Based on this, I'd say introverts are good leaders for introverts, and extroverts are good leaders for extroverts. But it also means that extrovert leaders are good at keeping everything as it is and have an easy time doing that, while introverts are trying to improve things for everybody and have a difficult time. Basically the same dynamic that you get in all affairs of 'mediocre mainstream'. This I-E distinction is becoming quite the explosive matter, because it implies that introversion is the smarter way which yields new insights and understanding necessary for envisioning and then shaping a better world. Because of that: I realize the distinction is useful for illustration and clarification, but I prefer to see it not as an either-or, but as a scale. You're not so much looking at two different things as looking at the same concept from two sides. Still, it seems I'm quite introverted, and that, combined with experience, also makes me see how extroverts tick. Apparently people often *allow* themselves to be easily distracted because they are afraid of looking inside, of listening to the inner voice/silence, because it is too painful for them. Not sure whether it's defining for the whole extreme of the scale, but extroverted behavior can be a desire for external distraction from internal issues. Related to that, I also don't believe that saying about acoustically isolated chambers driving people crazy. I think this only happens to people who can't stand to be alone with themselves. Bottom line: Yeah, I got awesome qualities, but in a very extroverted social environment it's usually not received well.
Yup.... there are times wherein they are planning for something in my class then the extroverts just talk about it without thinking at all then suddenly me and my other introvert friend just came up with an idea because we think deeply then everyone just followed us... it's like Extroverts are the sheeps while Introverts are the sheperds...
It's not that you're too weak to assert yourself, you're weak because you don't assert yourself. To find strength you must actually search for it, which requires effort. In time, given the opportunity, you'll find your bravery to assert your voice and lead based on the building blocks of reason as opposed to the flames of passion.
As an introvert, I spend half of the school period shushing my friends and telling them to stay on task. I love anticipating the future, and I am not so well at group tasks. I always like to go solo, and I share my ideas with those who can understand the ideas (I am 5 grades above my grade level), because most people think I'm boring. I also enforce diplomacy, and I have sent letters to the President about ideas to solve issues in the American society. I accept and recognize my "introvertiness"!
Thank you for making this video!! I think sometimes our society has a view that extrovert= "life of the party" and introvert= "quiet stick in the mud" and puts an emphasis on making introverts more extroverted because it is better. Really good summary on how introverts are often misunderstood and have far more positive qualities than their given credit for! (ISFJ)
The short answer to that is yes because it describes me very well. :) Sometimes I'm very loud and I seem like an extrovert because I'll talk to everyone in the room and be a big part of the party. But after a day or 2 of going places with friends or being social I NEED some alone time with myself. (Like I even shut my family out of my brain.) That's when I'm reminded how much of an introvert I truly am because of how re-energized and focused I feel after being alone. Hope that helped. :)
I’m an introvert and I’ve owned my own business for 13-or more years. For me it’s like if I wanna get something done right , I gotta do it myself . And if something goes wrong the only person I can blame is myself. I take care of getting the whole product, bringing it back to the store , weighting/ bagging it everything up ,I’m the salesman, I’m the security guard, I’m the look out, etc. etc. I also have a little part time job at a pizza place, it’s easy anyone can do it, but my full time job, the 1st one .!its not a job for everyone one.scared money don’t make no money :) Beezy
Thank you wellcast, I'm an introvert and going to summer camp with my youth group with all the activities can seem daunting from time to time. Theres allot of charismatic extroverts there so often the first to speak is the one to be listened to. So I've always thought "maybe I'm better suited being a follower than a leader if nobody with listen.". Maybe I can be a leader after all :)
It's interesting that being quiet is thought of as incompatible with leadership, when actually people in positions of power are often quiet because they don't need to justify themselves to anyone.
