  • The upper I bought from Brownells in .223 Wylde short strokes most of ammo, except my reloads with IMR Benchmark powder.
    At $219 shipped it's bargain. Should I keep it and try to solve the problem or return it and get something else that works?

      I had the same issue with the same upper from aim surplus. Contact Radical firearms. They will gladly take a look at your upper. I sent them mine and they quickly processed the upper and got it back to me in less than 2 weeks. My upper was undergassed, so their gunsmith enlarged the gas port a little. Now its running like a champ.

      @@anthonylinatoc5148 When I took handguard off per tech support and saw the soot around gas block I figured I probably could fix it or maybe not, didn't want to take risk and wasn't completely happy with other minor issues. After this I bought another upper for $123 shipped. It cycles, although first 10 or so shots wouldn't, until I oiled the chamber as I noticed some cases came out like they were resized, others had carbon gunk. After oiling I ran maybe 100 rounds without issue and did some accuracy testing but it wasn't as accurate, well I figured I would replace the barrel if needed, I'll do that now and get premium barrel and hope it shoots better than Radical otherwise I'll be pissed :) I am thinking White Oak Armament but the barrel will cost more than Radical upper :)

      @@anthonylinatoc5148 I contacted them (this all happened a while ago) and they did offer to send me a new gas block but it was after the fact I returned it. Still want to give them credit for trying to fix the issue. Looking back now with cooler head I should have been more patient, I ended up spending 4-5 times more on the upper I put together, mainly because I went with piston gas system.

    The barrel imprint of 223 1:7 also states that it is not a 223 Wylde, my barrel is stamped 223 Wylde 1:8. I would not recommend running 5.56 ammo through that upper

    I kinda new to ARs but mine don't have carbon soot near the gas block or tube I'm wonder if yours is not got a good 'seal' and the gas leak causing significant drop in pressure to cycle the action, quite a few small issues with that upper and it adds up to a good reason to return it however those groups are good and with some load work ups it's gonna get better, if me I would contact the same tech maybe they'll send out gas block and/or tube and go from there , keep us posted

    • @DimaProk
      @DimaProk  4 года назад +1

      Yes, I think so too. I checked my other upper and while everything is different about it, it doesn't have black soot just a little bit of grey. At this point I want to return it and put another one together like my 1st upper I built and maybe even splurge and get a true match grade barrel.

    I just received the same exact setup from primary arms and it looks used! My barrel looks as if they had issues with the gas block removed it and installed it a few times ! it looks like a blem ! I had your same issue with a 50 Beowulf I contacted them and they never replied! I’m not feeling this.

      sucks... is it accurate at least? I was just eyeballing same upper at PA too lol, but this one actually has 1 in 8" twist. When I got my White Oak Armament match barrel I scratched it up while putting on cheap ass barrel nut that came with upper, later when i was sanding gas block saddle per directions I realized I was able to take out scratches out pretty easy with same sand paper and oil, but I got lathe I can chuck the barrel.

    Can tell you right off. Your barrels gas port will be .7 in size. Should be .83. Gas block won't see enough gas to cycle the next round. 2 batches where recalled. Drill out your hole with the correct size bit and it will work fine

      @DimaProk  3 года назад

      You were right all along. I told my friend to get the whole AR from them with pandemic panic it was good price at $525 and it had same problem. I took the GB off and it was .076" I drilled it to .082" and it solved the problem. Dang it, I wish I kept my upper, I spent about 4.5x amount to put together different upper and while it shoots, this could have been at fraction of the cost if I kept it and fixed it.

    Hey👋 Been a minute sense I’ve seen a video from you:) I’ve had great luck with the gas check makers you made me👍 sounds to me like you’ve covered all your bases with that upper my guess would have been the gas block snd you’ve checked that. If you have soot showing up outside the block, that means you have a leak or blockage. On a few of my cheaper builds that the gas port didn’t align or (clock) with the gas block properly, i chamfered the edge of the barrel port and gas block port. That may void your warranty tho? If it was me, I’d try a new gas block and tube, sense you can buy them for around $25 and if that didn’t work I’d buy a Bear creak arsenal barrel and install that, there really inexpensive too(like $90 +s/h). I just built a friend one and with cheap hornady range ammo, I was getting 7/8” groups at 100yds. Its a good looking upper. If you can put up with the texture, that handguard looks pretty cool. I wish you luck! I’m pretty sure I have an extra cheapy steel gas block and rifle length gas tube, I’d be happy to send you:) Not sure if I still have your shipping address written down? But let us know how it all turns out:)

      Ps. The gas block I have, is a .750 not sure if thats the diameter of your barrel or if its a .825?

