Airports compared

DC airports
Baltimore Airports
Thanks for watching! I just posted a new video comparing Miami's airports - check it out: ruclips.net/video/XDUvzyG4tCE/видео.html
DCA actually does not have US Customs facilities located at the airport, which is why it can't really accept international flights, in addition to the runways being shorter. The reason it can accept flights from Canada and Nassau is because these are "pre-cleared" locations where the passengers actually pass through US Customs at the origin and arrive into DCA at a regular domestic gate.
Dca has flights both Canada 🇨🇦 and Nassau Bahamas 🇧🇸
@@noonienoonie1996 Yes, as I said later in my comment.
Speaking of Canadian flights, Air Canada have routes to the DC Area from Toronto Pearson (YYZ), Montreal-Trudeau (YUL) and Ottawa Int'l (YOW).
There is more to it than that. DCA is in the epicenter of the miserable airspace known as the SFRA. thank you miserable bastards responsible for 9/11.
Oh wow thats actually makes a lot of sense! I never noticed that Reagan Airport is only a "NATIONAL" airport - not international - until like a year ago which is when I discovered it predominantly only has flights in the U.S. and some parts of Canada
To clarify the 267 Toll Road to Dulles does have a airport access road (hot lanes) that are free of charge and connect you directly to the airport with no exits. You are able to exit the airport to highways after your arrival
BWI also has passenger train access via Amtrak and MARC commuter rail
And I agree with the others, almost all locals I know call DCA, National.
For sure. This is an important point. BWI was the first airport in the US to have its own intercity rail station which opened in 1980. I have taken AMTRAK from there many times. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Baltimore/Washington_International_Airport
Most I know call it Reagan. Probably an age thing. Those that knew it as National still cal it that, and those that knew ot after the rename call it Reagan. Same with BWI. Nobody calls it Marshall at all, just BWI or Baltimore.
as a local who fly out mostly from DCA, this is news to me.
almost everyone call it DCA or Reagan.

Excellent comparison between the three! I live in the area so I've flown out of all three numerous times, and I will say there is something especially magical about flying into Reagan and seeing all of the DC landmarks outside your window as you're arriving. Dulles has a cool subway system though, so that's pretty neat. BWI, um...is also an airport in the area. :P
It’s called National Airport...we trying to get rid of Regan name.
@@stevenkelly2477 False. It's Reagan.
@@stevenp25100 if you call it Reagan you're a transplant. ppl native to the area call it National.
@@jenna637 Agreed. Even those of us from other parts of the country call it National.
They are all just ummm airports
Great video, one thing I will add is the mention of the toll road that goes to Dulles… although there is indeed a toll road to Dulles, there is an airport traffic-only lane separate from the rest of the toll road, and there is no toll required to take this lane. It’s incredibly convenient for people living east of the airport
In the early years of Dulles, up until the mid 1970s, the Dulles Toll road was great for speeding and drag racing.
Cool breakdown. I've always been a fan of Dulles airport because of their Mobile Lounges that literally drives across the tarmac between terminals! But I will say Reagan airport definitely has the coolest approach of the three, with it coming in over the Potomac River and passing major landmarks. Great video! I definitely learned a lot
BWI is definitely a hub for SW rather than a focus city, it’s one of their busiest airports. Great video
Focus city is one term used for Southwest's "hubs", as they don't use the traditional hub and spoke model
@@ChicagoGeographer It is *the* term used. You got it right.
I'd call it a "hub" for Spirit Airlines too lol.
@@ChicagoGeographer That's exactly right. You're video was spot on!
I used to fly to Dulles a lot when brother lived in Herndon. The Metro extension contributed to a major increase in his property value. United usually had cheap direct flights from O'Hare.
Its crazy when you look at how built up the area around Dulles is today, but back when it was built, it was really out in the sticks. The planes that landed there at the start were really out in the middle of nowhere.
Also, if you are driving to Dulles, you don't have to take the Dulles Toll Road coming from the East. There is a free highway from the Beltway in the middle of the road that lets commuters come all the way to Dulles without paying a toll (and leave the same way).
I’ve flown out of all three. Reagan is closest to downtown and is usually better for domestic flights. Dulles is good for international and connecting flights. BWI mainly services Baltimore, but is also a hub for Southwest, which makes it good for travel
Friendship Airport is mentioned in Goldfinger BTW. When Bond is flying back from Switzerland in Goldfinger's jet, its mentioned that Friendship Airport Baltimore is their gateway airport to the US.
