This performance sounded very "country:. Emmylou Harris harmony was very distinctive and beautiful. I am glad you picked this song P.J. I have never heard Gram Parsons voice. Wonderful reaction P.J.
"Hickory Wind" is a beautiful song and perhaps Gram's finest and most enduring composition. His recording of this song with the Byrds is great, but his duet with Emmylou helps take the song to new heights.
Gram had an appreciation, love, and reverence for traditional country music that far out weighs what is shown by the current Nashville music establishment. They are too busy trying to sound popish to gain listeners. This cycle has happened before. History doesn't repeat itself but it does often rhyme.
I was a Sophomore in college the year Gram passed, and I discovered him, the Byrds, the FBBs, and Emmylou around that time but after his passing. Gram doesn’t get the credit he deserves for his contributions to music. He,through his friendship with Keith Richards, influenced The Rolling Stone’s, and you have already talked of his importance in Emmylou music. While Waylon Willie and the other “outlaw” artists were pushing country towards the freedom of rock music Gram was taking folk rock closer to country
I had never heard this duet, but I’m a big fan of the Sweetheart of the Rodeo album by The Byrds. I love this version with Gram and Emmy Lou together. Wonderful! As great as The Byrds harmonies were, and they were fabulous, it’s hard to beat Emmy Lou Harris singing harmony with anyone. Thanks again, P.J.

What harmony those two! Always loved hearing this song. Emmylou was so in love with Gram. I always love to sing the alto whenever I play this great song.
I admire him for bucking the system and playing this at the Opry... I worked very hard of the Blues and Country, and I did it so well. Patrons at the many bars I played, wanted common covers. Gram was that one real artist that had zero hells to give. And definitely his best work was with Emmylou. Although there's some great Flying Burrito Brothers tunes that he did, too. Just such a restless soul.

I have been listening to the Byrds this week, even more so since the announcement of David Crosby’s death yesterday. Included in my listening was the Sweet Heart of the Radio album. Parsons joining the Byrds significantly influenced the Byrds move toward country-rock from its origins as a rock band. I find Parsons, including Emmylou Harris, more suited for Americana-Roots genre than Country music. It’s the blending of folk-bluegrass- rock, without the slick Nashville sound - and this is especially true of ‘70’s Country music. I first saw Emmylou in concert in the mid-70’s soon after she formed her HotBand. She opened for Willie Nelson and Ricky Skaggs was played guitar-fiddle-and mandolin. Emmylou always had the best musicians in her bands, including Sam Bush (formerly of the progressive bluegrass band New Grass Revival) and Rodney Crowell. These singer/songwriter musicians transcend genres. And like Emmylou, these days, are rarely, if ever heard, on country music stations.
This is what's beautiful about life! When music, or art of any kind, makes the hair on your neck stand up, and gives you a chill! Passion is what makes life beautiful, and you can hear it in both Gram and Emmy Lou!❤❤❤❤❤ Love it!
It was before my time so I didn't experience it real time and often fail to appreciate just how much blending and blurring of the lines between "genres" was going on at that time. I love this song Hickory Winds, as well as Magnolia Wind. Both of these songs get in my head and get stuck there all day. I find them very beautiful with the lyrics and the tune of the songs. I also enjoy listening to Gillian Welch and David Rollins sing Hickory Winds.

