I've owned this rifle for about 10 years. Have become adept with the iron sights but just purchased the Vortex Crossfire II Rimfire scope. Ended up here as I'm excited about my purchase.
I bought a Ruger 10/22 a few years ago for my grandson to be able to shoot when he visits. Although it’s “his” gun, it’s one of my favorites for plinking. You are right about some of the cost cutting driving you nuts. I replaced that stupid too long screw right away! Good shooting and fun! Thanks for a nice video. God bless.
10/22s are such a great guns! A 22lr is a must in IMO for any gun collection. If I was forced to down size my gun collection, a 10/22 lr would be among the last to go, or one that I would want to keep outside of 12 gauge....
This is such a reliable gun. My parents have one that always holds zero perfectly. They gave me a beat up one from an auction to rebuild because I always wanted one. I got a FJ Feddersen 18” threaded barrel, new bolt assembly and just finished a custom made black walnut stock shaped like the Promag Archangel target stock and I can’t wait to try it out
Good video Doc. It’s one of the cheaper 22 out there but in my opinion it’s one of the best. As far as the action release once you get how it operates it’s a minor hassle. Best thing about that rifle is the after markets you can buy for it. I turned mine into a bull match barrel synthetic stock. Love that rifle. I’ve shot gophers consistently at 150 yards with mine. Easy one screw to take the barrel off.
Great video as usual Doc! I love the way you smile when you say "...It's very accurate!" This is one of the best .22 semi-auto's around, and although I don't own one, it's been on my must have lists for years now! Ruger's HQ's is just across town in Southport, CT although they no longer make anything here but in Arizona and New Hampshire, Connecticut used to be the gun making capital of the USA! This would be an nice addition to my collection but sadly no more room in my safe! PS Amazingly accurate for a production made gun!
Don't forget Mayan N.C. that's where they make their AR 556. And you know what to do when your safe is full? You buy another safe and start filling it up!
The Ruger 10/22 is a great .22 rifle. Check out the take down version. As far as CT formerly being the gun making capital of the USA, that was a long time ago, before the government there turned totalitarian. A majority of the original 13 Colonies are anything but free now. They are probably worse now than they were under King James.
I have an older 10/22. Bought a couple of those newer 25 round mags. Worked good each about 500 to 1000 rounds than started jamming. Original 10 round runs flawless.
As coincidence would happen, I just bought my first Ruger 10/22 a couple of days ago. I had been meaning to buy one for years and finally got around to buying it. I am so happy I did as I also got along with it a pack of 333 rounds of 36 grain Winchester hollow point copper plated ammo for only 24 buckaroos. Like yours mine is super accurate. But I haven't mounted a scope yet on it. I think I'm going to mount the old Weaver 3-9x scope that came with my Savage Axis .308 rifle. But now I'm just enjoying it's more traditional iron sights. I'm glad I waited to find one on sale rather than buy a cheaper .22 rifle. The Ruger 10/22 is just such a great rifle. With the BX-25 magazines it also makes a "not terrible" emergency home defense rifle as well especially for older people who need something lightweight and with almost no recoil. As long as they know how to quickly clear a malfunction they'd be good to go. But for me, this is going to be just my fun plinking rifle. I may also try hunting rabbit with it.
The only problem with a rifle scope on a rimfire is that the parallax is set to 100 yds. You will have. Lot of cross hair movement on closer targets. Rimfire scopes have the parallax set to 50 yards so you can shoot more accurately up close. Also, rimfire scopes typically have a finer cross hair for shooting at smaller targets.
Thanks for sharing, but I went through couple of rimfire scopes and none of the held it for me. Maybe the reason is I use cheap scopes but I really don't feel like spending too much on rimfire scope.
Thanks to you my friend I will buy one with the same scope this month for my birthday I am looking at the Ruger takedown Thank you brother for a good video✌🏽
When I saw this, I thought about you guys. "Rhino blinds R180" blew my mind when I saw this. You can see through from inside to outside, but not the other way around. Have a great hunting!
I agree about using a regular rifle scope on a hunting .22 LR rimfire. The effects of parallax set for 50 yards, as is somewhat typical with rimfire scopes, and parallax set at 100 yards, as is somewhat typical with most regular rifle scopes, is negligible. I've tried both and prefer a regular rifle scope. I used a Burris Fullfield E1 2-7X35 on my Marlin Model 60. It's so accurate at 25-50 yards, and further, that I have no reason to use any other scope. I've got Weaver brand risers on my dovetail, and Burris brand Weaver style rings on those. It's a great combo.
Good shooting out there! One of my favorite rifles. I agree with all the pro's and con's you identified. It's a great platform, definitely not perfect though.
You definitely got a good one as ive seen many 10/22's that struggle to shoot that well. And i'm sure it will group even tighter if you get that trigger pull down with a trigger kit.
Question: With the Ruger base plate, were you able to still see the iron sights with the scope rings you used? If so I'll look for a similar pair of scope rings that allow me to see under them. Also... if it did work, do you think that a cheek riser would be beneficial on the butt-stock?
Awesome shooting!! Just got my Ruger 10/22 can't wait to put a scope on it. I'm glad I went with the Ruger 10/22 instead of the Marlin Model 60 well I can't find one anyway LOL but the more I did research the more I like the Ruger. Everyone is still going crazy looking for the model Marlin 60 stainless steel. I think I made the right choice. Word has it that Ruger will make the Marlin Model 60 next year let's see what happens, they just wanted to stick with the 45-70 for now.
That bolt hold open feature should be redesigned. It can be modified with a dremel which is an improvement but it's still hokey. The rest of the rifle and the 10 round magazines are practically perfect. The 25 rounders are literally hit or miss in the quality department.
There's noting hokey about it if done right!. Iv'e only done about 30 of them, And every one works perfect!. It takes 10 minutes using a dremel and a chain saw sharpening roto stone. Or you can pay $15 to $20 for a Kidd Inovation or a Volquartson for the same bolt release + ship.. It's up to you.......
The scope is 2-7x32 with Dead-Hold BDC. Sounds like great but make sure your screws are in good condition with Monstrum picatinny rail. Have fun, be safe n God bless.
I really like Ruger firearms but I have been really unsatisfied with the “new” 10/22’s. There are a few very simple things they could have improved upon but rather than making them better, they went to a bunch of plastic to include the barrel band and the trigger housing. The bluing looks like cheap spray paint. They are still better than most but not as good as they used to be. Find an older one and you will be much happier with it.
@@vameathunter2771 I was my first time getting a scope..I can see now the difference between the the mounting systems or ring mounts..I can see why rugged mounting is needed..especially when breaking the gun down and cleaning it can get bumped..even leaning it in the corner
Its too bad you you can't put a silencer on a 10 22 unless you get an integrally suppressed barrel. 🤑 but thats how the 10 22 money pit gets started i suppose
I guess one of those cheap made scopes is ok for a 22lr. 10/22 is a great little gun. The scope makes the gun tho Iv been around for 61 years, nothing beats a leupold scope. Those dinky scopes are ok for plinking I guess ,for kids anyway.
I would wager that if the person with the cheaper scope spends the extra money on practice they will be more effective than the person with the more expensive scope.

Ruger had aluminum buttplates and aluminum barrel bands on the 10/22 until 1980 when they changed both to polymer. BTW I'm a new subscriber today.
Thanks for the info and subscribing.

You might want to spray little of wd-40 or gun oil on the ammo and try it.