Cool video! Being from the DC area in Virginia, I have flown through all three of those airports! Fun fact you forgot to mention, the Dulles Toll Road has four toll-free lanes for airport traffic only.
I don't think DCA is "arguably" the easiest to access by public transportation. It's an obvious matter of fact.

An excellent analysis -- many thanks!
I really love these mini documentaries!! I've watched several and they're so awesome and informative!!! Great job! I'm an aviation geek myself, so I love watching!
Thank you!

Glad to hear that thanks!
Love your content man! Keep it up! Any chance you could do a video on the surrounding cities of Chicago like Kenosha, Rockford, Milwaukee, Kankakee etc?
Could be interesting for sure!
I don't know why I watched this video, but I'm glad I did. Educational and intriguing! Great stuff, man! I give you kudos for the time you spent in researching, and making, this video. Very well crafted!
Much appreciated, thank you!!
Love the video. A Bay Area comparison would be great!
Just want to mention that BWI is planning on adding a 4th runway parallel to 28/10 and extending 33L/15R to handle heavier international flights, as well as renovating the International Terminal & Expanding it
Great video!! I live near BWI and my favorite airport is IAD since it has more destination.
Interesting videos - thanks. Do you have one for LA area airports?
Great video!
i've been to all 3 when since i live in the DMV but my favorite airport is bwi. dulles is really nice too!
I flew out of the new concourse out of National this past June. It’s so nice and airy. It also kept me from having to fly out of 35X. That really sucked when flying to SC in January
Nice video. I have been to all these three Airports through Rochester NY Connection
As someone who grew up in the DC suburbs but now lives in Baltimore, I can only fly international out of Dulles. BWI is technically an international airport but like DCA, I treat it as a domestic airport because the options are severely limited.
I'm from Houston and I've always flown Houston/Hobby (HOU) to BWI whenever I visit DC....then take the shuttle bus to the BWI train station and take the MARC or AmTrak train in to Union Station in downtown DC. It's really easy and the cheaper airfare is the big selling point for me....I do comparison shop but flying into National almost always costs more...but I may try it next time just for the experience and even easier connection to the DC metro, which I love.
Dulles now has subway service.
BWI has Amtrak and Maryland commuter trains via shuttle bus.
Very handy.
As a DMV Native this is how we look at them:
BWI: I'm going to LA/Phoenix/Jamaica/ etc...
Reagan: I'm going to Boston/Detroit/Chicago
Dulles: I'm to Paris/Tokyo/Lagos
As an aviation enthusiast, Boeing 777 planes were mostly my favorite beautiful airplanes to see flying. Lucky to see lots of big airplanes when I live a few miles away from Dulles International Airport. And the Airbus a320 planes are also the best planes I like.
I lost count of how many times I've gone through Dulles International on cross Atlantic flights. I remember the special shuttle vehicles we used to board, that rose up and down to board and deboard the planes. If you're just going strictly to the DC area, Reagan is the most.practical. The DC metro is right there and so easy to use.
Excellent content. I'm from the DMV, and my favorite is probably Reagan (not the president lol) although I also really like BWI. It's really amazing that you can get to Reagan so easily from the metro, and BWI's location is so convenient and it is accessible via MARCC and the light rail, so still easy to get to. Also, as a Marylander, I really appreciate all the Maryland related stuff within the airport. Both are really great airports, but Dulles sucks in almost every way--it's really a pain to get there since it's on the fringe of the metro area. I also think it's a really good strategy for the greater Baltimore-Washington area, as splitting the massive passenger capacity of the DMV between three airports really alleviates congestion, although Dulles is still a pain.
Dulles is much better than BWI if you're coming from DC though, I-66+Dulles Access Rd basically never has traffic anymore, since the put crazy expensive HOT tolling on I-66(which wouldn't apply to people on taxis or on the 5A bus) , and 267 has a dedicated road to the airport that also never gets congested. BWI on the other hand, 295, the beltway, and I-95 are pretty much always parking lots. Plus, when the Silver line extension opens to Dulles, it will be faster than the MARC+Shuttle bus route to BWI. I get why you would prefer BWI as a Marylander, but as someone from NoVA I just have to disagree.
BWI is far from convenient unless you’re either within easy access to union station or live in PG, Anne Arundel, or surrounding Baltimore. Anyone from NOVA or even Montgomery county is forced to go through the absolute hellhole that is 495 and 95, particularly in rush hour. While Dulles is no better for Marylanders, it’s significantly more convenient if you live in NOVA and the 267 dedicated lanes make you virtually immune to traffic on the largest stretch of the road. Not only that, it’s direct connection to 28 makes it easy accessible by people in the 28 and 66 corridors. Once the silver line is finished, dulles really will be just as accessible to people in the district making the two airports virtually identical in convenience.
