Man, JoJo, This is old, but then so am I.( Ha! and sucks ) Anyway, I look @u often and ty 4 respect and props 2 Emmylou and Gram. I never have heard the alt studio cut of "Hearts on Fire". Sounds like Gram gave Emmy the lead, and he's backing her. Interesting, and always beautiful. I appreciate that beauty so much in an ugly world, and my ugly life. this is one of my VERY favourite Gram songs,and that is a big statement,but what i dislike intensely about this version is that Emmylous voice TOTALLY drowns out Grams.Sacreligious!
They were meant to be together. They were meant to drown each other out. and be one voice
they were meant to harmonise,which they did beautifully,but she overrides him and that ruins it.
i am so sorry that i didn't get to see Emmylou when she came to this country,hopefully she will come again one day :)
Kate D: Oh, good grief. It was recorded in THE STUDIO. That means that they were probably singing on separate mics, with a producer/engineer at the control board doing the mix. In fact, it sounds like it could be the very same vocals as the album version, with a possible difference in the way it's mixed: hence, "alternate studio version." Whatever, her vocal does not "drown out" or "override" his--his harmony is easily heard. You're entitled to your opinion, but not your own "facts."
Emmylou is EVERY bit as important to this song as Gram. I love Gram's work, but some of my very favorites are those with Emmylou singing duet or backup. She's a living legend, and a national treasure in my opinion.
I agree it's not the cleanest mix, but it's still an iconic pair and song.