[2/2] My advice: take care of yourself at camp. Extroverted activity can be really draining for someone who's more introverted. Don't necessarily avoid the group activities, but get some serious alone time each day - maybe to start and end each day - to recharge, so to speak. Read, journal, pray, nap, whatever you need to do. Know yourself and take care of yourself. That's my advice. From one introvert to another. :)
I never knew my whole life that I was an Introvert until recently, I changed myself in any possible way just to act normal and be like everyone else... Now I regret that a lot because I pretty much 'forgot' how great it was just to be the thinking wise and silent person I was... I really hope I can 'learn' to be like that again :)
Being an introvert really does makes me feel to strive on focusing one thing at a time, but also it makes me feel distracted. That's why I usually get away from being into social groups and start living in my solitude. And motivations are essential too like hearing music and other things.
The secret answer is that it doesn't matter. It's a spectrum and you don't have to worry about which one you are most. People just like to lump people into categories for convenience but if you want to really understand yourself or others, lumping yourself and/or others into rigid groups is not the way to go. I speak from experience.
Hmm, this is really interesting. I'm very much an introvert and hate being the center of attention, but at every job I've worked at, I've been always been promoted to various other positions quickly, and I've always wondered "Why?" Now it's starting to make sense! Thanks Wellcast! Keep up the great work!
I like it this way. It makes it more interesting to watch, especially for young viewers. Instead of this being just some talk about some facts, like a teacher would do, they make it fun to listen, and I have to say that they got my full attention the whole time :) good job (you've got a new subscriber)!
It's been said that being "shy" isn't actually the same thing as been in introvert. An introvert isn't fearful of social situations, but they feel drained by them. An extrovert on the other hand feels energized by social interaction. A shy person feels anxiety about social interactions. It's actually possible to be an extrovert and shy (from what I've heard) which obviously causes significant problems.
Yup, I'm an introvert and most of the other introverts I know are equally distracted. When I was learning how to programme in languages such as Java and C+, I would learn the basics, and when I try to learn the advanced topics, I would get bored and read a book or ride a cycle with a friend or something, and get back to it about a month later or something.
Thank you! and on top of camp being camp it's a discipleship camp so they are trying to get people to take charge and work together as a team, which often turns into 5 people spouting at each other and the 15 other people just following.
Introverts think better in less stimulated environments. This is one of the things that define an introvert (i.e the ability to work in environments where there isnt much on going around). But once we are in these environments (quiet places), we are in distraction free zone. Distractions (such as facebook/ imgur/ texts from friends) are much easier to ignore. At least thats how it is for me :)
Ah, that might be a good way to look at it. I remember a time in my early youth when I would be known as a really lazy boy, but one of the smartest in my grade and I recall being a part of a group project where everyone was too busy with their own things and since I really wanted that grade (I was promised to do something with my dad if I could get first place) I did the project pretty much by myself. The group ended up getting an A+ for the project but I had forgotten to put my name on it :(
dont know why are people after the voice of the girl who speaks in these vids!! i absolutely love your voice caitlin... with the fluctuations.. its makes it kind of more funny... m an introvert so thanks for the tips and facts about 'myself'.. :) keep up with the great work..!! looking frwd to more vids!!
1:30 exactly what's happening in our classroom! "everyones talking and nobody's listening" and i end up with the other intoverts dogding all the bullet rainy around us! We also feel like we're the only one listening to them(extroverts) and we aren't even the ones they're talking to!
I'm sort of the same :( Usually, my mind's racing with things to say, but I never pluck up the courage to say them. I loved this video, because it gives us hope that we're not always gonna be downtrodden.
I don't know about that. When I get focused, you could call my name for a minute or two, but I won't notice you. However, it is simplistic to use this thinking paradigm of people as either introvert or extrovert. We all have some combination of the two "pure" personality types. You can be a strong introvert or a strong extrovert, but you can also be that happy medium of being only slight more introverted/extroverted than extroverted/introverted.
I'm confused, I like the crowds, I prefer being at a busy cafe rather than a solitary one, I prefer going to a busy club instead of a quiet one, I enjoy being around people, talking to people.... but when it comes to work, I don't like people, I hate interruptions, I much prefer emails rather than talking to people sitting very close to me, I prefer to work on my very own without interruptions, being extremely focused on my things to do.... I've always been a thinker, I love being with myself and when going out I often prefer to be on my own, even when I go out with a group of friends, I go my own directions.....when on the road I see someone I know and if I find it possible I avoid the greeting, is there a test to take?