@@insertchannelnamehere8685 BWI Marshall, had the MARC Train, but its like the old New York MTA "Train to the Plane" where you have take a shuttle bus to the terminal.
as someone from nova dulles far exceeds bwi, but of course living in maryland i can see for sure why bwi is a better option for you
Once the Dulles metro extension is completed people from the district will be about to get to Dulles in no time unless metro is experiencing delays or maintenance but that’s expected as any other public transportation service in the world. As someone who lives in Tysons, trying to get to Dulles is easy for me but when metro get there I won’t take Uber again for the extension part and it will really help business along the way. As the metro will go pass the airport and impact surrounding areas and all those international passengers can stop and explorer the area more.
Baltimore and Southwest covers a good amount of ground to New England and Caribbean but I have to go all there way there with heavy traffic on Beltway, 95 and the unpredictability of it makes me avoid it. I’ve missed flights out of BWI because of that. Ride share is expensive out of BWI at night and if you’re really unlucky you will be stuck on the highway at just about any time of the day. National at this very moment is the most convenient and it has metro options for serving most of the immediate area.
Lol that C/D Concourse project has been in the works for over 30 plus years
We live in Baltimore, but will drive to any of the three that makes sense. In fact, flew out of DCA this week. BWI parking is so much easier than the other two. WN hub at BWI is very convenient for domestic and Caribbean. We drive to IAD for other international locations. I am surprised at how difficult it is to get to JFK from any of these. Flights to JFK exist, but not as many as I would expect connecting to major world cities.
They are very close to each other, in some of the most crowded airspace on earth, and there is very viable competition with both buses and high-speed trains. The economics of DMV to NYC are not favorable to flights
YES! Finally! Also, locals call it just "National Airport" and its mailing address is in DC. EDIT: No one wanted it to be named after Reagan. And every airport has a top destination of Atlanta LOL.BWI has both a light rail station and an Amtrak/MARC station. Also, the toll road has separate toll-free lanes for Dulles. For National, Project Journey adds a new concourse as a replacement for 35x and two new security checkpoints which will put National Hall behind security.
DCA’s mailing address is not in DC.
@@planepirate it is: 1 Aviation Circle - Washington, D.C. 20001
@@azan-183 According to Google it’s Arlington, VA, not DC for the mailing address. The main terminal is at 2401 Smith Blvd Arlington, VA
@@JoshDoesTravel well Google is wrong LOL!
@@planepirate WRONG!! That part of land National Airport sits on across from mainland DC is considered District of Columbia. Look up the boundaries. It’s the same as Elis Island looks like it’s in New Jersey but it carries a NYC address.
Used to watch the planes when it was Friendship back in the 70s visiting relatives in Glen Burnie. Great memories.
San Jose, San Francisco, Oakland vid?
BWI was one of the filming locations for the tv show Airline on A&E
I am from Germany and I’ve flown out of and landed in Reagan and Dulles, they are both really cool. I loved the runway Busses that are high up and at Dulles and also the proximity of Reagan to the city.
The Dulles mobile lounges are famous!
@@azan-183 They are now retired and have been for quite awhile now
@@johniii8147 still are used for international arrivals and concourse D flights, but the Aérotrain replaced the other uses
I believe that Baltimore also used mobile lounges for awhile.
At least, I’ve seen pictures of them.
@@chrisnorman9980 Yes
I was working at IAD on 911 for UAL Express and worked 20 hours that day . I helped evaluate many messengers from the gate area's that day
Well that was fun! Does Dulles still have those dune buggies they run on the tarmac to transport passengers to different terminals? There may not be a train option to get passengers to Dulles airport, but Metro does have a nonstop bus that will take passengers to the terminal. Anyone can take the 5A Metro express bus to IAD. It costs $7.50 ow (2021).
The "Mobile Lounge" is still in operation but in limited capacity as the underground rail has replaced most of its people-moving function. They still use them to shuttle people from International arrivals to Customs and you see them moving baggage occasionally but far from their peak usage in decades past.
The new police training academy complex in Anne Arundel County (thank you for pronouncing it correctly) is named for the officer who wounded Samuel Byck during the hijacking attempt.