    • @DimaProk
      @DimaProk  4 года назад +1

      Hey Jeff :) glad you enjoying making your own gas checks, did you ever find best material for 458 SOCOM? So the only thing I didn't really check but I think I have idea is if the gas port and dimple are exactly at 6 and 12 o'clock but with gas tube pinned it's kind of hard to rotate with it in the way. You actually brought up a very good point about chamfering the gas port, that should be simple enough. 7/8" groups (sub-moa) barrel sounds like a ticket to me. As far as handguard, honestly the one I bought from DD I like better, the finish is very smooth, it looks like this except it's 12" davidsondefense.com/Trinity-Force-15-Professional-Grade-Keymod-Ultra-Super-Slim-Handguard_p_990.html All in all the upper without the barrel cost me $132 and the upper doesn't have forward assist that I actually like it better. It also doesn't have dust cover but it's no big deal. I am looking at Bear Creek barrels and hard to believe but they got $40 barrels on sale! The one I am looking at says MOA guarantee and it's 20" $84.86, so I can build another upper for about same price. I like longer barrels since they really improve velocity. I think I should just return my Radical Firearms since they let me. Thanks for the offer though!

      Dima Prok. I’ve had good luck with a few different thicknesses of aluminum that I was trying for experimentation and I tried a variety pack of copper sheets that I bought off of amazon, but my favorite so far has been some copper flashing my brother got me from a roofing job he did. Mostly my favorite because it was free:) That Davidson defense handguard looks good and 15 inches will get a tripod a ways out towards the end of the barrel which I prefer to make keeping it steady for the longer shots. I don’t think you’ll be disappointed with a Bear Creek barrel if thats the route you decide to go

      @@jeffhuntley2921 Figured if I build it from scratch I can check gas tube with air from compressor how you're supposed to, to see if leaks. I didn't do that with my first build (7.62x40WT) but everything turned out fine and yes for longer barrel at least 15" handguard with bipod in the front. I'll be shooting from the bench mostly. I am glad you got some copper flashing, it is super expensive everywhere I looked.

      Well I ended up returning but frankly I regretted. I was just pissed off that too many things were wrong, but looking back with cooler head I should have fixed it. 1) take off gas block, make sure it's aligned, make sure the gas block doesn't have too much clearance (fit) to the barrel, might need to get a tighter gas block. 2) might need to enlarge gas block by drilling, you need to have a vice and drill press or milling machine. I have it all, the barrel was actually match, I got sub MOA results without trying hard.

      @DimaProk  4 года назад

      Jack Morrow morrow Reading reviews it seems like a hit and miss, a friend of mine later told me he toured the factory and there was lack of QC, the GBs were installed crooked. Looking back I regret returning the upper, for the money I should have fixed it considering that barrel was indeed "match" as I got sub moa groups with cheap bulk Hornady reloads. I also found out later that even with my next barrel from White Oak Armory and quality adjustable gas block from Adams Arms I had to lap the GB portion to get really tight fit - this is by design by WOA it still would not cycle my reloads with IMR 4198 but it also didn't shoot it as well. I found it really liked Ramshot TAC which shot sub moa across 3 different charges.
      I might be a newby but I have the knowledge. I just didn't feel like I should be fixing a brand new upper at my own expense and I didn't like how one screw in the hand guard stripped and it was being held by one screw so this us why I decided to return it but looking back I should have kept it and fixed it for the price. Now I still think you shouldn't have to fix new upper.

    • @DimaProk
      @DimaProk  4 года назад

      Also, the loads I shot with IMR 4198 were max at 22gr and brass had pressure signs and still won't function.

      @DimaProk  3 года назад

      Need your help Jack, my friend just got complete AR15 from them and it's a same problem. GB looks straight but I can't take it off the set screw is really stuck in there, I stripped my wrench but I think the screw is still ok. Any suggestion besides the gas block? Should I shorten the spring? Get lighter buffer? As far as ammo goes, I did find that IMR 4198 seems to be the powder that doesn't want to cycle even at full max load with another AR I build that work fine but not with this powder. Using Benchmark and bulk powder similar to BLC(2) works just fine in my gun but not my friend's.
