youtube has all the tools/resources and clout and all that to be easily and fairly swiftly the biggest platform on earth IMO. Just a tiny bit of effort is all it would take. People vastly overestimate twitches actual reach. Just like the recent dmca scares on twitch, you had dozens of ceos saying they never pursued it because twitch simply wasn't big enough in their opinions to matter.
kyle allen twitch blows RUclips out of the water in features though. Like it’s not even close and youtube would have to suck it up and induce a lot of changes to beat that. With how uncaring youtube usually is with it’s community, I see little chance they’ll ever allow the type of freedom that twitch does. That’s really the reason they won’t become a twitch
RUclips definitely sleeping. With promoting scams and flat out porn against their own TOS but can't report. Real creators getting shadowbanned, subs randomly being unsubbed. Yeah they ain't going to the top no time soon except maybe the scam centers
kyle allen People don’t watch RUclips for live-streams (at least the majority) they watch YT for short 10-20 minute videos. I don’t think YT streaming will be as big as you claim.
Hello, advice from fellow streamer. YT is the best option. Facebook has branding not suitable for gamers and may eventually be a good place for gaming livestreams, but it's not there yet (I used to be FB partner). Twitch is cool and all, but they constantly fuck up with dramas around dmca's, dumb bans or other stuff (deer girl). It's great platform, but it seems to be at ath regarding viewership and doesn't have much potential for future growth. Moreover every single streamer-wannabe is on twitch, cause they try to copy others. YT already has audience even if it has bad platform. It's crazy that you can get the same results (viewer count) on YT right now, when YT Livestreams still lack features. GL Boiz
Yeah if RUclips pushed there Livestream stuff even just a "Live" button on the top bar and add categories then I would be on it almost exclusively but I don't use Twitch as everything gets uploaded to YT anyway.
"YT recommends videos i myself didnt know i wanted too watch" you are right. that's how i found out about this video. i am actually impressed but also slightly scared on how good the algorithm is
Everybody is sleeping on RUclips is so true.. I mean I'm watching this from RUclips and not in your Stream cause here is all the like 'best of' stuff and why should I watch 8 hours of content from a single person when I can watch the best moments of 20 people in half of that time? It's for me just better invested time (and it's more fun to watch).. Okay it's no live interaction and there is a single Twitch streamer I watch twice a week but where did I discover him? Right! From RUclips videos of another group of creators where he was inside and know I'm watching him and his old videos and stuff (german guy like rank 150 by subscriber count two months ago) Very nicely put together video again, enjoy watching it and I can see so many things you say myself, there's never been something I was like "nah I don't trust you with that" //edit: What I wanted to add is the interaction each streamer has with their chat. While streamers up to 1000-2000 viewers can interact pretty easily with most of the people in their chat, bigger streamers can't cause of the emote spam that is happening even in slow mode. What I found really interesting was the way "3blue1brown" managed to start livestreams from his youtube community from the start on with a website to the stream that allowed viewers to interact with the questions he asked (was a maths lecture but it's a nice way tho) and it was such a different experience.. I know that people who can have an interesting show for 10 hours straight don't really need that but watching others videos for content as reactions? I'd rather see other people implement sth similar in their stream and see how they end up and maybe improve their viewercount and other stats (twitch themselves could implement more lol) thanks for reading my ted talk haha
That's why I'm grinding on both Twitch, and RUclips. Seems smart. I like both mediums for different reasons. They have functional similarities, but different atmospheres, you know?
I used to watch tons of twich live streams. But like you said, i just struggle to watch it, knowing i can see a well edited version of the highlights on YT in a small fraction of the time.
For smaller twitch streamers small clips are good but for high-end huge streamers the likes of xqc, doc, sodapoppin, asmongold, trainwrecks, and many others, most people with over 2000 concurrent viewers a stream are funny constantly. You’re simply missing out by watching a small video. I watch both RUclips and twitch but if you really want to see a lot of someone twitch has no replacement. Why would I watch a 30 minute funny Mario maker highlight vid when I could watch the whole 8 hour stream which is just as funny.
