- We're back! At Montgomery Community College taking a 30 year old Ruger 10/22 and turning it into a legend! See the skill of the Gunsmithing program staff and learn along the way! After it's complete Chris takes it out for a little squirrel hunt! Does it shoot? Find out on this episode! • S8 Ep7 River Floating ...
Just came across this video. Man O Man what a video. That's just unbelievable how they went from 1.1/4-1/4 groups. I've got to do this to my Ruger 10/22, 22lrs...l also have a Ruger 44mag I bought when I was around 9 years old. I worked the summer building fence on a farm in 1969.
And the day l got paid l told my dad that I wanted to buy a Ruger 44mag with my money. I had to wait a whole week before we went to town. And that week felt like a year.
This is so awesome. So many others install a new barrel, stock and/or other "upgrades" without a base showing how the original gun shot in the first place. Can't compare without proof. Nice work!
Got you a Squirrel Killer now Buddy!
Very nicely done video. And I have seen some nicely redone 10/22 projects. But I haven't seen any 10/22's that could compete well in the benchrest matches. If they could shoot a group like what has been shown here. There would be.
What we didn’t see was what ammo was used in the shoot after the work was completed. Was it the same Tac-22 or something better? Ammo can make a huge difference in performance.
Simply awesome. The attention to detail + knowledge is amazing!
Mark dye looking good ol buddy. 1995 seems like a lifetime ago..that wook stock looks interesting..Good to see ya.
Skip ahead to time index 19:07. See how the bolt bounces back and forth after the shot? That'll be pulling the next round in and out until it settles. Can that be eliminated or reduced? Would an aftermarket recoil buffer pin reduce that? Great video!
Other than a heavier recoil spring, no.
Bolt bounce is a thing on self loading guns. It's an issue with full auto but as civilians we don't have to worry about that
The bolt buffer only works on rearward travel, not forward, a stiffer recoil spring would affect bolt bounce.
Fantastic and informative video!
Really enjoyed this video!
Thanks for sharing it.
Great work!
Amazing. Far beyond my means I'm sure, but really liked all the skill shown and a great improvement.
You can say rebuild, but was more like a transformation, a total shift in 22 cal. consciousness!
I did my own rebuild om my 50th anniversary with ruger stainless target barrel and magpul 22 hunter stock and trigger parts using bushnell ar 22lr scope shots nice
Incredible work!!!🤩I subscribe
@@michelcomeau4333 Thank you!
I've almost completed a build similar to this. Bolt is stock and just radiused but that will be done shortly. I'm already shooting dime sized groups at 50 yards.
I rock my 10/22 pretty much stock. Synthetic bolt stop is all. 3-9 scope and I can write my initials on a target!
could you put a list of parts used on that build? I love the way it turned out...and am thinking about upgrading my current gun.
That's a good idea! We will do that!
Awesome video
Got a stock 10/22 that came with that same bull barrel. Would love to have that tune-up. That's beautiful!
They cut the breach face down but I didn't see anything done with the extractor channel? Must have to file that down so the extractor can still grab the rim? Or are they not worried about extracting live rounds since they are probably getting stuck into the lands anyway?
1. When grinding the OEM bold face was the face square with the rest of the bolt?
2. On the barrel recrown & the settings the tenon back did you have to machine the extraction slot?
3. When using the OEM bolt what about pinning the front of the bolt to prevent vertical striker pin walking up and down. OEM bolts are staked on top of bolt.
That being said it's the best hands on 10/22 I have seen to date & I'm pushing 70, had My 1st at 10yrs.
1). The face wasn't square, and they usually aren't.
2). Yes, the extractor slot needs to be deepened after shortening the tenon
3). We have pinned the firing pins on some, and it does seem to make a difference. The bolts are relatively hard and difficult to drill.
When you grind down the face of the bolt, what did you do to the extractor claw (???) Now your extractor is further ahead of the front edge of the cartridge rim.
How about the slot in the barrel for the extractor (???) What did you do to change that as well (???)
I saw no discussion about the ammo used, before, or after.
I'd like to know that myself. However he didn't do anything to the primer pocket face in the bolt so it shouldn't change the extractor claw grasp on the shell rim. I'd like to know if anything was done to the shape of the X-claw or the X-claw slot in the barrel. Good questions
The extractor slot has to be recut after shortening the tenon. The video just did not show it. The final groups were shot with SK Rifle Match.
