Last week, I got the honor to fly onboard one of Delta Air Lines final 747-400 flights. It was apart of their "747 Farewell Tour", which people were able to win seats by bidding miles earned with Delta's SkyMiles program. I met some amazing people and had experiences will never forget.

I was a Captain on NWA and then Delta’s ( airlines merged in 2009) B747-400 from 1999 to 2017 when the plane was retired. I have just under 8000 hours as a Captain on the plane.
What a plane…elegant and every one just loved to fly it. Flight deck had three rows of seats. Super comfortable. Nice bed room just behind the flight deck for the pilots on break.
The best thing about the interior of the plane: Lots and lots of room for passengers to stroll around. Bathrooms were large…and plenty of them. Overhead bins always and I mean always had plenty of room for passenger carry on luggage. The passenger upper deck was just pure luxury.14 passenger seats. (Was certified for 60 coach seats) 2 bathrooms. 2 Flight Attendants. And upstairs…away from any hulabalu.
My most memorable flights:
We ferried the plane (just four pilots…no crew, no flight attendants and no passengers…well …had just one passenger…my youngest daughter Elena) from Singapore where it had undergone maintenance to Anchorage and then Detroit. My daughter loved it.The only passenger on a 747-400.
Another flight : From LAX to Victorville Ca.Another ferry flight. Brought my son Andrew along. He got to log some 747-400 time! I put him in the right seat! The planes were painted in Delta colors at Victorville after the NWA- DL merger.
I often flew the Detroit- Shanghai route. We normally burned about 51,000 gallons of fuel. For that one flight. We often flew within 20 miles of the North Pole. As I flew that route for so many years, I could see the effects of global warming. My first years, the North Pole was always frozen solid, even in August. At the end of my career the ice would be broken in August. We always looked for Santa but never saw him🤣
I flew the first Delta 747 on the JFK Tel Aviv route and the very last JFK TLV flight by a Delta 747
My last flight on the 747 was in Dec 2017. DTW to LAX.We brought the plane empty there for a 747 farewell party.
I flew the 777 after the 747 at Delta. Definitely a downgrade. Like going from a Rolls Royce to a Volkswagen.
And I’d never thought the 747 would get retired before the MD80

QFS Aviation yep. I’m sure deltas MD80s are older than 747s.
With all the old MD80s and 717s Delta has bought in recent times....expect it to be around another Decade or two.....especially with the Bombardier CS Plane-Dumping fiasco still unresolved. And with the greedy "Mafia-like" Pilot Unions putting a strangle-hold on what they will and won't fly...Delta has no choice,but to keep the DC9s airborne for many years.

The Canadian Government-Bombarier will have to pay a 300% Tariff on each CS delivered to any US Carrier.....because of Plane Dumping. Airbus threw a fast curve-ball and purchased controlling Stake in the CS Series....their plan is to assemble them in Alabama (Plant yet to be built) and avoid Tariffs....but that plan is backfiring because the planes and Wing parts (more than 50%) will be brought from the UK/Europe in Knock-down Kit-Form.....they will still be subject to the Big Trump Import Tariff.
Pilot Union (S) now have a Big-Time hold on most non-Regional Carriers(like United,Delta,AA).....it's why it's in Delta's Financial Interest to keep Flying the DC9s...because they fall into a "grandfathered-in" Clause....whereby Delta does not have to exorbitant Salaries...like they would for the A320/737 Series....and the pact the Unions have made....the Greed gets worse as the planes get bigger.
I loved watching this video! I was the Flight Leader on this flight (the one that gave the crew rest tour) and you guys made it so memorable. It is an experience that I will never forget and I am so happy that this gets to live on for others to watch.