@@imaforceanature7297 That's also true, I'm just not really into Twitch for very long and still the arguments I brought hold.. It was not about the "I can watch 8 hours concentrated on 10minutes so I have less time spent" but the time I have available on a day and the amount of people I enjoy to watch.. There are like 6 people that upload daily or a few times a day I watch on RUclips, then recommended stuff and a the weekly and monthly stuff or just rewatching old videos cause they're good (michael reeves lol).. With me already being a user of RUclips for 5 years and having about 30 to 50 hours of watchtime weekly there's simply no time to watch just one person of those for their whole stream and then have time for all the other great content creators..
same, either highlight channels being recommended to me by the algorithm or youtubers that i watch encouraging viewers to watch them on twitch are pretty much the only ways i find out about new streamers. (i'll sometimes check out a certain niche game category if there are any high ranking (game has competitive rank system) streamers, but thats it for on site discovery.)
Haha exactly my thoughts I was just waiting for Devin to break it down. When it popped up on my home screen I literally went “ah yissss” EDIT: ah shit he broke out the notepad
I've sometimes found the experience of someone streaming on multiple platforms simultaneously rather weird for the audience, because you will see the streamer react to something happening on one platform (donation, chat, etc.), while leaving the viewers on the other platform clueless as to what happened. So I am not sure if I would actually recommend streaming on multiple platforms at once. Some viewers may even take issue with this simply due to brand loyalty or a sense of community on one of the platforms.
Speaking of the RUclips algorithm vs twitch, I would say that youtube is the biggest discovery platform for twitch. I doubt streamers like ludwig would be as big as they are without their insanely consistent RUclips content. Edit: also think critikal, Clint Stevens
100%. Ludwig is now one of my favourite RUclipsrs and streamers and there's no way I would've found out about his channel if he didn't have a RUclips channel since I don't really look at the category's that he mainly streams in
This is probably one of Devin’s best videos. Very powerful information in here, presented in a concise way. Very exciting things happening in live-streaming right now
16:11 - 18:40 was the most important part of the video for the future of streaming and it was over in 2 & 1/2 minutes. I do not believe Twitch will maintain over 50% of the market-share within the next 5 years.
The gradual introduction of a new platform can be used for new games as well. Or new segments. The slow burn works! Also good luck to all the main Mixer peeps out there
I watched a gaming video on Facebook, they immediately moved me to a live stream after that video finished. FB has the user base it can manipulate and place in these live streams.
Has YT made changed to their live notifications? I've seen multiple things about how no one knows when people they follow go live because that section is so small on the home page. I'm pretty small on twitch so I'm considering trying out YT if he really believes it's the sleeper pick
Everything you said is true. I don't know why you only got 100k views on this video. More people need to see this. This video should have more than 1m views. Mixer partners need to see this. One day I think RUclips will take over Twitch.tv. It is not far away.
Great video. I enjoy seeing news from your point of view as things get told from a better point than someone saying it and that goes without any understand why.
RUclips needs better dedicated sections for streaming vs videos to make it easier to find streams when you’re looking for them. Too hard to find new streams currently.
You said that RUclips recommended videos that people actually want to watch and I'm sitting here listening to all 40 minutes of this after being recommended it from RUclips.
i just relized how right you are about diversifying, i started watching dnd campaigns on yt ended up watching destiny and now im here. really enjoy the content you're putting out, keep it up
Question, do you think as of this present moment, specific communities are more likely to donate on average, yielding higher profit margins for streamers realative to their followers/subs/viewers. I've noticed especially between FB, amd Twitch. You can have 10× more viewers, or followers, but not make more income. I know the monetary systems vary from company to company, but I wonder if there's a general atmosphere the encompasses these mediums.
Yeah diversification is best for pretty much anything. If I code a program, game, extension, whatever and it only works on ONE specific version of the game/api/language for something, if that underlying game/api/language dies my product is BONED. As a rule you should be designing your stuff so that if you need to you can hop to a different boat when then one your on is sinking. Not always the easiest thing but it helps.
Was looking forward to hearing your thoughts on this one, excellent as always! Of particular interest to me, as I’m in the process of setting up a new character based stream(after streaming for 4 years!). This past week I’ve been debating about going the restreaming route(and consequently swapping affiliate subs and what have you for patreon)
I streamed for 2 years on youtube and didn't get anything out of it....... i stream on with for a few weeks and im in the affiliate program and i didn't change anything on my streams
the only thing keeping me from streaming anywhere else other than twitch is just the lack of emotes for some reason ... or the lack of emote use within other communities. YT probably just uses plain text and emojis in the live chat. It would be nice to see FFZ do the same thing for YT that it's doing for Twitch.
