Nice Vid, but to clear a few things up the main difference between .223 and 5.56 is the free bore or the jump to the rifling. The .223 has .025" freebore length, where the 5.56 has .050" freebore length. The rest of the dimensions on the case are negligible. The difference in pressures ( the .223 max pressure being 55,000 where the 5.56 being 62,000 ) is due to where the civilian market tests for case pressures vs. where the military tests for case pressure. The civilian market tests towards the back of the round where as the military test at the top of the round. If both were tested in the same spot the pressures would be close.
Ordered a stainless steel 223 Wylde barrel based on your recommendation. Thanks for the video. My logic is that since ammo can be hard to find, I can use whichever is available, or if both are available, I can buy whatever is on sale.
Finally shot mine yesterday. Shot 5.56 and .223. A few jams with the first couple of mags but once the oil got down everywhere it needs to be, no issues at all. Put about 200 rounds through it and it got better and better. This is my first AR so I really have nothing to compare it to, but I am very very happy with it.

I could have bought an 556 upper but I decided on the 223 wylde just because. I am happy with my choice and rather have the in between instead of making a mistake like I did 20 years ago. I bought a type 97 pistol used (before Bushmaster bought the company)from my local gun shop and did not know that there was a difference. I had issue after issue with that firearm and after I sold it I found out the wrong ammo was the reason for my issues.
edspad2 hmmm, I wonder if steel .223 would be ok but steel 5.56 would cause issues, I’m still looking for which upper I wanna buy, everything’s sold out everywhere😫
I only watched this video for info about twist rates. I have a BCA 223 Wylde, which I'm happy with. How do the twist rates compare, regarding projectile weight? Can 70+ grain bullets stabilize in Wylde? How's that work vs 223, and 556?
Some of the questions asked here can easily be answered by doing some research. Some of the questions make me wonder if some of the people who asked them ever fired a rifle.
I bought one of your uppers .223 Wylde ( rear charging handle ) a few years back from Classic Firearms, but now i might have to buy a side charge......
The .223 Wylde rifle has identical chamber angling as a 5.56×45 rifle but also brings a .2240 freebore diameter. It also has tighter freebore size in a .223 Wylde rifle which allows you to shoot .223 ammo with relatively strong accuracy from it than a 5.56×45 rifle. BASICALLY, it's more accurate than a rifle chambered in 5.56. I can agree with the accuracy claims, too! 😉
So if I have a 556 ar or 223 ar do I just need to change the barrel to 223 wylde or is there more I need to change on the ar when going to a 223 wylde barrel?
I'm not a reloader so I'm only going on what I've read. You say a 223 in a 556 chamber will have lateral slop. I am under the impression that external dimensions are the same in both roundswith the exception of 556 bullet protrudes slightly further out of the case of the 556. Thus rifling on the 556 starts slightly further than the 223. When putting a 556 in a 223 chamber/barrel where the rifling starts at a shorter distance, the 556 engages the rifling on chambering, thus not allowing bullet momentum before before engaging the rifling and compounding the pressure increase. Is this not correct?
A minute, or just about, but it's consistentcy between caliber's and rounds was the difference maker, It is much harder to tell the difference between 5.56 and .223, also the rifle length gas system on my upper seemed to be a good addition to the setup, 2.5 at 300, once it's dialed in. I recommend it, fits well with aero lowers and spike tactical, but I did have some fitment issues with polymer lowers.
Tune it for the lower pressure ammo (.223) so it runs more reliably with both. Just keep in mind with that tuning running more 5.56 will put more stress in your components.
I have a 5.56 AR that has trouble shooting .223 steel case.. it keeps jamming. Unfortunately I bought a lot of .223 steel during the worst of the pandemic because it was the only thing available. I have a .223 wylde BRN180s, would that do better or worse with .223 steel cased? Lol.. I haven't tried it yet.
Send an email to bcatech@bearcreekarsenal.com with information such as the type of trigger you use, gas system length, and types of jams you're experiencing and they will help you
@@Bear_Creek_Arsenal The casing gets stuck after its fired. The AR runs great with brass.. The guy at the range told me it has something to do with the steel expanding in the chamber.. It gets stuck really bad, have to hit it hard with a cleaning rod to get it out. Some one else told me the barrel might be out of spec but never had any issue with brass. Was just wondering if .223 wylde would handle it better since my other AR is a 5.56 upper.
New to the a15 world here just a question Besides the .223 wylde barrel yall sale does anything else has to be change on the rifle to still be able to shoot 5.56? Thanks
It seems that every weapon in your introduction is throwing the spent cases forward towards the operator's two o'clock position. This type of ejection is indicative of an over gassed gun that is putting extreme pressure on the bolt carrier group.
Hey Ron, I appreciate your concern, however, after examining the clips you mentioned I believe they are ejecting normally. The camera position is just making it appear abnormal (the camera man is not standing straight across from the shooter but rather in front of him or behind him depending on the clip)
You realize over gassing is an issue for piston driven systems and suppressors. BCA uses direct impingement on their uppers. He literally stated he only had .223 in house because of the ammo shortage, which is anemic compared to 5.56.
Bca makes a great product only thing they need to do is ditch the birdcage and use the Jerry Miculeks muzzle break i got one on my barrel flat shooting never lose your target picture . i will say its louder than hell but ill take the noise and embrace it results are amazing. Flatter more accurate shots hands down. Perfection at its best.
@bearcreekarsenal I just bought your 556 10.5 complete rifle for my gf's first AR but only because the 223 wyld was not available. When will those uppers be back in stock so I can upgrade her .
Ok BCA, legitimate question here...why are nearly all of the 5.56 and .223 twist rates manufactured by BCA 1:8 in the 16-18 inch barrels? what about making some that are 1:7? I would like to hear your position on selecting the 1:8 twist and mass producing it over the 1:7 twist.
Hey Russ, I don't know the exact reason, but I assume that it is because most 5.56 and .223 rounds are 55 grain which perform best with a 1:8 twist rate
Hey John, that can vary based on the barrel length and type of gas system. The gas port size can be found on the product page when clicking on the More Information button