Sorry about your laws. Suppressed rimfire is probably the funnest I’ve ever had with a 10/22. Nice lookin setup there.
Nice work.
Worked on my own bolt. Lapped the face with 600 then 1,200 diamond flat stone. Went slow, only stroked one direction careful and easy, feeling it mate first before moving it. Did the same on the top, bottom. Rounded the back to a nice radius. Breech chamber polished very fine. Aftermarket bolt catch, firing pin, extractor and mag release also plunger. I can't alter the barrel like they did, good info. The factory charging handle is a joke though, swapped that out. That stock is pretty slick but a custom receiver would be the way to go with a rear stock screw.
You lapped the bolt face, for whatever reason, did you set the headspace? That would’ve made a difference but just polishing the bolt face will do nothing except make it look pretty.
You could use a file to shorten the chamber, if you’re careful.
Or run the rod down the barrel and add the patch in the receiver and pull it out or use the fabric cleaner with no rod. Also, there is modern lubricants that are changing everything.
You guys should have modified the factory barrel. Lets see what you guys can really do, and that would have been good proof. Anyone can slap a heavier barrel on from a majority of different suppliers/manufactures and get better groups than a bone stock Ruger 10/22 barrel. Also wondering if the customer wanted you to change his see through rings? All the hand fitting and polishing, like the trigger work would be expensive, if having someone like you do it. A person would be money ahead to just buy a Volquartsen target hammer and trigger kit for $100.00, rather than have you mess with a factory trigger. You should get a before and after weight on this build, and ask him how it compares out in the squirrel hunting fields after a day of hunting. Also, total cost on this build should be mentioned. I'm pretty sure its going to be spendy. That stock is overrated for a 10/22. A Magpul Hunter X22 would have sufficed, and it would have cost $400 less. In the world of 10/22's, you can go unnecessarily overpriced, or you can keep costs down, and end up in the same fork in the road, in terms of accuracy. No mention of ammo used in the rifle after the build either. A lot of wool being pulled over the eyes here guys.
Kidd makes the best trigger group, he did shorten the chamber on the heavy barrel, he would’ve gotten similar results with the factory barrel. What I don’t agree with is setting back the shoulder, not necessary, since it headspace’s on the rim and that is adjusted by modifying the bolt, I would’ve done things differently.
I shot groups as little as that with my Remington 597, with Harris bipod, Volquartsen trigger, laminated thumbhole stock and 6-24x50 scope.
With SK rifle match ammunition.
Nice build!
Like your show, just liked & subscribed, Kentucky
Thank you Lonnie! Maybe one day there will be a Kentucky ALL OUT!
That gun almost sounds suppressed is the barrel internal suppressed or just that quite.
@@matthew1790ML the barrel isn’t suppressed but you are correct that it does sound compressed. I immediately thought it was quieter when I first shot it. Thanks for watching!
You mentioned a short course on the 10/22s, is that still available? I’m retired and always ready for another hobby. Great video by the way, I have a Ruger 10/22 Competition model that shoots well but could do better.
Congrats on your retirement man.
Thanks, getting old is not great but better if you don’t have to clock in every day. I just sent both 10/22s to Connecticut Precision Chambering to get the same process done as they did here, very reasonable and 10/22s is all he does. Taking the measurements on the bolt and chamber told me Ruger does it for reliability and not accuracy so hopefully he’ll fix that.
Is that number for that gunsmith? Have a 22 I'd like to have the barrel & bolt worked on like they did yours. Big improvement on the 10/22. Also been a year. How many rds you fire though it? Like to see a fall 2023 tests on CCI SV, Tac 22 & the CCI Mini Mags HP.
I do this, no need to set the shoulder back, for some reason they all insist, same thing with Clark, leave the shoulder alone, if anything it improves feeding. The 10-22 headspace’s on the rim.
Am I right by saying after everything is all done you still have the leftover parts to put together the old 10/22?
How often do you come up to Granville County. If you are a big squirrel hunter, I am to. 👍
We get up there from time to time. I wouldn't call myself a big squirrel hunter but I do love getting after them once or twice a year!