My guess on the secrecy was in trying to coordinate well with Facebook. If the announcements weren't perfectly timed or only part of the announcement was leaked, it could've been a potential media shit storm for both Facebook and the Mixer streamers.
I loved the mixer community and the ease of it but the shutdown really hurt alot of us die hard fans and TBH most of us don't know where to go now half of friends going one way and the other the other it's painful to see..
Diversification is key to investing money. Makes sense that it is important for distributing content. I was loyal to twitch for a long time because I didn't like the other platforms. Now the game has changed !!! Keep this discussions coming man! Thanks
30:30 I used to be one of those people who thought why would anyone want to use their recommend to browse and only ever went through my subscriptions. Now I almost never touch my sub tab and if there isnt a video I am interested in on my two lines of recommend I switch to twitch.
What about a service that runs off of VMWare. I mean, if a individual or group of individuals would host a streaming site and pay for the traffic. In theory, with the right moves and careful planning, could it have growth?
Does either FB or RUclips have an advantage for non-gaming streamed content? For example, those who currently stream to Twitch’s Makers and Crafters channels?
@Devin Nash - Twitch is part of Amazon and Twitch does run ads. Amazon owns and operates Twitch, the biggest live video streaming service in the world.
Well a big issue with twitch losing market share is that twitch based analytic sites will become grossly inaccurate. They will need to somehow pull viewership data from both youtube and facebook in order to indicate trends in the gaming industry. This will be very expensive, if done at all.
Have you heard of trovo.live? tencent is making a streaming platform ...comes out of beta at the end of the month, do you think they will make it ? would love to see you talk about that in a video
Ahhregi & JaredFPS (the 2 biggest streamers on mixer before ninja took over) have both announced they are moving to twitch already & are both sharing their numbers on twitter, they managed to ride the wave and have already got over half their following to follow them on twitch in just 1 day.
What really sucks for me is that I'd like to switch to RUclips for streaming games but because my RUclips is only for the music I make I feel like that would hurt me. I suppose I could make a separate channel but that seems like a bit much.
I'm a facebook gaming streamer, growing in facebook gaming is fast, from 0 views to 200 views average in a month, I heard people get revenue 1000-5000 dollar per month just from ads only... not account from star and subcription...
idk what facebook plans on doing with this but all i see is that they bought a liability after their main stars are gone shroud and ninja straight up happy as hell rn with that slow growth on mixer finally off their backs
Does it make sense as a starting content creator to multi-stream to multiple platforms? Ive read that they can tell if your multi streaming and will give you shit discovery algorithm
So, I know this will probably garner some backlash, but here goes. This is not a self-plug or anything, just addressing Devin's points. I stream full time on FB.GG. I've been there a year, and I make my living there. I'm not a huge streamer by any stretch, but I do see viewer counts typically between 70 and 600. I'm not partnered yet, and am just about to get my sub button. Only recently have I really started to diversify my brand (really started actively pushing on Twitter, Insta, RUclips), and my FB.GG following is enabling me to slowly branch out. What that means is that until this point I've BUILT MY BRAND ENTIRELY ON FACEBOOK GAMING. The value of the endemic audience really can't be overstated. And I know; Facebook is a robot overlord, but I will say that Facebook Gaming is no more so than the other platforms, and it offers creators a LOT of tools to build themselves with. I do really feel for the Mixer crowd, for what it's worth. Also, Devin's right about RUclips.
Yeah like 50% of what I watch on RUclips is just on the landing page. When that dries out I check my subscriptions. Good thing is that I subscribe to new channels every day so I’m on here a whole lot.
Mixer should've mixed their platform with the win10 gaming feature, imagine people having a mixer account by default and after pressing win+alt+G they've just recorded and uploaded the tripplekill (or any other awesome moment) they've just made to mixer's cloud and now they can share it by a link to anyone. Something like this could've pulled users to mixer imo.
Is there a statistic on Users consuming RUclips Gaming Live streams? That tweet you had up said Gaming content and showed videos along with live stream... like I want to know how much of that we're LIVE???