+WCephei77HD Sounds like your a little like an ambivert, when i was watching this, some of what is said is like me while other things are not, you might be the same. I don't know if i'm correct but that would be my best guess.
When you are in the busy cafe or club, do you enjoy meeting and interacting with a lot of people or do you like stay off to the side people watching or do you like to interact with a small group within a busy atmosphere?
Amy Tat I'm guessing it's correct that I might be a bit of an ambivert, although I love the idea of being an introvert and I feel mostly identified as such. Yes, at the cafe or club... good question to serve as an example... I like meeting and interacting with a lot of people but at the same time I tend to keep it rather short and look around for ways of escape when I get stuck with people who are too good at talking, unless of course I feel interested in the topic... Yes I like watching around and thinking but I also love being funny when I'm comfortable and making people laugh, I'm sometimes good at that. Depending on the situation yes, I would stick to the small group in the busy atmosphere but I guess I prefer variety and being on my own wandering around is awesome.
They not only can, they all do! I would consider myself 90% introvert and 10% extrovert. One year ago I would have said 100% introvert. But everyone has personality traits of both sides. Somewhen, somewhere even the shyest person will mumble some words and try to build social connections. I mean, we all have to do that at some point. And I've come to the point where I can enjoy the moments where my extrovert side can release all the energy my introvert self has saved. I can be fun :-)
I know that feeling, extra-vert people are more likely to judge on the outside or judge too quickly. This causes bullying and not being accepted in the group. As an introvert I can tell that it's really hard to work with people who do not plan things, and I'm almost always ending up making a project my self. But yeah I know what you mean.
I assume you, the voice here, are an extrovert. You seem to be yelling a lot while you are talking about things that don't require yelling. You remind me of an eulogist at a funeral I attended some years ago. He yelled one sentence and whispered the next for the entire eulogy. I suppose someone told him that modulation of voice kept people interested and attentive. I would've left, but you can't walk out of a funeral.
You'd be surprised how varied introverts could be. I know of a few, myself included that act as typically described ah, introverts; shy, quiet, mostly polite, alone. Once you get past the stage of being strangers, you move on to half strangers, then potential friends, then maybe friendship. Through that time you can witness a dramatic change in that person, especially and even mostly if you're alone with them, they can becomes silly, crude, outstanding comedians, or just moderately different than they usually are, say, "more open with you" AND SO MY POINT BEING: Being an introvert, sometimes a lot of pent up tension makes you react ..differently than what would be usually accepted at certain things, example being if you witness and exceptionally idiotic debate and want to step in with logic but can't. She could be doing that here, being comfortable in her environment and finally expressing that emotion. We're not all necessarily soft spoken at these times. And to sum it up: She is a possible ambivert.
NamineAgel no.. Ambiverts. well that is a technicallity. If you mean close to 5% on the E I index yes. But being both qualities no. Its very rare for someone to be a perfect introvert or extrovert. That being said. It felt as if she was talking about a particular group of Intros. not to mention shouting out is a P J trait.... www.16personalities.com/personality-types
Finding things like this actually make me really sorry for trying to change who I am to gain more acceptance... Right now I feel like an in-between with no benefits whatsoever.
Anime Fangirl I just like it when Im NOT THE LEADER being a leader is hard for me, Im scared if people think Im really weird and doesnt even want me as a leader
+Snowman AJ when I DO get to be leader I'm in a group withe stupid teenage boys. All alone.. no girls whatsoever....., is exactly why I hate being the smart girl who as the 'responsible one' have to boss the other boys to do what I say. Which in most cases...theh don't.
I am very much introvert and easily distracted, unless I am genuinely interested in whatever I'm working on. The goal needs to be useful for me, inherently, or I won't care enough. But if I do, then certainly, I can work very hard, for hours on end. Of course, it does help if I am interested in something.
