Last year the Panasonic MZ2000 had the overall best shadow detail in the shootout. How come the Z95A scores last in this area this year? I‘m not talking about flashing artifacts, only about the shadow detail tests. Is the Z95A worse than the MZ2000 in this regard? Or have the other manufacturers improved so much? Or is it because different movies were selected for testing this year?
That's what I wonder as well, my guess is the latter. The near black region is also subject to a lot of panel variance though, maybe that's they reason the scored so differently. Just take the A95L, last year it was pretty much dead last in terms of shadow detail and now - with the exact same TV - it's more or less tied with the S95D for first place. So either Sony did improve things via software updates, the calibrators managed to extract more accuracy out of the TV or it's simply panel variance. Maybe it's also scene dependent and the TVs handle different dark scenes better than others (they didn't use the same content this year). The near black range also changes A LOT during the first few hundred hours of usage so maybe some of the TVs this year or last year weren't fully run in yet...
@redrum_2k: As noted in our 4th September 2024 review, the Panasonic Z95A exhibited some shadow detail crushing out of the box. Despite using the most granular near-black luminance adjustment controls on the TV, we found it challenging to fully correct this in HDR, partly because the new Fire TV UI obstructs over half the screen during calibration, making precise adjustments more difficult. Also, the new Fire TV OS meant that CalMAN AutoCal support wasn't ready on the Panasonic Z95A during the days leading up to the shootout.
@floz9718: We didn’t use the same A95L as last year, where 55-inch TVs were compared. This year, we opted for 65-inch models to allow for the possibility of including the Sony BRAVIA 9 in the shootout.

The upscaling judgement of the g4 is unrealistic cos it doesn't use ai upscaling feature for copyrighted content. Which is about 90-95% of what you will be watching. Other brands like Samsung will use all its upscaling power for everything including copyrighted content
Exactly! LG LIED once agains about it's AI Upscalling. They hype it up every yr even though ot doesn't work on Cooyrighted content. This yr is even worse because they claimed the A12 on the G4 DID work on copyrighted content.
@@paulcanniff4308 I think Panasonic only has that fancy feature that enhances HDR10 movies (not HDR10+ or Dolby Vision). Not sure if there's anything else that actually makes Panasonic better than Oppo when it comes to 4K Blu-ray Disc players.
Panasonic is new to the U.S. OLED game and they don't manufacturer their own OLED panels like Samsung and LG do. They use LG's MLA with a heatsink. Sony uses Samsung's QD-OLED plus their own processing and $$$ power. (Sony makes movies)
Any TV missing Dolby Vision will never have a place in my home theater. Samsung shouldn't even be considered. And tvs with only 2 full bandwidth HDMI ports in 2024 are also a full pass. Glad the G4 won
Most people only stream content in their living rooms. I’m assuming the low bitrate and upscaling categories is our best gauge on how streaming quality will be?
Correct. Also pay attention to motion handling scores if you use it too. Although the G4 won all 3 anyway. It also actually has Dolby Vision which works properly which is what streaming HDR is.
Samsung with no Dolby Vision = hard pass. For watching movies, the quality bump from DV far outweighs the tiny differences between these displays. Also, Samsung colors are blue and offputting.
Do keep in mind Samsung only won the sub category of watching 4K Blu-ray with no motion smoothing in a dark room. That's a really niche use case for most people with LG rightfully taking the crown. It is frustrating they don't actually test Dolby Vision though.
@@paulc5389 Watching 4k movies in a dark room sounds like typical home theater. How can that be a niche use case, it is pretty much the only reason why I would buy a big OLED TV. According to the chart Samsung won "Best Home Theatre TV" and LG won "Best Living Room TV".

