I just discovered him this year.
I'm so very sad that to it took me over 50 years to find him.
But, I'm so glad that I did.
I only looked him up, because he is was such an influence on my beloved Keith.
I am burning with regret for not doing so sooner.
And I'm burning with sadness that he went to Heaven when I was just a youngun.
      He is God's own singer.
      Guess God needed him back.
One more thing to look forward to, when I fly away, too. ❤️

@@gerrybradley8084 "if he lived a healthy lifestyle..." Gram Parsons, like many of his generation, was a victim of the times and his parents generation of not dealing with issues. The "silent generation" endured a lot, no doubt. But in not talking about their lives and experiences, they buried so much and then self medicated as much as they could. Back then alcohol was the usual "drug" of choice. Gram's father committed suicide and his mother was an alcoholic. They were both dead before Gram graduated high school. What is a teenager supposed to do with that? Get help? No such thing at the time. So Gram also self medicated. When he had Emmylou join his band and after some missteps they started to rehearse and coalesce into a tighter musical unit. One can clearly hear how they got better and better over time. They recorded 2 albums and toured. Finding gems like this one is special. Please don't say things like "if he lived a healthy lifestyle". He lived the only life he knew how to. Gram was straightening up, using less and making better music. But he decided to celebrate and in doing so thought he could consume what he had normally consumed in the past. Whether it was the alcohol or the morphine, he didn't know his body had weaned itself down from his previous levels of consumption. So he consumed what he used to consuming, not knowing it would kill him. This was very common in the early 1970's. There was so much we didn't know from needing talk therapy when you had parents with issues like Gram's to heroin/morphine withdrawal which meant you didn't need the large dose you last took to experience a high. The science simply wasn't available at the time. Gram Parsons was a gift we should all be happy we were blessed with. Sure, we wish he lived longer and made more great music. For whatever reason, that wasn't his path in life. Let's just be thankful for what we have and that he gave us great lyrics, musical compositions, his stellar bandmates and Emmylou Harris who has carried his legacy for many decades and still sings his songs as well as the ones she has written to honor him. Yes, he was a flawed human being, but he was one supremely talented one and who among us is perfect? I am personally happy to enjoy what he left us, and yes I wish he had lived, but we can't change that. We can only enjoy his legacy.

I grew up in the same town with the Parson family as well as the Snively families. Snively is Gram's family name. I saw him at the Derry Down on Cypress Gardens Road in about 1963-64 and then at the new Derry Down near McDonalds. The demon rum cursed the entire family for decades and most died young. I just wish Gram had lived as he had so much to offer and no doubt would have been iconic over the years. He was a sad kid all along and struggled to get a grip on life. Bless you Gram. Oh by the way the family were the citrus barons of Polk County and Gram had tons of money that also drove him down. How often we see that in life.

My folks sang songs like this back in the 50s all the way into the 90s..Classic Country..Hank Snow/Thompson, Red Foley, Lefty, Jim Reeves, Eddie Arnold, Ray Price n alot more.. I remember the all night parties until the next morning, dad would drive us all home after we slept on the couch all night and we'd all rest up and then they'd take us in tow again the next night and do it all again with a house full of relatives and guitars.. my older brother told me they did the same thing with him and big sister in the 50s. until mom left in 2000.. Thank God I learned a few of those great tunes along the way..

Brilliant. Amazing voice. Gram had it all and with Emmy Lou did some of the best duets ever. Truly gifted singer songwriters seem to have the ability to place their voice on someone else's song (Buck Owens in this case) and lift the song even higher. I kept telling my husband about how wonderful Gram was, this was prior to Amazon & it was hard to find Flying Burrito Brothers, but we got Fallen Angels album right after it’s release, in the early 90’s, our sons grew up with that album & I did get several FBB albums in the 90’s, my oldest son just had to buy Fallen Angels, for himself, BC he loves Gram & Emmy So Much!!!

@@weallen67 I'm with you Bill with Neil on steel. Also 3 other posters name him. Not sure how A J Coh thinks Al Perkins is on steel here. At 3:55 you can hear Gram introducing Neil Flanz on steel. I remember Neil back in Montreal at the Country Palace on Sherbrooke street and other venues. The timing of this show fits perfectly with Neil's time with Gram.

Now that name Neil Flanz brings back a memory for me. From Montreal , I used to frequent the Blue Angel Café on Drummond and also The Monterrey on St. Catherines Street back in the early /mid 1960's.. Seems to me a steel player named Neil Flanz played at The Blue , I think , with my sister in law, married to Olie Strong. I think the band was Mickey Lee and The Swingsters . That was 1962 at The Blue Angel. Do you have any connection to that era in Montreal? I also have a clipping advertising Dusty King & The Country Cats featuring Neil Flanz at the Country Palace the same week with Bill Monroe.Mike

very rare. they didnt have time to do any PR for the Gram Emmy Lou team and then he died. What a loss. You can tell he is too stoned on this recording. But that particular era was dangerous for drug users as none of us knew yet what could kill us, we just wanted to go higher. Look at the Allman Bros too. Incredibly, Keith Richard is still alive and playing well.

I've always been curious what Gram thought about Lobo's early '70s hits. I don't think they were in touch by then, but it must've been weird to hear your old '60s bandmate crooning soft rock tunes on AM radio several years later.