United’s Dulles hub is in need of a major rebuild. The metro I hope will open soon. I live on the west coast so DCA is not as accessible but I love the access to DC. Plus, landing there is a trip. BWI is ok but not the most convenient if you live in the beltway.
if you have to fly into BWI, look into taking Amtrak or MARC trains into DC, there is a free shuttle bus from the airport to the train station ... trip is about 25mins or less
It's been need of rebuild now for decades. Those were "temporary" concouses built that are now going on 30 years. It's a small hub for UA so they haven't been willing to support the build on badly needed new facilities. Most improvements have gone to DCA instead.
Love the map at 0:35! 👌
Great method!
I typically use BWI for domestic flights and IAD for international flights. Now with proposals for Dulles to have additional gates by the end of the 2020s/start of the 2030s. I hope to see direct flights between the Southeast Asian countries and Dulles. I don't know if Singapore Airlines will try to get a Dulles flight from Singapore, but I think it would also be the timeframe of the New Manila International Airport in Bulacan opening and expecting Dulles flights to land there non-stop.
Hey Chicago Geographer can u pls make a vid of Beijing Daxing airport vs Beijing capital airport pls
Forgot about the MARC and AMTRAK trains that stop by BWI as well. Dulles is the last one I've yet to fly out of, but hopefully that changes soon when the metro stop opens. I refuse to drive there.
The video neglected to mention Gravelly Point on the northern end of National's main runway as one of the best "plane-spotting" locations in the world -- and that's not an exaggeration. Planes swoop in low at what seems like tree-top level for landings when the wind patterns dictate.
DCA was created by soil being added to the Virginia shore line and actually sat in the geographical boundaries of the District of Columbia. DCA was having trouble operating smoothly and The Metropolitan Washington Airport Authority was created as a public private corporation to run DCA and IAD. This move extensively made DCA a Virginia property. Virginia does not have any ownership of the major waterways on the Potomac with Maryland and the District of Columbia. MWAA operates the airports under lease, they operate the toll road and access road leading to IAD which raises revenue for the roadway. They also funded in part the silver line extension and are in charge of construction for some of those stations.
Road access to Dulles Airport is by way of the exclusive use Dulles Access Road and is not tolled. Ii was built at the same time the airport was built and opened in 1958. its east end connects to VA I-495 and VA I-66. The Dulles Toll Road runs parallel to the Dulles Access Road in the same right of way and opened in 1984. It was built to connect the communities along the Dulles Corridor between Loudoun County and VA I-495 and VA I-66. The median of the Dulles Access Road was made wide enough to accommodate the Metrorail Silver line.
In 5th grade my class learned about Air Florida flight 90 and about the man in the water who rescued everyone except himself
recently i flew round trip between BDL and DCA.
I have flown into and connected through BWI a few times, last of these less than two months ago arriving from an intl flight late a night. Immigration/customs was a breeze but getting to my connecting flight, not so much. BWI's layout reminds me of a smaller version of MIA (Miami Intl), one single long semi eliptical building with attached concourses which do not neccessarily connect past security...so if your connecting flight leaves from the very other end of the terminal, it is nothing but a long, tiring walk.
They're actually in the process of building a direct connection between C pier and D pier post security, which will connect the entire airport together
I’ll have to pick Dulles as my airport. Been flying out of their since I was a kid I flew from all three but Dulles holds a special place in my heart as I took my first flight ever from there to Trinidad 🇹🇹 back in 2002 !!
Another great video! Thought about what I was going to say here but didn't come up with anything, so I guess I'll just type some brackets. {}
I usually go spotting at Dulles, Reagan, and BWI
I somehow found myself looking at this video today and the Metro FINALLY opened its Dulles station this week... personally, preferred DCA for domestic flights due to its accessibility more than anything, but Dulles having the new metro access is definitely a game changer.. only flown BWI once on a flight to South America, airport is fine, just too far from where I live. Having lived in the area for more than 6 years, I've only heard people calling DCA as that or Reagan and never National, so that's something new.
I am a native Washingtonian, and I never call DCA anything but National. It was National Airport LONG before Reagan even became famous, let alone President! Damn politicians!
Reagan National was surprisingly nice. I've heard many times that there's no direct flights from San Antonio to Reagan, but I could've sworn back when I was still flying with American and Southwest I took a direct flight to Reagan from SAT, but I'm likely misremembering and forgetting a connection at Houston Hobby or IAH idk. Maybe I just got used to going directly to Dulles when I started choosing United exclusively since San Antonio International is a "Hublet" for United which I learned is a thing and why Terminal B is mostly United. The more you know no matter how useless lol
Can you do a Bush vs Hobby video?