I have a few projects I would like to have them work on. It is hard to find a good gun smith
WOW your video is WAY COOL. I LOVE 22lr rifles and pistols. I've got a POSSIBLE project that I would like to know the guys at that Community college gunsmithing classes could HELP ME with a VERY NEAT INTERESTING old PRE-WWII commercial German Mauser. It's chambered in 7mm Mauser (7X57), it has a KRUPP barrel, twin set triggers and all MATCHING NUMBERS. The problem is that the end of the barrel on the inside of it was messed up. Can the end of the barrel be counter bored? The damage appears to be only about 1" depth maybe a little bit more. I'd like to RESURRECT it, be a shame to let a POTENTIALLY GREAT rifle not be fixed. I'm sure if it could talk it would have INTERESTING STORIES to tell.🤔😯😳😮💨
What ammo did you use at the final??? A huge factor in the potential accuracy🥵🥵🥵
SK Rifle Match
Did you say you were hunting in Granville co? If so would love to have you come back to film a dog hunting video. Looks like Kerr lake in the video.
We’d be up for a dog hunt! In fact a deer dog hunt will be dropping here on Sunday! Check it out and in the meantime we can talk about a hunt up in Granville Co. It’s very difficult to capture a good dog hunt.
Let's do a Person/Caswell hunt! We have the places for it!
As good as an Anschutz with semi auto. Where can we buy one here in canada? How would it cost a job like this?
Where could I get a stock like that that's sharp
wooxstore.com/collections/models-standard/products/wild-man-precision-stock
Nice groups .... To me though concerning the bolt they should have locked down the firing pin from jumping around which stock Ruger bolts are famous for that nor did they say anything about checking the firing pin for proper length or for proper ignition .... And something that doesn't affect accuracy but is a neat little trick is they should have beveled were the bolt handle goes into the bolt for ease of maintenance for taking the bolt out or putting it back in.
That's an awesome build but when I tried to get MCC to help me with a gunsmith work for my rifle I was told that they no longer work on guns for the public. I guess it's who you know...
It kind of is a “ who you know” situation. Lol. This was done for promotional purposes to let the public at large see what is offered in the program.
Our main business is in offering classes so that people can learn to perform these tasks themselves, rather than in doing the work for the public at large.
@@markdye1031 still offering the rimfire accurizing...it's been a long while we're did all your hair go...lol..Really good to see you.
@@markdye1031 Sure, because everybody has all this equipment to do this work in their basement or garage - NOT!
So, short answer... why doesn't Ruger do all this right at the factory ?
Continue making the stock 10- 22's as well as ones that'll shoot this good, let the customers chose a 1-1/4" stock rifle or a .25" target rifle. I figure within a year hardly any stock riflres would be sold, even tho the target rifles cost a small heap more. Buy once / cry once... ☆
When you turn a $250 rifle in to a $900 rifle it better shoot tighter groups 😆
How can we find out about classes on that 10/22 . Looked at the website didn’t mention the 10/22 class ?
Call up to MCC and ask for Mark Dye. He’ll get you the upcoming schedule. Let him know you saw the show!
The 10/22 class for 2022 has already been held. The next one will be in the spring of 2023.
@@alexanderwilliams9066 thanks for the info!
Thanks
Look under NRA classes, they have all kinds of options.
The only reason these people don't have long hair is because they work with rotating shafts, or it naturally occurred, or the long-haired ones don't work there anymore because they got great gigs, or there was a nuclear powerer-plant accident and it's radiation poisoning. Could still be a magic space wizard, though. I've still got the 10/22.
Hi Chris, how do I contact Alex at MCC to work on my 5 original Ruger bolts? I replaced all these bolts with Kidd bolts but like to have these fixed for back up parts. I also have some barrel work for Len, cutting crowning and chambering of 5 barrels. I live in Virginia and I am finding it hard to find people in my area to do the work.
Who knows I may have some triggers I can send them too because I have replaced the originals with Kidd.
Karen, Reach out to the Montgomery Community College Gunsmithing & NRA School Facebook page if you have Facebook or call 877-572-6222 and ask for either one of the guys. Hope this helps!
@@CarolinaALLOUT Thank you for the quick reply; I will call them tomorrow! I love your videos.
@@karencollins9363 Thanks Karen!
Sorry! Guys...But I've got both..The 10-22 Ruger and the CZ512 in a 22wm. I don't even use the 10-22 anymore 😕 The CZ is way better gun.
Chris now has some extra parts to build a second 10/22.
what part of your original gun did you get to keep?
The receiver, trigger group.
Will they do this work for anyone willing to pay for it?
Unfortunately no. But they can refer you to some of their former students that are in business now.
Why doesn't Ruger build it like that from the get go?
