  • On June 2, I flew on Delta's MD-80 retirement flight. It was the last passenger/revenue flight for their entire fleet. I was lucky enough to have purchased a ticket in arguably the best seat onboard the MD-80. They have been planning the retirement of their 22 remaining McDonnell Douglas MD-88s for years now, but due to the current pandemic, the retirement was accelerated a year early. Delta’s once 120+ strong “Mad Dog” fleet is now all but gone, marking the end of an era for air travel worldwide as airlines have sought after more efficient aircraft to replace it with.

2:22 Contrary to popular belief, the reason MD-80s are widely referred to as the "Mad Dog" is due to it being WFAN radio host Christopher "Mad Dog" Russo's favorite airplane. Russo (an avid flyer and plane enthusiast) along with Mike Francesa were part of the legendary sports radio talk show Mike and the Mad Dog which ran on WFAN from September 1989 to August 2008. Us in the sports talk radio community would prefer if you would edit your video to give credit for Russo for coining this nickname.

I'm glad we still have them for the time being, but their more modern high bypass engines just aren't the same. It's not the vibrating, shaking, and in your face ear ringing experience in the back of the MD88s. That long, stepped spoolup on takeoff was glorious.

This made me realize I was a true AVGeek. Didn't expect tears to flow when I saw the last window drawn in.
I also remember how quiet they were. Even seated in the last row. Now I remember it was a bit loud in the back looking into the engine, but they climbed up to cruising altitude so damn fast it never registered.
Once you were that high, the only noise came from the wind passing the aircraft so fast, yet the higher you were the less wind your heard rushing by the fuselage. from there, all you could hear was the soft quieter decent, occasionally hearing the slight engine power being fine tuned for the glide slope. Even touch down was quiet. Well built. I never heard anything rattle around buttering the runway. She was always tight. A true marvel.
The crew and pilots always respected her and she stood up in time showing that ubiquitous respect right up till this very flight. That was probably the most disrespect anyone has ever treated her with.
Hope you live forever Mad Dog.

Hey, thanks for this video! I always appreciate people who take the time to video stuff like this, because we can look back and remember how things used to be. As well as all of us, I will always miss the JT8D powered airliners, the DC-9's, MD-80's, 737-200's, and of course my all time favorite, the magnificent 727's. Modern commercial airliners will NEVER be the same, as they are quieter with newer turbofans, and wing mounted engines just aren't as fierce and majestic looking as tail mounted birds. The noise of these older turbojets has everything to do with what made these birds so great, and so missed.

  • @kieranrichmond5864

A magnificent and emotive tribute to a true thoroughbred, the line of which goes back to the DC3. I loved those steep climb-outs - in the back, you could be 10 or 15 feet below the wing whilst in the front the near silence was uncanny - you had to really crane your neck to see the wingtips! MD 80/90 planes have taken me as far south as Ushuaia (55 S) and as far north as Longyearbyen (78 N) - some of the most memorable flights I've ever made.

I got to fly on one of these in 2019. Although I hate flying, it was cool to fly on a plane before it was retired. Long live Mad Dog!

Great video, QFS Aviation! I flew on the MD-88 a continent away, in Finland, in 2003. I was on my honeymoon then and flew from Helsinki to Rovaniemi with Flying Finn, a budget airline. The aircraft was ex-Finnair. I can't recall the age of my plane then but it would've been more than 20 years too.

I got to fly an MD 88 for the first time from CLE-ATL in February 2020, to my surprise, I thought it was a great plane! Very comfortable seating, I thought it was more comfortable than the 737-800 I flew on my connection. I also did the MD 88 ATL-CLE a week later after my vacation was over. I'm glad I got to fly on it

I’m glad I’m not the only one who taps the plane right before getting in 😁

I’ve been in the jumpseat of that 88 before! Didn’t put it together until I saw the tail # at the end, ship 9000. I remember laughing because someone penciled in HAL- before the ship number on the instrument panel.

This whole journey isn't just your usual "going from place A to B", over half of the people here probably booked only for the sake of it's final flight and retirement day :P Pretty amazing

Funny, when the MD-80 came out in 1979, ad in Aviation Week touted how quiet it was (for back then) with the slogan "This new baby doesn't scream"

I like MD types aircraft so much, also have lot of memories with it. Watching this video make me feels little sentimentality, because in Taiwan, we already made the last MD82/83 to retire, there's no chance to heard the wonderful sound of the engine, watching wing and the sexy sausage body. BTW nice video.