4:44 now the list has changed DCA is the busiest followed by BWI and then IAD but still most international operations happen from IAD
You can get to Dulles on metro by 5A To Dulles Airport (from SW DC)
Great job but what about taking the MARC train to BWI as a option?
And Amtrak which imo is much easier and barely more expensive (union or new Carrollton is usually no more than $15 and there’s no stops)
Toll Road is free going to Dulles….
And as a electrician working in the DMV the toll road is a speed hack for commuting in & out of DC even if your not going to the airport 🧐
I have worked at all three & Dulles is the nicest ( Pretty Blue Lights ) followed by National then BWI.
LA airports next? That said, which ones will you do? LAX obviously, and then probably Burbank, but then also Orange County and/or Long Beach AND/OR Ontario?
Definitely want to do LA airports at some point, I'd probably do LAX, Long Beach, and Burbank. A video for Bay Area airports is also on my to-do list!
Don't forget orange county and Ontario airports
Thanks
I’d add that BWI is also easily accessible by public transit from the DC area (especially suburban Maryland) because of the Metrobus express bus from Greenbelt Station. In addition, it’s a fairly quick drive via the B-W Parkway or I-95 (notwithstanding traffic delays).
They seriously cut back on that bus service 2 years ago, I still think an Amtrak ticket is the best bet ($12-15)
@@benfelps Good suggestion. Completely forgot about Amtrak as an option. MARC can work, too, depending on timing.

You can fly to London and Frankfurt from BWI. I think those are the only two European destinations though.
Yeah I think that's right
I think bwi is getting Iceland back as I believe Iceland air will return sometime in 2022
You can also fly to Reykjavik.
But BWI doesn’t carry Lufthansa, a German airline.
@@andrewsatya6966 Condor. And usually only operates in the summer
great vid, but no mention of the moon lander vehicles for transport back to the main terminal! those things are so soviet era
There were talks after 9/11 of permanently closing National Airport and shifting some of the operations to Andrews AFB (similar to Charleston AFB in SC in which Charleston Int'l Airport share runway and taxing facilities with the USAF), with BWI taking up the rest of the domestic activity, as well as serving as the backup domestic hub for the Andrews AFB replacement: all that due to the nature of Air Force One being at Andrews (POTUS being there requiring all flights to be grounded until Air Force One has departed). Thankfully the Virginia Congressional delegation persuaded FAA officials to keep National opened, as Andrews AFB has no direct connection with the Metro or Amtrak's Northeast Corridor, and would have required building new facilities from scratch, along with the necessary grade-separated highway connecting this proposed civilian airport with the Beltway, a highway notorious for its traffic despite infrastructure improvements since 9/11.
I love the pokemon music in the background
Interesting tidbit about Dulles Airport.
All airports in the US are identified by a 3 letter call sign, for example. JFK in New York, LAX in Los Angeles, DAL in Dallas, etc. To make them easier to remember, they try and use letters that echo the name of the airport.
When Dulles opened up, it's call sign was, predictably, DIA (Dulles International Airport). Nearby National Airport has long had the call sign DCA (DC Airport).
Since this was in the day of hand written baggage tags (no computer generated one then!), it was found that many bags destined for Dulles ended up at National, and vice versa. When scribbling quickly, DIA and DCA look a lot alike. And even if the correct tags were applied to the bag, the handlers could easily route them to the wrong airport.
After years of mass quantities of bags being shuffled from one airport to another, it was decided to change the callsign of Dulles. The industry does not do this lightly, because people memorize these call signs, and changing them can lead to confusion. But there was already plenty of confusion, so it was decided to change the callsign from DIA to IAD, which is based on the French spelling of Dulles International Airport (roughly International Airport Dulles).
I didn't know about the baggage confusion. Interesting anecdote. However, the correct french way of saying IAD would be AID (Aèoroport International de Dulles).
@@Francois176 No one today would even think of writing baggage tags by hand!
I have no knowledge of French, so I don't doubt you in the least, so my explanation for IAD is wrong. I will update my comment, if able.
However, as there is an AID airport in Anderson, Indiana (Anderson Municipal Airport), that code was unusable for Dulles. So using IAD at least kept the original letters!
The Dulles and Reagan Airports are 2 airports within the DC area. Baltimore actually have 2 airports in the metro area, not one. Other than BWI, there's also Martin State Airport, although it's mostly for military purposes only. Correct me if I'm wrong.
