QB throws an unplanned desperation pass without realizing a lineman is downfield. Offsides is straightforward: players on either side of the ball must line up entirely behind the ball. The narrow strip of field the length of the football is called the "neutral zone"; it's offsides against either team if a player is lined up with any part of their body in the neutral zone.
nuclear physics is much more clearer to me than this sport really. And I want to learn it and watch it so much! Thank you for this comprehesive video!!!
This is a great video to start. But honestly, it's not that bad. As soon as you learn that a team are just trying to get 10 yards, and have 4 attempts to do so (shown on TV by trying to get from the blue line to the yellow line), and if they make it, they get another 4 attempts to make the next 10 yards, you have it. So all 1st attempts are 1st and 10. If they make say, three yards it's 2nd and 7 (yards to go). That's it really. One you get that, the rest falls into place.
You're more than welcome and appreciate the shout out from Ireland! And you're not wrong, folks in that state LOVE their Packers for sure, especially they're the only team in the state.

The key thing to grasp is that American football is essentially a stylized wargame. Two armies are clashing on a battlefield, with the goal being to advance the ball all the way to the opposing endzone, capturing territory as they go. If the advancing army fails to reach its goal within the limits of the prescribed rules (a whole other podcast in itself), the enemy army takes possession of the ball and tries to advance it in just the same way in the other direction. The general idea is to get the ball across the opposing endline as often as possible, while preventing the enemy from getting across one's own. Each team has its own separate offensive and defensive squads. One specializes in attacking, the other in defending. And all of the fancy plays that each side draws up for its players to carry out are exactly analogous to the battle plans of generals on the battlefield, with all of the same maneuvers: massed attacks, feints, flanking, etc. Football is a fascinating and surprisingly brainy game, however it may appear to the casual onlooker.
@@ArpitGarg-zb8junot sure didn’t read above but the offensive team gets 4 attempts to make when watching tv to make yellow line. Failure to do so other team gets ball.
@@jimnewlhonestly a great way to put it… O line and D line battling like heavy tanks… WR’s and DB’s flying around the field like high altitude jets… RB’s and LB’s getting down and dirty like foot soldiers… captains on the field trying to keep order… and a general watching over the battlefield trying to make adjustments as it unfolds.
I know this is the basics, but The only thing I would change is that Defensive Tackles aren’t necessarily Nose Tackles as well depending on the base formation and team uses. A nose tackle is more for occupying blockers and taking up space allowing linebackers and safeties to fly through the line freely over their pure pass rushing ability
Nice you should become a 49ers fan. They have the most faithful fan base. They also have the most interesting players, what's the funniest post-game interviews in a coach that is better than any other coach in the entire league. Hopefully we won the Super Bowl and then you become a fan. Also this sport is better than any sport that your country has and I don't even know where you're from. Basketball is great too but it's hard to find a team that won't disappoint you every year so I just choose to be fans of several teams but the Warriors are great and when they're good they are the most exciting team to watch in history
You're welcome! A bit confused on what you mean, are you suggesting a video on the NFL new Playoff format? Because if so, that is totally in the works right now and hopefully will be ready come playoff time! 😎
I never knew that each team had so many different roles. So, depending on if your team is on offense or defense, you'll have different players/roles on the field and there are infinite substitutions? It feels weird to me that half the team is resting while waiting to again be in the correct phase of the game to play. Or do teams sometimes field a mix of offensive and defensive players in case they steal the ball and have a chance of turning defense into offense?
No mix. After a turnover (fumble recovery or interception by a defender), play continues until he is either tackled, runs out of bounds, or scores a touchdown. If he does not score a touchdown, the clock stops and play does not resume until the opposing offensive and defensive teams come onto the field. You must not think like Euro football or basketball where the players can be on offense or defense in any given moment. Rather, each team has an offense and defense and each of those teams come onto the field depending on who takes possession of the ball.
LOVE this! Indeed I have thought about updating the We Are Champions videos but I'm leaning towards every 5 years to do so. That way the channel won't be filled with just those types of videos so what I need to do is start cranking out more content, lol. Thank you again for the request, you ROCK! 😎
The defensive 'nose tackle' is properly known as the 'nose guard' or 'middle guard' and is positioned directly opposite the center. I know this as I played that position for three years. Defensive tackles are called just that...'defensive tackles." They line up in the gap between the offensive guards and tackles.

Thank tou so much for making this video. Can u plz make one for the 2023 new Tournament rules?
Thank you!!
You're welcome! A bit confused on what you mean, are you suggesting a video on the NFL new Playoff format? Because if so, that is totally in the works right now and hopefully will be ready come playoff time! 😎
I’m so thankful for this video! I’m the first girl to play at my school and I had to make sure I knew everything 😂
Congrats on making the team! Best of luck this upcoming season, you're gonna crush it!
@@LurksLessons I’m playing tight end and I’m kind of nervous !! But thank you so much ❤️

You are so underrated, this is so helpful and well done!! Thank you!
Thank you, I'm happy that you found it helpful! You ROCK! 😎
Thank you, Lurk. I love watching NFL football and your explanation of the game helped me learn more.
Happy to hear that and you're most welcome. Thanks for watching and for commenting! You ROCK!
Can´t wait for watch 20 game minutes and 2 hours of sponsors!!
Great video, although I already knew most of what was covered, I still learned some new stuff and the great animation makes this video awesome
Thank you!! All your football vids have been SO helpful. Please do more. Btw all the music for your football videos are 🔥
Appreciate the kind words! Yep, gonna really get at it this year in 2024, so stay tuned! You ROCK!
Excellent presentation.
Subscribed! Excellent content my friend! 👍👍
If you could please lower the music a bit that would be helpful to me. (Head injury. 🙄)
Perfectly explained 👌🏼

Maybe the Eagles coaches should be watching this.
The same guy who invented the most trendiest play in all of football, the tush push?

Amazing video!!
Thank you. This video has really helped me understand American Football
Amazing video! Superb animations
As a Real Madrid fan im here because of the ‘save us Brock Purdy’ memes
As a football fan (the real one ⚽️ ofc) hating on Kansas and Travis Kelce is what got me interested in the NFL lmao
@@vg1808Okay.
American Football: a 60 minute game that lasts 3 hours, with 11 minutes of total action.
Played at maximum speed and intensity. You’ll see nobody jogging.
Just wait until you have to figure out all the rules and penalties involved. Have patience.
just got madden because of ea play and man this sport is so much better now that i understand it
hey do you mind giving an update on all 4 major sports winners please thank you
LOVE this! Indeed I have thought about updating the We Are Champions videos but I'm leaning towards every 5 years to do so. That way the channel won't be filled with just those types of videos so what I need to do is start cranking out more content, lol. Thank you again for the request, you ROCK! 😎
Wow, very well made tutorial
Thank you for the kind remarks and for watching!
I play pee wee football and my positions on defense are safety and cornerback. On offense i am a wide receiver.
1:28 FB usually receives lower wages
The defensive 'nose tackle' is properly known as the 'nose guard' or 'middle guard' and is positioned directly opposite the center. I know this as I played that position for three years. Defensive tackles are called just that...'defensive tackles." They line up in the gap between the offensive guards and tackles.
Would love a quick guide to reading defense from a QB's POV
That's a solid suggestion! I'll add it to the list :)
Used to be big into football. Haven’t watched in a good few years. This vid helped out.
Welcome back!
This explains it so well