I think in most Western countries (including Latin America), extroversion is more valued. Especially, I'd say in Latin America, the Caribbean, Latin Europe and North America... And it permeates everything from social life to the workplace to politics, you're right. Not gonna lie though, where I am, and being somewhat extroverted myself, I like that having good social skills and feeding off people is a good thing to have haha
I agree. Thinking time especially is bad for me more often than not, because if I get too much time to think, I can't stop thinking, then I forget what I was trying to think about in the first place, but then I've drained myself mentally from so much thinking that I have to take a nap or something. xD At the same time, most of my best thoughts and ideas do surface when I think things through, so...double edged sword I suppose.
Being an Introvert doesn't necessarily mean you think before you speak, it just means your logical or analytical. Speaking before you think doesn't mean your an extrovert either. In the long run it comes down to, are you smart or are you not smart about your daily life. I personally believe I am an extrovert. I talk too much , very social, and share my opinion (When appropriate if appropriate) often. However, I think alot about things. I constantly seek to find holes in my arguments so I can fill them and if I can't then I conclude that it's simply not solid. I'm currently studying how to be better leader which as you can imagine is what lead me here. My mom says its useless knowledge since I'm only in middles school yet I find alot of what she says to be infactual and since decided she's most likely a very arrogant person. Back on topic, I believe introverts are great leaders but being outspoken or under spoken doesn't really matter when it comes to thinking logically. It just depends on experiences. Snobby people tend to think they are always right where as someone with knowledge understands they can be wrong and like to hear the argument on why. Not because your and extrovert or introvert. P.s. This video kinda makes extroverts sound unitelligent. . .
While some of us may see ourselves fitting in to the introvert category, I don't believe anyone is 100% introverted. Yep it's absolutely difficult for intros in an extro world and that's why it's important for us (introverts) to seek to achieve a balance where we can relate (as draining, uninteresting, or painful as it might be for us) to the extroverts Rensome of the posts below, guys, try to find something in the experience that you can learn from to improve yourselves. Think about it deeply, as we intros are brilliant at doing. And win because you became a better person from these unfair experiences
I have no idea if I'm an introvert or an extrovert because at school I talk to people and make conversation but I am VERY quiet and always thinking at home. It's like my life is a façade!!!!!!
Seriously this remind me to "Quiet by Susan Cain". Interesting book, very thorough experiments and discussion. I love the presentation as usual. I am INTJ or/and ISTJ. My education background is in both accounting and IT ( system analyst) ..it matched! :-D weee...
Introverts are good at intaking information. Extraverts are good at executing information. Introverts listen, while extraverts talk. According to Susan Cain, the best form of leadership is partnership between introverts and extraverts.
I don't think people think introverts can't be good leaders, it's more like introverts don't really want to be a leader. My intro buddies often joke that I should be president and I'd reply, "but you're smarter". They then say "but a key to leading is bringing people together, which extroverts naturally do, plus I wouldn't want to be in the spot light"
Continued, who normally judge them based on how well they can get the job done and accomplish whatever it is they're trying to do. Also, Introverts tend to think more about different ideas and possibilities etc. where-as an extrovert would be using that energy to make small talk with whomever they're with. Introverts would be imagining different situations and thinking about what they would do in those instances. They are more able to do different things and cope with them unlike -Cont.
yea one semester of uni and when the few weeks holiday comes, i shut myself in my room, which feel like heaven. and yea i am dreading working in groups and teamworks...blah
Talking about how introvert has its own strength for leadership is alright, but how are introverts supposed to get elected by democracy in extroverted world? People do like to vote for like-minded people after all.
Just make a list of ideas and policies and how they will change your country. Make sure you get plenty of media attention so it reaches the eyes and ears of everyone... was it that hard to think of it yourself? If people are in agreement with your ideas, they will vote for you. Sure, being charismatic also helps.