Yes but there's no major commercial flights operating out of Martin State. GA and military
I tend to use Reagan due to the ease of getting to the city via train.
You should do a FLL compared to MIA
Do Bay Area airports please
Left out a pretty key BWI travel point. It has direct transfers to Amtrak allowing connections up and down the east coast.
But you have to take a shuttle bus to the terminal. Years ago I rode Amtrak there, because there was no MARC weekend or Holiday service back then. It also has a Light Rail station from Baltimore to the International Terminal.
@@rockvilleraven If you really want to arrive via rail from DC, you can take Amtrak or MARC to Baltimore Penn Station, then transfer to the light rail and take that directly to the Airport. But also, no one would ever do that lol
Definitely just landed at Dulles like 2 hours ago..
DUDE, YOU HAVE POKEMON MUSIC IN THE BACKGROUND OMG! IT'S FROM DIAMOND AND PEARL!
We might be getting a 4th airport! (Manassas)
Heh I live near bwi and I had recently arrived from iad and kdca
One factor is the airline you are using. BWI is a regional hub for Southwest, so that's the go-to for many choices of destinations.
I always hate the fact that the ill fated air Florida flight started on my birthday to this day. I always remember living in Florida and my grandmother getting ready to fly back from Florida to Baltimore and stupidly asking jokingly in private, how much was the flight if they only went to the 14th st bridge was. Now, as an old man I realize how terrible that comment was.
I have been flying since I was 10 years old and now at 62 I still would rather fly, then any other way of getting from point a to point B. I hope one day to be able to fly somewhere really far maybe Australia on a really big plane or maybe if things progress quick enough on a supersonic rebirth. Here is to all the flying enthusiast around.❤
What? Dulles Vs National Vs BWI why didn’t you put reagan?
Dulles is the best airport…
YES YES
Eero Saarinen at 3:21!
One of the runways at DCA is never used.
DCA felt cramped, I visited In 2017 before hell broke loose.
Departed on Sas from Dulles when heading home.
and yes I did get to walk past the white house
i fly to dulles... fun fact, bob ross inc. is like across the street from dulles
You can also get to Dulles toll free from 28
I'm 15 minutes from Dulles so prefer flights out of there, but truthfully National is the better airport and do fly out of there if the flight times and/or connections or no connection work better but usually its Dulles. Rarely would I drive so far as BWI, not even a few hundred in ticket cost would have me do that.....but I'd do it for a long haul nonstop.
Actually, Reagan National is the only part of the District of Columbia that is on the Virginia side
Each of those airports should outright serve a different purpose: Reagan should only be an express airport to/from hubs around the country; BWI should only be the low-cost carrier option; and Dulles should be the primary (American should move its hub there--doubling its underused passenger load). Dulles doesn't need a 5th runway because its not busy enough; nearly 4x busier LAX uses 4.
LHR only has 2 runways and they somehow make it work
@@stonecrusher99 Dubai Airport and the Hamad Airport in Doha also use 2 runways, and they happen to be the most popular connection airports for layovers between the west and the east since it's in the Middle East.
Actually Dulles should build not only a fifth but also a sixth runway.
Another North south one and an additional crosswind runway.
To also allow for parallel runway operation when there is a Northwest/southeast wind.
During winter storm with snow and ice, bad weather, fog you can't have enough runways.
The US doesn't need another totally cramped airport that can't expect any further because it's surrounded by the city on all sides.
Better build them before someone builds houses on the area and the airport becomes totally surrounded by buildings.
Look in the past Dulles used to be in the middle of nowhere like literally, now it's besically completely surrounded on all sides.
Give it a few years and a further expansion won't be possible.
Therefore creating huge delays if just a little thing during the operatyof the airport goes not 100% smooth.
The US doesn't need even more airports with hour long delays.
Just Look at LAX. The only have 4 runways but they are the airport with the highest number of runway incursions aka Near collisions between aircraft. So better have more runways to spread out the Airplanes on a larger area so everyone has enough room instead of cramping all in a tiny space.
That’s exactly what DCA is. It has the same purpose as LGA.

I believe I’ve read that BWI was underutilized for several years until Southwest made it a de facto hub.
That’s because for awhile BWI was the only DC airport willing to give SWA slots.
It was previously a hub for US Airways Express, so it was always seen as a viable low-cost hub for DC area traffic. Baltimore alone would not be able to support its current size. For a comparison, look at Pittsburgh's giant airport.
You can also get to BWI by Amtrak. There is a station labeled BWI on Amtrak and a shuttle bus goes between Amtrak station & airport.