Facebook got busted for reporting fake view numbers previously (outside gaming). I'm skeptical of their numbers in general- I think you need to cite them with that caveat
I watched a fair amount of ninja and shroud on Mixers mobile app. I never once saw an ad??? Not one, always wondered why no ads, how can they compete without that huge revenue stream that their competitors have.
the main problem was Mixer in general the streams would often buffer or lag or outright not work more often than not (in some fashion. i.e., no audio but had video, no video but had audio), even on good internet connections while the idea of making a new streaming platform was ok, as competition never really hurt...execution was lacking i'm not sure as to why Mixer had so many problems with their streaming and as far as I could tell neither did they, as it didn't ever look like it was fixed (or even attempted to be fixed)
I think most people now just use their RUclips recommendation page, I can't remember the last time when I went to my SUB page, Where as before I was on my Sub page everyday watching videos from that page. I think RUclips can make some simple changes to improve the platform as a whole though, For example, If someone I liked uploads a video I want a setting that puts it into a certain playlist automatically (Without having to click like a watch later button), I see why they don't have this though as people would actually spend less time on youtube long term.
Me? Sleeping on RUclips? Come now, I slept on Facebook and my gut feeling was right about it. Grew so much in that 1 year, just like you said. I had that gut feeling about RUclips recently, I'm not sleeping on RUclips anymore. They are about to make moves, that's for sure. Will it be a year or so to see it? Who knows, but it's going to happen. Just like your saying, it's only a matter of time.
So I've been watching a lot of your videos, on how to grow my channel and everything, but the more i watch them, pushes me to stream on youtube since it's a more reliable platform to grow as a streamer. I've always wanted to stream on twitch but growth seems almost imposible. Even more now since my laptop broke as i was going to start uploading clips to my main youtube channel, just like you mentioned (stream twitch, upload clips on youtube) and now i just feel like I'm stuck.
The moment i saw this channel and saw that it had this podcast vine to it, subscribed within seconds. All of this info is so important for growth, mental health and most importantly making wise business decisions. I thank you sir *tips hat* alsooooo CONGRATS ON GRTTING PARTNERED!!!!
Nobody might read this, but anyway: I'm an avid youtube watcher. Every single twitch stream I watched was because I liked their youtube content. And without that I don't believe I'd ever have found them or understood twitch culture. Now the only times I go on twitch is if a streamer I like pings everyone in their discord when they go live or there is a promotion (like free runescape membership) active, but I won't stick around to watch other streamers. In comparison, I wish youtube would recommend me MORE streamers. They're really picky what they serve in your recommendations and in the search tab. The only thing I like more about twitch atm. Is their chat interactivity and ease to develop stuff since twitch chat is just a glorified IRC Chat. I made a mod to add chat interactivity to one game, and helped with another one for another game and am now looking into adding those features for youtube (we had been working on mixer integration but yeah... ).
I was streaming on mixer because it was easy through my Xbox I wasn’t partnered or anything had around 170 followers on mixer which is good for myself who works full time I transferred over to twitch now was disappointed with mixer shutting down
lOl at all the big content creators who went in so hard to say Mixer was the future of streaming, be offered money to leave and damn their old platforms, only for it to shut down 2 years later. I'm not even an active streamer, and the writing on the wall was very clear that they weren't going to last. Nice video here explaining it deeper. My problem with FB gaming is it has no space for growth outside gaming. They don't have a platform for non-gamers and no reach for non-gamers either.
Praise be on the fifth day i looked up he was there on the hill. Devin was right again. He has been saying for ages dont put all your eggs in one basket. Make sure you are cross platform. You will never know when something will happen.
Hey Devin Nash production team. This video is much quieter than standard. Right click video stats for nerds its -19db usually Devin videos are -7 or so. -7 is nice. You should aim for 0 or + if you hit + youtube will automatically adjust your volumes however if you sit on -19 youtube cares 0 and its annoying. plz

It all depends on the content creator and their platform of choice.
Microsoft being able to keep this whole thing a secret (in this day and age) is actually quite an accomplishment.

the only thing keeping me from streaming anywhere else other than twitch is just the lack of emotes for some reason
... or the lack of emote use within other communities. YT probably just uses plain text and emojis in the live chat.
It would be nice to see FFZ do the same thing for YT that it's doing for Twitch.
20:18 I'm poly-platform 36:12 seriously lol so many crazy things going on. Have a good one Devin & fellow viewers :-)
Isn’t twitch Exclusivity Clause applied to AFFILIATES also 😳???
Diversification is key to investing money. Makes sense that it is important for distributing content. I was loyal to twitch for a long time because I didn't like the other platforms. Now the game has changed !!!
