I took it to the range yesterday and I ran 200 rounds of 115 and 124 grain Federal FMJ. It ran flawlessly. I shot at 25, 50, then 75 yards. I hit the red and 9 circle every time. There's the Mcarbo folding latch mount for the sub2k but it's $150 just for that, which bumps the differential cost right up to the FPC. Not to mention how it's just better to get a product specifically engineered to do something upfront rather than a rubber-band type of add-on fix.

    Well done, Sootch. Another excellent production. Some years ago, the 2000s, and during my Texas law enforcement career in Houston's most gritty side, another deputy asked me, "Could you explain why I might need a rifle in a pistol caliber?" I explained, "Imagine you could deliver the power of your pistol at much greater range and with much greater accuracy. That would be ideal in a hostage situation or when you face shooters in a populated setting." This Smith & Wesson approach is appreciated and, of course, respected. Still, there are other carbines out there including the old Marlin Camp Carbines which never got a fair test in my opinion. For law enforcement and others in high level security endeavors, a carbine in the same caliber and using the same magazines as their duty pistol that is ALSO easily broken down and stowed would be, I imagine, a great answer to a common problem.
    However, I would argue that a rifle sold WITHOUT sights is not a rifle at all. Smith erred, I believe, for not including, at the very least, a set of low cost easily detachable sights made of some high density plastic. Lastly, this carbine is not designed for military conflict but rather the domestic and LEO market where pricision is a higher concern than capacity although capacity is VERY important. Thus, I criticize, although not vehemently, the design of the spare magazine release, in the shoulder stock, which will not allow for the shooter to stay on target and draw another magazine and place it in battery using only the off hand. Clearly that is a two hand operation.

    • @sootch00
      @sootch00  Год назад +20

      Thanks Lauro! I appreciate the points you made about the FPC. Sights would definitely be a huge plus and the spare mag release isn't ideal for a quick reload. The Ruger PC9 would be a good comparison though, since it's a break down carbine. Might make a good comparison. The Kel-tec Sub 2000 has to have a trigger upgrade to be a serious consideration. Take care Brother

      Great points Lauro. Unbelievable that Smith & Wesson would MSRP a firearm at $600 plus, without sights, that you can't really shoot right out of the box. I mean c'mon, this wouldn't even be expected from a low cost manufacturer never mind Smith & Wesson for crying out loud. Kel-Tec cheaped out on a few things as well but at least it's an accurate shooter right out of the box.

    I purchased one for $600 shipped about 4 weeks ago. It was considered a pre-order since they are flying off the shelf. Took 2 weeks for them to get one to ship. I got it about 8 days ago and finally got to shoot it. I set it up with Ozark Armament Flip Up Iron Sights and a Sig Sauer Romeo5 1x20mm Compact 2 Moa Red Dot. I did disassemble as Sootch showed and it was easy. Took to the range today and must say I am thoroughly impressed. 25 yards had many holes touching and at 50, less than 1 inch groups with cheap ammo. I even shot at 100 and 200 yards with good hits once I corrected for the drop. Recoil was minimal. It didn't sound like shooting a 9mm, which make sense because it was being shot thru a longer barrel. I can't describe it but it was an oddly muted sound. I have been looking for a while and was preparing to purchase a pistol caliber carbine and I am so glad I delayed. Once I saw the S&W FPC, I know that it was the one I wanted. Now waiting on 10mm and 45 ACP. No misfires with cheap 115 grain ammo

      If one was to chop the barrel and rail right after where the charging handle latches, how long would the barrel be? I'm thinking a setup like the Sub CQB, with a fixed 9mm suppressor so the overall length is the same and you could cross state lines without a Form 20.

    Great review, Sootch! I’m starting to realize something about S&W - it almost feels like they’re starting to go into all the different firearm nooks and crannies and putting their own spin on it. The 5.7, the M&P 12, this one, the list keeps going. These were already around and made by other firearm companies, but Smith must have gotten the idea to go into those holes to create a similar design so they can basically control the market from most all aspects. • @leroyatleroys
      @leroyatleroys Год назад +1

      @HappyAmerican 32 What I mean is that I would prefer a more rail to the rear for a more traditional sight length. I don't want AR style iron sights up front like that. @Red Rider7 I am aware of all of this. I literally spent years researching parts because it was a rifle that always intrigued me since the first gens. Still, I would rather not deal with the weird red dot mounts, so I am probably going to go with S&W if they offer this in 40 S&W.

      @@leroyatleroys you prefer.40?

    • @leroyatleroys
      @leroyatleroys Год назад

      @Jay F! It's more specific to this rifle. I carry 9mm with all my EDC guns. However, I really want this gun for a backpack setup when I am in wilderness. Just in case. But since there are lots of different kinds of animals, I want this rifle to be able to handle most encounters. It won't be an ideal bear gun. But it should be able to get the job done. I would rather have it in 10mm. But since these foldable rifles are not offered in 10mm, I have to work with the options available. The hottest .40 S&W load I can find is Underwood JHP that has a muzzle velocity of 1300 with a 150gr projectile. That is reaching lower 10mm velocities. So if I run it through a rifle length barrel, I can maximize its powder burn for even higher velocities while sending a fairly heavy round down range. Faster and heavier than what 9mm can do, even with +P. With extended mags, I don't even have to worry about if I will have enough rounds. It isn't ideal for hunting or anything. But it offers a good level of protection beyond what my S&W M&P 2.0 in 9mm can do. I know a lot of people hate on .40. But it isn't a bad round. And it is super cheap. I feel that every round has a place. I feel that .40 S&W with the right ammunition can really shine in this kind of setup.

    Easy to store, quick for action, light weight, cheap & commonly available ammo.