G4 came in 3rd place in the Value Electronics TV Shootout, so surprising that the G4 comes out on top here. Although VE focused primarily on home theater and it did come in 3rd place for home theater here too. My take away is that you can't really go wrong with the S95D, A95L or the G4 as they are all really close with each having their own pros/cons. Panasonic are so overrated every year, glad Samsung keeps improving their QD OLED Panels. S95F vs A95M will be a Battle for the ages next year when both introduce new Processors. Don't think the G5 will be able to compete against 83" sized QD Oleds. 😱🔥
Meh. I own A95L, G4, S95D and Bravia 9 (all in their largest sizes, but the G4 at 83"). The Bravia 9 has the most impressive PQ and HDR of the bunch. It's the best! That goes for light controlled dark rooms as well as brightly lit ones. Bravia 9 looks best regardless.
@@lpromer4796in my opinion, the A95L is still the best overall tv taking price out of the equation due to having the best combination of color and processing/upscaling. Vincent seems mad at Sony these days for charging high prices and resting on their laurels in 2024 and being sneaky by removing features from their 2024 tvs (I.e. Sony Bravia 8 doesn’t have smooth gradation feature and may not even have the XR processor even though it’s marketed as having it). As for the 2024 tv’s, The LG G4 sustained brightness make it stand out in a bright room but it lacks in color vs QD OLED panels. The 3rd generation QD OLED panel makes the Samsung S95D stand out in a dark room with 4k hdr content due to superior color brightness but it lacks in processing/upscaling and many don’t like the matte finish… Sony does not really lack significantly anywhere except for brightness (and for most it is more than bright enough). Also for gaming it only has the 2 HDMI 2.1 ports. But taking gaming out of the equation, the Sony A95L is still the best overall TV but competition has caught up or even surpassed in some areas and so it’s probably not worth the extra price ($1500 more for 77 inch A95L than competition in the US right now) making it kind of a poor buying decision for most even if it is technically the best picture quality with QD OLED panel and great processing...

This just means there's no point paying too much for a TV when newer and lower priced TVs will likely beat uber expensive ones like the A95L after just 1 year lol
that's just the way technology works. It gets better every year. plus it's not like that Sony doesn't have it's merits after a year. it used Google TV os natively ,which I'll take any day over Samsungs monstrosity or even LG's. cause using Google OS allows you to use a lot of custom apps and/or allow you to do some radical customization to for example your remote .
Unless you're a cinephile or otherwise inclined to buy the best (even if you can barely tell the difference), always buy last year's or even the year before's TV. You can find excellent prices as stock is cleared, and ever since 2019 (at least for Sony and LG) the quality has been breathtaking. I bought an LG C9 in 2020 and it still makes me happy every time I turn it on. In a year or two I'm going to get the C4, or if the C5 comes with MLA panel I'll wait a bit longer.

The best TV or best OLED TV? I asked because you haven't reviewed the bravia 9 yet, so I'm curious how was that excluded from this test if it is the best TV in general?
The best is great but expensive. You guys should do this with Bravia 8, C4, S90D, and Z85A and again with Mini LED Bravia 7 & 9, W95A, etc. (hisense/tcl) I went Bravia 8. It's good. I wonder if I should have went with the S90D. I went Sony for the Theater U and Bravia Core app.

Supposedly the Calman calibration app wasn’t ready in time for the shootout. Not saying how big of a difference it would have made, but something to consider.
Surprising results! Lg G4 is a balanced TV. But it suffers from color desaturation. It seems Lg prioritizes brightness at the expense of color. I know this is an inherent problem with WOLED. The washed out color desaturation. But Panasonic's z95a maintains color. It does not get as bright as the LG g4. But it is able to maintain color. It is pretty noticeable when viewed side by side. Definitely surprising results. I thought Panasonic would do better this year. Considering it is able to maintain color better than LG g4. The LG g4 is the most versatile TV. Did you have to go into the service menu and disable the autodimming since the images were hold statically on screen for so long for the judges to compare?
@Animal_lives_matter: Yes, we disabled auto-dimming in the service menu on the LG G4 and the Samsung S95D, but couldn't do so on the Panasonic Z95A and Sony A95L (Japanese brands are more conservative). The content was looped rather than paused/ held statically, but if more time was needed by the judges, we asked them to exit the room first, then refreshed the content/ TVs to defeat the auto-dimming before inviting them back in to continue watching.

Any TV missing Dolby Vision will never have a place in my home theater. Samsung shouldn't even be considered. And tvs with only 2 full bandwidth HDMI ports in 2024 are also a full pass. Glad the G4 won
Yes. My primary reasons for selecting LG C4 for my living room.

Good timing. I just received my brand new 77inch G4 today. Love it so far. A substantial step up from my 77inch LG CX.
Wow you had the exact same set up as me. I get mine delivered tomorrow!
I prefer the picture on the QD-OLED panels to even the G4 but to each their own.
Samsung with no Dolby Vision = hard pass. For watching movies, the quality bump from DV far outweighs the tiny differences between these displays. Also, Samsung colors are blue and offputting.
Very good point!

Hi FOMO! So you agree with the results? Sony A95L not the king of tvs anymore?

That's how literally all technology works. 1 or 2 year old models are always better value. Tv, gpu, phone, doesn't matter.