Yeah, likewise. There are quite a few extroverts who are very smart. Infact, one of my childhood friends is an extrovert but he's an Ace student.. But, the problem was that all he did was memorize everything and 'Mug' up everything from whatever source we studied from. In that manner, due to the terrible school system, he would get the top grades while the others who actually analyzed the question scrambled for the 2nd or 3rd place. THing is, Introverts think far more often.
I am an introvert, but my extroverted friends always talk during class, keep us from moving to other topics, and constantly locking my brain up when I try to focus. Can you make a video about dealing with these kinds of people?
I can't believe that people don't think before they speak.. That explains a whole lot.
Lovasz thank you, now o worship you.

I like you. By what you said at the top it sounds like extroverts are small children and the loudest one is the leader. HAHAHA!
hainley simpson LOL!
I have ADHD and an introvert, so when she said introverts tend to be able to focus more (or something like that) I was all like, yeah okay.
We have the ability to really focus though. Hyper focus
Yup.... there are times wherein they are planning for something in my class then the extroverts just talk about it without thinking at all then suddenly me and my other introvert friend just came up with an idea because we think deeply then everyone just followed us... it's like Extroverts are the sheeps while Introverts are the sheperds...
imho The sheep bleat too much.
I'm an introvert, often targeted by bullies (extroverts), and easily distracted.
i'm an introvert with the OOOH WHAT'S THIS? syndrome.
i am personally in despair
The style of the animators is so cute and simple, but has such nice little details on the celebrities. It's awesome!
This video is pretty much describing me , I was president of the class but I left because being around people was too tiring
Certain introverted personality types can keep calm under pressure making them great leaders as well
[2/2] My advice: take care of yourself at camp.
I'm an introvert but I get easily distracted
That's because of some meds I take but y'know
I love watching these videos. Ever since I discovered wellcast I've never been happier
Now i'm proud of myself for being an introvert. Thanks wellcast. I love you guys.
Too bad this channel doesn't make videos anymore; very good advice!
my personality type is ISTJ!
Introverted (I) 89% Extraverted (E) 11%
Sensing (S) 59% Intuitive (N) 41%
Thinking (T) 60% Feeling (F) 40%

Aw, that's really great to hear. Thanks for writing such a nice message. :)
today at school, they said a good leader must be sociable , outgoing,
i completely beat down my counselour with good psychology
I'm in love with that voice......... Wow.... Just wow....
Abe Lincoln had aspergers, so they say. People with aspergers need a lot of alone time.
Check out our For Our Introvert Friends playlist, especially Intro to the Myers-Briggs Personality Test!
Another helpful Wellcast video. Thank you. I really appreciate it.
The group ended up getting an A+ for the project but I had forgotten to put my name on it :(
I thoroughly enjoyed that & found it rather informative; thanks for posting this vid wellcast. :-)
dont know why are people after the voice of the girl who speaks in these vids!! i absolutely love your voice caitlin... with the fluctuations.. its makes it kind of more funny...
m an introvert so thanks for the tips and facts about 'myself'.. :)
keep up with the great work..!!
looking frwd to more vids!!
Me too I get easily distracted too lol. Because I'm constantly thinking of new thoughts and ideas that fascinate me. I can get carried away.
Don't care about what other people think or say about you and keep doing what you like.
People can display different traits of both introvert and extrovert-it IS possible! Have you checked out our playlist For Our Introvert Friends?
+WCephei77HD then you're an ambivert. just google it
+WCephei77HD Sounds like your a little like an ambivert, when i was watching this, some of what is said is like me while other things are not, you might be the same.
WCephei77HD You are extrovert no doubt.
True, sometimes i have too many thoughts and i dont know which 1 to focus on. I write my essays out of order because of this.
Thanks Well Cast for all this awesome advice and info. :)
Its easier to be a leader if you have good listeners.
Agree
I know that feeling, extra-vert people are more likely to judge on the outside or judge too quickly. This causes bullying and not being accepted in the group. As an introvert I can tell that it's really hard to work with people who do not plan things, and I'm almost always ending up making a project my self. But yeah I know what you mean.
I always think about random things and make up stories in my head and just think of things that would happen in different circumstances.