Probably no one would buy them as they'd be too expensive. Cheap guns sell!
Hi im from philippines sir i want to purchase a 10/22 ruger how the process sir
I'VE GOT A RUGER 10/22 WITH A M1 CARBINE STOCK VERY UNUSUAL BUT REALLY PRETTY
What kinda jacket is that and what's the camo pattern called? No way my 10/22 is gonna be fixed like that.
It's a Sitka Celsius Midi jacket.(Looks like it's out of production but can be bought from different sites on the web.) The Camo is "Optifade Elevated II" It's a great jacket. Can be worn by itself or as a heavy underlayer. Sitka is extremely proud of their products, thus the expensive price. My kids bought it for me so I wear it and I like it but typically this is way above my price range.
@@CarolinaALLOUT thanks, you only can have the barrel shaved like that in person or can a barrel be send/mailed in? I have a 20" LVT Ruger barrel. Just the groups it made after they tuned it up, also the bolt work they did. That explains why mine doesn't just slip in the receiver. Plus first time I saw a chassis & stock combo. They really fixed your 22 up.
😯😯😯😁😁😁👍👍👍 verygood
At what yardage were those groups shot at?
50 yards.
poor squirrel 🥺
Is this rebuild available for my Ruger.
They don't do rebuilds for the public but do teach 5 day classes on how to do this rebuild.
Cheek weld probably had much to do with that.
Did you mention ammo used to shoot those groups?
so correct me if I'm wrong, but everything was replaced other that the bolt and the trigger group ? and you modified them ?
it feel to me that you did not modified the riffle to be more accurate, you just gave him another one.
Ship of Theseus
Exactly!
Put some safety glasses on when your running any time of machine.
what is the cost to this
probably more than 4 brand new 10/22 from walmart.
Are you guys selling this gun?
Love this one too much to sell it! Thanks for asking though! Sign up for the classes and come on down and make one better than mine!
No one's going to be doing that at home!
That hole at the back of the receiver is the most useless piece of ingenuity ever thought of no matter where you put that hole you still have to disassemble the rifle take out the bolt take out the charging handle and the trigger group what exactly does that whole accomplish
It's so you don't have to take the barrel out... you domt have to disassemble much, just the trigger pack and the bolt
Why, after all these years, doesn't Ruger just build these 10/22 rifles better and with tighter tolerances for great performance. It's almost like they want everyone to have to replace half the parts on them just to make them shoot acceptably.
Great teachers !! Nice safety practice of no safety glasses...especially surface grinding !! FAIL !!
Or, you could just buy a CZ457 and have saved a TON of money.
The 457 is a bolt gun. The 10/22 is a semi-auto magazine fed. They are quite different from each other and their intended purposes. The 10/22 isn’t a bench gun, outside of checking accuracy and sighting it in.
Cz 512
@@mattramsey5253 unfortunately, the 512 has a crap trigger, that cannot be improved much🥲
Love it!
Where is the fun in that?
Funny. ‘Rebuilt’ his 10/22 by replacing or smithing to a completely different firearm. Not criticizing, just shows what us gun nuts will do for fun.
can i send my gun in?
No, They don't take in guns to work on. Student's typically work on their own guns so there's no shortage of guns needing attention out there. Lol.
Hope the ATF aren’t watching you guys. 😂
They are watching. 😮
They are doing nothing illegal…. Just improving things over the factory issue….
He made a “beautiful 25 yard shot” on a buck? Wow, a whole 75 feet? He should be teaching snipers in the military with shots like that. Did he take the Coriolis effect into consideration?
If you didn’t pick up on it, he was a little sheepish when he said that. He also said he was hoping to stretch it out some next time.
You don’t get to choose where the buck is going to be.
Interesting video but to me it seems like a real waste you took a gun that cost between $250 and $300 and spend another three or four hundred to get it to be accurate your rival doesn't have the same barrel the same stock and everything's been machined it's not even your gun anymore really
Take a poorly made rifle into one you could have bought better. Mine is trash.
turn the frickin music down
Get rid of all that self important intro noise…
It’s a broadcast TV show first and a RUclips show second. That’s why it looks the way it does. It’s a pain to scroll through but it’s how we are able to keep doing it. Enjoy.
Just an FYI for all watching this video. This is a one off job for this host, just for the TV show. I tried in vein to contact the show, school and even left messages for the main instructor. Not one call back and no one answers any questions. So great video awesome results but you can’t have this done. Sucks