Keep this discussions coming man! Thanks

I used to be one of those people who thought why would anyone want to use their recommend to browse and only ever went through my subscriptions. Now I almost never touch my sub tab and if there isnt a video I am interested in on my two lines of recommend I switch to twitch.
THANK GOD FOR DEVIN NASH
Don’t let this video distract you from the fact that geico can save you 15% or more on car insurance
Wait fr
Thanks for the breakdown Devin!
Was waiting for this upload!
ive been waiting for this video to go up as soon as i heard the mixer news! Devin's the best place for info on this kind of stuff
I knew Mixer would move to Facebook, because both are blue.
Another great video. Love the content and your insight. (quick note, turn up the volume output on your vids a bit).
what happened to "mixer just started and they're playing the long game" ?
Sup Devon. Love the videos. Do you think thetatv can be a competitor in this space?
What really sucks for me is that I'd like to switch to RUclips for streaming games but because my RUclips is only for the music I make I feel like that would hurt me. I suppose I could make a separate channel but that seems like a bit much.
this is exactly what i said in my last video ! devin youre that guy! love your content!
Thanx Devin for ALL the advice you give us !!!
Been watching out for this video. Love these and your take on things.
Great talk Devin, thank you very much for taking the time off PoE to do this
He plays Path of Exile too? I always thought he was a just chatting streamer focused on business talk stuff
Jorem Bellen he goes away from the world for a week or so every time there’s a PoE update
The second I heard Mixed was shutting down. I wanted to get your thoughts! Lol
I would guess that the 90 days exclusivity is only if you take the $2500
Yeah like 50% of what I watch on RUclips is just on the landing page. When that dries out I check my subscriptions. Good thing is that I subscribe to new channels every day so I’m on here a whole lot.
There has been many Mixer Partners that have been given Twitch Partnership since last week.
Note to self: Don't apply for Twitch Affiliate when I meet the requirements in a few days, and start restreaming on RUclips to see which takes off.
You could try restream on all facebook, youtube and twitch at once to draw some comparison, i think its good experiment
Nikko Sisowath Restream doesn’t support Facebook gaming at the moment, only Facebook live.
@@Taiyri yes it does but this is where it isn’t free anymore. They charge for it.
Great video Devin! Thanks for sharing this analysis!
AMAZING VIDEO! Keep these coming!
Is there a statistic on Users consuming RUclips Gaming Live streams? That tweet you had up said Gaming content and showed videos along with live stream... like I want to know how much of that we're LIVE???
was hoping you'd clip this!
As a medium sized RUclips gaming streamer I am waiting for the day we get “gifted memberships” ,,, it would literally change my life
Thanks, Devin. You always have the on-point answers for the streaming industry and what-haps.
Been looking forward to this
Facebook got busted for reporting fake view numbers previously (outside gaming). I'm skeptical of their numbers in general- I think you need to cite them with that caveat
I watched a fair amount of ninja and shroud on Mixers mobile app. I never once saw an ad??? Not one, always wondered why no ads, how can they compete without that huge revenue stream that their competitors have.
What are your thoughts on multiple streming? Like streaming at RUclips and Twitch at the same time.
Love your content! Im watching this again lol. I saw this yesterday on your stream!
the main problem was Mixer in general
the streams would often buffer or lag or outright not work more often than not (in some fashion. i.e., no audio but had video, no video but had audio), even on good internet connections
while the idea of making a new streaming platform was ok, as competition never really hurt...execution was lacking
i'm not sure as to why Mixer had so many problems with their streaming and as far as I could tell neither did they, as it didn't ever look like it was fixed (or even attempted to be fixed)
Wait... you're saying Facebook gaming had a UI update? What did it look like before, excel spreadsheet? :S
I thank you sir *tips hat* alsooooo CONGRATS ON GRTTING PARTNERED!!!!
i dont why, but i watch every video
Don't normally comment but you are a smart man. Thanks for the breakdown
Nobody might read this, but anyway:
I'm an avid youtube watcher.
I made a mod to add chat interactivity to one game, and helped with another one for another game and am now looking into adding those features for youtube (we had been working on mixer integration but yeah... ).
thanks man, love your content. love how you go straight to the point.
Great analysis, thanks for sharing
Hey Devin Nash production team. This video is much quieter than standard. Right click video stats for nerds its -19db usually Devin videos are -7 or so. -7 is nice. You should aim for 0 or + if you hit + youtube will automatically adjust your volumes however if you sit on -19 youtube cares 0 and its annoying. plz
