Every play potentially takes 40+ seconds off the clock. By deliberately letting the 40 second play clock expire, they have traded a 5 yard penalty for those 40 seconds. By rule, you can't do this twice in the same play sequence or there's an additional 15 yard penalty, so after the delay of game, they lined up, and near when the play clock was going to expire, they deliberately went offsides, thus killing another 40 seconds off the clock. My all-time favorite “knowing the rules“ moment was done by Buddy Ryan back in the late 80s when he coached the Eagles. It was called the “Polish punt team“. Follow me on this..
-There was about 30 seconds left in the game.
-The Eagles had the ball on 4th down.
-They were up by 4 points.
    -They lined up to punt.
Buddy sent out 22 guys on the punt coverage team. Back then, they wouldn’t disallow a play to start if there were too many men on the field(They have since changed that rule so in that scenario, the refs would throw the flag and not even allow the play to happen).
So basically Buddy figured that by sending 22 guys out there, the opposing team wouldn’t have a chance to have any sort of return. But they also didn’t want to accept the penalty because time would runoff the clock since they don’t put time back on a clock due to a penalty like that.
One of the most brilliant things I’ve ever seen in any sport.

The stepping out of bounds to receive the kickoff rule should be changed. I've seen players do that multiple times. It should be down where the player steps out of bounds.

If kickers don’t like it, they don’t have to kick to the corner.

@@MegaBrokenstar But that's the point. The kick is in the field of play not OB. If it is in play, the receiving team should have to field it not take advantage of a really stupid loophole.

@@nikolatesla5553 again, it’s super easy for kickers to just not put it within a body’s length of the sideline. If they want to keep trying to land it in the extreme corner to the benefit of their coverage guys, then the possibility of this should remain as a drawback. It’s not a stupid loophole. It’s literally just the rules that apply everywhere else in the game applying here too. Any player touching the ball while out of bounds on any play ever in football always makes the ball out of bounds. That’s true on fumbles, kicks, pass attempts, punts, etc. why should it not be true here? Because it’s not to the kicker’s benefit?
Besides that, players *should* be able to gain an advantage for a superior understanding of the rules. Contrary to what some seem to think, football isn’t just gladiator combat, big men hit eachother hard. It’s a deeply strategic and cerebral game. Smarter players do, and should, have an advantage.

@@MegaBrokenstar I disagree. The ball is in the field of play. The kicker didn't cause the ball to go OB, the returner did. This is assessing a penalty not against the team that caused the infraction, but the team that didn't. I see that as a STUPID LOOPHOLE.

Everything that causes Bill Belicheck pain sooths my soul. And watching that SOB lose his mind as Tennessee eats clock on him, despite the fact that he did the same thing to the Jets prior to that, in the exact same way, lowers my blood pressure the same way relaxing in front of a fireplace with a good book and a dog in my lap would.

I feel like everyone is missing the obvious difference in the two Belichick double penalty situations. The Jets declined the Patriots' intentional delay of game, which is not what teams usually do in that situation. So Belichick was like okay if you want to be petty while we're already up 33-0, I'll do another intentional penalty and waste some time. That's why he's laughing, the Jets coach just looked like a dumbass for declining. In the Titans game, the Patriots ACCEPTED the intentional delay of game penalty, letting the Titans move back for their punter to have room to kick, which is the "sportsmanlike" thing to do. They could have been petty like the Jets and declined it. So for Vrabel to then do a second intentional penalty to purposefully run down the clock is him abusing the loophole far more than Belichick did against the Jets, in my opinion.

Field position was involved in the first case, which is why the penalty was declined.
Does anyone believe for a second that Belichick would be above using the rule to run out the clock with the game on the line? Tantrums always make the HC look bad.