Okay, I love trains, have been fro SLC to Denver on the Zephyr, as well as shorter hops, but seriously -Florida to California would be 5-6 days on the dang thing. You'd have to write songs, just to stay sane. Love this song, love this version. Thank you.
Having too much too soon can be dangerous. Nothing like a low pay, low status, physically hard job for at least a part of your younger life to give you perspective. If you are born on the top of the hill where do you go from there. After the death of Randy Meisner I went down the rabbit hole of the Eagles to Poco to Gram Parsons and the effect of his blending rock and country. Would there have been an Emmylou Harris with out Parsons? Where did all those years go? RIP Gram.
Emmy Lou was ready to give up music and stick to waiting tables when she was introduced to Gram Parsons. Her love for him is evident though they weren't together because he was married
Emmy Lou was ready to give up music and stick to waiting tables when she was introduced to Gram Parsons. Her love for Gram is evident when she speaks of him, though they weren't ever together because he was married. He had real respect for her. Good lady and a fine artist.
Salute! And Thank You, for reintroducing me to Gramms work!! Using Lynyrd Skynyrd (I grew up on Southern Rock) as an example, my daddy used to say Rock n Roll would become Country. I said he had it backwards. Most all contemporary Country bands depend on an aggressive electric guitar. Gramm brought Emmy Lou into the spotlight, and her work with him in harmony, is as American Music as it gets!! It stands on it own, in my book.
He also eventually pissed off Roger McGuinn and Parson’s voice was taken off of the Sweetheart album. It was one of the first country rock albums, another sub genre worth a dive. The Flying Burrito Brothers, Poco, Michael Nessmith (Monkeys fame) , Buffalo Springfield, early Linda Ronstat and early Eagles among others.
I had heard that it was contract issues which made them take off Parson's voice. He was apparently still under contract to a different record company than the Byrds. Now I'm not sayin' he didn't piss off Roger McGuinn, but I think McGuinn respected Parsons enough that he wouldn't just take off his vocals out of spite. It was a very complicated relationship due to Parsons' addictions.
If country music had followed this and the path on of bands like the New Riders of the Purple Sage... instead of where it has gone, I might actually like it.
You should check out Guy Clark's " Magnolia Wind" done by EmmyLou and John Prine at Guy Clark's tribute concert. The song is probably the most haunting love song nobody has ever heard of and Harris and Price singing together ... you got to hear them. Her voice so lovely and Prine is Prine, Nobody sings like John Prine., the perfect mix.

Of course, the Eagles remembered him with the song ‘My Man’ - written in honor of him
Thank you for this tribute to Gram & Emmy …so many hours and miles spent driving tethered to the voice of the Grevious Angel in my youth in the 70’s. Still powerful as ever to listen to, if only I could get that album on vinyl. 😎
Sweet tune Pj! I have to agree with your review and karowah1's, (7 from the top) also.... peace my Friend!
The Amelas One
You should follow this up with Emmylou's own haunting version of this song. One of my favorites. From her "Blue Kentucky Girl" album. There's also a great live performance by her.
I have never heard this. I LOVE IT!! I might add this to my repertoire for jam sessions.
Makes me think of Magnolia Wind, one of my favorite Guy Clark songs.
I love this song Hickory Winds, as well as Magnolia Wind. Both of these songs get in my head and get stuck there all day. I find them very beautiful with the lyrics and the tune of the songs. I also enjoy listening to Gillian Welch and David Rollins sing Hickory Winds.
In the air I am smelling, "Hickory Wind"
Thanks for featuring one of the greatest duo’s of all time & a truly masterpiece of a song! So beautiful “Hickory Wind” looking forward to checking out your channel. Cheer’s!
@Twang-Train
Many thanks!
Okay, I love trains, have been fro SLC to Denver on the Zephyr, as well as shorter hops, but seriously -Florida to California would be 5-6 days on the dang thing. You'd have to write songs, just to stay sane.
Love this song, love this version.
Thank you.
That was Awsome
The Angel Oak. Johns Is. SC. the picture of the oak tree. It's like 300 years old.
Thank you for this.
Great stuff Mr. D.J.!
Some of these wonderful songs may never have been written without alcohol.
Agreed!
Poco was fantastic! I was 17 when I saw them live at American University outdoors in the summer in 1971!!! I was so happy!
The guy knew how to write songs and sing from the soul!
Awesome
He cool
If country music had followed this and the path on of bands like the New Riders of the Purple Sage... instead of where it has gone, I might actually like it.
You should check out Guy Clark's " Magnolia Wind" done by EmmyLou and John Prine at Guy Clark's tribute concert. The song is probably the most haunting love song nobody has ever heard of and Harris and Price singing together ... you got to hear them. Her voice so lovely and Prine is Prine, Nobody sings like John Prine., the perfect mix.
the best ever!