Has anyone bought this .223 wylde 16 inch upper? Is it accurate? I’m debating buying a complete .223 wylde from them or just building one myself and spending a bit more money
I purchased one the week before thanksgiving. Shot it yesterday. This is my first AR so I have nothing to compare it to, but it shoots great. Shot both .223 and 5.56. If you’re on the fence, just go ahead and get it while you can.
🤦🏼♂️ 5.56 and .223 are identical case dimensions. Both headspace on the shoulder. 5.56 has a longer throat and allows for longer bullets. And yes, 5.56 can be loaded to higher than SAAMI pressures than .223 book specs. Wylde chambers share the same case dimensions as .223/5.56. The gas tube pressure comment is just ignorant. I expect a manufacturer to represent their products with people with real knowledge. This fellow is full of facts, they’re just mostly wrong.
The case neck is the difference, the 5.56 mm NATO neck is slightly longer which can increase the pressure when fired in a .223 chamber which has the shorter neck length. It's Not Rocket Scientry.
If you have an interest in US Service Rifle Competition then a .223 Match or Wylde Chamber notion wiil promote accuracy from .223 or 5.56 Match Grade Ammunition. For ALL others the 5.56 NATO Chambered rack grade M16A4 or M4 will deliver sub MOA from Mk262 if the shooter has had some marksmanship training. The USAMU has proven this.
So many experts making comments! Aren't you all afraid to develop trigger finger syndrome hitting all them keys on those cheap keyboards? Bear Creek makes fine shooting implements, and they all work fine. You want a Mercedes at a cost of a Chevy? There is plenty overpriced snob outfits.
Well, I won't dispute that my BCA items have done the job asked of them, but let's not pretend they are selling their Chevys at Chevy prices anymore...they think they are worth Mercedes money because of a toilet paper hoarding epidemic.
I edited my very lengthy and overly antagonistic response... The following item is overpriced. You don't agree. We can leave it at that. www.bearcreekarsenal.com/223-wylde-24-black-nitride-straight-fluted-heavy-barrel-1-8-twist-rifle-length-gas-system-15-mlok-split-rail-side-charging-upper
@@CredibleHulk10 , I saw your earlier reply. No hard feelings either way. I think I understand your point, but the rules of free market dictate that an object is worth as much as the buyer is willing to pay for it. Also, I don't think it's fair to dismiss the effect of the "pandemic" out of hand - the suppliers are under pressure, the supplies are short, the need to protect workers is real, ..etc. I asked for an example of an overpriced item so I could better understand you. I find BCA prices rather competitive. I tried pricing the parts of a comparable build - the cost came up very close to BCA price. But if you feel it is overpriced - it is overpriced. PSA prices are simular.
I found the .223 Wylde ammo in the same aisle as the muffler bearings.