@Slaygent which is why I am gonna make an effort to fly on all sorts of aircraft as frequently as possible.
I remember in 2010 when Delta had recently gotten the 747's I was flying Delta out of Atlanta and before taking off i saw the gigantic 747 behind us. It was night and it looked amazing and all the windows were open and you could see the people on the upper deck. At the time I was a kid (7 or 8) and I loved planes and I had flown the A380 2 years earlier (unintentionally, I was 5) from JFK on Emirates 1 month after they launched it (which I later found out). I knew when I saw the 747 that it was the next plane I wanted to try and I told my dad right then that the next trip we do we should fly on the upper deck that plane. I still remember that moment clearly. Now 8 years later I still have not flown the 747 but hope to really soon. I live in Orlando, Florida in the U.S. and during the summer Virgin Atlantic flies 7 daily flights on the 747-400 (and they only have 8 in their fleet) and Lufthansa flies one as well. Hopefully I will get to try that soon (and maybe even fly in upper class in the nose 😊).

As someone who used to work as a FA for Northwest and United, I can tell you that I truly miss these planes already! The A380 is really nothing more than a Greyhound bus with wings. It will never match the style and grace of the B747. As always, thanks so much for sharing...

Northwest and Delta should get a lot of credit for keeping the 747s in good shape. Not one sign of wear and tear. Boeing 747, I love you with all my heart.

A Delta 747 brought me home from my first afghanistan deployment in 2012. I can remember the sound of 200,000 pounds of thrust from 4 big GE engines pushing that big Boeing down the runway in Kuwait to bring us all home safely. It was a great siund and a better feeling.
If you still want to tour the 747, Delta has a permanent display up at their museum in Atlanta, you can also tour their 767 that their employees bought for the airline
I wish they would upgrade to the 747-8i and keep the 747 legacy going!!! What a beautiful plane!

Great video. Fun memories. Cool you got to visit the rear crew rest. I remember the first time I got to see that, years ago. It was amazing,. I even flew on the old 47 that lost its cargo door out of Hawaii. A truly great airplane. Sad they are gone.

Even though im not an Aviation Buff, I would love to be a part of something like this. I will just have to be thankful that i live 1 mile from the Reno National Championship Air Races though. Great video young man.. You have a talent for this sort of thing.
39:21 I worked in that Clorox plant! I can remember waiting outside of their gate and just watching the lines of planes come in to land.

Awesome video! The 747 seemed to be in good condition despite its ages. So sad that I'd not flown on one before DL retired them

N674US was part of the 2nd order of 747 400's ordered by Northwest. The first 10, N661-670 were delivered 1989-1990. the next 4 N671-674 were delivered in 1999-2000. Will these last 4 also be scrapped? The first 10 saw close to 28 years of service, aside from 661 retired in 2015 and now in a museum at Atlanta airport N664US which suffered damage during a hailstorm while flying to Seoul in 2015. 2 More 747 400's , N675US and N676US were delivered in 2002 and thus are only a bit more than 15 years old.

I miss Delta's Boeing 747 And I wished to fly it but now it retired and is in the museum but you can still look at it P.S the aircraft that took its place was the a350 a luxury aircraft that'll improve Delta's future.

An 18 year old 747 is not an old aircraft. What did Delta decide to do with a plane that has so much more life left in it? Seems like a waste to just scrap it.

Relax the 747’s aren’t out of service entirely.... Go fly Lufthansa on their 747-8.....but I’m torn between either sitting in the Upper Deck or seat 1A.... However the old configuration where the first middle seat in first class was named the “Captains Chair”

Delta had some 747s in the 70s and 80s but they retired it when the lease was up and bought Lockheed L1011 tristar. I've flew on Delta L1011 back in 1994, we flew from LAX to Hawaii.

China Airlines also slimmed down their 747-400 fleet. They retired all of the Gen2 747-400s (delivered between 1995 - 1999) and only kept the Gen3 747-400s (the last 4 ever built) for charter and short slot-restricted routes.

Why didn't Delta consider the 747-800? It's more fuel efficient, and electronically more advanced than the 400 series. It must be just all about money and profit.

And it was scrapped. Let me put myself in this 747's shoes. Imagine you are 18 years old and you can't even live your adult life because some airline decided to have you killed. Why they keep MD 80s for 30 years and not 747s.
