@@rishu0532 The song is a mess. All but Arif Mardin's BRASS section (album version). They were out of ideas and Took this one from LED ZEPPELIN "out on the tiles"... and like that...It's a-rhythmic as well. Only it wasn't pretending to be a dance song. This was their worst opener. @@googoogjoob5174 what have you achieved in order to judge them, or perhaps anyone, it can be your opinion, but do not state facts, it's not your job. Focus on your job.
I like how Freddie starts it off kind of insecurely defending their new record not rocking, and then they immediately jump into an amazingly heavy take on the song.
It's funny that Hot Space was regarded as Queen's worst album, but when you sit down and take a listen...you'll hear firsthand what the band was TRYING to do. They were adapting to the 1980s, going for a sound that--quite frankly--inspired Michael Jackson (of ALL people) to create his Thriller album. Aside from "Body Language"--which is, to put it bluntly, a godawful track--the tracks on HS were quite unique at the time. Definitely an underrated, underappreciated album that any Queen fan should have.
It's a great album, personally, I think it's one of the biggest influences in the 80s pop era, I mean, Madonna's like a virgin, you could tell it came from that album, just like thriller and bad like you mentioned.
3:49 i'm surprised that nobody notices this in the video in the comment sections, John Deacon is actually playing a Fender Telecaster for Staying Power.
This song really benefited from the live setting. The studio version, while decent, was cold, lifeless and sterile. This version is pulsating with energy and really gets the blood pumping. It seethes with a throbbing sexuality and an intense rhythm that makes you want to get up and dance across the friggin' room. THIS is the version that should have opened the "Hot Space" album.
Way better than the album version. If they had done the album with more wallop in the drums like this, I think would have sounded much better. Also, John is a pretty good funk rhythm guitarist.
When this album came out I was shocked and dismayed. Now I have to say it is one of my, if not my very favorite Queen album. I saw them on this tour (Billy Squire opened for them) and they were out of control. I've never seen a show that could equal it to this day. Freddie was the very soul of charisma. If you're a Queen fan I recommend you give this album a very close listen. There's a lot going on there. A lot. Las Palabras de Amour gives me chills to this day (yes, they did it live).
Las Palabras de Amor was NEVER played live (*aside from a few strummed chords from Brian that SOUNDED similar) until 1992 with ZUCCHERO for the FM TRIBUTE CONCERT. Brian has sung it since on the Q+PR Tours if I'm not mistaken. But unlike the rare stuff through the early years (FAIRY FELLER, SLEEPING ON SIDEWALK, which Queen pulled from their archives the 1 or 2 times they actually DID play it) most of QUEEN 'S 80's output had been documented at that point. It was never played live with Freddie
@@allthingskenteroo I’m not trying to hate or anything but no such show took place, the hot space tour ended on 3 November 1982. No shows took place in 1983
This is the way it should've been done on the album. This version is massive and still fresh. I'm an audio engineer/producer/musician and man I wish I could've been in a studio with them tracking this version. With some light editing, recording and mixing tricks this would be absolutely massive. I would've also loved to have played with tempo changes during certain parts. Man these guys were genius. the bar was so much higher back in the day. If people really got to see behind the curtain of most(not all) of today's "artists" they would be severely disappointed, the only thing more disappointing is having to spend hours/weeks/months at a time working with and or on their stuff. Luckily were starting to enter a time period where new things are going to break through over the next couple of years that kick the next decade into high gear. It's like a cycle that occurs every other decade.
I read an interview with their producer at the time, Mack, who said the band barely, if at all, played some of the A-side tracks together. He thinks that if the band actually played them a bunch, they'd have sounded much closer to the live versions. Production also killed some of the tracks, I'm throwing Mack under the bus for that shit as I have no clue how anyone involved thought these mixes were acceptable.
Was listening to a live album when I first heard "Staying Power" and "Back Chat" -- had to come to RUclips to find live videos because I knew Freddie was working the stage and needed the visuals! 😂
Interesting. I'm the opposite. Wierdly, cause I prefer live versions of songs like Dragon Attack and Now I'm Here cause they're faster. But I don't like this one faster, haha
Brilliant live rendition. Freddie was in his comfort zone here using his natural singing voice. Effortless. Love the Hot Space album ; Body Language , Back Chat etc ... classics!
First of all... WOW. Such an incredible performance! Freddie at 3:24 is just powerful. Second of all... John playing guitar is brilliant!!! He’s my favourite! And the way he and Brian move in sync at 0:56!!! ❤️
Freddie's extraordinay performance !!! This version is much more faster than the Hot Space LP. Freddie's voice is remarcable !!! He's got the ATTITUDE has pretty well ! His the fucking best signer ever !
How about Freddie's voice matching Brian's lead? This is awesome Live- Freddie couldn't be better- He just had to trust his fans..it was a new sound for Queen, something he picked up from the clubs he was going to at the time. The band was pretty skeptical about it...Work it baby...They did this song excellent!
Hot Space is a great album, especially to me, being a keyboard player and loving synthesizers, I can totally relate to it. Personally, I think it's one of the biggest influences in the 80s pop era, I mean, Madonna's like a virgin, you could tell it came from that album, just like MJ's thriller and bad. Also, a lot of rock ballads, you can tell they took ideas from Las Palabras de Amor and Cool Cat.
I have been listening to this album lately as a life long queen fan but new owner of all of their studio albums and I had been thinking how it "kind" of reminded me of a little James Brown type vibe... and, now in this video I see he says that they are trying to do the black/funk thing! Awesome!
Queen really shows off their chops here! Pretty hard to stay in time with a tempo like that. The album version should have been like this, but Freddie was too into the Oberheim OB-X and doubling down on a new synth-centric sound. It was the 80's damnt!
The album version is a light pseudo R&B record but the live version is a funky rock track. The live versiongoes for more power than the album version which is smooth
By any chance, does anyone know who was playing synthesizers during this Queen era? I know in the studio it was pretty much all of them, but I'm referring to live, for example the synth bass on this song.
In a way, its a shame that Hot Space was made in such a way that was trendy for the time. Songs like Staying Power obviously have some balls but just don't come through in the album like they did live.
I think this is either the pre overdubbed version or the over dubbed version because it sounds very different from the version posted in the official queen channel. You can go and compare it yourself. In here the guitar sounds more distinctive, especially Deacon’s telecaster and May’s red special has a much different tone. And then the opening drumming sounds something like an actual live drum set.I may be wrong but I’m 100% sure this is a different version.
This is from a radio brodcast. The vocals are the exact same but the mix is different becuase the Synths are not turned down and the drums are not compressed.
Not to take anything away from the album, but the hot space songs definitely work better in their live arrangements, obviously the band thought so too as all but “Cool Cat” and “Dancer” were played live
I don't understand why people hate this song. Personally, I love it.
Smith Henry-Fisher Because people don't like change.
The studio version of this song is decent, but this live version is 1000 times better.
I used to hate this a decade ago I was more of the early albums guy. Not Anymore 😂😂😂
Love it
Comrade Smith I like this live version more than the studio version. Freddie live is the best! 😍
Wish the camera got on John more often. He's just crushing that rhythm guitar part. Sounds like Nile Rodgers himself.

Exactly! 💕
I agree. But Freddies rapid amount of movements is just to immaculate to miss

I love Roger Taylor drumming and singing.
Pity the there's no drum cam. I would like to see Roger Taylor drum this song.

Agreed, although I actually like Body Language
Jose Ramon Martinez you could say the album was „ahead of its time“. Maybe, if it was released after the thriller album, it would be probably a hit