Have had a 16” BCA 223 wylde for years now. Have many thousands of rounds through it and no problems. Great product.

Bill Wylde is from Greenup, IL. It's the next town over from me he's a pretty smart guy.

@@dereklight6568 sorry to hear, he left a solid legacy with his design engineering 👍👍
I like the side charging upper. I haven't fired mine yet due to fire danger here in Commiefornia but I'm looking forward getting to break it in.
Thanks for the rundown.
You didn't mention shooting Steel Case in 223 Wyled.
I’d also like to know about that, for when I buy cheap plinking rounds
@@kollin611 Reportedly-- Because of the tighter tolerance of 223 Wyled Chambering, Steel case doesn't feed well.
Edspad2 BS! My 13.7 223 wylde rosco O shoot steel all the tims without any issues
@@jameshill5304 Reportedly. That is exactly why i was hoping for comment from BCA
edspad2 hmmm, I wonder if steel .223 would be ok but steel 5.56 would cause issues, I’m still looking for which upper I wanna buy, everything’s sold out everywhere😫
Thanks for the straight talk
I only watched this video for info about twist rates. I have a BCA 223 Wylde, which I'm happy with.
How do the twist rates compare, regarding projectile weight?
Can 70+ grain bullets stabilize in Wylde? How's that work vs 223, and 556?
Some of the questions asked here can easily be answered by doing some research. Some of the questions make me wonder if some of the people who asked them ever fired a rifle.
all my ARs have 223wylde 1:8 barrels
I bought one of your uppers .223 Wylde ( rear charging handle ) a few years back from Classic Firearms, but now i might have to buy a side charge......
Thanks for selling good entry level stuff 👍
I’m gonna buy one soon but I want to know if the 556 nato is better under pressure and longevity after abuse
So is this legal in California?
Can you load 5.56 and 223 in the same magazine when shooting the 223 wylde
You can 👍
Yes
Are you able to put a BCA upper on any kind of lower? Let's say a Ruger 556.
Yep, any mil-spec lower will work 👍
@@Bear_Creek_Arsenal perfect!
.556 takes both and most companies don’t make just .223 anymore
The .223 Wylde rifle has identical chamber angling as a 5.56×45 rifle but also brings a .2240 freebore diameter. It also has tighter freebore size in a .223 Wylde rifle which allows you to shoot .223 ammo with relatively strong accuracy from it than a 5.56×45 rifle.
BASICALLY, it's more accurate than a rifle chambered in 5.56. I can agree with the accuracy claims, too! 😉
**it's accurate with both 5.56 and .223**
They keep the .223 Wylde ammo right next to the 5.56 gas tubes last I checked.
So if I have a 556 ar or 223 ar do I just need to change the barrel to 223 wylde or is there more I need to change on the ar when going to a 223 wylde barrel?
Just the barrel 👍
Wait they are shooting with no sights?!
Still never heard of a 223 556 mix up causing any problem besides miss feeds failure to chamber and over gassing
Thanks for your comment. We have a blog on our website that goes into more detail about this topic
This guy was full of misinformation in this video.
Love my heavy barrel 16.5 .223 wild upper from B.C.A I was stunned at the groupings at 100y vs higher priced uppers I have access to.
What kind of groupings did you get?
A minute, or just about, but it's consistentcy between caliber's and rounds was the difference maker, It is much harder to tell the difference between 5.56 and .223, also the rifle length gas system on my upper seemed to be a good addition to the setup, 2.5 at 300, once it's dialed in. I recommend it, fits well with aero lowers and spike tactical, but I did have some fitment issues with polymer lowers.
Do they have a issue cycling steel cased ammo ?
I shot a 500 rounds of wolf through my 16" .223 wylde last weekend. not one failure. I had it nice and lubed with gun grease though.
First time building, what ammo should i tune my aero precision gas block with if i wanted to run both rounds?
Tune it for the lower pressure ammo (.223) so it runs more reliably with both. Just keep in mind with that tuning running more 5.56 will put more stress in your components.
Sounds like a solution in search of a problem
Is the BCG the same as the 223/556? i'm guessing it is?
Hey Chris, the BCG is the same for both
@@Bear_Creek_Arsenal i figured so. never hurts to ask.
Can a drum mag fit it
Would be dope if you did some 14.5 pin welded
Awesome good info!
New to the a15 world here just a question
Besides the .223 wylde barrel yall sale does anything else has to be change on the rifle to still be able to shoot 5.56?
Thanks
So accurate you don’t even need sights!!
I have my Armalite M15 3 gun with wylde barrel in stainless. Fantastic rifle i shoot 223 ammo trough it.
How does this work with steel cased ammo?
Yes sir, all our uppers work with steel case, we just recommend brass because it's cleaner and more accurate