Strange, I've been recently researching about this....
But, thank you Wellcast!
I can focus very well, but only if I do not have distractions around me and I am a huge introvert.
Actually, that has nothing to do with introversion. She's by herself here, so if she is an introvert, she wouldn't necessarily feel bad yelling.
Unfortunately, i also don't think you can laugh at a funeral
You'd be surprised how varied introverts could be. I know of a few, myself included that act as typically described ah, introverts; shy, quiet, mostly polite, alone. Once you get past the stage of being strangers, you move on to half strangers, then potential friends, then maybe friendship. Through that time you can witness a dramatic change in that person, especially and even mostly if you're alone with them, they can becomes silly, crude, outstanding comedians, or just moderately different than they usually are, say, "more open with you"
AND SO MY POINT BEING: Being an introvert, sometimes a lot of pent up tension makes you react ..differently than what would be usually accepted at certain things, example being if you witness and exceptionally idiotic debate and want to step in with logic but can't.
As an introvert, this makes me feel good :)
Finding things like this actually make me really sorry for trying to change who I am to gain more acceptance... Right now I feel like an in-between with no benefits whatsoever.
more introvert videos please!! these videos really help me, more than anything!!!
whaaat?? Im a introvert and whenever my teacher made me a leader, I would be like "oh heeelll nooooo"
I just hate group projects in general.
Anime Fangirl
I just like it when Im NOT THE LEADER
being a leader is hard for me, Im scared if people think Im really weird and doesnt even want me as a leader
+Snowman AJ when I DO get to be leader I'm in a group withe stupid teenage boys. All alone.. no girls whatsoever....., is exactly why I hate being the smart girl who as the 'responsible one' have to boss the other boys to do what I say. Which in most cases...theh don't.
*they
Anime Fangirl
Heh Im not THAT smart :T
Im like a Average
Thank you, this video helped me so much! My high school's main foucus is leader ship. It can be rather exhausting
I am very much introvert and easily distracted, unless I am genuinely interested in whatever I'm working on. The goal needs to be useful for me, inherently, or I won't care enough. But if I do, then certainly, I can work very hard, for hours on end. Of course, it does help if I am interested in something.
I think I am a weird mixture of both. I get distracted easily but when its something I love to do no one can distract me, even a good friend.
I really love your videos! Thank you for putting them up!
I realized that I've always gone with the extroverts and I need to get back to my introvert roots. this is probably why my life is not working out.
I agree. Thinking time especially is bad for me more often than not, because if I get too much time to think, I can't stop thinking, then I forget what I was trying to think about in the first place, but then I've drained myself mentally from so much thinking that I have to take a nap or something. xD
At the same time, most of my best thoughts and ideas do surface when I think things through, so...double edged sword I suppose.
Great! Now I know that I don't only have the weaknesses of an introvert, I also have those of an extrovert!
Proud to be an introvert!
Yep it's absolutely difficult for intros in an extro world and that's why it's important for us (introverts) to seek to achieve a balance where we can relate (as draining, uninteresting, or painful as it might be for us) to the extroverts
Rensome of the posts below, guys, try to find something in the experience that you can learn from to improve yourselves. Think about it deeply, as we intros are brilliant at doing. And win because you became a better person from these unfair experiences
I like your videos. They are easy to listening and well drawn.
I am like a mouse in school. People want to yell or get me to talk, but no one can hear me.
I'm an introvert, but I am comfortable with public speaking. But my mum says this makes me not an introvert.
:-D weee...
Heehee, the stick figures are moving- Oh, there is a serious topic-
Oooooo, SHINY!
I am an Introvert proud and true! :)
I'm an INTJ I'll lead but only if I think I can do better and no one else can.
THing is, Introverts think far more often.
great channel, great videos, thx and keep up the good work!
Why would anyone NOT like this video?
I am an introvert, but my extroverted friends always talk during class, keep us from moving to other topics, and constantly locking my brain up when I try to focus. Can you make a video about dealing with these kinds of people?