Can you shoot 300 blackout through 223 wylde?
Hey Josh, .223 wylde shoots 5.56 and .223. You'll need a dedicated 300 Blackout barrel to shoot 300 Blackout
Are you able to switch out the 223 Wylde Barrel for a 300 Blackout Barrel? I know you can normally do that with the 5.56.
Yes, 300 Blackout uses the same bolt, magazines, etc. as 5.56 and .223 Wylde. You just need to change the barrel

Hey Tommy, we have a 16" side charger in stock right now (search 915-)
Ok BCA, legitimate question here...why are nearly all of the 5.56 and .223 twist rates manufactured by BCA 1:8 in the 16-18 inch barrels? what about making some that are 1:7? I would like to hear your position on selecting the 1:8 twist and mass producing it over the 1:7 twist.
Hey Russ, I don't know the exact reason, but I assume that it is because most 5.56 and .223 rounds are 55 grain which perform best with a 1:8 twist rate
@@Bear_Creek_Arsenal so would you say the heavier 223 and 5.56 ammo will perform best in a 223 wylde platform with a 1:7 twist?
@@maxpain6822 1:8 performs great up to about 77 grain bullets. Anything higher than that and I would go with a 1:7

I've been seeing shooting 223 and everything AR platform I have that I've gotten from you people plus I have another one from another brand and it works just fine I don't know why people make the big deal of it I've not lost any accuracy because of it and people just blow something out because they got to have something to talk about I guess like a bunch of old hens...
Has anyone bought this .223 wylde 16 inch upper? Is it accurate? I’m debating buying a complete .223 wylde from them or just building one myself and spending a bit more money
I purchased one last year. It has thus far been flawless.
I purchased one the week before thanksgiving. Shot it yesterday. This is my first AR so I have nothing to compare it to, but it shoots great. Shot both .223 and 5.56. If you’re on the fence, just go ahead and get it while you can.
Always build your own. Its super easy my 13 year old can do it and you will get a better product in the end and for way cheaper.
The 223/556 debate is horse shit, many many many instructors, that have watched millions of rounds down range have dispelled that stupid theory...
I don't believe the 5.56 has more powder. I think the .223 has slightly greater case capacity. 5.56 has thicker case walls, ergo the greater pressure.
No. Another guy commented this better than I can articulate it but the military and civilian markets test pressures in different places
Both cases weigh the exact same. more internet bullshit.
I was pretty sure that the difference was the leade as well.
I thought you could shoot 556 through a 223 wild camber
You can, check out our blog for more information
